This place is a total disgrace the landlady (Lou) who is a alcoholic with shaking hands serving your food . Poor quality of food too add All microwave or pre cooked food And Gloria is even worse total nut job I strongly advise not to visit this place. I miss the original owners, they knew how to run a campsite and a pub But these to women (Gloria and Lou) have no clue And I hope they lose this place and replace them with true people who care about the site and the pub AVOID THIS PLACE

We went to see family who were staying at this site. We were made to feel welcome from Gloria and the setting is beautiful. Nature at its finest. Lots of chickens and turkeys that just add to this beautiful site. Toilets and showers were top notch. Very clean and the water was as hot as you wanted. The guests on site were very welcoming, and the pub on an evening was a perfect way to relax and have a chat. Thank you for having us, and the eggs were amazing. We will be back soon.

Just like to say a big thank you for welcoming 12 bikers who unexpectedly rode in on a Sunday lunch time out of season. 11 indecisive males and myself caused chaos ordering food & drinks but the lady behind the bar was great. Understandably the food was a bit slow to come out ( as far as I’m aware there was only 1 other lady working in the kitchen ) but all 12 meals arrived on the table at the same time and I didn’t hear any complaints from our group. Pubs like this are having an extremely hard time to stay afloat in this current climate but we need them to stay open, so THANK YOU once again and I’m sure you will see us again one day.

We held a function here (wake) and I cannot recommend this location enough. From the first contact right through to the end of the function, Gloria could not have done any more to make the day go smoothly! The food was amazing and this was far from a beige buffet. We had a massive spread of fresh meats, cheeses, breads, veg....and scones with cream first (truly the Devon way)! She was prepared for everything and coped well with the vast amount of people that came back and gave us free run of the whole pub! Such a beautiful, traditional Devon pub....keep up your amazing work Gloria, its hugely appreciated and we will be back (under better circumstances next time!) THANK YOU! :-)

Emailed asked could you cater for 10 some vegetarians and gluten free was told yes even got separate fryers. Emailed saying new chef with new menu. Got to pub all dressed up.No table laid. Menu wrote on piece of paper about 6 items no steaks no vegetarian. Asked can you do vegetarian said they will go check. So yes ok. We had to put tables together so could sit together. No grapefruit juice.no archers.no kopparberg. So ordered some different drinks. Food as no steaks and not much on menu 3 of us thought may have vegetarian and 4 lasagne. When said 4 lasagne turned around and said only got 1 piece left. So with this we decided enoughs enough and drank our drinks and left. While getting drinks a member of our party heard chef say she really needs to start learning how to cook a steak. Total let down as mum daughters night away ended up in a chip shop. Can not believe we were lied too. Please stay away

What an absolute total let down! I booked a table for 10 well behaved females, including 3 elderly aunts, 2 vegetarians and a celiac ON the 24th February for the Saturday 26th March, so practically a whole month to prepare. Totally reassured that 'Gloria and her new chef' lol could cater for what was supposed to be a very special evening with our family, daughters, aunts and cousins . I chose this pub because it was near to our holiday home we were staying at, the website looked brilliant and the emails of reassurance that it would be an evening to remember, but most of all for the varied food we'd need/want to have pn that night well it was.. definitely a night to remember but for all the wrong reasons. Firstly the table/s would be in a room next to the bar, they were actually in the bar.. We had to ourselves put the 2 tables together..sticky and not set up for dining either.. Secondly a good selection on the menu was promised and a decent choice for the Vegetarians and celiac.. The actual choice of menu, (which was badly hand written on s scrap of paper, no proper menu) was absolutely rubbish! ham egg and chips, sausage and chips vegetarian hotdog, curry oh and lasagne.. as the other lady reviewer said she had the last one, which was disgusting! The gentleman behind the bar appeared to be a 'customer' and didn't know what to do, and the lady, whom I assumed was Gloria, came out in a grubby khaki T shirt, hair stuck to her head and announced to one of the party that she really needed to learn how to do a steak and get a grip with cooking. So we tried to order drinks, I say try because at least 3 of the drinks we requested they didn't have... We stayed for about 30 minutes and left. As the organiser of this 'meal' I felt utterly embarrassed and very annoyed, as were the rest of the party. Our advice to any prospective patrons to this pub... Don't bother, really, it was an aweful experience. It absolutely ruined the evening as there was no way any other local venue could cater for us at such short notice.. Plus we didn't know the area so just returned to our vacation home, fed up and hungry! I hope you read this Gloria.. Take your website down... Its not correct.. Plus you could have made a killing that night and a damn good laugh... What a waste of a pub..

