I organised a Hen Party at the Black Bull last week which was a great success thanks to Paul & his team. An excellent value party evening with a good choice of menu options. A 3 course meal, party games, karaoke & disco included in the price. Great service throughout the evening & in planning the event. The pub provided a starlight backdrop curtain & additional decorative/ disco lights which transformed a basic traditional pub restaurant into a pretty party venue. Again at no additional cost. Reasonably priced Cocktails & Prosecco. All in all a highly recommended venue for smaller scale celebrations. Ours was a group of 15 for dinner with 6 additional guests joining us for drinks etc later in the evening. However, I understand the pub can cater for more. Many thanks to Paul & his team for a memorable evening.

Visited for Sunday lunch and chose the 2 courses offer - roast beef followed by banana and caramel Eton Mess for myself and Black Pudding starter and roast beef for my husband. The black pudding arrived very quickly and the poached egg on top was well cooked but the black pudding was cold but not worth mentioning. The roast beef dinners followed promptly with two very large lumps of beef, sadly a bit tough and overcooked, plenty of hot vegtables with a selection of cauliflower, broccoli, sugar snap peas, parsnips, heritage carrots and turnip(swede). The banana and caramel Eton Mess was certainly messy - served in a wine glass and although it looked rather unattractive tasted fresh but not very caramelly.

I live in Wylam and have eaten at The Black Bull often. Despite being a wealthy village, your options for good food here are limited. Of the available dining establishments, The Black Bull is okay. The food isn't expensive and is acceptable if you're prepared for a long wait.So that's about that. Nothing great, nothing bad. You won't come out feeling hungry or ripped off.Unless you take your kids...We ordered the 'tomato pasta' for our son and asked for it to be served as soon as it was ready. After almost an eternity of waiting with an energetic child we were presented with almost exactly that; some undercooked pasta, perhaps half a tin of chopped tomatoes seasoned with large chunks of cracked black pepper. Our son struggled to eat half of it but wolfed down a 35p half-tin of Ravioli when we got home.Yes there's a children's menu and that's a plus, but the five or six quid you pay for a kid's meal is not worth the 'experience' of dining out and waiting some 45 minutes for their meal.

My wife & I attended a friends celebration & as you do we checked TripAdvisor first. Reading some of the reports I am now wondering if we attended a different place to some of the contributors on here.I think first in this contribution has really got to be the staff. We eat out quite a lot & really do not eat at places guided by the price but we are very particular that the price meets the service & quality given. After many years in the catering business we class ourselves as being quite knowledgeable in the accounts we find ourselves in & have had some very good food in some outstanding venues & likewise had excellent food in many a family run venue where everybody strives to please with pride taken in everything. The Bull, what a disaster. The staff were untrained, hopeless & walked around with an attitude where they did not care a toss. They were all barely 16 & at any minute we were expecting the Dinner Monitor to appear. When approached by a young person who has only been taught how to carry two plates & does not know which side to serve to or which side to clear from life gets pretty hairy. I lost a stone off my ample frame dodging from side to side to avoid them. The room is very small & tables are seriously crammed in as to make every bit of use of all the available space. This results in people having to sit in long lines on wall seats resulting in food having to be served over the people in front of you. Out of our party everybody asked for gravy & this was served already on the plate. Needless to say there were quite a few accidents with spillage, usually over the person in front. Veg & potatoes were served separately but again with the roasties plated, When I realised that the mash I had asked for was not coming I asked one of the waiters who by that time had decided to clear dishes from those that had been served earlier although half of the table was still eating. My request resulted in a posse of 3 - 4 waiters followed by the chef standing at a distance observing the situation & shaking their heads in unison. Eventually I got the potatoes---when the rest of the party had almost completed their deserts. Yes the Staff & to that throw in the chef to make the numbers up. They were obviously untrained, lacked knowledge of the food & had to run through the back to get answers to questions, not a leader to show them where to go nor what to do, the pre ordered meal was chaos & the whole situation was very much like a training ground for comedians. The food was, well, terrible. The names on the Menu were maybe correct but the chef appears to match up the dish incorrectly with the offering. The Steak is good for 3 days, my wife took that long to chew hers, my fish must of travelled from Alaska, by canoe & it would only be fair to say that nobody in the party did not have a complaint of some kind. Within the party as well as my wife & I were 4 other ex caterers & all said that it would be better for the place to cut the number of covers to a manageable number for the comfort of the guests & so the waiters can personally serve them, Proper training given to the waiters & get a chef that is creative in his ideas not destructive in his thoughts & food preparation. Recently this has got to be given the worst experience that we have had & at price that is not value for the cost also beware they do not accept credit cards so you will need cash. Surrounded by such renowned home producers of food surely the chef can find a supplier of decent steak & fish that is not curling at the edges. For this restaurant to survive it is going to have to do a lot better than this especially in an area where real good eating can be found.

