Saff was very helpful and friendly

Nice friendly staff but their food has gone down hill was cold in middle and got my order wrong. Used to go their alot more but last 3 times we went food wasn't good. Apart from that everything else was great staff

It’s a local pub, it’s not a gastro experience. It’s just easy to turn up and meet some friends and have a few drinks, the kids can play in the great outdoor area. Sometimes some live music is entertained in the back, and there’s usually some football to watch. They have a normal selection of drinks to satisfy. It’s close to the park so nice to end a walk there.

Had our after wedding party here and it was fantastic. The food was ace, they did decorations and staff were friendly and lovely! Thank you so much for everything! Kim and Jason

Overpriced...charge 50p for soda water...what a rip off! I'm sorry whoever responded with the defence...here's a reality check. 1 charging 50p for soda water is bordering on illegal...it is illegal to charge for tap water...and all you are doing is adding bubbles to your tap water at the post mix head...( I used to work for Britvic) 2 you are the only pub in Chelmsford to specifically charge 50p for soda water...I am a recovering alcoholic I only ever drink soft drinks and I've been that way for close to 12 yrs. 3 not only was the soda 50p...the attitude of the server was in my opinion unnecessarily off hand....blondie is bar staff not in an episode of Towie...behave accordingly! 4 there appears to be a preferred type there...if u don't look it or dress it..you get "attitude"....and that attitude has come from multiple visits over time. 5 in conclusion 50p for soda water is not good value....it is bordering on illegal...show me the evidence of your sort called value cause it's lost on me..and I've done 40yrs sales, marketing and customer service management...I think I understand value!

Had a weird experience... ordered for a pulled pork burger, and the waiter came back to say they had run out of pork. Asked me if I want chilli instead of pork. I clarified again, and she said the same..never knew chilli is a replacement for meat. Ordered a club burger instead, which turned out to be the worst burger ever had in a pub. Loved the kids' area as my little one had one while we were relaxing.

Lovely location near the park, very good atmosphere and friendly staff, easy parking, the outside space is great and the inside is very well presented. Family pub highly recommended.

Friendly family orientated pub, Dog friendly, good food and well appointed function area. Good size beef garden. Recommended.

We had our son’s 1st birthday party at the Black Bull yesterday and it was brilliant. Everyone had the best time and said how fabulous the venue was with the soft play set up. The personalised banners were very unexpected but were amazing, lovely food and staff were all so friendly and helpful. Thank you so much again, we will definitely be back!

Great pub with a good atmosphere and friendly staff

Poor quality food. Made worse by the moody blonde bar girl who couldn’t crack a smile for anyone. The play equipment was good for the kids tho.. it has potential apart from the food and staff..

Absolutely shocking place, staff are rude & don’t live up to there word. Getting customers to place bets for the Euros without explaining the rules, and then refusing to pay when the bet is settled, even though a staff member came out to the garden (in front of myself & many others) and TOLD us we won. Will never return or recommend to others. Avoid at all costs, doesn’t even deserve 1 star.

Had my partners party what a venue love this place! Tamsin & team could not do enough for us great food/buffet our guest loved the atmosphere an all round stress free night! Thanks for putting up the decorations they looked great! Will be back for our next celebration! Xxx Topnotch!

Good location for circular walk, nearby free car park with access to local park. Bull car park reasonable size off main road. Interior is OK, not spacious, not busy on day we visited. Television speakers little intrusive. Compact bar with one bar person, friendly, competent and welcoming. Order food at bar. Decent menu, good choice. Thursday half price on mains great value so earned 4 stars for that offer. Good well cooked tasty portions. Drinks not expensive, lunchtime, so mainly soft.

First trip great, second trip with my wife I hot ripped off 1 pint of beer and half a bitter shandy charged the price of two pints. As I don't like being ripped off I will never go back. There are plenty of great reliable pubs in chelmsford to go to instead. No point in getting upset on site, just nit worth it.

A massive thank you to Black Bull Chelmsford for helping us celebrate our mum and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary to say they were surprised was an understatement. Thank you to Rachel and staff for helping setting up last min and making the place look amazing and to my sis (who is one of the staff too) for the cake, buffet, decorations and being an all round superstar ⭐️ everything was way above what we ever expected. Awesome night thank you again x

Large no frills pub with a function area for live acts and playing Pool. Good selection of beers and a veggie burger available on the menu. We come to see Park Drive play 🎵

From my experience - all other pubs I spent time in were better. The young girl at the bar was not very knowledgeable and very much unappealing. The door from the bar to the beer garden was unusable, so it was necessary to go around the building. The restroom was clean, but the water pressure from the tap was too high and water was bursting everywhere when washing my hands. Will avoid in the future.

First visit today. Found the staff very friendly and the homemade vegetable soup enjoyable. Joined a very friendly bunch of ladies and gent for a few games of bingo, so a pleasant couple of hours out, even though I didn't win. Thank you

What a brilliant venue for a function! This past weekend we hired the function area of the pub for a surprise baby shower for my sister and we cannot fault the pub in the slightest!! They went above and beyond in decorating the area to look incredible! The food was a buffet and they catered amazingly for the vegan and gluten free attendees which was definitely appreciated! The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly throughout and made us feel extremely welcomed there! The pub was clean, and the food was fresh and perfect for what we asked for! Literally cannot fault the Black bull pub at all! Perfect venue for any function!