Me and my two children visited for the first time as we are not local. Website looks good and positive so booked a table for 6pm on Saturday evening. Arrived, gentleman at the bar very friendly however had no clue about table bookings - they hadn’t reserved a table for us (probably because there was no body else eating which should have been my first warning sign). We picked a table, we’re told the printer wasn’t working so waited 15 minutes to see the menu to which it had the following handwritten on: adults- ham, egg&chips / sausage&chips /lasagne/spaghetti bolognese then for the children - chicken nuggets&chips or smaller plates of the adults. We ordered, although by this point at 6:30 I expected it to be more full on a Saturday evening for food but it was still us. I was told 20-30min wait - so I kept the kids occupied whilst waiting and thought hopefully it’s nice food for the wait. 45 minutes later the food comes out to which I don’t even know if I held in the shocked look on my face. It was awful. I can’t cook anything well at all and even I could have done better than what came out. The garlic bread was inedible as hadn’t been cooked long enough, sausages looked like Richmond ones with oven chips, spag bol was mostly spaghetti and cheese, my lasagne looked like they’d dropped it and pushed it all back in and didn’t taste of anything it was watery. As we were finishing and getting out of there a big group turned up who decided to not eat there given that they’d booked a table and also didn’t have anything reserved and that most of them wanted lasagne but I’d had the last one so they only had the 3 items to choose from on the menu. The lady behind the bar was very abrupt and no social skills, gentleman very nice but unaware of what is going on. They probably should advertise if the kitchen has staff issues/closed kitchen/supply issues/isn’t looking to do food on a Saturday night as my poor children who were so well behaved waiting wasted a few hours of their holiday time eating rubbish food and waiting around. I’m appalled, such a shame for what looks like a lovely village pub from the outside and website. My advice - do not go there!

The worst service I have ever experienced. Booked a table for food. Stood at the bar waiting and the server was unsure which table we were on. Got sat at a random table and was only served one drink. We got told she would bring the other over. Half an hour later, after we had watched her serve many other customers drinks, The other drink hadn’t arrived and no menus. Super annoying as the place wasn’t even very busy so couldn’t see any reason behind the poor service. Paid for the one drink and left to find somewhere else where we would actually be acknowledged and get some food!

Nothing wrong with the service; the woman behind the bar was friendly and helpful enough. Entrance not unattractive with plants and row of paperbacks in the window. As for the interior environment - mmh! Well, actually, not that great. The main bar area is large with smaller room to the side and frankly all a bit basic. Drinks were fine and a quite nice County Best as one of the real ales. As for the food, we decided on sandwich/bruschetta and they were okay; certainly no problems in terms of quantity! Value about average I guess. Large parking area on the other side of the road, with campsite behind.

first the good - lovely friendly and very helpful lady serving at the bar and taking orders.pub was almost empty, no problem getting a table- should have alerted us to a problem. food was very poor, atmosphere non- existent. overall, not a good experience.Although the meat was generous, it was fatty, tough, overcooked.everything was slightly yellow, the batter, the yorkshire pudding, even the sauce on the cauliflower was yellow. Roast potatoes - not crispy. A plate of chilli nachos was hot, and looked very unappetising. The batter on fish and chips was spongy, bouncy, tough. the yorkshire puds seem to be made of the same thing. the fish inside the batter was good and nicely cooked and the chips were fine, so not all bad.The ketchup was a cheap watery version, really unpleasant.I did ask about the batter and was told it was like that because it was gluten free. I'm sorry but gluten free flour usually white and makes lovely light crispy batter. As a positive they are trying to provide gluten free foods to cater for allergies - I understand the need to provide a gluten free flour, but this was inedible so not suitable for anyone.we decided not have try dessert, or coffee. We have left some constructive feedback directly with the pub, so hopefully to will be better for you!

