Sunday lunch. Loads of well cooked veg and tender meat. Only criticism was the vast amount of thick (bland) gravy poured over the entire meal. Would have preferred a gravy boat so could choose how much gravy to have. Unfortunately the gravy dominated all the other flavours - other wise would have been a delicious Sunday Roast. At £20 a head I would have expected delicious (non-generic) gravy that compliments the meal. Sticky toffee pudding was to die for ! Lots of warm sticky toffee sauce and a light and delicious sponge , and some lovely vanilla ice cream ! Staff were lovely , service quick and efficient. Lovely ambience. Minor tweak with the gravy recipe / and a gravy boat and would have been top marks !

We picked this pub based on the tripadvisor reviews and its proximity half way between where we live and where a cousin lives for lunch. This is a nice old fashioned looking pub from the outside and is smart and clean in the inside. The staff were friendly and welcoming and there was a nice feel about the pub. The menu was interesting but being a Sunday we all went for the beef or lamb roast dinners. The food was very good, the meat was tender and tasty, veg fresh and good rich gravy. Three of us had dessert which we all enjoyed. Overall we were all very happy with the price and quality of the food and would certainly return should circumstance dictate again.

I arranged a special surprise 90th birthday lunch for my mother with 22 family members that had travelled from as far afield as the US and Australia to attend. The location is stunning, with the olde world beams, nooks and crannies of the building. The room in which we feasted, was more than larger enough to accommodate us all and we had direct access to the beer garden at the front of the Inn which was great, as it was a beautiful warm day. The food prepared by Rob and his team was absolutely 'on the money' and the service could not possibly have been any better! The Black Bull's team worked extremely hard, making it a very special event for my mother and certainly making my day! They really went the extra mile to ensure that everything went superbly. I'm hard to please, so well done to all of you and my heartfelt thanks!

The worst main course I have had in recent years. There was very little of the main ingredient as stated on the menu and the flavour was overwhelmed by ancillary ingredients leaving an unpleasant greasy after taste.

We had a wonderful stay during April 24. Our room was spacious with a lovely bathroom. Rooms are separate from the pub and well equipped. Staff gave us a warm welcome and useful information on surrounding areas. The food is delicious and breakfast menu offers a great choice. The pub does not serve food every night just check when booking. This is in an ideal spot for visiting Cambridge.

A few things that were slightly disappointing but I raised these with the hotel rather than put them here. I hope they make the changes. Comfortable room and bed. Menu needs improvement. Emphasis on beef could be spread across other meat and fish. Definitely need an external courtesy light as a safety measure especially if it’s icy.

We went for lunch to celebrate the birthday of the head of our family. The place was pleasant and clean. However, the food was overpriced. £32 for a steak that arrived in strips and a few chips and barely nothing else is extortionate. The fish arrived very dry on the top and the chocolate roulade arrived in thin strips too! We were waiting a long time for just three hot drinks too. Very dissappinting. Will not be eating there again.

Great food and lovely staff. Awful family with lots of kids aged around 8-10 that ran around the restaurant, past our table almost constantly playing chase, somewhat spoiled the visit. We had to change tables to avoid them and the shrieking was really dreadful. After moving tables to a different area we really enjoyed it. The food was amazing and the strawberry soufflé was to die for. It would have been nice if the manager had intervened and had a word with the parents as their behaviour was completely unacceptable. I don’t like complaining and it made me rather uncomfortable having to do so. Other customers were clearly bothered by them and they nearly knocked another elderly gentleman over. On the plus side, it’s a beautiful building and the staff are so lovely. The food is fab and I would recommend it to everyone

We visited for Sunday lunch and really enjoyed the food and the attentive service as well as that it is dog friendly as well. My starter was the goats cheese salad, it was done very well and attractively presented with a mustard, honey & balsamic dressing; which really delivered the sweet/salty and slightly acidic flavour that complemented the goats cheese. I followed this with the roast beef. The beef was wonderfully tender, rare-medium that I like, with plentiful gravy, root vegetables (parsnips and carrots), cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes. The potatoes were beautifully done, obviously cooked in lots of fat that made them wonderfully buttery on the inside but still crisp on the outside. My wife had the crab salad as a starter followed by the roast duck. She likes her duck well done, rather than rare, and commented that it was just right; being succulent and not allowed to go dry which can be the case when she has ordered this dish elsewhere. Clearly there is a talented chef at work here. My portions were a good size and the staff were attentive without being intrusive. We will certainly be coming back.

