The Black Horse in Vale of White Horse

This place is an amazing place for food and drink. The food and service has been excellent the last twice we have been. Such good value for money and the generosity of the portions are really above the amount you get at other establishments of this type. Would recommend you to try this place, you will not be disappointed. The staff are so friendly and helpful.

Very strange experience. Went for a drink with two friends. Clearly under new management. Facilities were nice. But 1 member of staff there was surreal. Raised his eyebrow and questioned our drinks order every step of the way. It took over 15 mins to get 3 simple drinks. Almost left but chose location as best place to meet up with friends. Hadn't realised there was another pub in village or we would have left. He assured us he had gas and electricity and clean glasses. The glasses were not clear. I don't know if server was high or drunk or ill but we opted to sit in car and catch up rather than get a second drink.

Beautiful public house, serves no food because they have no gas! Does not state any of this on their website. However the pub is up for lease and temporary manager is in situ. We had a very odd experience. Not likely to revisit any time soon.

We had late Sunday lunch, 5 adults, 4 dogs. Very dog friendly, and they in turn are well behaved. Under the table and we don't feed from the table. Lovely owners who took time to talk to us and pet the dogs. We all had roasts - lovely. Not particularly cheap@£16, but good quality and plentiful. We had a dog walk, and returned for the evening pub quiz. Didn't do particularly well, but enjoyed it. we'll be back! This was a return visit for us, have previously had a regular lunch here - again very good.

My Partner and I were driving home from a busy day when we came across ‘The ‘Black Horse’ what an amazing village pub. We were greeted by a very smiley and lovely young lady called Amy/Aimee (Not sure how she spells her name) She sat us a table promptly and took our drinks order and the proceeded to hand us menus and advised us on what was available and not available. We asked her what was popular and what she would recommend. She absolutely smashed it with the burgers that myself and James chose. Best tasting burger we’ve had yet. We are so pleased we stopped and didn’t go home for a usual takeout. Thank you so much to the chef for an amazing burger and an ever BIGGER thank you to you Amy/Aimee. We felt so welcome and appreciated. Can’t wait to come back.

Wow! Myself and partner happened to be driving from hull to Oxford to visit family and decided to explore countryside and village pubs for drinks and food. This is by far the best service and food we have had yet! The young lady with wavey hair was brilliant, She was so welcoming and smiley. The pub was very busy and had a lot of people already eating and drinking but she didn’t seem to stop to attend everyones needs. Constantly rushing around and making sure everything was running smoothly! The burgers well, ABSOLUTELY to die for! Best burger I’ve had in a LONG time! I honestly can not wait to come back and eat here again. Thank you for brilliant service and food! Myself and my partner will definitely be visiting again.

Came with a friend for a Sunday roast a couple of weeks back and can honestly say it's the best roast dinner I've had out in a very long time. Beats any other Sunday roast in the area by miles. The cauliflower cheese is *chef's kiss*. I plan to return with my family soon!

What an amazing afternoon/evening we have spent at The Black Horse today. The food was incredible and the only thing to outshine that was the service from the staff. They were so kind and accommodating for our big group. They brought over toys for the two children to play with and even offered to hold the youngest baby so his mum could eat. There was nothing too awkward for them and they really wade us all feel welcome.

I recently inquired about having a party for a large group of friends and family for my 50th celebrations. Laura was absolutely brilliant and arranged everything for me and even booked a DJ for the evening who was brilliant. It was a fantastic event, so well done. Excellent pub garden which is perfect for private functions. Staff super friendly, food absolutely banging. Would highly recommend. So fortunate to have such great pub on my doorstep!

Had a most delicious Sunday roast dinner with my family today. Two of our party had the roast beef and two of us has the vegetable pastry. The portions were very generous and everything was well presented. Will definitely visit here again.

We came on Thursday (31st August) for an unplanned meal. It was ‘Burger Night’ WOW!!!!! Absolutely AMAZING!!! Best burgers we’ve ever had! Myself and mother in law are vegetarians and by far the tastiest veggie burger we’ve ever eaten! We can’t wait to come back! 😍😍😋😋😋

Burger night was a huge success & not only for BOGOF. Portion sizes were huge, food was fantastic. Staff were attentive & went above & beyond. Couldn't fault anything. So lucky to have this little Gem of a pub in the village.

Went for BOGOF Burger night, amazing food brilliant service, landlord super friendly. Dog friendly is a huge bonus. Set in a beautiful village. Definitely be going back.

One of my favourite places to meet friends with children. The pub garden, with its climbing frame, grassy space and stage area, is a perfect space to let little ones play whilst adults can stay seated! Delicious coffee and cakes in the daytime, and friendly, welcoming staff.

