Purchases Bar and Restaurant in Chichester

Haven’t been back here since covid and it was surprisingly good. Set lunch is very good value as well. We had soup and salmon for starters, and chicken and trout for main courses. All were very tasty. Staff were attentive and more than helpful. Great to see local business doing well. Keep it up!

The dining room is full of AI art of animals. In a place like Chichester with so many local artists, why would they put up that trash? Especially somewhere that the bill is north of £70 per head... The gents' was unclean and there was paper all over the floor. However the food was delicious and the staff were lovely.

Can't comment on the hotel but the restaurant is phenomenal. Ordered two espresso martinis which were divine. Then ordered a beef wellington and the fillet of steak. Both beautifully cooked and delicious. So rich and good portion sizes. The food really is impeccable. I want to return already. The service was also really good. My only negatives were service was pretty slow. 1h and 45mins for a main and cocktail. And the waiter also brought out the wrong wine. I asked for the Italian red and he seemed confused and brought out the house. Please bring over the wine list in future and I can point it out.

Came for a family lunch today and had a delicious meal. The staff very smart and nothing is too much trouble. A great place to catch up with friends and family.

As always, Purchases didn’t disappoint. Great atmosphere, fantastic service and delicious food. Highly recommend.

Beautiful place and great service. Food was delicious

We came here for Sunday lunch to celebrate our 63rd Wedding anniversary with family and friends. We had tables in the garden area as I have very low immunity and this was safer for me. The roast options were very popular for six out of the eight and the other two were very happy with the sea bream. Everyone said how delicious the food was and how one or two diet quirks were sorted so easily. As for the desserts, the Vanilla Pannacotta with rhubarb was just wonderful and the Sticky Toffee Pudding was really enjoyed. All in all, a very enjoyable meal at a reasonable price which was a lovely way to celebrate with family and friends.

Excellent food with lovely atmosphere. Staff were welcoming, friendly and professional, especially Theo, and nothing was too much trouble as they were so accommodating of dietary requirements.

Pre theatre dinner - we enjoyed the food but not the experience. Having booked online, we were seated in an awful outside room which was overheated, stuffy and draughty (quite an achievement). The food was very good and we would probably go again in the summer months but definitely not in the winter, in case were seated outside again or (possibly worse) at the inside tables by the back door, which is in constant use!

Purchases in Chichester is a hidden gem! The decor is fantastic, the atmosphere perfectly blends romantic and informal, and the food is simply superb. Highly recommend!

In North Street Chichester this previous wine shop after many changes in ownerships and formats is now again a reasonably good restaurant. Well and warmly received and very accommodating with requests. The starter of Jerusalem artichoke in a velouté was a bit thick with flour not well integrated. The white truffle in the voluté was subtle and not overpowering. Trying to match it with a wine from the list was a challenge; in the end decided to have assyertiko white from Greece - it did not stand up to the velouté. Mains of Ballentine of turkey was another challenge for a complementing wine. The wine list was wide but very expensive. The staff was courteous and charming.

Superb, nothing less. We enjoyed an overnight stay, our room was beautiful and so quiet. The resturant food is outstanding and the service is 1st class. Thank you to all the staff for such an enjoyable stay.

Restaurant review I didn’t use the hotel so can only review the restaurant- but oh my goodness what a restaurant it is! I am lucky enough to eat in a lot of different places related to my work, and I must say a restaurant of this quality, in terms of both food and the service is unrivalled in my experience. The staff warm and friendly as well as knowledgeable and the food is off the chart. Highly recommend this restaurant, you will not be disappointed

Booked for an early dinner at 5.00pm. The food and wine was excellent. The staff very attentive. We were asked if we would like to have any desert and or coffees. We refrained from having a desert but decided to enjoy a further bottle of wine. We were then approached by a more senior staff member and told that we only had a 2 hr window for our meal and that the table was now required for other customers. Had we accepted a desert, we would no doubt have been at the table a lot longer without question. Within a few seconds our bill arrived. We were incensed to say the least We challenged the member of staff who was quite abrupt, verging on rude. We asked for the service charge to be removed, paid the bill and left disgusted in the way that we had been treated. Would we go back again – not for a while.

