Tried to buy a pint here more than once and no one could be bothered to serve us. Seemed like outsiders are not welcome

I walked into almost empty pub to find the land lady and a handful of large men sat around together having a private party. I politely asked if they served food and was advised that they don’t by the lady. Then I was advised by one of the large men that they don’t do prostitution either, followed by a roar of laughter by the rest of the welcoming committee. - The only empty pub on the street - terrible ‘jokes’ - poor choice of welcoming committee from the land lady - maybe a closed sign would be less misleading than an open door.

I was saved by checking reviews. No traditional beer. What in earth is the point of an English pub which doesn't provide traditional English beer? Why turn away custom?

The Black Bull is a traditional pub in the centre of Cockermouth. We called in a couple of times during a short stay and were made very welcome by the landlady and locals. Good selections of drinks, including at least one draught ale, and reasonable prices. Clean, comfortable and spacious, it's one of the few pubs in Cockermouth open at the beginning of the week.

Having been in a couple of the more trendy bars in town, the Black Bull was refreshingly ordinary. Perhaps it was because live football was on telly, but it seemed like a real “lads” pub - and fortunately my wife didn’t mind. Old fashioned decor; no real ales; but decent service and relaxing atmosphere. Not the best pub in town, but perfectly fine.

Here’s a summary of my very brief visit to the Black Bull: It’s 4pm on a Friday, baking hot outside, the place is deserted... Me (to barmaid, who is on her mobile): Could I have an alcohol free beer, like a Becks Blue? Barmaid (still on her mobile): We don’t serve alcohol free beer. I leave and go elsewhere.

Restaurant prices in Kewswick have gone sky high since the pandemic, with even pubs charging £20 for lunch, so I decided tp try The Chief Justice for a meal. As this is a Wetherspoons, it's national pricing, so is considerably cheaper than most other places iin Keswick, and beer prices are half what you'd pay in other pubs., with a large range of real ales for £3-4 a pint. The caveat is the food is nothing special: I bought an 11 inch pizza that was OK, but for £11 you don't expect a gourmet experience. One thing I did like was The Chief Justice was a former police station and magistrates court and many of the original features have been retained. Also the pub was spotless and the staff friendly. Basically this is a middle of the road place to eat, but if you are on a budget in Keswick, I'd recommend this pub.

Have visited this cafe previously and had no complaints and had a good experience. Unfortunately when we visited today it was disappointing. We both had the Sunday Roast dinner we have had before on other occasions but this time it was lukewarm even the gravy and it was not enjoyable. The roast potato was watery and looked insipid, the mash potato watery and lumpy. The peas served were out of a tin and the meat which was turkey was cold. The person who served us at the till was not engaging and since we paid £27.45 for the two dinners I feel it was poor value and would be reluctant to go again.

Amazing find! Ate here last night after staying in Rosthwaite and having limited options as we had not booked anywhere in advance. We were greater by really friendly staff, a cosy informal atmosphere and a great menu. I am usually a bit dubious about pub fish and chippy, usually preferring to go to an actual chippy, but WOW! They were amazing! We were both really impressed. Great portions after a day walking in Borrowdale and so so tasty. Good range of beers on tap too.

Often call here but the service is becoming dreadful. Several of the staff dont seem to know the words please and thank you. Very little interaction with customers and not a welcoming place to be. Need to get a better attitude or customers will start going elsewhere.

Called for a quick good value daytime menu meal with my partner. The item I chose was out of stock but the replacement fish and chips was excellent. The staff are are very friendly and I am a regular here.
