The Black Fox in Bath and North East Somerset

I was charged £7.75 for a pint of poorly kept, flat bitter and a packet of crisps. That's ridiculous. There are many decent pubs nearby selling far better quality beer at lower prices.

If you like craft ales and lager...this should be our go to pub

Staff are amazing! Mark, Alex, Basia, Viki, Marie, Jake and Dylan, absolutely awesome, so friendly, has rapidly become a place of comfort. They always lift spirits and go above and beyond their roles as staff

A beautiful hotel, well maintained, above a really neat pub. The room was small and simple but clean and well taken care of. The location is great, very central. The breakfast was fantastic as was the gin and tonic and the Cornish stout!

This hotel is in the midst of everything from historical to shopping and many local entries with a wide variety of food selections. Check in was very friendly and fast. Staff was very attentive and provided great instructions for getting to our room. On the negative side of stairs present a problem. Then this hotel will not get your 5 star review. We had no problem accessing our room via 3 flights of narrow stairwells. Excellent location for the sightseeing genre of traveler.

I chose the Black Fox for lunch because it described itself as a Free House and a seller of Real Ale. I was footsore and tired after walking round the city and didn't want to walk any further so I took a chance. The menu looked OK but they only had one beer on pump that day which was disappointing and very surprising but I figured it would be a decent pint in such an establishment. It was not. The beer - called Racing Pigeons - was cloudy but that didn't worry me too much, some beers are. But the taste was fruity, like a soft drink, and didn't taste like beer at all. A Free House should be offering a range of real ales and I daresay they normally do but if, for some bizarre reason, they only have one it should be a way better one than this. It wasn't cheap, either, at £5.75. My steak and ale pie came with peas and either chips or mash and I chose chips (£17). It was served on a plate with a raised edge, more like a flat-bottomed bowl than a plate, and drenched in gravy. This would not have been so bad if I'd asked for mash - although I hate gravy sloshed over everything - but it made the chips soggy and the peas were almost floating. The steak was good and plenty of it but the pastry was too thick and somehow both dry and doughy. I finished neither my meal nor my pint. The service was less than friendly, too. When I arrived there was only one table occupied and no-one else came in the entire time I was there. Hardly surprising, and I wish I'd read the reviews and passed this place by.

Did what a pub needed to do. It was a busy Saturday but we got what we needed. The staff was focused and efficient. The beer selection was good.

The staff is so friendly and helpful. They dragged my vert heavy suitcase up the stairs on arrival and downstairs on departure. The breakfast was amazing, really loved having so much choice and that it is made fresh. I did eat one evening in the pub as well and that was very delicious as well. Location is very good, close to the train station, busstop in front and you walk straight into the city centre when coming out off the door. Room was pretty old and could use some painting and thorough cleaning. It was having everything you would need plus some little extras. The shower is low, I am 173cm and I was bumping my head at the shower head. I also would have loved more space on the desk for working, darker curtains because there are big spotlights outside and some light above the bathroommirror. I would definitely rent a room again, but if I travel with my boyfriend I would not go here, because he could not have a shower here😅.

Lovely rooms which are small but have superb bathrooms and are well equipped . The breakfasts are very good and the pub has a great selection of craft beers . With its reasonable price and great location it gives great value for money . The only minus point is your next to a semi main road which can get busy .

Perfect place to stay for two nights away, affordable prices, walking distance from all the shops and restaurants. Clean rooms and great breakfasts. Highly recommend

Very pleasant pub with a good selection of beers, but it's real speciality is local gins. I most recently visited at the end of an evening and we decided to have a whisky. They had a surprisingly good Cotswold whisky.

Pub was great, food ok but limited choice. Good range of local beer and gin. Room was average but opposite very bright street lights and buses quite late at night. Bathroom had smallest basin ever!!! V comfy bed and breakfast v tasty.

Great location, nice little bar and decent beer selection. Food is a bit hit and miss, and the place always stinks. I can't work out if fish being cooked (worrying if it smells like that) or it's the toilets. A bit off-putting

Ok, firstly the good points. Good central location. We stayed for one night. The room was small but comfortable . The other thing we really liked were the quality toiletries (i think they were Bramley). The wifi was pretty good. Keep in mind , there is no onsite parking. We parked in the multi story carpark (Southgate), approximately 8 min walk, generally flat terrain. We paid about 18 pound for overnight. Now for the not so good. Although breakfast was included, it was pretty average. The menu was limited and the food on offer was cold and bland. The in-room tea and coffee were ok. In the room. the bath was really high to climb into. This would have been virtually impossible for an older person. The mirror on the wall, was at a ridiculous height. I admit I am just over 5 foot, but it could barely see the top of my head. The tv seemed to be set to streaming only, we couldn't find any free to air and there were no tissues or bottled water in the room. Also, there is no lift to the accomodation. Not recommended if you have mobility issues.