My sisters organised a surprise baby shower for me at the Black Bull. It was the best day! We were in a separate part of the pub so felt like we had our own space. The pub was clean and tidy and the bathroom was too. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and it felt very homely! We had a buffet which was fresh and seperate needs catered for (vegan and gluten free). I would 100% recommend this venue for any party/function!

My family and I held my mums wake at the Black Bull Pub. First off I want to say a massive thank you to Rachel who knew my mum offered kindly to hold the wake free of charge and included an amazing buffet. This was a massive help and really kind. The atmosphere was great and the staff couldn’t be happier to help. This was a massive relief for me and my family To share this awful day in a place where she enjoyed and held good past times for her. Thank you so much Rachel, I’m sure you are sick of hearing this but we are so grateful. Donna’s family x

Staff were accommodating to me and my party of wanting a table reserved for a game night, the drinks were good and the food was also good, a very nice and jolly atmosphere.

We had my sons christening here. We provided the decorations in which I dropped of the day before and the locker manager set it all up for me so once the church service was done we walked in and oh my she did a fab job!! It looked so beautiful the food layout was delicious so much variety the atmosphere where was. It was lovely that it was sectioned off from the main bit so we wasn’t bothering the locals to much. The bar staff where quick to serve and super friendly. The venue hire is FREE !!! We had to pay £50 deposit to secure the date and paid the rest on the day which was for the food per head which was around £9.50, I would definitely recommend this lovely little pub for any venue hire, There is a bit outside for children to play in unfortunately the slide had been broken so wasn’t much for the children to do apart from Climb up and down the climbing frame but this will soon be fixed. We had the best time so thank you so much. To you and your wonderful friendly team.

Popped in the Black Bull Pub on for a drink and received warm welcome from the young lady, on my own so we had a little chat, which was nice. The front bar look like a sports bar with large TV showing sports and a pool table. Could do with a little make over. Outside the is a garden full of seating and a play area for the children. Dogs welcome. Have speaker in the garden playing music, while I was there nice selection. They have events on, open mic, clairvoyant, etc There is a car park to the right but bring your small car, little on the small side. Service a couple of real ales, the one I choose, sorry forgot which was £4.90 a pint.

Not impressed - ordered a diet coke along with other drinks and at best it was water with a black colouring tasting nothing like cola..... Otherwise it's a nice pub!

Always a Great pub to go to. Lovely food..lively music. Parties at certain times of the year. It also has its own play apparatus. Brilliant location as Admirals park is opposite.

The pub was very quiet and friendly They allow dogs inside and outside of the pub as long as they are on leads. The service was good and was quick. The pub was playing music, mainly old classics inside and outside in the garden area. There was ample seating, and the food was reasonable. The pub is slightly dated. However, all in all, it was a pleasant experience.

Saturday was the 1st time we visited the Black Bull. The atmosphere was lovely. We had a meal & a few drinks. The meal was lovely. Food was hot, good portion size & well presented. Staff were welcoming. The beer garden was spacious. Very family friendly. Definitely will be visiting again.

Held my other halves surprise party here, all of the team were amazing, nothing was ever too much hassle, the room was decorated for us ready, buffet was superb and very well priced. Staff on the night were very assertive and we was never left waiting for a drink, spot on 👍🏼

We had my husband’s wake here last night and I must say that everything was really great. The food was amazing and there was plenty of it. The staff were very attentive and helpful. I would highly recommend using this pub if you were planning a special function.

My friends and family organised a surprise 40th party for me in the function room at the Black Bull and it was an amazing night. I cannot praise the staff enough for all they did - the lights, the decorations, the food! They were so friendly and welcoming and did everything they could to ensure that myself and all my guests had the best night. I cannot recommend the Black Bull highly enough - they have everything you need for a party and I would definitely use them again. Thank you so much!

Food and service were good. The evening we attended a Carol service was being held in the pub and very enjoyable it was.

A very good local which serves well kept ales and good pub grub. The Bull also holds excellent events most weeks and some very good children's events. Since this visit alterations have been made inside. Lovely decor and still a great ambience.

Nice pub and quite spacious. Not impressed by an obvious local who thought it fine to talk over my shoulder to pay their bill as I was waiting in a queue to be served (and staff obliging him). Will try again to see if this was a one off experience. Otherwise enjoyed our visit. Beer prices are at the expensive end for an out of town centre pub.

The pub does some good food and the owners do there upmost to make it a welcoming place in general its a great place with a good atmosphere , that was sadly spoiled by the local shameless family and there friends who spoiiled it for everyone sadly.

Just been to the Black Bull for Dinner Thursday Night is half price meals and it was amazing Hunters Chicken with steak cut chips and salad hubby had Scampi Chips massive plate full £4 per meal amazing

Came in front entrance person behind bar said that I needed to sit down and give my order at my table. Sat there for 30 minutes waiting for service at table. No one came to take my order.....so I left and went somewhere else.
