We booked The Black Bull for a meal as there were 8 of us and a dog. We did the same last year and meal was nice. This year we ordered our food. When food came 3 meals weren't quite right and were returned to kitchen to be changed. Another meal of chili con carne was freezing cold in the middle. This was returned to kitchen and no apology from staff. The replacement came and parts were still cold. Then as we were about to leave one of the staff said we should have not been upstairs with dog. We explained that we had done the same the previous year and also a member of staff sent us upstairs with dog and when we booked we also said the dog would be with us. She did not acknowledge that but laughed and told us she had worked there for 14 years and dogs have never been allowed upstairs. So all in all a very disappointing experience and won't be returning.

We walked in and it was crickets. The whole place stopped dead and stared. The woman to my left with a scowling face passed comment that she vet we wanted menus, while she sat counting the takings on a table. The scowl said it all. Not a single scrap of atmosphere. No music, no ambiance. It was cold and unfriendly. We didn't feel welcome at all and walked straight out of the other side as fast as we could. Dreadful vibe. We were a party of 5 who wanted dinner. We went over the road to The Terrace Cafe instead. They were accommodating.

I stayed at the Black Bull Inn with a friend on Friday night. We had an ensuite twin room booked for one night. We had an evening meal and drinks in the bar. The bar was very busy, but we managed to get a table OK. The service and the food was excellent. Friendly staff and very helpful. The rooms are on the second floor, so they are quiet in the evening and overnight.

A pleasant night on our long distance hike on St Cuthbert's Way. Don't be put off on arrival by it being an old style drinking pub for working people because the rooms are comfortable, the breakfast really good and staff friendly in a no nonsense way. It's right in the centre of the village and next door is a fantastic Italian restaurant. Local people friendly. All together a great stopping point with everything to hand and your bound to meet up with other hikers for a laugh between the pub and restaurant.

Visited today for a pub lunch after a drive up from Sunderland. A very traditional pub serving very traditional pub food. There was some background music but it was at low volume and not intrusive. Carpeted lounge floor meant that acoustics were good and you don't have to shout when talking to your companions. I wouldn't say the food and drink were of exceptional quality but they were good value. Staff were pleasant and efficient. Coffee was freshly made and excellent. Although in the town centre there is plenty of free parking within a few minutes walk. Would we come here again?. Sure we would.

Six of us ate & drank in The Black Bull after a day of walking in the hills. I was a bit apprehensive after a luke warm welcome a few years ago on my last visit plus an offhand response to a telephone enquiry I made regarding food the previous day. I've got to say however, that we were all more than satisfied with what we ate, sampling a few on the menu between us. Menu is sensibly priced & good portions. The staff were all fine but special mention must go to the lady who was bringing out the food, working extremely hard with a good sense of humour. It's a quirky place, quite old fashioned in a nice type of way, with a juke box & a pool table. It's quite snug but most customers seemed to be visitors so that led to a bit of cross table chit-chat. I'd certainly return.

Called in a couple of times whilst staying in the area The food in the evening was indifferent The fish & chips were great, however the steak sandwich was inedible, as it was so overcooked, it was like leather. Having taken a post mix Diet Coke back to the bar to change for a can as it was so flat and being further charged for it, I really couldn’t be bothered complaining about the steak sandwich, so will just avoid in future. Shame really, as some of the staff seem competent

