Called into the Black Bull for a late lunch. Hadn’t visited for a while but delighted to see it was as cosy and welcoming as I remembered. Friendly service, great food and a lovely atmosphere in the bar with a roaring fire. water bowl for our labrador and a nice chat with the locals. Will try to make sure we don’t wait so long this time before we make a return visit. Well done to the staff and volunteers. Wish it was my local!

We have wanted to stay at the Black Bull for a wee while and for the most part it did not disappoint. We had a lovely super king room with a very comfy bed and a really good shower. The bar was cosy with a beautiful log fire to keep us warm after a day out walking. We had dinner in the restaurant and it was very nice. The staff were all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The only slightly negative comment is about the breakfast. You get a form to complete the night before with your selection of hot food and I found it a bit disappointing. No link sausage only square or vegan. So I opted for vegan and they weren't very nice. No haggis either. The scrambled eggs were greasy and toast was more like bread that had not seen a toaster so we felt that part was not as good as it could be but we would stay again as it's a lovely historic building with a nice atmosphere.

We are usually in Aberfoyle quite a bit passing through and we asked for a new Restuarant recommendation and the Black Bull came up so we made our first visit on Sunday and what a lovely pub, disabled friendly and lovely warm welcoming locals who I believe own it, fantastic, who can't be impressed. So we got a table to order dinner and my husband ordered his usual which was soup then steak pie (he measures pubs by this) and I had the Mushroom, Walnut and Mushroom Bolognaise with Garlic Bread both were winners and if you haven't tried this Veggie Bolognaise then it's a must. Lovely way to end our travels and sad to leave the lovely atmosphere and the bar staff who were so lovely, we'll see you again

I booked a table in the restaurant for dinner, midweek. The dining room is lovely, but all the plants are fake, and the candles on the table are fake. Most of the tables were empty so there was not much atmosphere. Service was slow, the waitress took a while to take our order and it took a long time for our main course to arrive. I had beer battered haddock, the batter was soggy and the fries were like cardboard. The dessert (chocolate brownie) was much better.

We returned for another overnight stay following a great time a year ago - we were not disappointed. This time we had a bigger room - Super King - it was really spacious - the bed was enormous and so comfy - the decor very tasteful and the shower room smart. Dinner was delicious - would highly recommend the Salmon & Prawn Tagliatelle. Cheeseboard with a choice of 3 cheeses more than enough for 2 people. Breakfast - all cooked to order and served at a time you choose from the evening before - lots of top ups of tea & coffee. Bar - lovely cozy space with a warm fire. Well set up gantry with a wide choice of drinks - not overly expensive. Good atmosphere - even though it is a village pub and used a lot by the locals we were not made to feel like outsiders. Staff - attentive, helpful and friendly - what more could you ask for. Hope to return next Spring !

We stopped at the Black Bull on route to the highlands, in mid January. We had a really nice experience, the story of the pub being restored by the community was fantastic. We had a comfortable room, no issues. We ate in the bar, the welcome from staff and locals was lovely. Roaring fire good food and company. Would definitely stay again. Only tip for January, put the heating on from 6 rather than 7. Great breakfast too.

We went as we're staying in the area and had heard good things. Overall very happy with our experience with a nice atmosphere and decor. The staff were very friendly. My only slight gripe is that I didn't quite get what I asked for in that o asked for my steak medium rare and it was medium well, so quite far from my preference. I also asked for apple tart with cream and was given ice cream. Neither of these were massive issues just a slight annoyance as the correct orders were on our receipt but had not been followed. Mind, I didn't mention anything at the time so there was no opportunity for the establishment to correct. I didn't mention this because despite being slightly incorrect, the food was still delicious. The steak was very good and would have been amazing if cooked less. The apple tart was loaded with sweet cinnamon and was really delicious.

Food was absolutely disgusting, I ordered macaroni (which I would say is an easy meal for a chef to make) all it tasted of was mustard- couldn’t even taste the cheese. I went back and ordered a different meal as it was that bad and the second meal was just as disgusting- so I didn’t eat either! The older woman behind the bar was incredibly rude and ignorant, she actually bullied the young girl and spoke to her like she was a bit of dirt. The young girl was kind and helpful - unlike the older woman. Whoever owns this pub should genuinely be embarrassed and should just shut the doors.

