This wasn't our first visit so was surprised it had Been taken over and sadly the food standards for us had dropped the staff were friendly enough and their was a few people in the place was clean and fresh which is good it's just ashame the food let it down their not enough choice on the main menu but the special board was selling well we just didn't find anything we liked on it so sadly had to pick from a few things on the menu their are to many lovely food places to go in the area so we will not be calling again but wish the new management all the best

I find it difficult to believe that the pub we went to is the same one referred to in these wonderful reviews. I lacked any atmosphere at all, There were about 6 people in the bar area and one female behind the bar with one appering now and then, i irdered steak pudding off a grimey menu and waited anout half an hour. When it appeared it comprised dried up peas and a steak pudding with the consistency of MDF . It was the worst "meal" I have ever encountered, Avoid it at all costs!

We visited last week and was lovely food and lovely staff but visited this week and it’s different staff but the same chef first off everytime I went to the bar the chef was on his phone WHILST cooking peoples food! So that is a big no to food hygiene, ordered 4 meals both steaks were over cooked and my fiancé found 2-3 hairs in his food brushed them off then found another 3-4 hairs and had to take back as it’s unacceptable and find it a coincidence how one of the barmaids is called levi and is an ex girlfriend of my fiancés ex and he found approx 7 hairs in just his food no one else and his food plate was the last to come out and never saw a smile to her face needs to learn about customer service as I’m a manager in a pub myself so I know the standards of food and customer service should come to as the other barmaid was lovely with polite manners, thought this was our new favourite local but now we won’t be returning again big let down.

Sunday lunch was really good, hot food, home made Yorkshire puds (not too bad) and very nice roast beef. The plates were large and portions very generous and prices were reasonable. The only thing that spoiled the experience was that the TV was playing the match, it was very loud. Too loud for us to have a conversation, or we may have stayed a little longer for another drink. There were more people eating dinner than watching the football, so maybe this should be considered more, shame as the food was very enjoyable.

As I was in the area and had some time to use up while waiting about I decided to give this pub a try.Inside it was well presented and comfortable with a friendly crowd and pleasant staff. There was a good selection of beers/lagers etc and it looks like it is very sporty at weekends or when major matches are on.Overall it was a good impression as I pass here many times and now had the opportunity to call in. There are many places I pass as I travel the country but cannot visit them all, but I am glad that I have identified what this place is.It will definitely be worth visiting when passing if I have the time.

Originally did not go in for lunch as we were confused by the extensive Indian menu and no other options but after eating lunch across the road came in for a drink. My husband had a nice pint of a blonde beer, something sunset he says ha. I had a cup of tea and was impressed even though there was only one person behind the bar and a few people to serve, he went to the trouble of serving the tea at the table on a tray in a teapot with milk jug etc., decent cup of tea too for one who is very fussy. The staff and locals were very friendly and polite and engaged us in conversation. Lovely local pub, will definitely return and worked out whilst in there they possibly have an Indian chef and that is why they have the Indian menu and offer a take out service too for the community. Excellent idea.

My first time ever eating at The Black Bull, whilst I've been a customer for quite some time. I had the Singapori Chicken with rice and beer. Simple, right?Firstly, epic taste, just EPIC. Everything cooked to perfection, hot and presented delightfully. Spices and chilies give you something to think about but balanced beautifully. Then you get to the Chicken. How on this God's earth do you make chicken melt in your mouth like chocolate? I'm sure Ali, the charismatic head chef, will take that to his grave. And Okra? I've had Okra before as a main meal accompaniment but in a curry? I've learned something new today, Okre is utterly delicious in a curry. And you taste it too, like all the ingredients, you taste every one - gotta be fresh. The pub itself is friendly with attentive staff. Prices are very competitive but the food, oh, the food is just outstanding. Going to be eating here again and again. Highly recommended. Five stars just isn't enough.

The curry house we normally visit had closed down, so the Black Bull was a shot in the dark.In an ordinary pub with an Indian chef, the food was extremely good. The service was friendly and efficient. The chef came to check that everything was OK.When I paid the bill, I was astonished to find how reasonable the price was - a third of the curry house price!

