We had booked to meet a friend who lives down the road from the pub for Sunday lunch. Upon entering I noticed that the towels were on all three beer pumps, upon asking if there was any beer, the young man behind the bar informed me that there was not. The second young man obviously had a streaming cold, continually wiping his running nose with either the back of his hand or in the collar of his T-shirt. My wife wanted to leave immediately (she is a nurse and hygiene comes first) But we stayed after informing the young man with the cold (politely) to wash his hands and that we didn’t want him to serve our drinks. No beer so I opted for tap Guinness, my wife asked for a glass of Shiraz, it was obvious the young man had no idea what that was, I said ‘it’s red wine’ he said. ‘We only have these’ and one by one pulled out just three options, none of which he could either read of pronounce. We opted for the Cabernet Sauvignon, which he completely gave up on trying to say, and was the only one of the three bottles with more than a glass left in! All this time his nose was running and he was serving drinks, I did say to him, you shouldn’t be here, you should go home to bed, ‘I know he replied’ We ordered dinner, all three Sunday beef roast, two well done and one rare. When they arrived I was sort of taken aback. Mine looked rare and okay, the other two well done. But the Yorkshire puddings were flat, mine was even floppy, not even risen. The beef (although looking nice) was tough, and it might of helped if the knives had been sharp. It was a very amateurish attempt at cooking Sunday dinner. One young lad came over and asked is there anything you would like, I asked for another pint of Guinness, oh sorry, the barrel is off now, he replied. I have to be totally honest, it is the worst Sunday roast I have ever had in a pub, and no beer, a young chap with his nose dripping… Not a happy experience.

We went to the Bull last night and ordered 2 Burgers. They were lovely, Mine was the Cajun chicken and my other half got Cheese and Bacon burger. They were excellent value for money. We had previously been the week before and it was just ok. Last night Tony was cooking and it made a vast difference. We really enjoyed our meal, Well done.

We visited the Black Bull whilst out looking for somewhere to eat. The food was delicious (the best scampi I’ve ever had!) but the service and friendliness of the staff was even better. I’ve never been to a pub and made to feel so welcome. The two staff members who served us are a credit to this pub and will be the rain we are already planning many return visits.

Tony and the team catered for the reception after our family funeral. A 55 person buffet with a strong focus on vegetarian and vegan. What a brilliant spread it was! And thanks to the staff for being on hand throughout to make sure all the guests knew what was on offer. They really went the extra mile. It was clear that all the guests were enjoying themselves. Thanks so much ... a lovely end to a bittersweet day.

We stumbled upon this pup with a car full of hungry, restless kids. I'm so glad we did! We were greatest and seat swiftly and although the pup was very quiet for a Sunday afternoon it didn't lack atmosphere. The menu was impressive and the specials left me spoilt for choice. After ordering we were told to make ourselves at home and we went off to explore the beer garden. It's a lovely, secure area, where the kids let off some steam before checking out the pool table and chalkboard. Oh and the steps (babies new obsession) The food arrived in good time and the presentation and portions were also very impressive. The lamb chops were huge and so tasty! The childrens meals were perfect, I shared the babies roast dinner and I'm glad I did 😋 The family who are running the the place are lovely, welcoming and very down to earth, whilst still being very attentive and professional. The chef personally checked us during our meal which was a lovely touch. What more can I say? Other than, we will return!

Today we came in for lunch. We ordered 2 roast dinners (one was a vegetarian option). We also had lamb chops and steak meals. The food was delicious. The portions were of a good size - there was plenty. The vegetables were seasonal and tasted great. The food was well presented. The atmosphere was friendly and the staff regularly checked everything was ok with our meal. We will definitely eat here again.

We are on holiday in the area and like to try out different pubs for dinner. This was our third night and definitely the best meal so far. My wife likes her steak medium rare which is seldom achieved. Tonight was perfection. I had the Hunters chicken which was delicious. I couldn’t decide on which beer to have. I was given the chance to sample some of the range on offer. I chose the Brookhouse Bullock which I thoroughly enjoyed. The bill was very reasonable for the standard of food we received.

Totally unexpected little gem, food was great including allergy knowledge. I am gluten and dairy intolerant and the chef came out to check what he could put in my meal. This was a brilliant pub for affordable food made to an excellent standard, the staff were attentive and the chef even came out to ensure that meals were allergen free before preparing anything. This pub is criminally underrated. Had the Cajun Chicken Burger and it was absolutely phenomenal: an absolutely delicious and thick breast chicken breast fillet with a smoky and spicy kick, a very generous amount of crispy golden chips and onion rings on the side and a rich salad for less than £10 is a must get. Come here and get yourself some good pub grub! All food is prepared at the moment from scratch. Also! They offer gluten and dairy free options for people with intolerances. The chef is very careful and will come to your table if you have very specific requirements he will meet. You get a lot of value for your money and food is delicious.

Not even a "hi, what can I get you?" all I got was a grunt and "what do you want?" ordered 2 JD and cokes, she came back with 2 cokes and someone else's beer that she tried to charge me for. No apology or anything. Didn't bother to tell me that she'd run out of JD when I ordered. It was 9pm and there was still kids running around the place.

