In the posh Goodwood/Midhurst haven of West Sussex finding a traditional pub that does not bow to the snobby food needs of most of the locals & visitors is a challenge. Down a narrow lane with little room to park vulgar Tonka Toy 4x4's lies the cosy Black Horse Inn, a hostelry that actually dares to serve no-nonsense food, modest snacks & guess what? - even traditional Ploughman's!!! The log fire & the hosts welcome jointly exuded real warmth & as for the aforementioned food, it was beautifully cooked, proper tasty & beautifully presented - worthy of a Michell Star - well maybe not as that would attract the wrong sort. We lingered long at our mid-week glimpse of Ye Olde England & as such we will return.

I actually always stop at this somewhat hidden inn when there is a break on the Dorking - Petworth - Arundel antiques route. The green garden terrace is the perfect spot, especially in summer, to relax with cool drinks or a delicious lunch ('King prawn and scallop tagliatelle' & 'Lemon posset'!) and the crew is really friendly anyway. I haven't stayed there yet, but I hear only the best from other travelers. There are also plenty of parking spaces next to the building! Cheers! ↗️

My husband and I met up with another couple for lunch here last week and really enjoyed it. Excellent food - the special of hake and the vegetarian curry were particularly memorable mains. Ice cream range and quality first rate. If I was to be super picky, two of us had the Spotted Dick and surprisingly found it rather dry. But that didn't distract from our enjoyment of a very decent lunch. Service spot on and pretty decent value for this part of the world. Pleasant ambience and great views. Recommended.

Lots of positives but unfortunately our Sunday roast was not one of them. No excuse for both of our gravies being watery and tasteless. Gravy is the best part, it livens things up and is so easy to make. Cauliflower and broccoli was hard, the beef was tasteless and certainly not worth paying extra for. We saw no food coming out of the kitchen for the 35mins we waited and our food (excluding vegetables) wasn’t very warm. There were positives though. Roast potatoes were nice and so was the pork. The pub was charming, friendly and the scenery beautiful. The tables were well presented and the candles added a bit of afternoon romance. Staff were friendly and radiators were on. Small car park but parking available on the street.

Simply outstanding pub because it retains its history/ charm ( inglenook fireplaces, old beams etc) whilst accomodating any foody who loves fresh cooked cuisine. Our Sunday roast ( pork&beef) was just beautifully presented with clearly top notch produce - meats, selection of veggies, roast potatoes. All were perfectly cooked, and served by young friendly staff. It is just a shame I have waited over 30 years to return to a pub which was an old favourite when I lived and worked in the area. The food is in this pub is cut above many others at a reasonable price. A good choice and their pies are to die for with plenty of fresh seasonal vegetables. Beer was well kept. There is also a lovely garden for when summer eventually returns. Parking for this pub is a bit of a challenge and it is not really suitable for classic cars. That said there is plenty of room in the country lane. The main bar is at the front. Unfortunately the steps present a challenge for anyone with a disability and it would be good if they could fix this with a ramp. Otherwise a nice experience for a country pub.

The menu was relatively short but cover all the bases in terms of dietary requirements and was competitively priced. Our orders were served together and the food was well presented and piping hot. Tiny village and down a slightly hair raising road, this pub is hidden away in a gorgeous village near Petworth. We’ll be coming back on a warm summers day to enjoy the beautiful views from the garden ( somewhat wet and windy yesterday 🙄) The welcome was warm and friendly, the food fabulous and despite the awful weather ( storm Noa on 12/04) and the pub being very empty, we had a marvellous time, wonderful food and a gorgeous warming log fire. If you happen to be in the area I would highly recommend you give this pub a visit. Sunday lunch 26th February 2023 and the only true vegetarian option was a Sweet Potato Aloo, Dhal, Pilau Rice and Naan Bread. For those in the know - chefs for example - that's 3 types of carbohydrate and, given the meagre amount of dhal served, not a lot of protein. This is Sunday lunch! The main meal of the day and where is the protein. £12.50 for a (small) supermarket naan bread (dry), around a serving spoon of rice and 3 (at the very most) serving spoons of daal is a diabolical rip-off. Our waiter kindly reminded me that there was also and Goats Cheese and Boiled Potato option. Hmmm, not strictly vegetarian and - to my mind - a combination of two items that would be best never seen together. Still hungry after the insubstantial dhal, I ordered the fruit crumble only to be told some minutes later that they had run out of crumble. Given that our table sat down at 12:15, I wonder how much crumple was made for the day. Looking around the other dinners it seemed they we all still on their mains. Perhaps they telephoned ahead to bag the crumble. Utterly, utterly underwhelming food and service.

Beautiful country pub, lovely garden with views, brilliant service from one young member of staff in particular. All 6 of us had delicious food.

Popped in here for a drink on our way to pulborough and was a delightful spot to find, the building a whole looks amazing and the interior was well matched to its look . The garden to the rear again was amazing on the sunny day we stopped in . Staff were friendly and we intend to go bk for a meal soon

The venue is stunning, the beers on offer for ale drinkers in our party is fabulous, the food was ok. The young man serving our table was fantastic, the lady behind the bar was rude and snooty. The location, venue and waiter saved our experience today. We’ve been here so many times as a family for a day out finale but today was the first time we felt unwelcome. Hopefully better next time.

We love the cafe at the Pallant - friendly, professional staff, nice atmosphere and delicious food. Booked a lunch there to treat my wife during a stroll around Chichester for the day.

I think the staff are brilliant but this is not a genuine Spanish restaurant. No Paella? Chiporenes Sardinas ? Etc . No one had any Spanish language. Sorry guys nice try. But won’t be back .

Decor/decorum was nice. Staff were nice enough.. Came in early evening with a couple of tables already inside. Food was okay but no wow factor to it. Didn’t think prices of items reflected what we got. They forgot an item that we ordered but gave us another item that we didn’t instead, so perhaps a mix up there. No check back to see how our meal was/for us to get another drink. Chorizo, calamari, mushrooms, a side salad with a med wine and bottle of beer with service charge came just shy of £60.. which I’m in two minds about, If it was worth it based on the overall visit. Overall experience was okay but wouldn’t go back in a hurry based on experience but perhaps a one off.

Fantastic burgers and loaded fries. Enjoy with a drink round the corner at the Crafty Bishop
