The Black Horse Restaurant in South Kesteven

It was my first time dining here, and certainly not my last! The black horse is a gorgeous old country pub with period features and has the most beautiful restaurant. The staff are delightful.... welcoming and friendly and there is a good menu choice. My burger was absolutely delicious and my friend also enjoyed her salmon. The desserts were a real treat too.... the pistachio and salted caramel cheesecake was to die for. Portion sizes were generous and i felt like it was really great value, given the exceptional quality of food and fabulous service we received. A great evening and I would confidently recommend a visit if you get the opportunity.

I rang and a gentleman answered and I asked to book a table for 2 on Monday 9th September. He said that was ok, took some details and confirmed the table was booked. I arrived at the Black Horse only to find the whole place locked and no one answering the phone. If they are closed on Mondays how was the person I spoke to able to confirm my booking??

My daughter got married there yesterday and it was amazing. From the moment we made our first enquiry, we received top quality service. The wedding package included everything we could possibly want and Sophie and Gail looked after us very well. I would definitely recommend as a wedding venue.

Had lunch today and just feel disappointed with the food. Arranged a special lunch to meet up with my grandson . The service was very good and we were asked on many occasions if everything was okay. But owing to having my grandson i would not like to cause a scene . I should think the roast potatoes had been cooked days before the cabbage was hard and the broccoli was burnt. Yorkshire pudding like rock .Stuffing hard meat salty and meal cold . Chicken tikka Masala was very dry . Pie was very good but had better chips at Mac d . When we walked in i was surprised to see only two tables taken . Now i understand why . And as already been commented on Beer very expensive .It is a shame that this meal has taken the edge off of what should have been a memorable occasion . Although Lovely Staff and Service .

Great value delicious Sunday carvery. 3 meats to choose from, or you can have all three! Very tasty nut toast, with a good choice of vegetables. Options for 1 to 3 courses. Great value for money. Lovely welcoming team, with very attentive waitressing. Yummy deserts we had the apple and cinnamon crumble with custard and cheesecake with ice cream. Thanks to all the team, we will definitely be back.

Perfect for family lunch with carvery. Service excellent and all food well prepared. Nice puddings. Only small issue was no nut roast for vegetarians, only vegi sausages.

We have previously eaten at the Black Horse,and the food has been good,so we decided to try the Sunday carvery for the first time,to say that we were disappointed is a understatement. We had the beef and turkey as our chosen meats the beef was unedible,just a lump of fat,you could neither cut it,or pull it apart,the parsnips,and cauliflower were both undercooked,not Al dente,undercooked,you couldn't put a fork in them,the service we felt was average,we won't be visiting again.

Good meal , friendly helpful service but had to leave early as we were all freezing. After putting our coats round our knees for a while we felt so uncomfortable we left . Does this place have no heating?

We checked the website first and Sunday lunch menu (which admittedly says it’s a sample and may change) it mentions nut roast, when I called to book the day before I did ask if there was a nut roast and was told yes. The vegetarian option today though was two veggie sausages which was a bit of a disappointment. The food was quite nice though, reasonably choice of tasty veg and we did enjoy the meal. It would have been better if they could think of an option better than a couple of veggie sausages though. I’m not so sure £15 is reasonable for the veggie option today. Staff were polite, it wasn’t busy but still didn’t get asked if the food was ok soon after we started eating (to me that’s bone basic customer service). I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but the place didn’t really have much atmosphere, it was OK but I’m not sure we’ll go back.

Very poor I'm afraid. Food was poor to below average. Beer was expensive . There was a very noisy party going on in the back room with small children were running around the bar area so not conducive to a great evening chatting with friends. Staff were friendly though. Don't think I'll be going back.

Had a really lovely meal tonight! I rarely go out for meals but my young boys were thirsty so we stopped for a beverage and a play in the lovely play area outside. Then I decided to wait until 5.30 for food. All the staff were so friendly and showed us to our table, everything was really clean, and the decor was beautiful. We chose the £10 Monday offer, and really enjoyed it, tasted fresh and really hot just how I like my food! Will definitely be back!

The four of us had a very nice 2 course meal. Asked for something off menu and they willingly obliged. Couldn’t manage a dessert due to the generous portions. Great atmosphere, bar and serving staff were brilliant. Great night out

Really disappointed by this place. It was OK but they have some nobheads sat at the bar which spoil the whole environment. Little gobby fat guy.