Two of us spent the night here on 10th July. We had returned to the UK after a 3 week trip around Europe. We had a room of good size but very average. The tea making facilities were in the wardrobe and there was no hair drier. We also had dinner in the pub. This is a pub trying to be something above its station. The pub is said to have been awarded rosettes over the years but I imagine that was some time ago as the meal we had was way below expectations. The rump of lamb was very tender but tasteless accompanied by over roasted potatoes wrapped in mange tout. The wine list had wonderful descriptions which hid the truth. The Chilean Merlot was far from outstanding but below average. The price for dinner bed and breakfast was £ 258. In all the hotels we stayed in around Europe , this was the worst value at the highest price.

We stayed one night in a large but rather dreary room adjacent to the main bar and restaurant. The plainness of the room was emphasised by the lack of light coming from the single window and no window in the bathroom which has a bath but no shower. OK tea and coffee making facilities. No tissues. The bar has limited seating for a pre-dinner drink. The menu was pretty ordinary though i did manage to find a decent starter of pork belly but my main of cod roll with prawn mousse was disappointing. glad we had only the one night stay.

Sadly, the only good thing about our lunch today was the main waiter/barman. He was friendly & cheerful. We arrived for a pre booked lunch with family (7 of us) & were extremely surprised, firstly that there was only one other occupied table of 4 as we’d had to preorder our food & secondly it was freezing. Yes, it was during a particularly cold spell, but I asked for blankets, they didn’t have any & I kept my coat on for the whole meal. Some of our party were closer to heaters, which helped them, but no-one else could feel heat from them. The food was not much better - the starters seemed to be the only thing that was hot. The roast turkey was cold, the veg were all burned & hard & we all left most of the food on the plate. The desserts were below average too & when we asked for more custard, the smallest amount was given to us, we had to ask for more. It felt as if there wasn’t even a chef on the premises & that was why we had to preorder, for the staff to reheat which they struggled to do. We would like to have stayed for coffees etc, but were all too cold. We complained a few times, but to no avail. We will not be back, even in summer.

Looked lovely and inviting from the outside. Visited in Dec with snow. The place looked postcard picturesque and romantic. Guest experience overall however was underwhelming. Firstly, the place was freezing cold. The bar/restaurant in particular. You could see your breath in the toilets where the temperature was on a par with a fridge freezer. Radiators weren’t on in the bar/restaurant area. We sat there with coats on. No fire to keep warm. The staff explained the building is old and difficult to heat and they had not had a delivery of logs for the fire. Seemed odd. It would be pretty easy for someone to go to a local supermarket and pick up a load of logs. It was about -2 outside, yes cold but standard for a winter. We had spent the day in Cambridge which was busy, bustling with people. The many restaurants and bars were packed. No problems with heating. The accommodation in a modern out building was warmer, but not enough to get out of bed from under the covers. We wondered if there’s an issue with energy costs, however if that was the case surely the place shouldn’t be open. The room was ok. TV didn’t work, a bit tired decor and some switches and taps a bit temperamental. The staff working were nice and polite and overall the service was OK. Food was ok, but nothing special. It felt like the whole place had been abandoned by management. Very young staff (in their teens possibly) running the place. Felt like staff were there to just work a shift, no real host/front of house or landlord. Staff were busy but didn’t interact with any customers. Just no atmosphere. The place was empty for a Sat night in Dec, which is odd as other pubs we know in rural areas were packed. So, a place that has great promise but under delivering for a 4 star. We would have been happy to pay more for a better experience.

