Came into today for a couple of drinks and stayed for homemade pies. We ordered a game pie, when it arrived I thought it was beef and reported to the staff as my partner doesn’t eat beef. The staff were lovely and double checked, it was in fact the game pie, and I assume it was the owner who came and checked for us. He was very friendly and happily spoke to us about the food and reassured us, explaining almost all the food is homemade on site so they can be sure about their ingredients. Even though I had been wrong about the pie, we were offered a free glass of wine/pint each which really was above any customer service you could reasonably expect. Very obvious the owner takes pride in his establishment and cares about customer opinion. Just wanted to review to say thank you and advise others of the high level of service and customer care at this pub. Will return in future. Additionally the lush garden and traditional bar are absolutely beautiful and a real sun trap well into the evening. Drinks very reasonably priced and the sauvignon blanc I had was very drinkable.

Very relaxed atmosphere, if you like to meet friends or family and have a bite to eat then this is the place to go

Excellent little pub, slightly out of the way but that's a blessing really given how it gets in town centres sometimes. Always a good selection of beers on and, ever so rarely in England, there's an Irish whiskey besides Jameson's or Bushmills on the shelf (though not always, unless I'm mistaken).

The service from staff was excellent and how they delt with the awfull comments of discrimination to disabilities to children with needs,as I was sat with my neice who’s brother is serverly disabled we felt intimidated by it.one other of the customers jumped up and said something to him trying to escalate it I feel the staff was very atentive and shut the situation down pretty well many thanks to them

Took two friends mid 2023. We had burger - not impressed and tasteless and two seafood dishes which obviously came from freezer to microwave as icy bits. Obviously teenager in kitchen little idea. Complained and got unhelpful response. Not eaten there since.

Thought this would be a little gem that served home made old fashioned good food. Only absolutely nothing was home made.plus the food was greasy and tasteless.not cheap either. Never again.

This is probably my local although I'm not a regular but when I do go it is always a pleasure (I'm not much of a drinker/pub goer these days). Staff really friendly, food decent pub fare especially the pies. Good choice of beer...it is a CAMRA pub after all. Fantastic beer garden for warmer days and excellent for sport particularly the rugby as it is very much a rugby pub. Would suggest booking if you want a table on a 6 nations weekend. Can get busy when the sport is on as only a small, old and traditional pub so my advice is get there early if you haven't reserved a spot. Understand there is a private room upstairs not that I've been in there.

Was recommended this pub whilst investigating my ancestry in Hertford and I have to say what a lovely pub it is too...staff really friendly and welcoming, a warm atmosphere. Will be back during my next visit to Hertford. Would give you 10 stars

Served by a very friendly woman who made you feel extremely welcome from the moment you walked in. Had the Sunday roast which was very tasty. The veg was even good which often goes amiss on a Sunday roast!

What a fab night thank you The Black Horse for a lovely 2 course meal plus catering for the England match in the hide away venue room up stairs. Think we might have been a bit roudy what with the other quiet lads on the separate party table. Plus pinning the ring on the donkey game. Staff were fab and food was very yummy - nice large portion of good pub grub at affordable prices. Would highly recommend as good ales etc cheers Roz and the Enfield gang

Great pub, and the only one in the Hertford/ Ware area where you can guarentee rugby will be on (it does class itself as a rugby pub). The main pub has a quaint, traditional feel (exposed beams/ traditional pub tables and bar etc) and then there is an extension out the back which has a newer, more modern feel. Garden area is also nice during the summer. Good selection of ales on offer and the food is nice (although in fairness i have only ever had the black horse burger, which i go for every time im there). Keep wanting to try the homemade game pie which looks great but ive bottled it everytime to stick with what i know :)

THE BEST. Hate to say it but it was my first time eating here this summer, why!! Food was amazing, garden is gorgeous and a hidden gem. Such a genuinely lovely pub run by the best people. If you’re close, definitely stop by :)

Good pub. About 6-10 minutes from the town centre, Separated from the middle of Hertford by the dual carriageway (a miserable and devastating four lanes that only the most deranged car fanatics could ever have thought was a good idea to build) that bisects the town. Nice ales at reasonable prices. Pleasant staff.

Lovely little pub with really laid back vibe, my second time here now and i enjoyed both times. Today I got a lovely fresh made omelette with salad and a refreshing pint of soft drink on tap for under a tenner which felt like a bargain tbh. The garden is lovely to sit in with your dog with lots of tucked away tables and beautiful flowers. Also a small play area for kids.

lovely pub (best in Hertford, dare I say?), with a great selection of cask. Brilliant garden, was just what we needed after a long day of cycling. Welcoming hosts, and delicious looking food! I wasn't hungry enough to sample it today, but on a future visit will definitely be tasting. Bravo!

Thankfully I didn't read any of the worrying reviews about the burgers (read them just after I ordered) because mine was delicious. I just went for the basic burger with cheese. It came with chunky chips, coleslaw and a side salad. Salad was fresh, and the burger was cooked medium to well and not too thick. My partner had an omelette, also well cooked. Perhaps they've acquired new cooks? The young waiting staff were attentive and cheerful, even though perhaps just learning on the job.

Just moved out to Hertford and went here for lunch, really friendly staff and all the food was home cooked just like mum makes 🍲 lovely pub 👍👍

Good atmosphere, rugby games shown, meet dish was very good, fried fish platter not so.