Lovely stay, we had one of the loft rooms, rooms was clean and tidy, really quirky room, slightly on the slant, bed was comfy and location was great.

My flight to bath was cancelled on the day of my travel because of bath weather I reach this hotel to try.to receive a voucher or change the date of my booking since i was no longer travelling. They denied my requests When i go to bath for sure i will.go to ajother hotel. Even booking experiences that were not refundable had options for my situation

Nice place in the center. Rooms separate from the pub. Sufficiently spacious, excellent shower. Mattress was on the thin side and the bed was a bit too narrow/too tight for our stature for our taste. Slept well. A lot of noise from outside. Breakfast was also fine, although I personally would have liked a little more variety.

Stayed here for 2 nights. Helpful staff, the room was quite nice and the breakfast was very good. Pub also has good atmosphere.

Horrible food. Zero flavor in hummus. Kindly mentioned and nothing done. Servers are ok. Can’t speak of rooms. Hope beds are more satisfying than the eats :-(

Used this place as a rendezvous to get out of the rain because it's got an easy to find location. Didn't disappoint, plenty of seats/tables and tasty snacks washed down with good beers. Would recommend 👌

Lovely pub and hotel. Owner was super helpful and staff was friendly. The room was cosy & clean. Location was perfect & only a short walk to the city centre. Really had the best stay! Will definitely be returning to Bath and the Black Fox Hotel!

Love this pub. Found it the once, regular forever. Truly great local beers, and kind and friendly staff too. Just one thing: BRING BACK THE MENA STOUT!! It is the best stout in the world (possibly) and I want it back!

Small but nice range of bitters available, bit pricey but not horrific!

Called in for a for a drink late afternoon. Lovely little place with good beer on tap, serving many different palettes. The bar was tended by a fabulous lady who ensured our time spent here was truly enjoyable and even recommended her favourite local restaurant.. would definitely return!

As a pub average. Food quality + quantity has gone downhill, save your money if you're going to eat here and don't go for food. Last time I came here the staff just forgot about my order and I know because the chef was on a break the entire time and then I had to ask for the food again after 45 mins. Mistakes happen sometimes. It's a nice location otherwise but nothing special.

Passed this pub while walking around Bath, as it was raining, thought we'd pop in for a drink. Small inside but there's another level underneath too. Was lovely & warm in there and barman was friendly.

Nice, friendly, and welcoming. Rooms are spacious and kept to a high standard of cleanliness. Located only a few 100m the centre of Bath, great for shopping, restaurants and bars/pubs.

Older pub. Bit off in spots, room was decent but small, bathroom awesome refurbishing and great toiletries. Only had breakfast, fine. Service very good. Parking a total mess as with most hotels in Bath, but great location. Door locks are nonsense. 2 keys, one for outer door. One for room. Skeleton keys. Had to lock ourselves in room, and one person in the room with one out was hopeless. Need real locks as next project. Closing every door was as noisy as a bomb going off. No lift, plan accordingly.

Lovely little pub. It is really cosy inside and the staff are friendly. Also has seating outside for when the weather is nice. The menu is small but it has all the main pub dishes that you would expect. Went for sausages and mash and the food was delicious. Would definitely recommend

The Black Fox appeared in the most recent Vodafone advert with Ronan Kemp an a Mini Cooper. It's ideal location puts it near the Center of Bath. Next to the 5* Gainsborough Hotel.

This hotel is perfectly located downtown with access to stores, restaurants and city sites! Parking is two blocks away, long walk (they say very close on hotel website) Very old building, with uneven floors, not very clean, dirty roll down blinds, lipstick stains on duvet, bathroom sink, glasses in room not clean, no ventilation and heater not working in room Walls very tin, you hear the conversation in the next room, including shower and flushing toilet Noisy city traffic Room #23

Convenient city centre pub. Nice atmosphete, reasonable range of ales. Unfortunately, establishment always seems pervaded by a slightly unpleasant odour...

Was served today by the young girl with short blonde hair was absolutely lovely and had such amazing service and had great charisma. will definitely be coming again ;)

There was no one in when we arrived, that sometimes is a bad sign, but more people came over the next hour. The barman was polite and knowledgeable about the local beers and ciders. We ordered food; fish & chips, steak & ale pie and a rump steak (I have to say it was the best rump steak I've had for a very long time), it was juicy, tender and perfectly cooked for medium rare. The only slight disappointment was the mash beneath my brother-in-laws pie, it was crusty and dry, like it had been over warmed in the microwave. Other than that everything else was perfect and I'd still give 5 stars. The dessert was brownies with clotted cream and ice cream - perfect. The Bristol cider I had was incredible. All in all, it was a great lunch...

