What a find, a very quintessential English country pub serving local beers as well as a very stocked back shelf and wine cellar. The welcome is warm and very friendly from the staff and locals alike. Not once did we finish our meals and head home, as we started conversations with the locals and fellow guests, that meant for a very social atmosphere. There is a good lunch menu and a very comprehensive evening menu. I promise you will want to come back to try "something else" off the menu, I know we did and we soon realised that we had to pick either starters & main or main & desert due to the larger portions you receive.

Really lovely pub, visited twice during our stay in the area. Delicious food, very friendly staff and a good atmosphere when busy. Also very dog friendly, our dog was spoilt with treats and we were given tables with space for him to be comfortable sat by us.

The Black Horse . This is a gem, an attractive old country pub situated amongst lovely rolling hills . Great food , an excellent chef , friendly and welcoming staff . My friends and I have enjoyed lunch here maybe half a dozen times over the last year . We visit many pubs and this is amongst our favourites. Today no exception. One comment , today a number of well behaved walkers turned up , bought little and ate their own sandwiches on the premises . Rather sad for them to carry their bread and completely to miss out on a not expensive menu which would have left them with a special memory. We assume they received permission to do that. However it just looks bad and does little to support a deserving business. My French pal with us (who ran his own hotel and restaurant ) was a little shocked . So merely a plea from a fan , to walkers ( I am one) try to honour our pubs with business and don’t take shameful advantage, otherwise we will all lose them. Sermon over , regards to all.

Was really looking forward to dinner at this pub during our short visit to the Cotswolds. Ordered two starters. The prawns in the prawn cocktail were ok, but there was no sauce, just salad! We then ordered the mains. I went for the rib eye steak, medium rare. It came out overcooked, definitely not medium rare, and the outside in parts were burned. When I told the waitress after cutting into it, she took it away, no apology, and returned with it sliced in two...saying it was medium rare and if I wanted it replaced then I would have to pay another £5!! I then asked to see the Manager who was very annoyed I had complained and told the waitress it had spoilt my night... and disputed everything I was saying...she said "well one persons medium rare ....". She was so rude. She stormed off saying we would not be charged for my meal. No apology again. Such bad customer service. Needless to say we won't be back. I suggest the chef needs extra training, as I am the third person on here who had their steak I declined.

We called at the Black Horse for lunch, and found a charming real local with good beer great food and very friendly staff who looked after us. It's great value for money, but it's the welcoming staff that makes it so special. It's in a really pretty Cotswold village, and you almost feel that you've been transported back in time! I can't comment on the food as we just stopping in the middle of our walk for coffee and loo break BUT I was impressed with the friendly and helpful service, the quality of the coffee and particularly the toilets. The latter with Molten Brown soap dispenser and proper hand drier was a good indicator of a pub that cared. This is a walk I'd do again and I will stop for another coffee. Tip to pub.... perhaps a couple of nice home made cakes for those just stopping for coffee?

Came here as we stayed in walking distance. It's the one and only pub in Naunton so an easy choice. The people were so friendly and nice, the food was simple and real and portions enormous. Good value wines and a nice tasting of local Ales. Got chatting to some of the locals who were lovely, too. Instead of adding a service charge the owner gave me a discount for paying cash. Loved the whole experience!

We were staying down the road at a small B&B outside the picturesque village of Naunton and looking for a quintessential Cotswold pub. Wow! We definitely hit the jackpot with the Black Horse! The weather was so lovely that we ate outside on the patio. Service was prompt and we enjoyed a hearty laugh with our Glaswegian server. We loved that the pub is both dog-friendly and vegetarian-friendly too. Parking is across the street or along the narrow street which runs through Naunton.

Lovely Cotswold pub with friendly service and a nice ambience. Went there for an evening meal with friends having been there many times over the years. The food has always been very good but I and my friends were a little disappointed this time. I had a chicken dish which was a little overcooked and dry, ok but not as good as we have had before. Others in the group felt their meal was ok but not as good as they've had before. Nothing was so bad as to need complaining about. It's still a great pub to visit and I'm sure this was just a blip.

The service was very good and the menu varied. On a Monday evening the locals decide what will be on the menu (they decide the week before). So it's a three course meal for £10. The week we went it was chicken liver pate with salt and toast or sweet corn chowder. Mains were ham and parsley sauce with mashed potatoes and vegetables. With a choice of desserts. You could go up as many times as you wanted. Dogs are also very welcome. Locals are very friendly and the atmosphere was plesant.