Lovely room, nothing was too much trouble and dinner was absolutely amazing! Perfectly cooked steak -both of us loved the whole meal!

A group went for the seniors menu. The food was delicious and served hot. It was plated out, so no messing around waiting for vegetables and sides to arrive. Very good value for money.

I organised a party at the Black Horse and would definitely recommend this venue. Gail was so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We also stayed overnight and rooms are lovely and breakfast was delicious.

Excellent carvery sunday lunch for the family. Nice choice of meats and excellent vegetables. Puddings excellent. Fully recommend and will return. Only issue was the service. Had to keep asking for our drinks order to be taken, plates to be cleared and deserts to be ordered and then delivered. Perhaps just an off day for the waitress.

Went for lunch on and found that they did a pensioner meal just on a Tuesday & Wednesday, got to be worth a go. We both went for the roast dinner and really pleased that we did, 1 roast beef and 1 roast turkey with stuffing, good size portions that came with Yorkshire pud and seasonal veg, we both thought that there was plenty on the plate but then came a side dish of more veg and a gravy boat. The pensioner deal is 2 course for 1 price so we followed the main with a white chocolate cheesecake and a brownie and ice cream. Everything was well cooked and presented and the waitress was extremely cheerful and efficient. Will be back soon

4 of us popped in for a meal without booking on a Tuesday evening. The greeting from the young lady behind the bar was excellent. The real ale was lovely and the choice of gin and tonic recommendations were great. We were shown to our table and the food was served in very timely manner. The food was lovely and the service throughout was faultless.

The venue looks lovely since the refurb and they replied promptly over email when looking for somewhere to book a christening buffet. We booked the small room at the front as they were serving Sunday dinners in the other room at the back. Considering we were spending £500 I felt we were an inconvenience. When we turned up to set up nobody popped in to say hi are check we were ok (though they did walk through to leave napkins but didn’t say a word). We then arrived after the christening and the urn was set up for teas and coffees but there was no milk. We had to chase them up twice as guests were stood round waiting. The food was booked to come out at 1:30 so at ten to two my husband then had to go and ask where the food was. Next: I realise this was probably my mistake when booking a ‘selection of sandwiches’ I wrongly presumed there would be a cheese or egg for any vegetarian but this was not the case all meat. A family members went to ask but they did not offer to make any, instead they had to buy them at the bar. The buffet was meant to come with breadsticks, these never arrived and the chicken was meant to come with a sweet chilli dip. When a family members went and asked about this a box of tomato ketchup sachets was left on the table, making it feel more like Morrison’s cafe than a restaurant. Overall felt we left disappointment and a bit embarrassed (as family were saying how rubbish it was) we had chosen this venue.

We last visited the Black Horse about a year ago and the food was good however we had a terrible meal there this evening and we have come away feeling very disappointed. Four adults and two children two years old and a bill for £125.00. We had four starters two were OK and two were very poor, the children shared a child's pizza which was over cooked and very dry. I had fish and chips and the fish was over cooked and some of the chips were not cooked. My wife had lasagne was overcooked and very dry and my sons sea bass was bland. The staff were friendly but this did not make up for the terrible food.

This pub has been massively improved with the new identity, however the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” springs to mind...The carvery is OK, a choice of 3 meats and a vast array of vegetables on offer, although due to the popularity, some of the dishes were cold or missing, so work out your timings. The waitress staff could do with some training, if you take an order of drinks, it’s usual to bring them to the table. Especially if you’ve already put them on the bill!The food quality and choice makes it worth a visit though.

Wow! Stunning refurb job! Stayed for one night and was extremely impressed. Beautiful setting, perfect country pub with gorgeous rooms. Amazing food and a very warm welcome (and excellent service) from all staff. Will definitely be back ❤️

Sunday carvery for large birthday gathering of 13. Everyone was happy with the food, the service is spot on. The Black Horse has ‘recently’ gone through a refurbishment and it does look good! Nice play areas in the gardens for the kids too.

Great addition to the local area. Food was fantastic and service great. Food reasonably priced. And great quantities, 2 of us had steak that was cooked perfectly.

The Black Horse has been excellently refurbished. Very comfortable. We had a family get together, the carvery Was very good. The meats were well cooked, a good range of vegetables. All was really hot. We had starters, mains and sweets all equally as good. Excellent food, excellent service.