Great meal had by the family at the Black Horse, the staff were amazing in these trying times and the new menu is fantastic. The veggie options are among the best I have seen around Oxfordshire. Will happily be going again and the garden was perfect for kids.

Having seen the pub prior to the latest refurb I was truly delighted to see how much the place has been transformed. I went with my partner for dinner just before Christmas I had the fish and chips and my partner had the surf turf and cluck both were delicious the batter on the fish light and crispy and my partner cleaned his plate! The customer service was spot on and the staff really do make it a lovely experience! I will definitely be returning as soon as we are allowed.

I have visited the Black horse a few times now since they have changed over. Every meal me and my partner have had has been amazing and the staff are so friendly and helpful. I recommend the pie, it was delicious.

Our first visit after new management and a complete refurbishment - totally transformed! It is now relaxed, friendly and looks wonderful. We had a really delicious baked camembert and will certainly return once the lockdown is over.

We went here for Sunday lunch as a family of nine including two toddlers. The service was efficient, despite the restaurant being full, and the food was excellent. The staff couldn't have been more friendly. It was a little on the expensive side but then this was Thame.

Not the first time we've been to this pub but each time the staff and service is impeccable. The food and atmosphere is fantastic, with the pub itself being extremely cosy. I didnt get her name but our waitress, a young blonde with plaits was extremely lovely, patient and professional considering our family likes to be a little naughty. To top the day off we had a few games of pool and darts which was a welcome and fun discovery. Overall i would recommend this place to anyone within the area and we will be 100% returning for further meals. Thank you for the outstanding service!

We called in at 8.45pm on a Saturday night and managed to get food served. It was nothing special ( usual cold chill chain pub food) but the staff were great in providing at last minute.The pub was very busy with 20-30 year olds who were worse for wear. The mens toilets was very busy. This probably needs checking out!!! Drugs seem to be everywhere nowadays but I not a fan.

Having a performance with a choir this was a good place to stay near the old city centre. Its a pub so no troubles having your beer in the evening with ususal suspects around you talking too much. The rooms are simple but acceptable. Old style but this is Oxford too

Sought out this pub on one our regular breaks to the area because it happened to be the local village pub of one of my friend's parents.The landlady couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome. Very friendly and she made us lunch herself - delicious sandwiches with sides of chips and salad. The ploughman's lunch that one of our party had was amazing.The pub is also dog friendly meaning we could bring ours in with us while we had our lunch; we also met the resident dog, Elf, who was a lovely, waggy Labrador.So nice to visit a pub of this nature; at one or two other pubs I've experienced lately, the staff have mostly been inept, bored or charmless.

Went here Sunday 13th April with all the family to celebrate my special birthday. My husband went down early in the morning and took balloons and banners and the staff very kindly decorated around our tables which was a surprise when we arrived. We all had the roasts and they did say there was chicken for the grandchildren which was lovely as when we booked they said there wasn’t chicken on the menu.. we asked for extra vegetables when we booked and they done a very good selection of lovely fresh vegetables which we all enjoyed. They made us feel very welcome and looked after us all very well nothing was too much trouble and it made my day very special. Thanks very much we will be back soon. The young girls that served us were lovely and friendly. The lunch is very reasonably priced

Went here for mother’s day -what a welcome we had. Made to feel very welcome straight away. My daughter in law and I were offered a complimentary glass of perseco as it was mother’s day which was nice. We all had the roast but different meats and the roast potatoes were lovely and crispy and the vegetables cooked just right. Nothing was too much trouble for them as my granddaughter asked for extra Yorkshire pud and they quickly got here one. We couldn’t decide on the puds so we all had different one and shared them. Excellent value for money. We will be back soon I hope

We were tired after a day with grandchildren and almost staggered into here. A very warm welcome and our starters (fried whitebait and pate) were very good. Too tired to remember what else we had.... would visit again.

La única cosa buena que puedo decir es que el aparcamiento está bien. Fui la última noche esperando el menú que estaba en el sitio web. En vez de eso nos dieron la tercera comida de primera clase y un servicio! Sólo dos menú de entre cuatro y estropeado las comidas eran casi incomible. Creo que el puré era mezclado con pasta de papel. Puedo decir que nunca he tenido una comida tan mala. Nos dijeron en el frente de la casa que estaban fuera de sus pies apresurados con diners contamos unos 10 cubre incluyendo nuestro grupo, no me gustaría que el servicio si estaba muy concurrido. El diseño del bar es tal que es casi imposible llegar a ella, incluso con unas pocas. Yo sólo he dado una estrella y eso era demasiado.