The choice of food for a Thursday night was more than enough. Nice special board and I would recommend the mussels in creamy cider and fish. We went here today for Sunday lunch with family including an 8 month old baby. Very friendly bar staff and were happy to accommodate babies and dogs. They had very good high chairs, better than the standard wooden ones that never have trays. There weren't changing facilities in the ladies toilets but I didn't have chance to know if there was one elsewhere. The food was good but there were a few disappointments. The pork had no crackling, even though stated on the menu and the beef was well done, even though the waitress gave us a heads up it would be rare. We like our beef rare so this was a shame. We were given plenty of veg though and it was well seasoned and tasty. The puddings were very good.

Just been to this traditional Cotswold pub for dinner again. The service was very friendly with a great welcome from staff. Nice garden at the back we sat in and yes it was sunny for a time. I had whitebait followed by a steak which was cooked to perfection and a good sized portion. They said they had a new chef and he is obviously doing a great job. The local beers were well kept and a good range of wines were available. They are obviously having all the toilets completely refurbished as we had to use temporary outside ones but unlike the last reviewer we found these excellent even having flowers in the gents! All round great pub. Thankyou.

Had a few meals here and it is truly hit and miss. Sometimes it is spot on and other times the food is cold and lacks any flavour (gravy etc.).Beer is the same, when it is on it is great, but when it is off you can't finish the flat pint. The staff also go by the same theme, a couple are really helpful, but then others have an attitude problem to say the least! The cleanliness is not great at all. The toilets are horrible, and glimpses into the kitchen area from the garden leave you questioning the state of it. With a hygiene rating of 3 you know it's reasonable but not well looked after. We may pop in for a drink with friends, but for us the food will be off the menu.

We were staying at a local property for a hen weekend and could walk to this pub. We decided to visit for lunch on the Saturday, we did book due to us being a party of 14, but we did not have to pre-order which was good. Lovely looking cotswold pub, lovely village location. Warm welcome when we arrived. Nice true pup atmosphere inside. Dogs are allowed which is good. The menu had a good choice on. However none of us were overly impressed with the food, the portions were large, but it just wasn't as tasty as we'd have liked. Most of us chose try lasagne which was pretty dry. One had the sausage and mash and that did look good!Reasonably priced & friendly staff, food could improve but lovely atmosphere.

Ate and drank here whilst staying in the village for a weekend. We were a little concerned at being strangers in a well used village pub, however my Girlfriend and I were made to feel very welcome by all. The food was above average pub food with lots of options on the specials board. Both of our meals were well cooked and tasty. The pub does allow dogs so if you don't like the thought of dogs around your feet whilst you eat then you may be put off, however this wasn't an issue for us. Both food and drink were fairly pricey and the decor is a little dated, however we had a good night here and would prob come back if we were staying in the area again.

The staff were very kind and helpful, and the service was fast and efficient. It really was an excellent meal, and value for money, and in a beautiful setting. It was really busy with walkers. Had lunch here last week as we were staying in the village and wanted to stay local. The pub is quite small, four of us sat in the bar area with two dogs and we had to keep moving the dogs so that people could squeeze by. The food was very nice, a good selection on the main menu and a specials board too. It was well cooked and good sized portions. The staff were helpful and friendly. The only thing letting the pub down is its cleanliness. The ladies toilet was filthy, with cobwebs and general dirt/dust on the side/shelves. The actual toilet was clean I hasten to add. In the bar area I put my bag on a shelf behind me and that had dirt and debris on it, and there were also lots of cobwebs on the beams and pictures. The windows were dirty too. It was a shame because we enjoyed the food but to be honest if we'd seen the state of the loos before we ordered we probably wouldn't have eaten there. Plus we would have gone back for sunday lunch but decided to try elsewhere

Thank you so much to Jo and Dave for our special day. We came in to view a few weeks before, yes weeks! And had thirty people. By the time of our wedding we had fifty people, a marquee in the garden and it was awesome. We had the back bar and then into the garden, which they had prepared with the marquees. There was lighting and heating and even a water fountain in the centre. It was awesome. We had sirloin of beef and they came around throughout the meal offering more slices of beef and more veg. For a traditional English wedding at a very affordable price I would recommend whole heartedly. The local villagers helped and were there on the night watching the rugby so we could send them through drinks. I can't recommend this place enough. Thank you so much from Mr and Mrs Hill!!