We had our wedding at the Black Horse on 24th August 2019. Kerry and her team were amazing. From the day we booked our wedding at the Black Horse to the day we left after our wedding nothing was to much for them to do for us. All the little extra touches really made our day special. The food was outstanding as commented by many of our guests. The venue was set up beautifully using our chosen colour scheme and everything was provided by the Black Horse from the table decorations, chair sashes to the private garden - all included in the price. This was great value for money. All staff on the day were professional, courteous and friendly - they couldn't have done more for us. We stayed in their accommodation overnight and this also couldn't have been faulted. Their personalised touches of congratulation cards and a personalises cushion of our wedding name and date really made us feel very special and that our day also meant a lot to them. Breakfast in the morning didn't disappoint either. We had a truly magical wedding day all thanks to the great team at the Black Horse.

Recently had our daughters wedding at Black Horse Baston Nr Peterborough. Excellent venue, excellent food, excellent service. Would highly recommended this pub/hotel.

Our first visit and it certainly wont be our last....six of us went as a party and we ALL said how good it was. The prawn and salmon starters were enourmous...and so were the mains....one of us had the mixed griil and Ive never seen a plate like it.

Went here with some friends for dinner, first visit since it re-opened so was excited to try it. New decor and layout was really lovely and I was very impressed with the first impression. As it was steak night we all went for steaks of varying types. Service was slow, food took about 45 minutes to come out, luckily we were all adults but I definitely won’t be visiting with the kids if food always takes so long to come out. Couple of things were wrong with the order and 2 of our plates had to go back, wrong sauces bought out with the food and was a pretty long wait for the correct ones to arrive by which time I had eaten half my meal, quite slow to check in for drinks refills etc.....they weren’t busy either so it wasn’t for that reason. Food was nice though and great value I thought, sauces were knocked off the bill so that was a nice touch. I feel like this place could potentially be really good, just needs a bit of polishing. I think I will give it another chance before writing it off completely.

Stopped by for a quick pint and bite to eat for lunch. Sandwiches were great but the promised door step bread was replaced with ordinary sliced. As it wasn't a big issue it is merely pedantic to mention it but for some this could be a big issue. Sales 'probably' the best beer in the land, London Fullers Pride, so alls forgiven.

Just had my daughters wedding yesterday at The Black Horse , what a fabulous venue and the team were amazing couldn’t be happier 👍 would highly recommend for any event😀

We went for lunch and there was only one other table occupied the menu was very mundane, The waiter friendly and helpful. May try again but not until the newish owners get more custom

Booked in at 5.30 on a Saturday only ones in restaurant but were seated right next to the kitchen so could hear every word and doors banging the whole time . Partners chips served with steak were just cooked but no colour wouldn’t guess they were chips. Extra veg portion was exactly the same as the few broccoli and beans already in plate . Cheese and biscuits for dessert were a joke . 4 cream crackers and 2 pieces of cheese and 4 slices of apple no chutney no butter . It was like Ethering eating dry biscuit challenge .

The bar and small dining room in this pub look really nice, however as it was Sunday we were in the large restaurant at the back of the pub. This room lacked atmosphere and although the staff were friendly and helpful it felt rather soulless. The cavery was well priced and although people in our party said the meat was very nice the vegetables were over cooked and potatoes odd tasting! The vegetarian option (red pepper and mushroom tart) was frankly bizarre and not in a good way! The deserts though were lovely and made me think it would be worth going back to sample their normal menu .... I would not hurry back for the carvery though!

Took my wife here to have a Valentines Day meal. Big mistake. This place did not capture my heart. The atmosphere was very unromantic and the food was mediocre at best.

We were in the area on holiday and booked a table here for a Saturday night. The restaurant was busy but we were seated quickly. We ordered hummus and tomatoes and brie with cranberry sauce to start. Both were really tasty and a hit. Next hubby had rib eye steak with huge chips and I had the Cajun haloumi burger again very tasty and huge portions. We had a pint and a coke and a side order of veg and a sauce for the steak. Total bill was £50. The setting was lovely and the staff attentive and helpful.

Unfortunately not the best meal... limited staff ... table looked dirty.. a lot of confusion seemed disorganised..the meal itself was mediocre the meat okay but the vegetables were cold and very difficult to serve from the bowls on server.. Yorkshire’s were flat and rubbery... will not recommend and will not be returning

Love the new decor and the quirky saddle seats! The two of us had a great evening meal during the week and looking forward to trying their Sunday Lunch. Very friendly, chatty staff