As this is my local bar and my regular place of choice, I was somewhat nervous to find out it had very suddenly been taken over by new management. I had visions of my cosy regular being turned into a neon signed wine bar, but soon after entering, the new owners coming up to greet each person and allayed all fears. I found out it now caters for a fish and chip takeaway menu - which is much needed in the village, especially for the older community who rely on a van once a week. It has plans to do monthly steak/curry/tapas nights, along with having days such as 'Breakfast with Santa'. The pub wants to engage the community and make it work for all and is eager to hear anyone's ideas. I know lots of people who travel miles for the food which is exceptional, and menus can be changed to cater for all tastes, gluten free etc. The pub will be making some changes, such as seen in the toilets, but all with keeping with the atmosphere of the pub. It has a new pool table on order and I am told that very soon we will be able to use our Visa cards, instead of needing cash. I wish the new management all the best and know this will be a successful venture

We were not too sure whether we would find the food we want, but decided to walk in and ask, as it suggests on the menu outside, after the vegetarian options available. The chef came out to talk us through what he could do for us - and somehow found exactly what I fancied (a dish that was cooked just as I like, with mushy aubergine and crunchy courgette). My partner had the most tender sirloin steak cooked to perfection - which is unusual - and a fantastic cheese cake. It took me almost 15 minutes to get served for one drink, the staff were more interested in chatting away to their friends on the other side of the bar which all seemed to be very young customers, it had a youth-club feel to it. The chef came out personally to check if all was to our liking which it was! Highly recommend a visit.

There are several televisions around the bar, which came in very useful, as the Ladies Singles Final at Wimbledon was on, the day I was there. Real ale was available too. There was no breakfast, but this was made clear when I booked the room. Overall, it was a great place to stay, at a budget price.

We enjoyed a great meal, good local beer, and some really sweet waiters at the Black Bull. The young men waiting on our table could not have been more attentive and nice! I recommend the Caesar salad with fried goat cheese... Delicious!!!

The Black Bull at Wylam is so friendly, the landlord is great, the beer prices really good, the local people are very sociable and the pub is heaving with people!. The rooms are very well priced as no breakfast but tea and coffee facilities in all rooms as well as fridge and microwave, so with Spar shop next door, breakfast no problem.

We had a very nice Sunday lunch here today, the roast beef and yorkshire pudding were excellent, if the veg was a bit overcooked. Pudding was good, and the place had a nice traditional feel to it. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the beer excellent.

I went here with my sister and our 4kids in tow for some lunch. We found a table and I asked for a highchair. They did not have a children's menu and said to just use the lightnings menu. When I asked for no onion with my sons tuna melt they said they couldn't do it. I had a curry which was nice but quite a.small portion. I ordered a small battered fish for my daughter but the batter was just like grease with no flavour. My sister ordered a blue steak and it arrived more medium. It was also lacking onion rings. When we asked for them they server didn't believe us that they came.with them.Won't be going again

Not quite the choice of others in the village, but a lovely, well maintained bar with a bit of character. Well worth a visit.