Booked in for an Itison overnight stay which included full breakfast, chocolates and a welcome drink. From the minute we walked through the front doors of the hotel we felt so at home - the staff are wonderful - nothing too much bother and make you so welcome. Room - lovely boutique style with an amazing bathroom and great shower. Bar - dog friendly with a warming fire in the hearth. Good choice of drinks and cocktails. Some places you go to you feel a bit of an outsider especially if it is a small village. This place is the opposite - as it is community run the staff and locals actually care about the service and impression they give to visitors. Restaurant - a lovely set out room - tables not too close together. Ask for a table overlooking the countryside - the views are amazing ! Not a huge menu but something to cater for all tastes. I was especially impressed that you can get a smaller portion of some meals. I had the smaller steak pie, potatoes and veg and it was more than ample for me. My hubby had the beef burger which he said was really tasty. We finished off with the cheeseboard for one - when it came I told the waitress we only wanted to share and didn’t want the cheeseboard for two - she said “ that is the board for one” - wow what an amount and choice - brilliant value ! Would definitely recommend the Black Bull, Gartmore !

We have booked all of the rooms in the hotel for family for our wedding this summer, so I decided to surprise my fiance with an overnight for his birthday in December to try out what the Bull offered! I grew up in the village, but haven’t lived there for well over 30 years, The Bull to me was somewhere I passed as a kid but had never been in! It features in an episode of Taggart (“Compensation”) where the rooms look tired and really dated……..my goodness what a transformation there has been since then! The rooms are large, beds are enormous (and comfy), and even though you are upstairs from the bar I could hear absolutely no noise at all, so much so that in the morning when we saw other guests at breakfast we were quite surprised as with it being December, we thought we were the only ones staying! As it was my fiance’s birthday, I had booked us dinner, he had steak and I had beef bourginon……….oh, my, God……..what a plateful! Absolutely delicious food and beautifully presented. I had a couple of cocktails which were good too ;-) The only thing that felt a bit uncomfortable was that we were the ONLY customers eating in the restaurant (which was beautifully done up for Christmas, so homely). There was no atmosphere and I felt a little bit guilty about having a chef and a waitress working for what seemed to be just us :-( The meal wasnt cheap, but it was worth the money for a birthday treat. We would have been just as comfortable eating our food in the bar, probably more so rather than taking up the whole restaurant just for us. Breakfast, wow! Several other guests finishing theirs as we went down so that was nice to see. I always worry about small and local businesses and their recovery after COVID, Gartmore is a bit off the beaten track and has already lost its community run village shop recently. Anyway, I digress! Breakfast, wow! So much delicious food (which you select the night before so it is ready for you when you come down at your chosen time) it barely all fit on the table! Cooked to perfection, delicious coffee too ;-) All in all, I highly recommend The Bull for a wee overnight stay, so many lovely walks around the village and surrounding areas, a great wee place to base yourself. Really looking forward to our wedding in July now knowing my guests are in very safe hands!

I have visited the restaurant here on several occasions over a number of years as our group always have a ceilidh here. Initially I thought it was excellent with a varied menu excellent food with vegetables served separately. Sadly I find that on every occasion it has been poorer than the last and I thought this was our worst group meal this year. We always pre order to make things easier. Either the standards have slipped or they take us for granted. I had a roast beef and Yorkshire pudding with vegetables served on the plate. It looked ok but was over cooked in all aspects and I didn’t enjoy it. Those who had the steak pie were much happier with their choice and there were also positive comments about the deserts. Previously it had been possible to order drinks at the table or at a bar in the restaurant area but on this occasion when we wanted another drink we had to walk down a corridor past the kitchens to the main bar. Not good enough. Much as I enjoy the company of friends I wouldn’t eat here again. We had a group lunch the following day in another restaurant and service and food was infinitely superior,

Went here on the off chance when looking for somewhere for an evening meal. Was hesitant having read some of the reviews but was very pleasantly surprised. Worth a visit if you're looking for somewhere relatively inexpensive. Our host for the evening was very accommodating.

Staff and service were first class. Not a huge menu to choose from, I had fish and chips which was tasty, but was costly at nearly £11.00. I had Eton mess, which looked amazing but had no cream. Had fresh berries with a fruit sauce and broken meringue, tasted lovely, but I missed the fresh cream.

We were staying a few miles away on a campsite and upon checking in were told this pub did a free shuttle from the site so decided we would give it as go as lady at site said food was very good. Picked up on time (they do a 7.10 and 8.10 pick up) by a friendly chap and dropped at the pub, decided to eat in the restuarant and was taken through by another lovely man and left to peruse the menu after he took our drinks order. Food was very very good, my husband actually said it was the best meal he had whilst on our trip ( and we had eaten out lots) he choose the chicken in a mushroom and bacon sauce and I had the rib eye steak, and we both followed with chocolate sponge and cream which sounds very basic but was very good. We then had coffee and a couple of whiskys in the bar whilst watching rugby with the locals, who again were a lovely friendly and then we were dropped back at the site. Don't miss if your in the area.