The staff and service was exceptional, friendly and very accommodating - nothing was too much trouble and there is a great atmosphere. The menu is good pub fair and there is something on it for everyone. Two of our party are non meat eaters, one being vegan. The menu had 6 or 7 vegetarian options and 4 or 5 vegan. It is very rare to find somewhere with so much choice for non meat eaters. The food was great and obviously prepared freshly and there is certainly plenty of it - we were all happily stuffed when we left.I would like to thank all at The Black Cock for providing the perfect place to eat and take friends for an enjoyable evening.

Came here to swim. The pool is old and run down and very cold (despite checking in advance and being told it was 30C) - too cold for children. We went to the bar/restaurant for tea and snacks afterwards. It was before opening hours but the member of staff agreed to make us some tea. She then told the children off for pressing the doorbell twice (I had already told them off but they are young). She then told them off for sitting on bar stools and told me my children (they weren’t all mine) were badly behaved and this was predominantly an adult area (we were the only people there). I found the place extremely unfriendly and staff rude. We will absolutely not be back.

What a disappointment, roast beef turned out to be Brisket, a cheap cut at best of times but when it has been cooked hours before & left in the oven sliced, in gravy it loses what little flavour it had. The same could be said about the roast potatoes, hard & dried out! In conclusion, the worst roast dinner we have ever had & barely an apology. At £10.00 a meal one can only say disgusting!

We were booked in for a 3 night stay but once we got there we soon realised that we were not allowed to park on the grass and unfortunately being in a campervan this proved difficult. What was frustrating was that I called the campsite prior to booking to check that we could have a pitch to fit the camper and awning, that we had small children and dogs and could we be pitched out of the way and told yes it was all fine. Not the case at all and after a 5 hour drive we ended up just driving away and found another campsite. oh and the toilets/showers were gross! I wouldn't bother with the black cock and go elsewhere.

Popped in whilst on a ride-out as we were looking for a nice quiet country pub to have a drink and bite to eat. Apparently under new ownership, we had a warm welcome from the proprietors, sampled some excellent beer and cider, and whilst the menu looked very tempting, as we weren't staying long just had a bowl of cheesy chips - which were very good. The pub has a lovely setting with ample car parking, and a campsite opposite - it would make and excellent stop-off if touring Devon. We're looking forward to returning to sample the food properly - and if we stick a tent on the bike, maybe a little more of the rather good (and obviously well-cellared) beer too.

Attended the Countryside Ball held opposite in a beautiful marquee on the lawn of the caravan park. Wonderful paella (well done chef) and spit roast, great band, lively locals (who competed on the bucking bull!) and a wonderful atmosphere. The landlady asked me whether I was seriously only going to stay one night as usually people don't leave for several days and I can see why. With nothing to rush home for I decided to make a weekend of it and had a thoroughly good time. Thanks all. See you again soon.

We went to the black cock for the may bank holiday , we had a fantastic meal ov wild bore sausages served by a very polite young girl . There was a fantastic band on in the garden and the pub was packed out with locals and holiday makers alike ! Everyone was very friendly and a good time was had by all !! I'm not sure where DEVONWITCH stayed but looking at her other reviews she obviously likes a good moan ; ))

4 of us were looking forward to celebrating my friens birthday with a meal an live music. On arrival i thought the pub looked like it needed a good spring clean. We had to fight to get to the bar- although there was space enough the locals did not seem eager to facilitate our buying a drink. One customer was extremely rude to the young bar tender without just cause. Our glasses were very dirty, and the wine measure was short. we mentioned we ha a table booked and the owner waved her hand over the crowd and said you're over there- there were 2 tables laid for 4! we scrambled through the crow to find a table, but there were no menus- so we had to scramble back again and ask fr one and were given one tatty piece of A4 paper. we scrambled back to the table and waited.........in the end we left without hearing the band at all- we will not return.

Had a very good long weekend break in the recently refurbished bedrooms. Could not fault the staff who helped us during our stay.

Poor service. Impolite staff. Terrible food. No wonder it was the only place with seats available when everywhere else was busy. Avoid avoid avoid.

It was very busy and I'm not a fan of town centre pubs. However, for a quick drink before the theatre this was a perfect stop

Great place for coffee and cake especially if you have little ones. Coffee good and best value in the town. Staff always efficient and friendly. Seating inside and out both with good views and the kids have freedom to play. Even got a loyalty card.

Not very nice, needs massive refurb. Garden disgusting, toilets disgusting and £6.50 for a pint of 1664 to add insult to injury.