Llegamos a la BH justo después de 13 años. 00, detrás de otros "grupos" con almuerzo. Como la última vez que estuvimos en tuvimos un poco de espera para nuestra comida, pero cuando llegó era de primera clase. Realmente la comida caliente, se sirve en platos calientes, perfectamente cocinada y bien presentado. No se puede pedir mucho más que eso un martes mediodía puede? Excelente local de salchichas Dews Meadow, improbable el bacalao era local, pero sabroso. Las fichas adecuadas todos disfrutaron y les ordenaron que - bien caliente, corteza crujiente y centros esponjosas.

I called in today for a sandwich lunch

Sadly, the Black Horse seems to be going downhill. It's a real shame as it has been great until recently. I hope that it will recover. Had a family meal there on Saturday night. We phoned to book and were told that although we couldn't have the time we requested, as there was another booking at that time, we could have a booking for half an hour earlier - as long as we were punctual. No problem with that. But having arrived on time, by 20 minutes later we still had not received any menus. Two of our party ordered the same thing and we were told that was OK as they had just two portions left of that. Another 20 minutes later, they said that actually they only had one portion. So I ordered a different choice. What eventually arrived was rather different from what I was expecting (fish was in batter, not in sauce, potatoes were chips not dauphinoise, samphire had become pea shoots), but hey, misunderstandings happen. Overall though, it was disappointing. We've enjoyed many evenings here in the past, but this seemed quite dull. It was not busy, the food was OKish, but the service and whole experience were rather mediocre. C'mon guys, I know you can do better than this.

Celebrated the New Year at the Black Horse with friends and had a great evening. Set menu of either beef or chicken was very good. Staff were excellent and pub had a great ambience. The only thing that prevents me giving it five stars was that this was the only pub in my 50 years of drinking alcohol that had virtually no whisky. Could not believe it !. After a search the staff managed to find enough whisky to offer me a single measure !

Visited on a Sunday afternoon at 4.30 we wanted something to eat but we're told they stopped serving at 4. However, they very kindly made us fish and chips and a plate of chips. The food was good and the young lady on the bar and serving was excellent. Two very grateful customers.

We had just had a great day at Williams F1 and our hotel (La Fontana) did not do meals on Sunday evening so were looking for an evening meal close by. Unfortunately this pub stops serving at 16:00 Sundays. Nevertheless they helped us out by providing fish and chips at 14:30. The drinks were good and food good value. It was nice for us Northerners to see a Cumbrian brew (Jennings Bitter) behind the bar.

We searched for a pub on the internet where we could meet friends half way in the Cotswolds where they are staying down from Yorkshire. We were travelling from Hampshire. Unfortunately when we arrived we were told the chef was ill. They were very apologetic and some meals were not available. In the end we decided on sandwiches. We all decided on B.L.T which were lovely accompanied by thick delicious chips. One person decided on the last lemon posset for which they did not charge and they must have overhead us talking about our friends birthday she was celebrating. They then brought out a cake with candles and sang Happy Birthday.They were so friendly attentive and apologetic that what could have been remembering the pub for the wrong reasons turned out to be a lovely lunchtime

Initially we went to the Black Horse for lunch with 3 friends. The menu is very tempting and difficult to make a choice. All five of us were very pleased with our choices. Every plate was a picture and the flavours were excellent with suble combinations.We were so impressed that we booked a table for that evening as our niece was visiting. We were not disappointed, the food from the dinner menu was brilliant.Stuart and Patrick are fantastic hosts and the pub has a great atmosphere whether your visit is for the lovely beers or sampling the sublime food.A Gastro pub of the highest quality in every aspect.

I visited the Black Horse a month or so ago and the food I had was amazing, better than a number of Michelin star restaurants I've visited in the past. I would recommend this place to everyone. I'll be heading back very regularly!

Great village pub for food and also good if you want to meet friends for drinks. A true village pub with an excellent seasonal menu. You cannot get a better value lunchtime menu - 2 courses for £17. It's worth noting that this is off their normal menu for this price and not 'cheap options'. Truly delicious. Plenty of friendly locals and also the owners are great and very welcoming. Highly recommend a visit, lunchtime or evening and one to return to!

Drinking a beer and deciding: Lets eat here! I have eaten in several Michelin star restaurants and this pub certainly deserves a recommandation (perhaps a bib). Well made plates, very flavours and truly wonderful combined flavours. And as a Dutch I can say: the price is more than right. Really a true discovery. !!!
