The Black Bull in Epping Forest

Generous serving and food pretty good. Service was like they were doing you a favour! In fact, faces like smacked a***ses!! Reminder, patrons are paying for the food AND service which needs much improvement. Wouldn't go back when there are so many nice pubs similarly priced in and around Fyfield and Ongar.

The pub is fine. Not bad but nothing special. Very bog-standard drinks on offer, no local ales at all. The food was OK, but old fashioned salty and covered up by serving big portions with loads of gravy. The room on the other hand… unbelievably bad for what they’re charging. It’s like staying in an old people’s home. Small dingy plain room. Cheap furnishings, lumpy mattress, horrible brown blankets in place of a duvet. Complete with some old guy moaning and groaning through the paper thin walls. I was actually shocked a place like this could still exist. They’ve made zero effort and I can’t believe anyone would ever stay here more than once!!

Had chicken roast today wife had beef roast , superb generous portions , pleasant waiting staff shared a tracle sponge pudding, £53 incl drinks , prob the best roast available for miles

I go out on a Sunday in search of the "Holy Grail" of Sunday roasts in London. This is my 9th visit to this lovely pub in Essex to remind me of what I am searching for in London! Great pub, great food and brilliant staff, the portions are big and the price is very low in comparison to what I pay in London.

Booked this as close to the Epping Santa train venue. Clean and comfortable room although not a lover of two single beds pushed together as a bit of an uncomfortable sleep. Nice friendly hosts and the pub was cosy and did home cooked food but we didn’t sample this although our taxi driver rated their food. Breakfast was really good , choice and top quality great value.

Yesterday was the first time I have been in the Bull for over forty years. In an age when the traditional British pub is becoming incredibly rare the Bull remains. Great pub, wonderful couple who run it and wonderful little hotel. Cannot recommend it enough. If you love a traditional pub then ensure you visit

Booked overnight accommodation to attend a family wedding nearby. Reasonable room rate & staff were friendly & helpful over the phone. Arrived, ready, other than our outfits, at 1pm on the day of the wedding & only had time to quickly change & jump into a taxi 15 minutes later at 1.15pm. On first glance the room looked fairly basic & the towels looked dingy but being in a hurry we didn't have time to look properly. Returned 11.45pm, tired & needing to sleep so went straight to bed. Woke in the morning & immediately began to see the room & bathroom in daylight. We aren't excessively fussy travellers but after looking at the shower we decided not use it. The toilet was a bit grime. Everything was grubby & grimy & there was a lot of dirt & dust almost everywhere in the room. We also had a number of very large spiders that seemed to be living happily in there. The mattress protector was heavily stained... We didn't dare look at the pillows. Continental breakfast was included in our toom rate but we didn't feel that we wanted to eat after our experience with the lack of cleanliness in our room. I asked to speak to the manager, showed photos & she offered a refund, although made absolutely no comment on what I'd photographed nor any apology for the state of the room. The only comment made was that she can't do anything about spiders getting in overnight. Those spiders didn't creep in overnight.. Being right at the edge of the road there were no windows opened overnight & it was obvious they'd had happily set up home in the dirt & dust & had created large webs. The pub part of the Black Bull Inn & the garden looked quaint & really nice even though we didn't use it but the cleaners need to be replaced...

The pub itself is lovely and the food is fabulous. Could do with reducing portion size to reduce costs as there was too much and averaged £15-£25 for evening meals/roast. The rooms need a real good clean particularly the window frames and wet room. The bed was comfortable. Stained curtains and bedding though. Surprised the bar closed so early in the evening even to residents. The landlady was lovely and very accommodating when our friends were going to arrive after they shut in the afternoon. Lovely continental breakfast although the full English was good value at £7.50 with tasty produce.

Accommodation was very basic. Small room with a toilet/shower. All needed to be freshened up. Sunday meal was good with a plate full. Complimentary breakfast was ok. Full English extra.

Very Friendly , great for a one night stay, good value, wonderful cooked breakfast. Hotel room was basic but for the price it was fine. Plenty of tea coffee available in the room. My only criticism would be the bathroom (wet room) needs a power wash to get rid of some grotty areas , but overall a nice stay ....

July 23. Booked 2 night stay as attending wedding locally. Good range of food on menu. Free continental breakfast. Extra charge for full breakfast but more than quoted when booking. Initial impression on room was small but adequate. Didn't like adjoining room and would not have booked it if know. We were woken by people in next room both mornings. Bathroom...had walk in shower but needed a good scrub and clean. Limescale and mildew could easily be removed. Dust on toilet waste pipe which just needed a wipe. Box at back of room door thick with dust. Also, we don't know how long the cleaner had been using that mop but it was black. All the above issues could so easily be addressed with little effort.

