The service was lovely thea was on her own. Made conversation made sure we was happy. Food was awesome. Came to black horse lunch time with hubby. Met landlady very happy cheerful person

Superb! We called at 11.30 asking if they had availability for 2 people for Sunday roast! Within an hour we were eating! Great staff! Excellent potion sizes and the cauliflower&broccoli cheese was excellent! We will definitely be back.

We came for the breakfast as we’d previously had their takeaway roast dinners during lockdown and we really enjoyed it. Portions were a good size for the money and it was really tasty. My fiancé had the big breakfast and I had the pancake stack with 3 pancakes, fresh fruit and syrup. The pancakes were light and fluffy and came with a massive bowl of fruit. By the time we’d finished we both were stuffed! The breakfast menu is also good value for money because it includes either a cup of tea, a coffee or a glass of fruit juice. The staff were also really friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Had a delicious meal, friendly staff great atmosphere, mixed grill was well worth it.if in the area again wouldn't hesitate to return.

Look, let me say at the outset that I hate criticising local businesses and we try to support them but this was really poor. We went for breakfast. We placed our order and waited at least 40 minutes for it to arrive. My wife’s breakfast was shocking. The bacon was burned, the mushrooms were burned and the black pudding was also burned. Her egg was swimming in horrible, almost black grease. The sausages were missing. I had the ‘big one’ and it wasn’t too bad. My wife sent her breakfast back. In fairness they weren’t going to charge us but as I’d eaten a bit of mine I paid for a ‘small breakfast’. The staff were really apologetic and I felt for them but it was a really disappointing experience.

What a pleasure to find this pub. This was the best pub meal we have eaten in quite a while. The surroundings are very pleasant and we were warmly welcomed. The menu has plenty of choice of types of meal. We were all extremely impressed with our meals, everything was clearly freshly and individually prepared, one of our party wanted to tweak one of the dishes to suit and that was done without any fuss. Of particular note food wise were the chips , served in little enamel cups, which were perfect and the Hunters chicken was lovely , tasty and succulent chicken breast. This was our first visit here but it certainly won’t be our last.

A very nice country pub with a welcoming landlord and a nice selection of beers. The food was very good and it was nice to see a specials board which you don’t see often these days. I had the home made scotch egg to start which was great, piping hot and humongous. After filling up on the starter I struggled to finish my main which was chicken millenese from the specials board. A giant chicken breast flattened and coated in panko breadcrumbs topped with prosciutto and cheese. This came with a creamy home made coleslaw and thick cut chips. Food looked good visually and tasted great. I would return here and recommend to others.

This pub is definitely one to avoid. The menu is shallow,to say the least. We ordered the Fish & Chips, which took about an hour to arrive. It was quite plain to see that the fish was out of a packet & was dripping in grease. The chips, all 9 of them came in a small enameled cup. Upon biting into one I had a mouth full of cooking fat. It was disgusting. The owner/manager was completely uninterested and had a manner that was nothing more than arrogant. Avoid this venue at all costs.

Visited for the second time, this time to eat an evening meal. Staff very welcoming on arrival, menu was excellent and well priced. Food came out hot and tasty and tasted as good as it looked, We both had starters and mains which were cooked to perfection. Staff were attentive but not over the top. Dogs are very welcome and accommodated for. Will defiantly visit again when in the area. The landlord should be very proud of his staff and the establishment.

Today was a double celebration for us, and we couldn't have picked a better place to enjoy the day! Staff very welcoming, even took photos of us after failing at selfie!! Food was delicious and came out timely, not rushed and also piping hot. Thoroughly recommend. Thank you Andy and crew x

Visited as a group of 12 for Saturday lunch and we had the most fantastic lunch. Andy was so attentive and the food was fab. Lovely setting too- really cosy pub and would recommend a visit!!!

We booked a table for 12 at The Black Horse Cherhill for Fathers Day . Well what can I say the food was outstanding service brilliant and nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely go back again to try the other menus.

Another superb Sunday lunchtime, food and service second to none, between the seven of us we had roast beef and roast pork selections all superb and the crackling was to die for, service is seamless can’t wait to revisit, we’ll done guys.

Haven't been to Black Horse for a while, but really pleased we did, service and food was excellent, l am informed the home made scotch egg was to die for, pies were proper pies top & bottom, and told was very good, the hunters chicken was good. Service was attentive and cheerful, good value for money, will definitely be going back again

14 of us from our local u3a had lunch here. From the planning stage to the meal itself, Andy and his team couldn't have been more helpful. All our meals were delicious, the service was excellent and everyone was happy. Well done and thank you!