Thank you for making our day special so special , the staff were excellent as well as the food being absolutely delicious. They went out of their way to do everything we asked. It made our wedding day complete.

Rooms were nice. Unfortunately when they converted the top floor, they left out any sound insulation whatsoever between our room and next door room. You could hear people talking next door - through two pieces of plasterboard no doubt. Was up most of the night because person next door kept getting up and then flopping into bed which banged the wall. Little sleep. Breakfast very average for what we paid. Nice bar.

Whilst visiting Chichester we came across this restaurant which looked quite interesting from the outside Welcome was friendly and we were seated immediately Quite a cozy interior with a variety of seating arrangements and the right volume of light, which is quite rare these days From the extensive menu we selected the tuna loin, a carrot ginger soup and medaillons of venison All food served was exquisite, very well presented and served at the right temperature Overall we were quite surprised to have such a great culinary experience in Chichester (sorry :)) with this lunch being the best meal we had in four days Surrey Definitely a venue highly recommended to those after a great culinary experience in a cozy environment and friendly efficient service....not cheap but well worth the money !

Another great night out at arguably the best restaurant inside Chichester. Good menu options, decent wine options, great service. Beautifully presented food with exquisite tastes. All Good. Wine is a bit expensive.

Got to be honest only went here as we were staying at B & B close by. Wow did we love it though. The service was just excellent and the food was superb. We loved every one of the three courses and nice selection of wine by the glass too. Would absolutely 100% recommend you take in the pre theatre menu.

Our first time in Chichester as part of our latest road trip. Our visit was primarily to see Redlands. We had a pre-theatre meal at Purchases and were really impressed. We had a beautifully presented, tasty meal in a lovely atmosphere with good professional service at a reasonable price. Thoroughly recommend Purchases.

Sep 2024 • Couples This was our third visit to Purchases this time to celebrate our 28th Wedding Anniversary and as previously the food was great. However our evening was spoiled by another table of four who were continually shouting at top their voices the entire evening. It was also affecting the enjoyment of another couple on a table next to us Therefore the staff must all have picked up on this as you could have heard this table a mile away let alone from a few feet away, I therefore think someone from the restaurant should have had a quite word with them to keep the volume down, I myself was very close to doing it myself. However what we did once hurriedly finish our main meals and pay the bill and leave instead of having a dessert which we would normally do. We are booked again for a Xmas meal with a group friends but after last nights experience we are thinking of cancelling as I think it is a restaurant responsibility to ensure all the customers have a good time not just the people who shout the most.

I went to the restaurant to celebrate my birthday, hoping for a cozy and intimate evening with my partner. What I experienced was beyond my expectations—a wonderful dinner and a dessert that spoke straight to my soul.

Oh wow! Spur of the moment booking for lunch Saturday. Not disappointed whatsoever. Wife and I had their signature Beef Wellington- one of the best meals I’ve had for a very long time, everything on the plate was amazing. Deserts were again on a different level. Great service staff very chatty. Brilliant! We are coming back.

Friendly and helpful service from the moment we arrived til we left. One of our party had a wheelchair and the team seamlessly helped. The staff were so passionate particularly at the bar, where a member of the team kindly let us try some of the cocktail syrups that they make on the premises. We ordered limonchello spritz after trying the Purchases own limonchello and it's well worth a try! All the food was delicious. Highly recommend!

Great IPA Camden beer and fine foods. Staff were helpful and even on a busy Saturday all was well prepared and the evening turned out perfect. Went again for lunch this weekend. Food excellent. Service excellent and great interior.