Our go to Pub for a guaranteed good meal. This time I ordered 2 starters to be served as a main, whitebait and squid rings and my fellow diner ordered lasagne and a Malbec for me and a Doombar for Rob. Our food arrived and my Whitebait was outstanding. The Lasagne was glossy and smelled delicious. Service is always friendly and portions generous. Our lunch was £40 with a Thank You to the lovely staff. Looking forward to our next lunch out at the Black Bull in Fyfield…

We stayed for 1 night 24 June. What can I say. Not the great experience 😕 the B&B was dirty, the bathroom smells of damp, the shower was rubbish, the curtains were dirty, the mattress felt it had had better days, lumpy noisy and just the awful night. On a positive the breakfast was amazing, so much choice and the full English was lovely. I would defo eat in the restaurant again. But, sorry would not stay in the B&B again, its needs a deep clean and serious update.

We had a lovely meal in the Black Bull. We had not booked so we appreciated we were taking a bit of a risk, but the staff were so lovely and accommodating. The pub had a cosy atmosphere and the food was so delicious, very big portions! :) The staff were so friendly and helpful -my mum is disabled and they went out of their way to ensure she was okay in terms of wheelchair and accessibility. We had a lovely meal here and will definitely come again :)

We were recommended the Black Bull after a trail run as we like a good Sunday roast, we weren’t disappointed. Lots of veggies which many roasts don’t seem to do and plenty of very tasty beef. I’m not an expert but it was one of the best we’ve had for a while. Ordering drinks at the bar wasn’t a problem and the service was with a smile in a traditional pub.

Enjoyed the food, the waitress was superb, the only gripe would be the mamagaress, witnessed the atrocious way dhe spoke to them. May try again.

As a pre-Christmas family gathering, 13 of us descended upon the Black Bull for an evening meal. The staff were very helpful and accommodating of my elderly mother who had limited mobility, the food was superb and plentiful! All had a very good evening. If we have to give any constructive criticism, we found there was far too much food. Looking forward to returning soon!

Lovely B&B/pub in the middle of the Essex countryside. We stayed the night for a wedding reception nearby and can not fault the warm welcome we got from Nicola and Tony! Comfortable bed and cosy room, the food is lovely, really generous portions and a good range of traditional pub food, not to mention a great breakfast. roast potatoes were burnt & bad bits not cut out. cabbage could have been cut into smaller bits,lamb was tough and grisly,,there was hair in the food, lasanga was raw, the owner wasn't that apolegtic.and someone else on the day we went also sent their food back.no hair nets were being worn in the kitchen....would certainly not go back or recommend

This is a pub that does great food and portions are generous, ie starters are large main meal is large and food is good. Check specials board as well as menu! Car park good size as well! Enjoy if go please remember be hungry when you go! I went with family 6 of us and we all enjoyed the food.

We had lunch here with friends and really enjoyed the fillet steaks. They were big & tender and cooked to perfection. Pricey but nice. Service was good & friendly although being a Monday it was quite quiet. But it is obviously not a wine drinkers pub - if you want a glass of wine it comes from a 25cl airline type bottle, you don't get a choice of large or small. But we would definitely go back again.

My partner and i eat here regularly during the week for lunch.The food pub food but is always freshly cooked and the portions are huge.The staff are always friendly and eager to please, as are the govenor and his wife.Nothing is too much trouble in this pub which is why we and lots of other regulars go back time after time.Sunday lunch is fantastic and always packed and you need to book.This is probably an older persons type pub but that shouldnt stop anyone trying it out.Great value for money.Do not be put off by a few bad reviews on this site try it for yourselves before dismissing it.This is not fine dining and doesnt pretend to be. It is good fairly priced pub food.

Hate corporate hotels and this suited me perfectly - I could criticise but I was paying £65 for B&BMasses of food for £30 including Halibut! and when I said I'd be gone early they made me sandwiches with great ham, crisps, fruit and a chocolate bar to take with meThanks to the owners and I'll be back when I'm down again

This must be one of the worst country pubs ever. The people who run it have no idea, the landlord spends most of his evenings chatting to his mates or watching the TV whilst his wife does all the work. Awful beer selection (I mean this is 2019 – where’s the guest ales or craft beers) and don't even think about asking for a glass of wine - it's red or white - that's it, they serve the wine in the small screw cap bottles.

The welcome was good and there is plenty of parking, but the room is not really that great. With the windows shut it was extremely hot and stuffy, but with the windows open the sound from the traffic, especially the tractors going all night as it is harvest, was unbearable.