The Black Horse Inn is a proper Cotswold pub and it was absolutely full. We managed to get a table although we hadn't booked and were soon seated with pints of Donningtons real ale. The haggis, neeps and tatties was scrumptious. My husband had the roast pork which he declared with acceptable but nothing special. The staff were very welcoming and friendly as were fellow diners. There are tables out front on a patio area and a small area for parking. Very popular spot for hikers and the menu reflects this as it offers a selection of sandwiches/light lunches as well as the usual pub "stables" of steak & ale pie, fish n chips etc. Very comfortable, welcome stop.

A proper old fashioned pub with great food. Plus I never eat pudding but has to here as it was so welcoming. Thanks to all of you at the Black Horse. Great.

It was my partner's birthday and we had visited a couple of Cotswold villages, we wanted some food and a warm room, we were driving near Naunton and thought we would try The Black Horse. We were greeted by a friendly, humorous owner who provided a good selection of food of which each of us could easily choose 3 or 4 meals from either the hard copy menu or the choices on the blackboard. We were told our choices would take around 25 minutes which suited us fine. We took 2 halves of Guiness to a table by a real fire and sure enough in just over 20 minutes our food was served, it was hot, well presented and delicious. We shared a dessert as we were almost full! In our time there there were a number of humorous comments floating around and we felt very comfortable being with the locals a feeling not always felt in other village pubs around the country.

We were staying in Nauton and visited the pub three times. The staff were very friendly and it had a great local atmosphere. There were lots of dogs which added to the feeling in the pub. We ate there one night. The food was't bad value, my steak was average, but my partners game pot was lovely. Would recommend as a super local to visit.

On a round walk from lower slaughter we made a point of making the black horse inn our half way pit stop. A lovely relaxed ambiance, roaring fire, friendly staff, great ale and fantastic food. I could have stayed here all day. Perfect pub grub cooked to order so expect a delay (we waited 30 minutes for steak pie). Came with heaps of veg as well which was a pleasant change to some of the pub food I've eaten recently. Excellent and well worth a visit.

Thanks for taking the trouble to cook a vegan meal for our daughter alongside two other (also lovely) dishes from the menu. The vegan meal was stir fried vegetables in a coconut sauce on a bed of rice. Also a lovely onion soup to start. We were impressed by the willingness of the chef to cook something vegan and the creativity and flair that she showed in making something different to the usual vegan option! Well worth the walk from Guiting Power!

Visited whilst staying at a nearby holiday cottage, recommended by our chef the previous evening.8 of us and our dog enjoyed friendly service in a relaxed dining room. Made a very pleasant change to have a drinks order taken and promptly brought to the table. Roast beef, lamb and fish and chips were all of excellent quality served on hot plates! No room for pudding but it was offered on small chalk boards. Impressed by all areas - thank you for adding another great meal to our special weekend away.

Walking from Bourton-on-the-Water to Guiting Power on a walking tour of the Cotswolds we took a small detour to visit Naunton. We had a really delicious and relaxed lunch at The Black Horse Inn.

We've stopped here twice on walks from Bourton-on-the-Water to Guiting Power and it's been terrific both times. The Black Horse seems like a local pub that's also popular with walkers. The food and beer are delicious. I especially remember the green salad with warm goat cheese on top. The atmosphere is friendly and inviting. Last time we ate indoors and this time on the outside patio. Both were lovely.

We went to the Black Horse for Sunday lunch as a stop-over for a circular walk to/from Guiting Power (lovely walk by the way – around 5 miles). It was just great. Food was served promptly, everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Our kids loved Molly the terrier. You feel this is a locals + walkers' pub, not a "gastropub" – and that suited us! I had the homemade mint & pea soup with fresh warm bread. Delicious, save that the soup could have been served hotter. Husband and son had the roast beef and roast pork respectively – went down a treat. By 2pm, they had ran out of most desserts unfortunately (pretty much only ice-cream left), but that goes to show it's a popular place. Very good value.