We were recently recommended to Purchases by a friend so we decided to celebrate my husbands birthday there. Was such a wonderful experience - the atmosphere - the food - the service - couldn’t fault anything at all. Just returned on Saturday night again with another couple as we knew instinctively they would love it too. Again such a magical and great evening. Great menu- beautifully presented and wonderful flavours. We had asked for a specific table and we were lucky enough to be granted our request - we initially had a predinner drink in the garden area - so pretty and all lit up with fairy lights - such a buzzy happy atmosphere. We spoke to Tim who was extremely lovely chap and is owner we believe Nothing is too much trouble and again it was another birthday celebration Beef Wellington is amazing ! Will definitely be returning soon again

Two stars only for the quality of the staff. Gin infused trout starter excellent .... but it ends there... Main course of Summer Vegetable Risotto NO STARS! The only summer vegetable being a few pea shoots, the stodgy risotto was made virtually inedible by being smothered in green pesto producing an oily, indigestible mess. Not a sauce vierge! Where were the summer vegetables the client was expecting???? Main course Plaice was fine, steamed and somewhat flaccid, where was the noisette butter dressing??? Only a thin and unappetising thin oil dressed the fish. Coffee rather than dessert. We won't be back!

Delicious lunch as a group of 6 before the races. Really friendly waiters. We enjoyed the local sparking wine. We had a light lunch of starters and salads, but they were really generous with the meat/ fish, so we left full up. Would highly recommend!

Terrible lunch with very boney plaice which was very small and unpleasant to eat. Kept thinking I would get a bone in my throat -such stress - just awful ! I counted 4 Parmentier potatoes - ridiculous - felt I was on a starvation diet ! The capers were non existent , no lemon zest - no sauce - no nothing ! And at the price charged felt cheated - it was a milestone celebration- no table service - had to chase bill … it used to be so good ..,,

Another beautiful meal here this evening. Great tasting wine to compliment the meal. The beef wellington is to die for, the Catch of the day was also stunning apparently. With crab for starters and gin cured trout for starters as well. The food is pure heaven. Add the friendly service and the excellent bar manager Sam and his team and you have an all round dining experience that is perfect. We shall be returning soon.

We had a great time staying at the Purchases and will definetly come back! It's rather small (5 rooms I think) so it's more personal. The hosts are amazing and the food is delicious. Our room (nr 5) was spacious and latest from 11pm (closing time of restaurant) it was really quiet. The rooms are on the 2nd floor and there are offices on 1st so no indoor noise from the restaurant. The location is great for use of public transport, train station is about 10mins away, bus stops around 5mins. Two potential downsides: there is no lift and no AC (only fans) but for us that was okay.

My first visit to this restaurant and for sure will not be my last. Staff are exceptional. We had a most wonderful lady who had an intuitive nature. My friends lamb main course was not quite up to standard and the waitress immediately realised something was amiss. She offered to exchange the course for something different, which in fact was a ribeye steak, which was superb. I ordered soft shell crab in tempura, followed by arrancini. Both dishes were very good. But for me the crowning glory was a dessert of warm rice pudding with clotted cream ice cream with extra nutmeg. I have not had rice pudding for yonks, so this was a real treat indeed. It's not too often you actually see warm rice pudding on a menu these days. Overall the restaurant was well worth a visit. My rating would be 8.5/10, staff were outstanding and that speaks volumes in my book.

Came to purchases Saturday 25th may for dinner after the races, came with my boyfriend and his friend, unfortunately I booked for the following Saturday however despite it being evidently busy the man on reception was amazing and shuffled some things around and got us sat. He was a life saver. And the food and service overall was outstanding, would recommend to anyone looking for a really lovely atmosphere with even better staff, food and cocktails . Thank you purchases for a great evening and thank you for fitting us in despite our mess up!

A unique dinning experience. Undoubtedly the best dining experience in Chichester. From the time we walked in, to when we left, the staff were first class. The food was excellent and although they had some regular favourites, the had some Delicious starters,main courses and desserts.

The service was good, but the food was bland and neither myself nor my girlfriend enjoyed it very much. My starter and main (pork cheeks and a beef-based replacement for the pork main course) were tasteless, and my girlfriend said her starter was similarly tasteless (she had the soft shell crab) and her main didn’t make any sense (sea bass with a sauce that tasted like nothing we’d ever had before, and not in a good way). The only decent course was the cheese we had for dessert. I hope it was just a bad night for the restaurant; if it wasn’t then I don’t recommend it.