Staying locally with friends we decided to give the black bull another try (see previous reviews). The staff are warm and welcoming, the food very good (although it took a while to arrive) and the pub itself was a lot cleaner. One minor downside, the new landlord appears very insular and appears to cut himself off from his customers. Not ideal in a rural local community. Overall though a vast improvement from our last visit.

Visited one time only 2012. Once we'd pushed through the crowd of people smoking in the doorway we were met at the bar with people who stared silently (there was no music either) and wanted to know where we had come from because they could smell food on us (strangers coming in here with that exotic smell known as "food"!), a customer at the bar next to us then started to shout JOHN! JOHN! JOHN! at my partner (his name isn't john), then said in a loud voice "OH YOU LOOK LIKE JOHN!" now the whole pub was looking and sniggering! So we went to try and sit somewhere away from the bar with our drinks only to be entertained by more local men pulling their trousers down and comparing how old their bums looked!! Wouldn't recommend

We had not eaten in the Black Bull for over 8 months but with a new menu being released on the 2nd September by the new landlord and chef we booked a family meal. In total there were 14 of us so we did have a broad selection of meals from across the menu. I had the homemade steak and ale pie which was served with hand cut chips and fresh vegetables... excellent meal! The burgers were also great and the fist and chips was one of the largest portions you will ever see! Within out party we had three children and they were also very well catered for. Their meals being smaller versions of ours, all fresh and homemade. One of our kids wanted something slightly different to the menu which was catered for without any fuss. I would say that the food now is as good as anywhere within the Lune Valley, couple this with the friendly staff and well kept beers I would definitely recommend a visit.

My husband and I went to the Black Bull because we had passed it many times and always commented how nice it looked. We walked in the pub and immediately noticed that there was only 2 people in there. Didn't think much about it as it was a Monday evening. Ordered 2 diet cokes and asked for the menu. Bar maid said she'd have to check if they were still serving food ( it was 7.10pm!) Came back and said yes so we ordered 2 x sirloin steaks! Sat down and realised the diet cokes weren't diet but didn't want to cause a fuss so didn't say anything. Our meals came and I can honestly say we've never seen such tiny steaks. They certainly weren't sirloin ( more like sandwich steaks!) but again not wanting to cause a fuss and because we were starving, we tucked in! We immediately realised the steaks were sour! We ate a few chips which were fine but didn't dare eat the steaks. The landlord insisted on giving us a full refund which we didn't actually want but he gave it us anyway. Real shame because the surroundings are very well presented and in a lovely area but we won't be going back for food!

My wife and daughter joined me for a celebration meal - the 2 meals for £12.50 sounded like good value - don't be fooled - burnt chips, frozen fish borderline raw inside, burnt mushrooms, reheated mushy peas - Gordon Ramsay would have a field day! Really poor and no excuse to serve food of this quality to a paying customer in a beautiful rural pub in an amazing rural village.

Had a meal with the family a few weeks ago and was expecting much more. The pub looks great from the outside, like one of those hidden gems you sometimes get in villages that do fantastic locally sourced pub food - but it is not. Inside it is dingy and quiet, with just a few locals who seem to hang around the bar area. The bar staff are pleasant enough but seem a little bored with what they are doing, and the food was pretty poor, especially for the price. We actually had to send our meal back - which was meant to be roast chicken but seemed to be deep fried - and got burgers as a replacement - which to be fair were a little better. Its a shame i have to write a poor review because im not normally one to complain. I live locally-ish and always want local places to do well, but this place needs to try a little harder and It could be great! Re-visited on a Sunday afternoon to see if it was a one off as the first visit was a week day, but it was much the same.

Called here by chance when travelling through the area. The pub look quaint and traditional however the food and service were terrible. No warm welcome just received stares from the bar staff and a workman fixing the fire. Ten minutes after ordering drinks and food we were informed we'd been charged the wrong price the two for £9.50 meals weren't on so we would have to pay full price. The member of staff wasn't apologetic in fact she was rude and indeed intimidating standing over us staring at us. We decided to leave and asked for a refund. The bar staff then walked off to the kitchen came back and said it was ok. After we questioned what was ok we were then told they would do the meals for us. Well all I can say is we should have left. The chicken pie had seen better days, it was served with beef gravy and the chips were cold reheated, the plate was filled with carrots and broccoli which looked fresh however they were completely cold..add to this the unfriendly even rude attitude of the bar staff it made the whole experience one I'd not like to repeat...oh and the workman turned out to be the chef who after cooking our meals came back out into the pub in his uniform (minus apron)and proceeded to continue fixing the fire..not my idea of a good pub!!!!!

We have visited in the past and always been reasonably happy. Today was not a good experience. The bread was stodgy for both the egg mayonnaise baguette and the rarebit. The egg was congealing and the ‘seasonal salad’ was just a mishmash of little bits! So rather expensive at £27.85 for the above plus two traybakes and a small pot of tea. Sadly highly unlikely to return.
