Popped in today for a relaxed pub lunch whilst on a return journey back to Cornwall. Searched prior to our journey and selected The Black Horse as we were travelling with our dog and it seemed dog friendly, as it turned out it was exceptionally dog friendly. As the weather was great we sat outside and enjoys rolls that were amazing which came with a lovely side salad. Would highly recommend.

A six mile circular walk from home with this lovely pub our halfway stop. Always a welcome lunch spot. Plain simple baguettes accompanied by excellent beer. Lovely old traditional pub with a warm welcome. Outside tables only at the moment with Covid restrictions and the staff are running all over the place but still smiling! Look forward to lunching inside the cosy bars when restrictions end. (Photo is view from inside in non covid days)

This is a great pub; the only one of its kind around. Look at the reviews and see why people rate it so highly. So very disappointed that on one of our fairly regular visits for lunch, the young staff were imposing thumping music from an iPhone on the place. I mentioned to them that it is not normal, but this had little effect. Hopefully this was a one-off and not a permanent change from the normally delightful character.

We visited as a family group for lunch. The pub is a lovely old fashioned inn dating from the 14th century. The lounge used to be the Magistrates jail and still has bars on the window. There is a lovely open fire and nice period decor. The beers are good - Gem, Otter, Courage and a guest beer. Cider also a speciality but we did not try that. The food was excellent with five specials for lunch and 2 were vegetarian. I had pork in cider which was served with mash and peas - lovely flavour. Others had chilli con carne and corned beef hash with an egg on top. It is a pub with atmosphere and a good loyal clientele of local customers so definitely worth a visit. I think there is no food in the evening so aim for a lunchtime visit and no food on Sundays.

We had been told about The Blackhorse and the pub quiz they have every Tuesday evening so we thought we'd give it a try. Firstly the old world pub itself is lovely with two lovely friendly girls behind the bar to look after you. There was no evidence of a landlord or landlady they obviously leave the running of this very busy pub to these two very capable girls. The beers are poured from the barrel are well managed and superb. The Tuesday quiz is well run and organised by a professional quizmaster who marks all the sheets himself. The evening is obviously very much enjoyed by lots of locals and regulars. Its a traditional drinking house with loads of atmosphere and good beer. It is what it is. What more could you ask for. It will certainly be on our list of favourites.

We were visiting Clapton in Gordano and went here for lunch with friends. This is just as an English country pub should be - locals sitting with their drinks in the crowded bar, fire lit on a cool day, good choice of blackboard food and menu for bar snacks. This was a Saturday lunchtime and very busy but there was still room in the car park and we were able to sit in a separate, quiet room to eat and talk easily. The service was friendly and quick and the food appetisingly presented. The parsnip and rosemary soup was excellent and served with warm crusty bread. Beef in red wine sauce was voted "as good as Granny made" and the home made apple crumble and custard was also much appreciated. The coffee was good. We were looking for a cooked lunch really at 1.35pm but the blackboard outside had five hot dishes crossed out and ploughmans, baguettes etc. left. The lady who served us said she could come up with some beef curry so we settled for that and sat in the garden. There was plenty of beef in the curry albeit the sauce, pickles and nan bread perhaps of supermarket quality. Not out to criticise though, the meal was perfectly acceptable, just not quite what we were looking for on the day. We had a look inside and it is a fine example of a period English pub, I particularly liked the snug. I imagine the ales are good and if I wanted a beer and cold lunch would be happy to go here.

Went yesterday pm (1/07/15) with an old friend mid-afternoon. A few spaces left in the car park but pretty pleasantly full outside with local drinkers and those who know the pub - they do beer from the cask behind the bar, currently Butcombe Bitter and Courage - lovely drop of stuff on a warm afternoon. we sat inside as the sun was too strong and the 5th star is dropped due to the very strong smell of woodsmoke in the bar - verging on the unpleasant on a very hot day but Andy Murray was on a surprisingly big screen TV and was winning so all is well with the world. Food is very limited here so it's not the pub for a cooked lunch but the rolls etc are great and good value. All in all a pub of a ind that, sadly, is rare to find these days.

Local and guest beers in barrels - wooden benches in cosy snugs and outdoor seating too. We had a bap/baguette (black pudding and mushroom and bacon and mushroom respectively) - sounded better than they tasted - filled us up but were nothing to write home about - came with a rather manky small salad garnish covered in some sort of thin salad cream. Hot food is available too but one gets the feeling that the place is all about the beer and ambience - spot-on for a proper pub - just don't go expecting locally/ethically sourced or exciting food. Beer we tried was a guesting Butcombe Gold - delish. Will visit again for the atmosphere but take our own sandwiches!!

First time visit for myself to this 14th century pub. Partly flagged stone floors, winged settles, also built in wall benches, other dark wooded seats with benches. Not required on my visit but there is a large log fire for winter days. There is also an inner snug, which still has window bars from the time it was used for the Petty Sessions Gaol. I found the service particularly friendly resulting in cheerful customers, excellent real ale (not driving), together a variety of local ciders. Great simple lunchtime food, which was just what was required at time of visit. If travelling by car (pity) i would think it useful to arrive early to ensure use of car park. An excellent place to take a break and no doubt I will return at sometime in the future. JAE

Returning to Clapton after many years, although The Black Horse has had some major internal structural alterations it retains the wonderful warm atmosphere for which it was famous even in the 1950s. The beers are well kept, the food good and reasonably priced and provides all a traditional country pub attributes beloved of all devotees for decades ... Long may this continue!