A very traditional Northern pub in the centre of Wooler, with easy access to St Cuthbert's Way and Wooler Common/Northumberland National Park, and a short drive to Holy Island. The Black Bull is a drinkers' pub for locals, and provides B&B for short stays, many visitors using it as a stop off when hiking or making pilgrimage. There is a limited bar menu but those wanting more choice/finer dining are directed to the restaurant next door. Residents have access to a lounge with board games, and the bar has darts, juke box, and quiz nights. There is a car park but this gets full. Service was good in the bar and on check in. As the bar is a little tired, I was pleasantly surprised to find my room to be lovely, with nice toiletries, comfy bed, fluffy towels, and a better than average tea tray. It was noisy on the street outside so I would recommend ear plugs. Breakfast was a good standard of traditional fare, pre-ordering making it efficient. Wooler is a small village, so a visitor stands out, and the locals in the pub (and in the cafes and shops I visited) were chatty and friendly to me. The staff also made a point of saying hello, asking my name and so on and making me welcome. Reading some other reviews that were negative, I can only think those visitors have had unreasonable expectations - it isn't a gastro pub or a hotel, but is warm and welcoming and in keeping with the price tag!

As the title says we really enjoyed our food, the steak was cooked perfectly to my liking. Unfortunately the service was not great. I'm not sure if the server was just new but she needs to brush up on etiquette. My first pet hate is taking the orders too soon before the table are ready to order. I hadn't even had chance to look at the menu and 2 of our party we're still downstairs at the bar. Yes a big table had come in which would delay our order if they ordered first but we were out for a meal and weren't necessarily in a hurry. We did tell her that we weren't ready and to give us a few minutes, but she hovered behind the table pad in hand which made us rush. I didn't feel like I had time to read the menu properly and was quite disappointed when once I'd ordered I spotted that I could have had a starter as a main course, and that there was a special board downstairs as I hadn't noticed it when we went upstairs. Then my second pet hate when eating out is clearing plates before the rest of the table are finished eating. Firstly the same lady took one plate when one person was finished, then another 2 a bit later but then the last 2 were still there even after we'd asked about desserts. I know it is a pub and not a fine dining restaurant however as diners it makes you feel very awkward as if they don't really want you there.

Four of us arrived in Wooler today for a 7 day stay. Went for a meal at the Black Bull Inn. Ordered and was told it might be a good half hour wait. Fine, not a problem - it was a busy Saturday night. However, the wait was 1 hour and 20 minutes. When it did arrive the food was very poor. Much of our meals appeared reheated, possibly more than once. We expressed our dissatisfaction at the delay and the food quality and was assured the manager would be informed. The least we expected was that she would seek us out and maybe apologise. But no. They had our money up front and we left somewhat disappointed. We will not be returning during our stay in Northumberland.

Didn’t get much in the way of a welcome or service with a smile from the bar staff during the evening, we seemed more of a hindrance. Breakfast was excellent, good value for money and the staff were helpful and friendly.

We recently rented a cottage in Wooler. On arrival at Wooler at 7.30pm on a Saturday evening we were struggling to get a table for food as everywhere was full. The staff at the Black Bull actually opened up the upstairs restaurant specially for us so that we could have a meal - despite the fact that the downstairs was absolutely packed.

Bought some beautifully grown bedding plants for a reasonable price. The hanging baskets were stunning. Very tempted.

Large chain, standard menu offerings, busy, noisy setting, but good sea views, nice outside area. Food came quickly once managed to order at the busy bar. Burger sauce was the best item. Small burger Pattie, creamy coleslaw, hubby had monkfish scampi, bit over battered. Both sets of chips under cooked, when we were asked how our meal was, our reply was just received with blank stare and no response before waiter cleared our plates and left! Buffet breakfast the following morning as we expected! Basic sausages, overcooked black pudding, the bacon, mushrooms and hash browns ok, had run out of baked beans, but at least you could order different eggs if didn’t fancy fried.

Cool bar with friendly clientele. Staff are smiley and attentive. Love the skiing theme and the Brewdog beer. Great having the ski videos on the big screen aswell. Just a thought, have you thought about showing the live skiing on Eurosport/Discovery+?

It was ok but nothing to push the boat out for. My daughter wanted chicken tikka panini but apparently had no tikka, I asked for a sandwich on brown bread cake but they had no brown bread cakes left. Really?? And this was only just after noon. Nothing special about the ham sandwich which all in all tasted bland. The dog ate most of it.