So many pubs in and around Cambridge are serving up bland, overpriced and disappointing Sunday roasts. Not at the Black Bull. Every item on the plate was full of flavour. Sweet roasted carrrots, perfect parsnips, gorgeously seasoned cabbage, comforting proper cheesy cauliflower cheese, beautiful roast lamb, glossy rich gravy all topled with a mighty impressive yorkshire pudding. There was 8 of us and we really didn't have to wait long at all. Exactly how great service should be. £18 doesnt sound cheap, but given that most pubs in Cambridge are serving tasteless frozen based roasts for the same price, the sunday roasts at the black bull are most definitely worth it. We will be back!

What a night, the food, the atmosphere and importantly the service we received last night completely blew me away. It is a very long time since I have been in an establishment where I was so impressed by the front of house team - and I use the word team, loosely, as Liz who was working the front of house single handily, managed every aspect of the shift on her own. She did so, with such grace and professionalism , the kind that I haven’t seen for a very long time, and having worked as a senior manager in several 5 red star luxury hotels, I feel experienced enough to say this with conviction based on what I saw last night. From the moment we arrived to the time we left, she perfectly orchestrated every element of her role with ease. Meeting, greeting, taking orders, servicing drinks behind the bar, serving food, which I must say was fabulous, taking payments, answering the phone, checking room guests in, clearing tables, and the list goes on. She is a real credit to herself, and the people she works for. I couldn’t leave my review without also celebrating the kitchen brigade who did a marvellous job and we enjoyed every mouthful. Between us we had the Chicken and Leek Terrine and Torched Mackerel to start, followed by the Tomahawk Pork Steak and the 28 Day Aged Sirlion Steak, and to finish with we shared a cheeseboard. Just wanted to finally congratulate the whole team on delivering an exceptional evening

My partner, mum and I visited for Sunday lunch at the beginning of November. We all had a lovely meal, and excellent service, couldn't fault it at all. My partner had soup to start and said it tasted homemade. Mum and I shared a starter portion of whitebait - the portion was easily enough for two and well cooked. Our mains were equally tasty and hot. However, we couldn't help but notice that the couple opposite, who had a child with them, appeared to be waiting awhile and were offered free drinks. When their food arrived, they complained that it was cold (ours was fine) and the landlord came over and I think either offered them a discount or free food. This didn't however put them off as we saw that they then proceeded to clear their plates of food! Very odd.

The last 3 times I have visited the pub I have been served by a young man that couldn't make it more obvious that he doesn't want to have to deal with the customers, every request seems to be the greatest of tasks and it seems to us all that he would prefer not to be there. We had Sunday Lunch here recently. The ambience and character of the venue is more than obvious. It was interesting that the majority of diners seemed to be local with few cars in the car park. We all had the roast beef for lunch which was excellent, tender and well presented. It came with an abundance of vegetables, unfortunately the carrots were very underdone as was the red cabbage. The plates were not cleared as is the norm when we eat out. Starters were acceptable with the Ham Hock and Soup as the favourites. One of the party had Whitebait which was, at best, very well done. Overall we liked the venue despite the valid comments on the vegetables.

We have now held 2 family events at the Black Bull Inn, both time for 20 people, with about half being under the age of 15. The food was delicious, well-presented and our server was friendly, thoughtful and very helpful. Having been a waitress myself many years ago, I know how much work is involved with taking care of such a large group.

It was a struggle to find food on a Sunday evening but we were delighted to find the Black Bull. Food and service were excellent, lovely cosy country pub.

On the way home stopped in. Really nice decor, but definitely more of a eating pub than drinking, lots of tables laid up and a very small bar. Some good arm chairs though.