Summer review: Walked in with two primary aged children and a big dog. Great service, generous sized drinks. There are some steps in to the garden but manageable for children. Kids play area is a decent sized Astro turf with large netting, so bring your own toys for creative or sporting play to suit your kids. My kids where delighted. Dog was also happy with the multiply drinks bowls available. Winter review: Pop in for a quick quiet meal on a Thursday night and am very impressed with the experience. Excellent curry and 0% beer. Great staff, excellent atmosphere, sky football quietly on in the background. Will be back to try their other non alcohol options soon.

Excellent family meal. The ‘Black Horse’ burger was to die for. The Curry smelt amazing and they serve the best perfect chips. Compliments to the Chef, Well Played!

We came on a Sunday for some good honest pub grub sitting outside in the garden before the match. We had Scampi, chips and mushy peas and a chicken burger with chips. Both were absolutely delicious, perfect chips, well cooked scampi, massive slices of succulent chicken breast and a little side crisp salad with coleslaw. Simple pub food but done absolutely excellently. The service was friendly and efficient, Debbie was welcoming and friendly as always.

Had a wedding reception here and it was lovely, nice little play area for the kids and a grass seated area for the adults (as well as an indoor reception room). The staff made the evening amazing and i dont think anybody didnt a have a drink in there hand at any point. The staff were truely amazing and took it all within their stide even ensuring that the kids always had a caprisun or juice. Was amazing and couldnt praise enough.

Thank you so much to everyone at the Black Horse for giving us the perfect wedding reception. All the staff were friendly, service was great and the Summer BBQ buffet was enjoyed by everyone! Highly recommend the Black Horse for anyone looking to host an event.

Went here after running a marathon on Sunday. We had a table booked, it was all ready for us when we arrived, they brought us water and were very attentive with prompt and polite table service

Lovely Pub but not excatly covid secure ☹☹

We went for a walk on Cole green way and stopped for a lovely hot chocolate and coffee. We asked for a biscuit for our four year old and although they didn’t have one a lovely lady went and got us the last slice of carrot cake she had reserved for herself. Very lovely service, food and drink.

Nice pub but Sunday roast dinner was very bland, will not be back to eat. The new extension lacks atmosphere.

Poor service, moved from one place to another. No menus given, told to look online at roast dinners. Then charged more for meal than online menu To top it off, as I was finishing my meal found a small black hair ony.plate Was not charged for a bowl of roast potatoes as way of apology Never again! Was recommended to me by a friend, must have just chosen a bad day but never again! Wouldn't normally ever dream if giving a bad review, but that was shocking! Just wasted £17! Feel quite sick now too, physically Update- To respond to your reply You have made a mistake! I didnt ask to be moved at all, your staff moved myself and the young person I was with! And you supplied some extra potatoes when I explained the young person was dairy free (which was very nice of you) I expected to pay extra for this and explained so! The hair was hidden behind the Yorkshire pudding on my plate and yes I had almost finished my meal, but when I attempted to eat the Yorkshire, I noticed the hair and explained I couldnt eat anymore of the meal I found staff and owner to be defensive although apologetic! I felt sick due to eating before finding this small black hair on my plate! I so wish I had found it at the begining of my meal! I do not have short black hair myself, neither does the young person I was with, however your waitress (I noticed) did have black hair! To conclude, these things do happen, but, i didnt like the way i was treated over this incident! Also, meal was more expensive than online prices. No menu with updated price list was supplied (wasnt available) at sitting I fully appreciate you do not need bad reviews from your customers, but I would urge you look at how you treat people, because, if I felt I was valued, hair or no hair, I would never have dreamed of leaving a bad review! A great friendly traditional local that serves a good selection of ales. The menu is also varied and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit if you are in the area and you will receive a warm welcome.

A Hidden gem, with brilliant staff!

Get the pie or don't eat here. I booked in advance but they put us in the garden although it was cold. They did then agree to move us when we asked. The tiny room we were put in was horrible. Food choice looked good and my pie was nice (lots of meat) but the mushroom stroganoff came without the mash we ordered. When we said this they said we couldn't have it and instead offered pasta, so we said yes to pasta. The pasta arrived still uncooked and crunchy so we sent it back and it came back microwaved, so still crunchy and uncooked. The burgers were disgusting and the mushy peas that we asked for were just normal garden peas. The bar man apologised and gave us the veggie meal for free (it hadn't been eaten) but the cook was clearly terrible. Pizza was advertised outside the pub and in website but they said they weren't doing pizza or Sunday roasts.

With Covid restrictions in place we had to book a tabke in advance, which is fair enough. Nice beer and food, friendly staff, garden seating, and a few TVs to watch a game when on.

Simple pub grub but really well done. Staff pleasant and efficient. Whole experience geared to safety. Well done to all.

Great pub as they used to be. Clearly popular with locals who were chatting and doing crossword together! But friendly to strangers too. Wide choice of beers. Landlady behind the bar opened a tab while we chose food. Excellent fresh sandwiches on soft wholemeal bread. Good value and a great experience.

My favourite pub,friendly local with excellent food and great atmosphere. Very good menu with plenty of choice and happy to serve small plates of the excellent roast dinners. Dog friendly which I really like. Can’t ask for anything more.

I have been many times and love the good old fashioned local pub. Wednesday nights now offer wood fired pizza and drink for £10.00 excellent value and tasty pizza. Also love Sunday lunch small plates on offer which for me is great. All fresh vegetables home made yorkshire excellent. Friendly staff and dog friendly. New restaurant upstairs looks lovely and look forward to going soon.

Food mixed, no vegan option. Not what I'd hoped for. Some good ales & homemade pies. Dog smell a bit too strong for my liking.