We pass this pub regularly and have meant to try it for some time. We had a very warm welcome this evening. The pub is very cosy and the food is lovely. Hubby and I both had the homemade steak and ale pie, which came with a choice of chips and peas or mash and veg. It's hard to find a proper pie these days with most places offering filling in a dish with a pastry top. The Black Horse offers a proper pie, fresh, tasty and very filling accompanied by a good amount of mash, carrots, brocoli and red cabbage. We had a gravy boat each which I preferred to having a meal brought out with gravy already on it. The apple crumble and ice cream that followed was also homemade and delicious and just the right amount. Great food at reasonable prices, coupled with great service by very friendly staff makes the Black Horse hard to beat. My only negative comment would be that the path that leads from the rear car park to the front of the pub is very dark. Some lights out there would be really helpful. We will definately be back!

Just had an amazing meal at this pub. Steak is the best I’ve had out and it’s cheaper than others places. £19 for a sirloin with all the trimmings, spot on

We went in last week ... We thought we would play it safe and only order a small glass of wine, a beer, and bowl of chips ... Yes.... just a bowl of chips ... firstly we were told that there would be half and hour wait ( yes just for chips ) .. then we were served our drinks in dirty glasses, and shown to sit at a table that hadn’t be cleaned in 3 years ...Then to add insult to injury , they wanted £16.00 for just one bowl of chips , small red wine and one beer . Also to add,the chips had been microwaved and were disgusting. The pot of mayonnaise, looked like something I would not like to describe. Why can’t these local pubs/restaurants offer clean fresh food and create an atmosphere??? The landlord should go back to doing what he does best ( working on the dustcart ) Appalling beyond belief. Big tip ... Swerve this place, carry on down into Calne and go to the Devine Cafe .

We took my father out for dinner to celebrate his birthday, and wish we hadn't bothered. The food was burnt and disgusting, they ran out of red wine (in a pub?!) and then when we complained the manager was rude to us and threatened to call the police. Terrible attitude and terrible food. Save your money and go elsewhere.

This is a very pleasant newly refurbished pub on the main road to Calne..it has not established a cosy atmosphere yet ..neat and clean pleasant staff .dogs welcome I did not eat there .there s a chalk horse into the hill side and a monument a short distance away ..pleasant to stop while traveling this area..

We popped into The Black Horse for a quick drink. My partner enjoyed a pint of a lighter Czech beer and I had an orange juice and lemonade. The service was friendly and quick. I can’t really say much more about the place as we sat outside and enjoyed the sunshine. A good stop off after a walk to the obelisk and white horse.

We'd been meaning to visit this pub for a while, due to a burst water pipe in the kitchen of our intended destination we decided on The Black Horse. I am grateful the plumber was late!Cheerful friendly bar staff - single handed - serving bar and food.The food - gammon steaks - was excellent in both taste and portion. I would say almost too much but I wasn't going to waste any!Nice friendly atmosphere, relaxed. Also dog friendly - nice to see.As some Austrian said - "I'll be back".

Staff - mostly civil rather than warm or friendly or welcoming, or even really polite, friendly staff, except one who smiled warmly.

We called in 'on spec' as a group of four. Harriet was alone balancing the work for both the bar and the restaurant, and held the fort brilliantly till help arrived. Very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble and her friendly manner was very appealing.

First visit since it's facelift and a real pleasure to visit and have a meal. Excellent meal, friendly helpful staff who make you feel welcome from the minute you step inside and nothing is too much trouble..Harriet our waitress is like a breath of fresh air...friendly, bubbly and chatty and will change anything on the menu to suit your requirements...a real pleasure and we will definately be visiting more often and very deserving of the 5 star rating......

Bar staff friendly, but menu very poor...hardly any choice. Too many over-cooked oven chips. Side salad consisted of rocket and salad leaves; no other salad ingredients. Many people want ordinary menu i.e. with cottage pie; scampi; steak and kidney pie; chicken; fish dishes etc. plus a children's menu. No choice on this menu whatsoever for over 60's.

Visited here for the first time with friends and can highly recommend.

I would give this place an award for the worst steak I've ever eaten....it come out and looked as if it had been run over by a train repeatedly - it was that flat! I asked for it medium it come out like it had been cremated. I was meant to get portobello mushroom with it and seem to have got a button mushroom..the list goes on and to pay around £20 for a steak you expect something decent!! This wasn't just my meal either we had a table of 12 and I don't think one person will return to this place. Please avoid

Have been here a few times for food. First was the roast dinner which was beautiful presented and cooked. The second time had the sharer which was a very large portion and once again delicious. Definitely would recommend

I called in on the 29th july for a drink and found the staff very friendly and efficiant! I decided to eat and ordered a steak.This came out shortly and was cooked to perfection i ordered it rare and it was perfect,tasty and juicy.I would h8ghly tecomend this place and will certainly return!