We stopped here having done a six mile walk in local rolling countryside - not to be missed. the welcome was good - and there were tables available inside to escape a girly crowd outside. We came in for a sandwich and ended up with great Sunday roasts - pork was really good, the beef was way above pub average, both with generous, well cooked veg, Yorkshires and gravy. Very filling, great value. Next Sherborne (not Eton, on principle) mess - came in a half pint tankard with ice cream - very yum. Two pints of cider, bottle of rose plus a couple of top-up glasses, total £60 odd. Very reasonable, good atmosphere, busy at Sunday lunchtime (hurrah), yet the service was capable, calm and pretty quick. We'll come here again and suggest you do too.

2 local ales 2 cider, Guiness, Carlsburgh and San Miguel all on draft, plenty of wines. Cold inside but warmed up after an 80 mins when the fire got lit.. plenty of locals and dogs.. exept if you like your food stared by the pets when early other clients brushing them away. (they're not all pet lovers that were in)Was hoping it was all this place lived up to, although no chef in.. another stood in ... great midweek expectations... we thought great and service was very quick.... but... Chilli Con Carne off specials, small size for the price, presented well and tadsted great... missing a side (not the nachos) a bread (no chips..... a small bowl makes a big dfference) . Wife was knicking my food, and shes skinny...we generally never eat puddings, so went home hungry. Same too for my meal off the evening menu no salad option with fish or pie?.. over priced for value and size, when told they are usually large.. i was worried i might drink less... i drank more than ate...But.... again if you dont want a big meal.... this is ideal.. Ok my rating is low but we know what we want.. it's everything you would want to expect but fell short on this occasion? and were not usually fussy... I think they have been overhyped to bring business in by regulars and locals but i might have gone in, on the wrong day to be fair... As a public House too no WIFI to public. big mistake... considering its remote.. public should be public... get that one sorted and more guest ales...!!! please otherwise could have got a 4

We dined here on Friday 31st Jan 2014 - it was beautiful! The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming, with many locals laughing and chatting around the bar. The pub is dog friendly which is lovely, when they're roaming around - although understandably this isn't for everyone. It appears that most tables were reserved, so I would recommended ringing to book a table for a Friday/Saturday.I had pate to start with (duck and orange I think?) which was served with triangles of toast and side salad - the portions were a great size, if not quite big for a starter - but I'm not complaining because it was beautiful!! My fiance had the home-made fishcakes to start with - two huge burger sized fish cakes with salad.. he enjoyed every bite!! I then had the 10oz steak with chips and salad which was just incredible.. the meat was cooked to perfection with no grizzle! My fiance had the home-made lasagne and garlic bread and again enjoyed every bite!! The meals were reasonably priced for the portion sizes, although not the cheapest meal in total. We would definitely dine here again if were in the lovely village of Naunton again.

My wife and I stopped here for lunch half way around the Slaughters walk. Very friendly welcome, good atmosphere, excellent Donningtons beer. Good menu, we had the loin of pork and liver, bacon and onions followed by chocolate pud. Excellent quality and quantity, only complaint was that the veg was overcooked. This is a good country pub which we have visited many times over the past 25 years with varying degrees of success, obviously at present it is in good hands and we will revisit soon.

Friendly, staff and clientele, lots of locals, some tourists, comfortable, Have the specials, all are delicious, we were just enjoying our drinks and some locals came in, and we overheard one of the women say THATS SO MOLLY! - my daughter and I looked at each other thinking - what a great British expression - later the lady came by and said Hi, and we found out Molly is her cute dog running around the pub, and her artist friend had painted a picture - the painting was So Molly! Fun time for us in the Cotswolds = Also when there we stayed at GLEED COTTAGE - very nice - little outdoor area to get some sun, fireplace if its cool (It wasnt when we were there) nice neighbors (Scary driving on the narrow winding road, rent a small car no matter what the car rental agents say - put your luggage on the roof if you have to - to save yourself the heart attack

Staying in Naunton with a group of 9 + 1 dog (dog friendly pub), so popped in at lunchtime to reserve a table for the evening. Quickly done with no hassle. Turned up on time, table ready and drinks service from bar fairly prompt. Pretty good standard menu supplemented by daily specials board. A couple of people ordered food which we we're then told was unavailable, but that was because we'd missed the bit on the board which said "N/A", so not the pub's fault. Having eaten earlier we all just went for mains, which comprised of 2 x duck confit (falling off the bone), 2 x gammon (comes standard with fried egg but good sized gammon), 1 x fish and chips (no other vegetarian opions, but this was a very good portion), 1 x local burger (massive), 1 x sirloin steak (a bit too much fat, but cooked as requested), 1 x pub's own fishcakes (clearly not shop bought), and my meal, 1 x steak and kidney pie (wanted the liver and onions but despite this being sold out I don't think I missed out as this was the best S&K pie I've had in ages). Almost nothing was left by anyone. Service was pretty prompt and the meals were all delivered together. Total bill incl. drinks was £122.85 so, despite some large glasses of wine, this was a very reasonably priced meal. Recommended.