I've visited the Black Bull many times in the past, both for drinks and food, and have always found Paul and his staff very welcoming. This time we decided to book for lunch on Xmas day as a change from our usual yearly routine, and it did certainly not disappoint.New Head Chef Kim now looks after the restaurant side of the business, and is a credit to the Black Bull. He was extremely helpful in the build up to the day, providing a great and varied menu for us to choose from and was also very accommodating with prices relating to younger children in our party and my daughter who has food allergies. The standard of food and service from start to finish was excellent. Our party was quite large (15 including kids), so pretty much all menu options were sampled, and everyone was very happy with the quality of the food. Despite the size of our group, all meals arrived together, and piping hot, which I know sometimes can be a challenge! Thanks for a great day Kim & Paul, we'll be back for Sunday lunch soon. Highly recommended

Whilst visiting parents in Ryton we went to the Black Bull in Wylam as a group of six for a pre Xmas evening meal. We were welcomed by a very friendly, helpful and efficient young lady from Gloucestershire who looked after us a treat. She recommended the Xmas menu which we all had and everything was tasty, copious and really well cooked. The chef came out to say hello and the bar staff were also helpful friendly and efficient. Beers and wines were all good and well priced. A nice pub/restaurant with a warm and cosy Xmas ambience.

We were made very welcome by Paul & Julie,Our meal for 4 was delicious. We shared 2 starters, and our mains were steak, lamb shank, steak & ale pie, & salmon with noodles. All beautifully cooked & presented. Our server was super attentive, & nice to be able to thank chef Kim personally after our feast. Also, good to see a menu written in simple plain English, without the need for fancy, dan descriptions of each dish. A really lovely night out in a proper local pub. Thank you to all involved :-) ,,

Can't comment on the sunday roast, however, the only veggie option was a large bowl of penne with a fairly bland tomato sauce through it. It felt token and at £8.50 poor value.

We have eaten here 3 times since the new chef arrived. Each time we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Everything is obviously home made & made fresh to order. The scotch egg is the best I've ever tasted & the pie is very, very close to being the same - my wife has had it every time we've been! The deserts are old school and delicious, especially on a Sunday.

We arrived today for family Sunday lunch. After looking on trip advisor we thought the pub sounded nice.We booked in advance thinking they would be busy, the impression I got on the phone was just that.On arrival we entered into a room full of tables and chairs (obviously the restaurant) and 3 people standing talking amongst themselves. I was a bit confused as I felt we had come in the wrong door.Eventually the male acknowledged us and showed us our table. Before we had even sat,a blonde girl handed us menus and asked what we wanted to drink.1 had lemonade,1 a coke,1 a diet coke(which was full fat when it arrived). My partner asked what ales were on,the male went to check and at £2 a pint he wasn't complaining. The pate I chose as a starter needed the gelatine removed and some nice wholemeal type toast wouldn't have gone amiss, instead of cheap white sliced.my partner chose the black pudding which he said was strange swimming in gravy and the bacon was too salty.3 of us chose beef and 1 had pork. The portion was a good size. The veg came which was a mix crammed into a bowl and a bowl of what I assume was watery swede.(Reduce the veg portions and don't put it in such a deep bowl so you can see what you are eating.) The waiting service was absolutely shocking,I heard the male tell a customer he was training the staff(WOW),he needed training himself.I know we live in the northeast but being a bit more reserved would go in his favour. The blonde waitress was constantly checking her mobile. We didn't appreciate being called "guy's " 10 times during the meal wasn't good. I witnessed once again, the blonde girl stretch over a baby in a high chair with a pint which isn't good.My partner ordered dessert and when she put his cutlery down she held the fork by the prongs. The door going into the kitchen needs sorting,it only opens into the restaurant which having armfuls of dishes isn't easy. All I can say is the experience was disappointing, the service was shocking and the food was average. Oh YEAH!! Make sure you take plenty of cash with you. This restaurant doesn't take cards. We were informed the spar next door gives cash back. No,get a card machine. We won't be hurrying back

Loved it, would definitely go back. It was in the middle of nowhere but that's what I like. You can easily get a taxi to Hexham.

Very disappointed with my food there today. It was cold, the roast potatoes were clearly not fresh, I had to removes bits of food from the chairs before we could sit down and the high chair was filthy. Not given cutlery until we had to ask for it, made our concerns to 2 staff members and nothing done about it. So sad as have read some good reviews about the place😢

The portions were huge, they were very helpful the staff and so friendly to me and my family. They gave my small dog a water bowl too some treats. I would come here again if I came back to wooler.