I have travelled around over the years to find the best pub I could find , and I think for now this place is it . The food was fantastic , The atmosphere incredible , and the locals seem very welcoming . First off I have to say from the moment I stepped foot in the doors I knew that it was going to be ok here , A great smile by the bar staff , and even though they were busy , didn't keep me waiting and I opted for the Blood Orange Gin . Never had that before and it was lovely . I asked for a menu and there was plenty to choose from without being too much . I had starter main and dessert . All tasted fantastic . Compliments to the Chef . The Steak was perfection , And I am going to negotiate next time I pop in ( which will be regular now ) to purchase some puds to take away . As for the atmosphere and the staff , nothing here is false , I stayed around after the meal and got talking with a lot of people , Staff and locals and they are all so nice . I am coming back soon to be part of a great bunch . Thank you so much for one of the best nights out I have had .

Awesome as always, food and drink to a high standard. I stay here in my motor home when in business in Devises, yesterday’s poor reviews were caused i think by an exceptionally busy day due to a local event which was unexpected by the staff. Being ex catering I can symapathise, sometimes you get hammered unexpectedly and unfortunately quality can suffer due to the huge extra stress the staff are under.

We arrived yesterday after a long day at the bike meet in Calne, tired, hot and hungry we were hoping they could fit us in to which when we arrived looked like they wouldn’t be able to due to how busy it was, the staff managed to put some tables together and fit our party of 6 in for dinner. The atmosphere was so welcoming and lively, the 2 ladies behind the bar were extremely polite and couldn’t of done more for us. Understanding it was busy we thought there would be a wait for our food, the starters came out very sharpish and were absolutely delicious, we shared the fish goujons, tempura veg, and the chicken strips, which clearly were all homemade and not premade. Followed by our mains very quickly I could not recommend the food enough. Unfortunately a table in the restaurant felt necessary to make the staffs life difficult for what seemed no reason at all. If you want homely food, friendly staff and a great atmosphere for a drink or food I would highly recommend this place!

We booked in to the Black Horse as we have previously been here on many family celebrations.

A group of 12 of us visited here for a family get together. When ordering, were told that some of the main options on the menu were unavailable. Waited nearly an hour for starters to arrive. They then came in dribs and drabs so we couldn't eat together. Mains were another lengthy wait. They came out a couple at a time, then some came without the sides they were supposed to have. Food was terrible. Each chicken dish was beyond over cooked and rock hard, steaks were flattened and overdone, fish pasta dish was in a pool of lemon and garlic butter and the hunters chicken resembled nothing I've quite seen before! Complained to owner who said she would take various meals off the bill and go and kick the s**t out of the chef. We then had another lengthy wait for the bill. Would definitely not recommend!

My family and I have recently enjoyed our evening here. It was a flawless service from start to finish. A lovely warm welcome upon arrival from staff and my steak was top class. We haven’t enjoyed a meal like the one we have just experienced in a very long while. The appetisers we had at the start were completely unexpected and a very pleasant surprise. Good touch. I would highly recommend eating here

Visited this pub recently with a group of friends . The food was amazing. I had the burger, it was one of the best burgers I’ve had. It was succulent and juicy. And the onion rings were amazing! The owners for lovely and friendly . Would definitely go back there again.

Went here for lunch today with family and was very disappointed with the food. There was a roast dinner on the menu which we were all looking forward to but there was only one choice of meat - beef. It was very rare and tough and the vegetables were not very nice, dry and I think they must have been cooked for some time and reheated. Also two of us had coffee and it was served in a cup with no saucer! We will not be returning to this pub again.

Been here before on numerous occasions and always had great food and service, but that seems to be a thing of the past.

Please take no notice of the website for this pub. We went there after looking at the evening menu and liking what we read.

We visited last Saturday evening for my boyfriends mums birthday, there was a group of 12 of us and there was nothing that went right with our whole evening.

We came in the evening but equally suited and located for anyone visiting The Cherhill White Horse, Lansdowne Monument, Silbury Hill, Avebury or hunting down Crop Circles! Friendly and helpful staff - could have done with an extra pair of hands - on a busy evening and good fare. It seems popular with the locals and dog walkers too. Will return...

I have been here twice over the last few weeks, once for my mums birthday and had such a wonderful time we came back with a huge group of friends for my partners godsons 1st birthday party.

We visited the monument and White Horse on the Downs to lay a bunch of flowers as remembrance to our parents and a recently departed nephew. We came back down and had an excellent meal before we walked around the village where I was born nearly 75 years ago.