Not Michelin starred, but wonderful cider. Well presented food although a very small selection. I enjoyed the Moroccan dish I ordered but really wished I'd tried the Ploughmans that looked superb. A lovely setting, with plenty of garden space to eat outside, although yesterday was not the weather for it.Be aware that they only do pub grub Monday to Saturday and only at lunch time. If you can get someone to drive you there it would be a fabulous place to drink.

Superb traditional pub - straight out of history (it used to be a gaol). We had the fortune to start the session outside in the garden, it clouded over and started to rain where we moved indoors and they lit the fire. A must stop.

Visited on many occasions now, and never been dis appointed, in any respects. Good basic food, and a good selection of real ales, all in good fettle. Taken many friends and Relatives, whom all say it's a fantastic place to go. A hidden dream for the stranger, but for those in the know I welcome oasis...

The passing traveller is never going to find this without being recommended or finding it on a website. It is just off the M5 and you have to drive through some narrow lanes to get there but it is well worth it. There are not many pubs which still have a tap room so you can see the kegs behind the bar. They keep an excellent pint and although we only had a snack lunch it was served swiftly and was very good.If you are passing this way at any time then I recommend you stop here and soak up the atmosphere.

My father-in-law took us here for lunch as he knows I like old English pubs. We arrived at our destination down a windy country land and I wasn't disappointed. There was a magnificent, enormous inglenook fireplace with a fire roaring. The food was delicious. It had a lovely atmosphere and I enjoyed the banter with the locals, who had gathered to watch the rugby. A great experience.

New to this area and went to this lovely old pub with my partner for lunch, heard many good things about the place.Lovely pub, nice staff but shame about some of the customers, I know all pubs have characters but what gives these people the right to think they can monopolise your conversation, I love a good natter but all we said was hello and couldn’t get away without being rude, ended up hiding in the garden to finish our drink!!!!Didn’t bother with lunch so can’t comment on the food. Not sure if we will go back as apparently they are daily regulars.

After reading the positive reviews on trip adviser took a group of friends from work here and we were very disappointed with the quality of the food and quite high prices (for what we ordered). The rooms are great though with plenty of atmosphere and there is a lovely garden, hence 2 stars instead of 1. Disappointed - there are better places in the Portishead area and I'm surprised this is #1.

Lovely little village not far off the M5 (but a bit tricky to find) and this is a quaint little pub with hanging baskets and sheltered tables outside. Further round the back of the car park there is a quiet beer garden with a kids play area. Food was lovely. There was a crowd of locals supping cider outside which added to the charm of the place. We are so tired of busy motorway service station especially the poxy ones on the M5 and this is a real find. Going south, come off at Jnt 19 and head towards Portishead, taking a left turn to Clapton / Clevedon. When you get into the village you need to turn right to Clevedon and pub is just on your right. Look out for the old fashioned telephone box which has been converted into a mini library! You can get back on the M5 at Jnt 20/Clevedon by turning right out of the pub but this is a narrow one-car lane and you meet a lot of horses! Brush up on your reversing skills!!! You have been warned x

Having lived in Portishead over 40 years ago we returned for a sandwich and drink. We got there about 2.10pm and they had stopped serving food. The sign said they only serve food between 12 and 2 which is very restricted but they did make a sandwich for us which was plain but fresh. The atmosphere is very good as a very old pub with flag-stones and beams. The beer was excellant straight from the barrel - Buttcombe and Courage Best.

We went here over the weekend as it has a sunny, lawned beer garden (ideal for the toddler). The pub is a lovely old building with plenty of outside seating too, an outside serving hatch, large car-park and childrens play area. The food is a fairly standard pub menu, however extremely nice and good value. Sandwiches/baguettes are £4,25-£5.50, and there is also a choice of ploughmans, lasagne, soup etc. which are all very reasonably priced. Food is only served until 2pm on Saturday though - so get there early! The pub is also well-decorated inside and I can imagine would be very cosy in the winter (lots of big open fires).Few pubs in the area offer good outdoor seating in proper gardens & good quality (but cheap) pub food. Definitely now one of my favourite pubs in the Bristol area!

An absolute icon of the English pub. Hundreds of years old, locals chatting over cider, dogs laying in the grass, old rifles on the wall and a massive fireplace warming the entire space. If you want the real thing the Black Horse is the place to go. Another note: the locals in their Wellingtons and worn hunting jackets were super friendly even to this California Yank and that is not always the case in these types of places. Older crowd.

This is one of that increasingly rare breeds - a 'proper' pub. Big fireplace with roaring fire in cooler weather, worn flagstone floors, a good selection of real ales and ciders from the barrel, fantastic service and a very warm welcome. There is a always a friendly crowd of locals, a scattering of dogs toasting themselves by the fire and a steady stream of visitors, no doubt drawn to the good beer, good service and excellent fayre. Food is only served at lunchtimes but is excellent - all home made from soups and baguettes to heartier fayre such as chilli, tagine, pies and stews. The village of Clapton in Gordano is just outside Portishead and is well worth the drive through narrow winding lanes to this absolute treasure of a pub. Go there as soon as you can and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