As soon as I walked in I thought....urgh. It was so dark and dingy. The decor was just awful, horrible colours and a horrible manky carpet - yuk.Singled glazed windows, cheap and tacky curtains. However the food was ok. Prices ok. Was just like the food I cook at home, acceptable but nothing special. Took a long time to arrive though - at least 30-40 mins. staff were friendly but the waiter was trying to be funny and it was a bit cringy as he kept trying and failing to make us laugh.

We went on a Friday so it was going to be a bit of a wait because we hadn't booked a table but the staff were very friendly and made sure we were kept updated, the people in the bar were all very friendly and you didn't feel how you might in some pubs where it looks like the locals want you gone!Very good prices and the food was delicious, we both had food off the specials board and it was gorgeous! Will definitely go again if in the area.

We are visiting from Australia and staying in Gartmore. This is our 2nd meal here. First one was with small grandchildren, second with friends. Both meals have been very nice with lovely, helpful staff who couldn't do more for you. Our second meal there was a special board and we took the waiters advice and chose from there. The food was delicious! We were tempted with dessert and this was also very nice and fresh. Only disappointment was the pancakes were a bit on the burnt side, but not bad enough to complain after such a nice meal.

From walking in the door we were made welcome not only by the staff but also the people drinking in the bar! The restaurant wasn't the biggest but we were able to get a table for four with ease on a Tuesday evening in July. As well,as a few items in the specials board there was a good menu. The mains a sweets we chose was excellent and very nicely presented. The chef introduced herself at the end of the meal which was nice. The prices were very reasonable and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Wonderful atmosphere in this pub which is only a 5 minute walk from Gartmore BnB. I had the roast pork with mash and veggies which was really outstanding. Washed down with copious quantities of Old Speckled Hen. Lovely menu and great variety of beers, wines and spirits.

Heard about this pub from a friend and thought we would give it a try ... Well all I can say is what a wee Jewel in the crown xxxx lovely happy helpful staff cosy log fire and comfortable surroundings . The meal was the highlight of the night the most accommodating gluten free menu I've had made available to me since my diagnosis eight years ago. They deserve top marks on absolutely everything can't wait to return well done for everything xxxxxxx

Went to pick up the wife who was staying here a couple of nights for a writing retreat and decided to have a meal with the kids before leaving. Could not be more impressed. Owner and staff were super friendly and really accommodating around kids wishes and needs. Had great food (Scallop starter and Chicken main) which was tasty and well portioned. Definitely recommend this place if you are around this neck of the wood.

Called in for an evening meal and it was absolutely brilliant. We 'pushed the boat out' and had 3 courses (Special evening meal - 2 courses for £11.50p) Every course was brilliant. We could not fault any part of it. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Would highly recommend and would call in again

We had no expectations when visiting this Hotel for a pub meal when staying in the tiny village of Gartmore. However, we were pleasantly surprised. We sat in the bar which was basic but had a roaring open fire and warm welcome. The menu offered an excellent choice - my family chose steak pie and burgers, whilst I chose sea bass, all of which were delicious and well cooked. I cannot comment on accommodation, but for a good value pub meal this is a good bet.

We were in Aberfoyle for 3 days and found this place through a 10% discount flyer at Liz McGregor's cafe on Main Street. Gartmore is off the beaten track but well worth the detour. This was restaurant food at its best yet at pub grub prices. Lovely atmosphere. We enjoyed it so much we went back all three nights! and during the daytime we were regulars at Liz McGregors cafe (try the lemon cake...) - she runs them both and deserves a Michelin star

Good fresh food and very reasonably priced. Pleasant efficient service in congenial surroundings. We were served in a small room to the left on entering which gave a cosy atmosphere on a wet night.

The Black Bull was handy when we were staying in a B&B in Gartmore as somewhere to get an evening meal. We were delighted to find the food was excellent & reasonably priced. The ambiance of the pub could have been a little better but the food & service was so good this did not matter.

Our waitress from Glasgow was a gem. Our family enjoyed her stopping by as she made the visit personable. Food was good with a Scottish beer to pair. Big local crowd so popular.

A self serve café within the grounds of Stirling Castle, offering takeaway or sit-in opportunities. There are plenty of snack options, including a Kid’s Box at £6 which provides a choice of sandwiches, a treat, a piece of fruit and a drink. There are plenty of sandwiches and paninis for adults too and several hot dishes to choose from on display. In our experience there were plenty of staff on duty and the constant queue at the time was kept moving fairly quickly. We found a table in an area with vaulted ceilings, reminiscent of the Castle Kitchens, which added to the ambiance. The grandchildren had Kid’s Boxes, my wife and I had paninis which had tasty fillings, and we also had Americano coffees. The coffee was good enough to warrant a second cup for my wife and I along with a slice of lemon drizzle cake and a scone with cream and jam. All the food and drinks were good and the overall cost was just under £49 allowing for 10% discount as members of Historic Scotland. Toilets were clean but very compact for the size of the premises.