With so many pubs closing every week it says something that somewhere as small as Great Eccleston (alright, it's not as small as neighbouring Little Eccleston!) still boasts two similar sounding ones (The Black Bull and The White Bull) almost opposite each other on its high street (or its "Square").Diversity is the name of the game and we'd heard good things about the BB's homemade pizzas and it's its extensive Indian food menu - not to mention its well kept real ale selection.Having been disappointed by an over priced and non too friendly nearby "proper" Indian restaurant we decided to give the BB a whirl and we were extremely satisfied with what we got.Somehow it combines being a local pub (though it has had a makeover) with serving much better than average food at very decent prices. The service is friendly - even for non locals - though early doors parking can be a problem - especially when there's a rush for the takeaway service. The well kept real ales come in at around £3.20 a pint which means a beer, a large wine and two substantial main courses with sides and extras will only set you back around £30. Excellent value for the quality on offer. There's weekend karaoke too - though that should probably be curryoke in this pub?

From the moment you enter to the moment you leave, this quintessential British pub just amazes. The staff notice you immediately, give you a warm welcome then leave you to make up your mind. An excellent selection of popular and CMRA beers served with a smile. The place is deceptively huge, with both lounge and 'local' area with a quality pool table and a good space for darts. Down to earth staff that couldn't care less what you're wearing, they just want you to feel welcome. Chris, the boss, is always out drinking tea with his customers, always keen to listen. Then you have the live entertainment every week, and the 'preference-based' opening hours, the large car park and heated smoking area. And if that wasn't enough to make this pub head and shoulders above the competition, you can get a quality curry or a selection of restaurant quality indian food from an award winning chef. Sit in or take away.It just doesn't get any better than this. Take whatever detour you need to take to visit this outstanding establishment.I struggle to believe that this place is in a tiny village called Great Eccleston instead of the center of Manchester or London.

Had an Indian meal at the Black Bull Great Eccleston on show Saturday. The young lady who served us with drinks and menus etc was very attentive. We didn't have long to wait until we got our starters which were fine. We were just taking in he atmosphere and watching all that was going on around us so didn't notice the time going by. However our waitress must have noticed and came across to the table to check if where we were with our meal. When we said we hadn't had our main course she said she would hurry it along. We received it soon afterwards and enjoyed it, and were quite happy. When it came to the time to pay the bill we were advised that as we had had so long to wait that the cost of the starters were on the house. Excellent customer service thank you!

To be blunt the pub is not a looker, inside is OK but nothing special. So why did we try it when this pub had had so many attempts at revival? Heard in the village that local guy of Asian extraction had taken on the restaurant and there were good reports of the quality of the food. When we went they were only serving food in the main pub but there is a separate dining room upstairs which judging on our experience will need to be open more often if they can keep up the current standard of food. We started with the classic papadoms. As crisp as any we have ever had and clearly freshly heated. The pickles were the only disappointment of the meal. Only 3 choices, none of my favourite lime pickle and the mango chutney was of poor quality. The main dishes were very much English Indian fare but the way they were cooked put them way above most "Indians". The small salad with the main meal was a surprise as was fresh and crisp, but for me it should not have been on the plate for the main meal. I prefer salad to be on a side plate. Shows how good the food as I am commenting on presentation of the salad. If you want a good Indian then give this place a try for it is as good as anywhere in Poulton where they have two good Indian restaurants.

I live in Great Eccleston and in the last week we now have become lucky enough to have access to an Indian Restaurant/Take Away. Unlike most this is located in the Black Bull public house situated in the village square. Outwardly this has the appearance of a pub but the upstairs is now an Indian Restaurant that offers a Take Away menu. After receiving many recommendations I decided to try the Take Away food this evening. I telephoned an order of Chicken Tikka Masala and Vegetable Passanda. Collected twenty minutes later and served with the food by the Indian chef himself a smart friendly guy. Went home and we were treated to one of the best Indian meals we have had anywhere in the country. Can't believe our luck that we have such a little gem only a few minutes walk from our home. Gives the village another great place to eat where we will be sampling again soon, but this next time in the restaurant. Don't be put off by the location being above the pub it is a genuine Indian serving fabulous freshly made food. The extra bonus is that all meals, starters and sides are reasonably priced and take aways are offered at 20% off the menu prices!!!