So booked 4 rooms at my local pub!! 3 rooms for one night 1 room for 2 nights. All rooms were paid for upfront. 2 lots of my friends went on the first nights to check in.when checking in the room were absolutely disgusting and filthy. Not fit for someone to stay in especially when paying for it. We informed the owner and asked for a refund explaining that we cannot stay in such a filthy room. The owner was one of the most rudest people I've meeting. He informed me there was no refund but also threatened myself saying"you dont want to mess with me ". Are you serious ??? Talking to me like that him knowing I'm a older gentleman and knowing he could intermediate me which he did.i reckon if I was a younger gentleman and I could look after themself he would of given me a refund.what a shame because its actually a pub I go to often what a shame !!!

I went here yesterday for a birthday meal with the parents, very much a good decision.

Visited the pub restaurant for a Sunday lunch with friends. The staff were very helpful and showed us to our table. The lunch menu had some good choices. There was a good selection of starters and a very good main course menu with four different types of meat as well as a fish and vegetarian options. I chose a mixed meat meal as my main course and can honestly say that it was one of the biggest meals I've eaten. It was fantastic. Everyone else's food was good as well,and all at a reasonable price, and the staff were excellent. We shall be visiting again definitely.

Back with friends on Father's Day for about the umteenth time, always love the Sunday Roast you cannot go far wrong. As always straight to our seats with drinks and the food arrived within 10 minutes of sitting down piping hot. A massive plate of food, deserts and a couple of soft drinks for around £15 a head. I have been to other places and for the price this is a must. The only downside is I am in Central London, otherwise I would be here every weekend :-)

Stereotypical village pub, very well presented, clean traditional ambience. Staff attentive, food ( not tried) looked very impressive and appeared to be getting great comments. Also has accommodation attached which looks great value

This is my 100th review and I saved it for a good one. I have been here many times. Great food and lovely place. Popped in tonight for a take-away Whitebait. Superb! The chef is a talented and deserves a pay rise! The owners always make you feel welcome too.

Had a takeaway roast dinner for 8 and could have feed 15 so much food such good value and the food was piping hot when i got it home had so much food left my friend took it and feed her and her husband and kids

My taxi driver took me the back route from Shenfield to Stansted Airport the other week and pointed out this little gem to me. My husband and I visited for lunch on Saturday. It was a chilly day but the fires were roaring inside and very welcome. My husband went to look at the specials board and I could hear his sounds of appreciation at what was on offer from the other side of the pub. He had the white bait and I had the baked avocado, both delicious. The mains though were superb and huge. His choice of pork belly was tender with perfect crisp crackling and my steak and kidney pie took me back to memories of my favourite Mum meal as a child. We would definitely recommend this pub.

Me and my husband plus our friends another couple , visited this pub last night . We had been several years ago for Sunday lunch and it was good . We now cannot think why we have not been back before now .

Went for country walk to the Black Bull. Arrived at the pub with intention to have lunch. While waiting at bar to be served the publican appeared and rudely challenged whether my walking boots were clean. Stated that I should have brought plastic bags to put over them before entering his pub. When I pointed out that the pub had been recommend to us by a local rambler as being the place to pause our walk and regularly used by ramblers, he replied that walkers to his pub always covered their shoes. I could not believe how aggressive and unwelcoming he was. It would have been ok if he had been polite or there had been signs outside displaying their policy.

Had a Sunday roast here recently with my wife. Beautiful old listed building with charming open fire, wood burner and beautiful beams.

food was excellent lots of it and very tasty . fish was so fresh steak good flavour service was a little slow but staff were very friendly and helpful

Phoned for a mixture of beef and lamb "for 4". Turned out that a mixture of beef and lamb "for 4" is actually 16 portions. My partner picked up the food (they got the order name wrong incidently, maybe an indication of their attention to detail), she questioned the 4 large boxes (seemed a lot for 4 portions) and wasn't even dignified with a response. When I phoned the pub to question the order, after it arrived I was asked by the manager what exactly do you want me to do. As I responded with "To acknowledge that when you order food for 4, that you don't expect to get food for 16" only to hear down the line, in the voice of the manager "I don't have time for this" and then the phone went dead.

As has been said many times before the quantities are enormous, but the overall quality is only average at best. The roast potatoes were not crispy, although they were dark in colour and the vegetables were all overcooked apart from the carrots.

Had a lovely meal at the black bull third time have been there and always had a lovely time. Nice family pub with great food detention going back again when get a chance.

Unbelievable!!! Got the take away roast tonight for my family, we had all the different meats the quality of this food was out of this world...I will never be cooking a roast again as this new gem that I have found tonight will always be 1st on my list, The meat, potatoes, veg and all the trimmings really were fantastic.....keep up the good work as you definitely have new customers in all my family and we are hard to please so glad I have found this place

Have visited the black bull twice now and both visits have been lovely, first time for a Sunday lunch, big portions but the food was delicious. And the second visit was lunch in the week. The lasagna was amazing again and big portions. And delicious cheesecake. Friendly and helpful staff

Stayed here for one night.Rooms tiny. Glad I never brought my cat as he likes a swing! Got woken at 4.00 a.m by rowdy workers returning from a night shift off the M25 motorway, shouting and revving vans on the car park! Breakfast was all deep fried and tasteless.wasn't even asked what I wanted, just had a fried breakfast brought out to my table. Not good. Contractor type accommodation. Would I stay again? Hell no.