Fantastic from start to finish! Purchases is a small but cosy slice of bliss! A beautiful property with vibrant, attentive and professional staff! The bed was comfortable, modern and fully working TV, nice touch of the motion sensor light in the bathroom! Thank you to your housekeeping lady who popped our milk out on the windowsill to keep it cool - how very considerate! We also had a lovely interaction with a member of your waitstaff at breakfast on the Saturday morning! Other businesses can learn a lot from you! Everyone, in fact, was delightful to deal with! Keep up the good work!!!

This restaurant seems to have unacceptable communication issues and absolutely terrible customer service which totally ruined our evening. As someone making a booking with a Guide Dog the restaurant were sent a special request as part of that procedure. (A table next to a wall and away from any entrance or exit was requested so the dog could settle out of the way of everyone.) This is usual and never a problem with any other restaurants / pubs / hotels etc. Our booking was confirmed by email and was nearly a month before the booking date. Then we received a phone call a week before the booking when the special request was again checked and confirmed. Then a few days before the booking we received a phone checking we still wanted the booking. Once again the special request was mentioned and confirmed. Then on the day, two hours before the booking we phoned the restaurant to check all was okay and we were reassured by them. Once again the special request was checked. Then 15mins before our booking we received a phone call asking if we were still coming as we were late. We were not but we reiterated our special request then too. When we arrived we were taken to a back room and given a table not next to a wall, right next to the entrance to the room which both public and staff use, and one very close indeed to another table. The staff fussed around, leaving us standing in the middle of the restaurant, with several different staff informing us that was "all they had", offering us the chance to sit and wait for they "didn't know how long" in an outdoor terrace (in February!). Absolutely no kindness was shown or reasonable apology for an inappropriate table. We were offered a credit note for drinks at another visit but since we are from Worcestershire and after our insensitive treatment this was pointless and felt like a way of being fobbed off. We were very disappointed indeed having had the restaurant recommended for our holiday in the Chichester area. However The Ivy around the corner, despite turning up without a booking, were sympathetically outstanding in their welcoming, staff politeness and kindness, accommodating the dog and serving very good food. Needless to say we would not recommend Purchases to anyone.

We have been to this restaurant many times but though the atmosphere is great , sadly the service today ( 23rdFebruary 2024) was very sloppy indeed ( and remember this is an expensive venue with service changes added to the final bill,automatically) . We were half way through our main course and still waiting on two glasses of red wine. I finally had to get up and find someone at the bar area to ask again for it as there wasn’t a waiter or waitress in sight! Forgotten of course. When it came to getting the Bill , again every waiter seemed to have vanished from the room . Nobody supervising the restaurant! Eventually I got the Bill but then surprise, surprise all the waiting staff had disappeared again, so difficulty in paying. Not good enough but still a service charge added and a bill on a modest set lunch for two of over £90 ! They need to pull their socks up or lose clientele in a competitive field.

Needed somewhere close to the theatre for dinner before a show and having discovered this great venue it will become our go to place. Lovely welcome as soon as we arrived, and throughout we couldn't fault the service by any of the staff. Beautiful restaurant, great ambience with lovely music at just the right volume. We had 2 courses off the set menu and all the food was delicious and beautifully presented. The pork cheeks just melted in your mouth and I asked if different veg could be served with the trout which they happily did. Will be back.

Birthday celebration at Purchases. Service was excellent as usual, as was the food, pork cheeks were melt in the mouth and fillet steak perfectly cooked. Purchases has become our 'go to' restaurant. We have already rebooked for a couple of weeks time for another family occasion.

Had a lovely meal there for my birthday. Cheerful staff and good food. As it was a Tuesday we got a glass of fizz each and had we gone for the set menu there would have been 20%off what more could you ask for.