Visited on 21st March 2015. My wife and I ordered from the sandwich section on the menu. It was 14.55. We explained to the bar staff that we needed the food quickly as we had to leave at 15.30. We sat down and waited, and waited. People that ordered hot food after us were being served there food, and still no sign of our food! At 15.25 I asked the Scottish chap who was bringing food out when we will get our food as we need to leave? He said "bare with us because the barmaid is new, we can only do so much, or you can have your money back" in an abrupt and ignorant manner. We was shocked by this. We got our food at 15.35, this was another surprise! It was described on the menu as being on bloomer bread, it was actually on a cheep bread, looking a complete mess(see picture). Therefore the product was not as described on the menu!

Dropped in on a Saturday evening to try somewhere different (we live on the Fylde coast) for an evening meal. I had already checked out the mixed reviews via TripAdvisor and was keeping my fingers crossed. However things didn't look to promising when we arrived at 7.30pm to find the pub almost deserted. Anyway after checking out the decent offerings of Real ales I was convinced to stay. A quick glance of the menu (there was not much choice from the standard pub grub offered) and remembering a recommend from Trip Adviser for the 'Whale of a Fish' and chips, I alighted to the bar to place my double order. Duly done I returned to my wife briskly followed by a member of staff who informed us that "there's no fish!". No apology just a repeat of "there's no fish"! Silly me hadn't realised that the pub stops serving food at 8pm and this was 7.45pm. The fish must have been popular with the 3 or 4 other faces in the pub..... A hasty choice of Scampi and a Lasagne was ordered followed by a comedic farce to obtain my £3 difference in the food payment. My fault again as I'd paid by card. Sorry. Our food arrived a few minutes later and on seeing my plate my wife enquired if I had asked for a childs portion? Now I'm not a big eater but 10 pieces of Scampi, a scattering of shredded lettuce and 1/2 a small tomato plus peas and a few chips, the majority of which I'm sure came out of the freezer moments before, was not going to satisfy even my paltry appetite. As for the lasagne, microwaved to an inch of its life. All edible but that's the only positive thing I can say about the food. The waitress collected our plates and I was waiting for the usual "Was everything OK for you?" that one usually receives after eating out and I had my reply ready. But no, nothing. Perhaps the staff know they are serving less than standard pub grub and are somewhat embarrassed? If not they should be! The beer was nice though.

After a day out in Blackpool decided to travel back to Sheffield a different way and came across a lovely village, Great Eccleston which was just ten minutes away from Blackpool and on the route back home. We fancied something to eat and after deliberating our options the menu at The Black Bull was appealing and reasonably priced. We chose the "Whale of a Fish" and the "Lancashire Ham" and we were in for a surprise. The fish in beer batter just melted in your mouth and what a size! and as for the ham very succulent!. As for traditional English food this has to be the best we have ever had and to top it all the ambience of this pub/ restaurant was very welcoming and with the food being excellent finding this place was like finding a four leaf clover. No staff wearing gloves whilst handling meat and vegetarian options or anything in the kitchen for that matter. Share one fryer for meat and hash browns which are supposed to be vegetarian. Lady who handled food at the end just winged it into the hot hold as if it was rubbish. No wonder the hygiene rating isn’t on display.

We went for a large family meal 12+ people reserved. When we arrived they had run out of carvery knowing they had a reservation so we made due but when ordering we where also told they had ran out or steaks for the mix grill. We made due yet again but the food was cold and bland only redeeming quality was the outside area for are party. I will also add when paying the card machine automatically asks for a tip before you have even tasted your food or had service min options being 15%.