5 of us to Sunday lunch. One of our party was wheelchair bound, slightly awkward getting to the table but not too bad and my fault for not mentioning it when I booked. Dinner was wonderful, very large but they are more than happy to put the left overs in doggy boxes.

I arrived mid-afternoon and booked in at the bar, which was friendly and appeared to be popular with the locals. The rooms were in an adjacent bulding and seemed to be fairly new. The layout of the room was standard, and passed my test - a good shower. There is plenty of parking at the rear of the pub. The beer was well kept, and although I didn't have a meal in the evening: the breakfast was excellent.

Traditional pub on outskirts of Fyfield. Very friendly and helpful staff. Accommodation is in a separate motel style block - perfectly adequate but a bit stark. Food is very good pub grub plus a number of specials including skate wing which was superb. All in all - well worth calling in if in area.

What a hidden gem. Rustic and friendly just how an English pub should be. Ample parking beautiful setting. Garden area that is south facing. You can watch the sunset. The most amazing roast dinner I have ever eaten. One of the staff serving was not as friendly as the other two but I'll be understanding in that it was very busy and she may have just been having a bad day. Shame we had to get up to order drinks at the bar though as we were too busy gossiping and stuffing our faces. Desserts were divine and full of choice. And the bill was most reasonable for what we had. Am so looking forward to my future where I can literally bring everyone I know haha.

We were lucky to get a table for 2 for Sunday lunch . We have been there before and really enjoyed the mixed roast. The femail staff were rushed off their feet, but forced a smile. Our food was ok - nothing like we remembered and the beef was dry. But what was really annoying was the constant ringing of the phone sometimes two phones, obviously people calling for bookings or takeaways, but the staff were too busy to answer.Our table was tucked against the wall in the bar so we couldn't get away from the constant noise. Don't think we will return. Only good point was waitress supplied take away boxes for my left overs as portions are huge.

Stayed overnight for a friends party locally. We found the room to be basic but very comfortable, clean and adequate for our needs. Breakfast was good and wholesome.

Having driven past this venue on numerous occasions we decided to book a meal there last Saturday. Ample parking and visually attractive from the outside. The inside is a classic country pub with lots of wooden beams etc. Friendly staff and wide choice on menu at reasonable prices. Food was good , with desserts very good. Amazingly there is a 10 bedroom hotel attached to the pub ,which would be worth a visit if needing to stay in the area.

We visited this pub for a meal in July and it was mid-week. We had reserved a table and when we arrived there were a couple of other people in the restaurant. There were two "reserved" tables so we assumed we would be OK to sit at one of these. We were told in no uncertain terms that we couldn't sit at this table as it was reserved for someone else. We were told to sit elsewhere and were directed to a table in the bar area. When the young waitress came with our menus we told her we weren't happy with the attitude of the older lady who had spoken to us badly. She apologised on her behalf and then said we could move back into the original seating area. Not a very good start to our evening. My friend and I felt like walking but our partners persuaded us to stay.

Poor roast dinner never worth the money better off going to a Toby carvery poor selection of veg asked if we could have another sort of potato said they had new ones was like bullets when we questioned these was told they had been put in microwave and forgot better places for a Sunday roast then here

Don’t bother! Rude staff. And as stated on their website ‘family run pub but don’t provide high chairs, but you can bring your own’ I’ll just load two of those onto my roof rack! What family establishment dont provide high chairs! Wake up, it’s 2018!

Four friends went for a Saturday evening meal at this pub. We had been there before about 2-3 years ago, we rated the restaurant poor then but we hoped that the place might have improved, but sadly no. Two of the diners ordered the soup, one ordered Soft Roes and one ordered Pate, these in themselves were not too bad. For the main courses I ordered Lasagna, one had skate and two ordered a meat pie, the vegetables were much the same, namely Chips and salad. the chips were only warm and not thoroughly cooked although the portions were immense.

I love this pub, Tony and Nicky are great and love Pipkin the little pub dog. Love the theme evenings and fires in the winter. Christmas is always fantastic here and the food portions here are huge!

We visited this restaurant for a family Sunday dinner. The Sunday roasts were good however those in the party having other dishes were disappointed with their food.

Great pub with large portions, friendly staff and the food was lovely. It was warm and cosy with the fire going and the little pub dog at the back was a gem.