Withe the exception of a good location, Not at all as described, so look elsewhere. The bathroom door was for someone 5 feet 8 inches or less. No bathmat so could easily fall. Stairs with little or no lighting. Less than helpful staff. No onsite parking as described in their listing. I could go on and on.

Nice place, the room is generally small, the bathroom, the shower part doesn't close the door properly so water comes out. They are small things. Should I congratulate good service? Excellent breakfast… I would have liked it to have an elevator but they are details, the rest is perfect

Great hotel! Indeed, as I could see in some comments, the floor of the rooms is a little sloping but nothing too serious. The room has a lot of charm and the hotel is in a great location. Hearty and well-cooked breakfast!

I had the best experience here. The room was comfortable, the staff friendly and the location perfect for a walking tour of the city. I just want to warn everyone that the building doesn’t have an elevator, so you need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to your room.

We stayed at the Premier Inn ‘Bath City Centre’ on a couples break with our friends. The ‘ Black Fox’ is conveniently two minutes walk away from the hotel on the way into Bath town. We stopped for lunch and drinks and we all really enjoyed it. There is a lovely relaxed atmosphere and a friendly welcome from the manager and staff. There is a great selection of ales and drinks and a nice lunch menu. We ordered steak sandwiches and fish finger sandwiches for lunch, all cooked perfectly and tasting great. We ordered ales, fizz and a ‘gin flight. ’The ‘Black Fox’ is modern and clean and we all enjoyed it so much, we returned for drinks at the end of our day in Bath and were welcomed again by the friendly staff and manager. This is truly a place where the customer is genuinely looked after and service is top notch. We would highly recommend and look forward to visiting again. Thank you.

Wonderful central location in Bath. Parking is a bit of a hassle, but that’s part of the culture in Bath. Good beer on tap. Phenomenal breakfast.

It's old and the floors are sloping, but it has charm. Everything is lovingly furnished (no fridge), very clean and room 21 is very large compared to the others.

Lovely breakfast, fast service (prob because it was early and I was alone) .hot and tasty (maybe a grilled tom and a few mushrooms would be a nice addition but what i had was filling and enough for me at that time)

Great place to stay in bath as it is very central. Their rooms are very warm, quiet and safe. Tea and coffee and biscuits is offered in the rooms. Downstairs, we had breakfast and the food is local, fresh and tasty. The portions are big and they set us up for the day's exploration of Bath.

Solid selection of local beers and ales on tap.

The service was lovely but the food was expensive for what they advertised and provided. They didn’t serve hand made Belgian style waffles and the maple syrup was maple flavoured sugar syrup. It was disappointing. We would have made different choices if they’d advertised their food honestly.

Stayed in Bath for a couple of nights over the weekend and came across this gem. Great bar staff and a wonderful selection of local beers and spirits. My favourite was the Spiced Rum with Hot Ginger Beer. My wife loved the vodka and light Tonic. The mixers were by approval of HRH Prince of Wales!! Food menu looked good but on this occasion we didn't partake. Another time. Give it a go as the atmosphere was really relaxing

Lovely rooms located very close to all of the key sites in Bath. The breakfast was very generous and the staff were kind and attentive.

Excellent service on a very busy Saturday. Great selection of drinks. We actually left to go to another pub, where we had a table booked for the rugby, but service was horrendous so we gave up and returned to the black fox. We decided wisely that their selection of local gins was a much better option than watching Scotland beat England!

Chose this as we parked in Avon rd car park and it was nearby. The menu sounded nice and had veg and gluten free choices so was ideal for all. We had soup, hummus, burger, fish finger sandwich washed down with some local ales and porter. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere with good food and service and nice toilets! No wonder it was full the whole time we were there with tables being replaced as soon as people left and everyone looked satisfied 😊

Visiting from Australia. Stayed here two nights. Had dinner and breakfast. Absolutely loved it! Fantastic location, great atmosphere, friendly staff, yummy food (have the burger it's delicious) and great selection of gin.

Looks cosy on 1st impression but it's cold (put your heating on please).

Stay here for one night. The location is good with breakfast included. The room is small but meet all needs.

Stayed at The Black Fox as it is close to the Chapel Arts Centre. Great drinks selection, local craft beers, ciders and gins. Hotel room to a high standard - loved the quaintness of the building while having those modern conveniences. Worth a visit for a drink, also a great location to stay in Bath.

If you suffer from seasickness or carsickness you will probably feel dizzy and nauseous as soon as you set foot in your room on the third floor. It feels like being on a boat in rough seas, it's completely tilted. Otherwise nice, clean and welcoming. Great location for exploring Bath city centre.