We had a delicious meal. I had the smoked duck followed by the beef Wellington. My husband enjoyed the soft shell crab and fillet steak. Couldn't fault the dishes.

My daughter and I had dinner last night, 13th January, and we both thought our meals were excellent. I have eaten here over the years but the meal last night stands out. She loved the cocktails at the bar - not for me - I prefer a glass of wine. I then had the beef wellington which was tender and delicious, beautifully presented with a variety of vegetables each cooked to perfection She had trout encased in herbs served on white beans which she really enjoyed. The wine was excellent, service friendly and efficient and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. It was not cheap but worth every penny. I think it will be our "mother and daughter" venue when she comes to visit Chichester.

Decided to meet for late birthday lunch with a friend as we've eaten here before, but we didn't book thinking "it's January nobody can afford to eat out" to find they were almost fully booked but luckily did have a table for 2 available. We ordered drinks; a gin & tonic and my first-ever Cosmopolitan (made with home made orange liqueur), which was absolutely delicious. We were offered bread and I chose the Rosemary & Seasalt version which was every bit as yummy as I remembered. (So yummy I had to ask for a second slice!). We decided to order 2 courses from the set menu. My friend had the Fish (cod) and Triple Cooked Chips served with Mushy peas and a huge dollop of tartar sauce, while I went for the Crispy Pork Belly with Champ Potatoes, Chorizo, Burnt Apple Puree and Mustard Sauce. Not being a fan of kale I asked if they could substitute a different veg and my dish arrived with a perfectly cooked charred carrot. The only minor complaint I had was the crackling which wasn't crispy but they happily took it and crisped it up for me. The pork was tender and juicy and the batter on the fish light and crispy as were the chips. (You know the food is good when you feel compelled to say "ohhhhh" after each mouthful!) The lemon posset we both had for dessert exceeded expectations as did the Clementine Sorbet served with it. Even though the plates looked like a work of art, the portions sizes were perfect, and we felt just full when we'd finished. (I couldn't have managed a starter as well, ask J tempting as they looked.) Two courses plus drinks and a coffee came to £83 including service charge which we both thought was well worth it. As busy as they were, we weren't rushed at all and were able to spend a leisurely 2 hours here. I can honestly say, no exaggeration, that if this was my last meal on earth, I'd die happy! Now trying to persuade co-workers to come here next Christmas.

I always enjoyed going for drinks/food to Purchases, but yesterday was a big disappointment. Yes, yesterday was a NYE and a busy day for them, so I understand not all the staff were so experienced, but we deserved at least a proper apology after the waitress spilled drinks on our table. We, four of us, got there in the late afternoon and sat in the garden where it wasn't overly busy at that time. Firstly, bringing drinks that weren't even for our table to us, we ordered something else, and then spilling all three drinks all over our table and us (two of them redish colour, seemed like tomato juice or similar in them) without a proper apology. The drinks went on my gloves and my husband's coat - I was glad that I had a blanket over my new coat, so the blanket got it instead of my new coat. I really liked Purcheses, but I think we deserved at least a proper apology, at least from the waitress who caused it. Telling the manager/owner that drinks got spilled over our table and over us, he got a waiter to clean the floor. The waiter came and threw a bucket of water on the ground and left. At least the owner/manager came to clean it properly, as well as the table. We finally got our drinks. Asking for the bill at the end, the owner/manager brought the bill to us and I really thought that he will say at least you can have a drink on us given what has happened, I jokingly made a remark about a discount for the disaster, but he just charged us and took the whole price and left. After going there for a few years, I was really disappointed with how the issue was dealt with. What a shame as I told our friends who came to visit us for NYE from London about that place, and although we all understand that it was a busy day for them and this can happen to anyone, we thought they really could deal with it all much more professionally. What a disappointment...

Had a lovely start to our New Years Eve bar crawl last night as we came here, and a really kind gentleman (around his 50s) was able to seat us in the tropical bar for cocktails. Service and Drinks are always amazing, would definitely recommend going here for a drink if you’re in the area !