Good food served by friendly, helpful staff. We stayed at the Inn all weekend and enjoyed breakfasts, lunch and dinners alike. Service is not fast, but it's not fast food being served, it's well prepared home cooked grub.

I picked the Black Bull as we were visiting the nearby Chilford Hall vineyard. It got very good reviews so we booked for one night. It was quiet but the staff all had a wonderful relaxed but efficient way about them. The menu was basic but the standard was really good. I had the poached eggs and ham for breakfast and the ham was local and really delicious. The rooms were comfortable too with everything you needed. A lovely little local pub that ticked all of our boxes.

Can’t really complain as such as everything was ‘fine’ but I wasn’t wowed by this place considering the reviews and also the prices. Several beers were not available and there was a bit of a feeling of nobody really being in charge.

We stayed here overnight as we had an early start at a local attraction. On arrival we were made to feel very welcome. We had lunch which was very good and then shown to our room. The room was extremely comfortable with a wide range of teas as well as coffee facilities. We ate in the pub in the evening and were again very impressed with not only the menu but also the range of beers available. The meal was of a very high quality. I would definitely recommend this as a base for seeing the local sites. The staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable.

Having pre-booked for a family birthday party for 16+ people you would have thought they would have been prepared. Sadly not and the arrangement of the tables left a lot to be desired. We had to move them and grab another table so people could actually sit down!

The website is very positive about the pub's achievements -rosettes everywhere - which, i'm afraid, I took at face value. It was an OK experience and i'm not complaining about anything at all, but on the night that we went it didn't seem all that special. Food was fine; service was fine - just nothing exceptional. I know the Red Lion at Hinxton, a sister restaurant, and prefer it to the Black Bull.

We had a table booed for a Sunday lunchtime but hadn't warned them that I am a fussy eater (some call it that!). They managed to give me a delicious lunch all the same with no fuss or complaint - thank you chef and waiter. A pleasure to go there. Sorry I live so far away from the pub. The others enjoyed their meal too.

The welcome we received set the tone for the whole evening. The standard of the service, food and drink were great too. No hidden extra charges and the prices were reasonable so will definitely go back.

Possibly the tastiest Sunday roast, definitely the smallest. The quantity control manager must have had an off day. Such a shame as the beef really was good. We do look forward to our Sunday Lunches . 3 shavings of carrots, a small floret of cauliflower, three small potatoes, and a few green beans, we were disappointed. 2 good and tasty slices of beef. What a shame.

We booked a late (1500) lunch for Mothering Sunday at rather short notice, but still managed to get a table. In spite of the fact that they were incredibly busy and we were late in the day, the food was plentiful and freshly cooked. The sirloin beef was done to perfection and the pork the same. The winter, country vegetables were equally good, and the roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds excellent. Real ale to start and it was a perfect day all round. Staff were friendly and helpful, despite being rushed off their feet, and made this a lovely occasion for both mothers present.

Always enjoy visiting here for something to eat and drink, usually breakfast items such as a bacon and egg roll, scrambled eggs on toast. Food quality is always very good, and I think the staff there are excellent. Polite, friendly and always very helpful. Visit about two or three times a month. We have bought plants, bags of peat or compost, and I like the collection of greeting cards for sale. Always good to spend the money accumulated on the Loyalty card.

£9 pounds for 3 cold takeaway sausage rolls at 4pm. Rip off. didn't display the price either hence ended up buying it as the guy had packed already. His friendly attitude doesn't cool the pain of such waste of money.

We first visited about 10 years ago when our daughter moved from Scotland to this area. We went in and were immediately spotted by the host "Yes sir, what can I get you?" with a welcoming smile. I was unfamiliar with the local ales, and was invited to try a selection free of charge. "Are you eating" he enquired. "Then have a seat, I'll bring your drinks over and get your order". And so it has continued for about 10 years. A place to really enjoy. In 2 weeks this will end. I just hope that when we next return, the new owner can continue this service. In the meantime, thank you!