Please rectify your mistakes with orders in a manner that ensures everybody retains some dignity. Don’t assume that your location will carry your reputation. Customer service was unsatisfactory. A messed up order of chips. Simple - one bowl of cheesy and one normal bowl. Cheesy chips were, by repute, massive and the normal was a cereal bowl full. Instead we had 2 cereal bowls full one bowl over cooked the other undercooked. Though it may sound picky, we had in fact paid for a substantially larger portion and had planned this pub as a pit stop half way around a 15 mile walk! The response – “go to the bar and ask for a pound back is that ok?” Dear Reader, would you do this? How embarrassing, there were ample opportunities for the pound to be returned or even better some more chips! To add insult to injury some of the staff then came into the small gardens and all lit up filling the place with foul carcinogenic stench - and complained about their boss! There were more points that would raise even more alarm but I want to keep this balanced. This was a great shame as the pub is in an idyllic location, the sunshine meant that there was otherwise a good atmosphere and there were others eating meals that did look very nice. But, I felt ripped off and that my custom was not valued. An icy or rude response from the owners will indicate the how much they value feedback and confirm the misplaced self assuredness of these people.

I have already reviewed our local pub this year, but every one of the guests in my holiday cottage have remarked on the food and friendliness of this establishment. One couple even plan to come back to stay on the strength of being able to go back to the Black Horse for a steak! Everyone, also appreciates the fact that both children and animals are made welcome, a fact that some other restaurants and pubs could perhaps take a note of.

Wow! We had been recommended to try the steak in this wonderful country inn, which we did a few months ago and it was as good as promised, if not better. So when we were wondering where to try for a really traditional roast beef Sunday lunch, we booked again. The menu was small, which is always encouraging as you know it is all cooked fresh ... my chicken liver and herb pate was full of flavour, as were the other starters around the table - then a very generously filled plate of the most succulent roast beef was presented, with 3 fresh vegetables and roast potatoes, home made gravy and horseradish sauce that also tasted home made. Truly heavenly. My partner just couldn't finish his serving of beef, but help was at hand in the form of the pub dog ... good as gold but she had obviously spotted the weak link in our party :-)

Excellent restaurant in a very beautiful hotel where I celebrated my birthday with a a small group of friends. Last year I also enjoyed an evening meal here with my partner. Ambience, service and food were perfect. Apéritifs in the lounge, well-spaced tables in the restaurant, excellent, polite and friendly staff, delicious food and lovely surroundings. By far the best restaurant I have been to in years.

We attended a Wedding at Fosse Manor (in their Hyde Barn). The wedding catering was excellent. It is confusing to read the other reviews here as there was no actual restaurant on site that we could see - just the wedding banquet room and adjoining bar. Breakfast however was not good. Pre-cooked under 3 heat lamps and self-service. The tea was very weak even after adding more tea-bags! The breakfast room was styled like a hostel with long trestle tables for lots of guests to sit together, and was extremely noisy. After a night spent in the terrible accommodation here (for which we have written a separate review) we did not enjoy this experience at all. A shame, as the Wedding catering itself was very well done and managed.

Yesterday we visited this wonderful place. Very cozy place, not noisy, but there were people around. Nice service staff greeted us with smiles and politely showed us to the table. The dishes were served in original dishes, with beautiful presentation. We started with king prawns with garlic, it's something incredible! Be sure to try it! And a salad with prawns, bacon. For the main course I chose Sebas fish, prawns and vegetables. The fish was amazing!!! I really liked the delicate sauce. I rarely eat the whole portion, but yesterday I did it easily. My husband chose a burger. It was a great huge burger! My man was satisfied and full. For dessert we took creme brulee and toffee pudding. A magnificent dessert!
