We visited here last night for my sons 18th birthday. The service, the food, the atmosphere was absolutely amazing and it totally made his birthday so special. The owners decorated everywhere up with banners and a balloon I had dropped off and nothing was too much trouble. The food was spectacular and freshly made which is always nice, fantastic choice of food at a very reasonable price. We will definitely be returning and will highly recommend this beautiful establishment to all our friends and family. Mark and Rachel should be proud of this beautiful gem of a pub they have created as it is just such a wonderful little hidden treasure. We will hopefully see you again very soon. Thanks for making Jake's 18th birthday so special and one to remember :)

We visited here last night for a 40th birthday meal. We all thoroughly enjoyed it, the food was fantastic, freshly cooked and not mass produced pub food you get so often these days. It was also very reasonable. There was a nice homely atmosphere and the service was good. We will definitely be returning!

My friend and I visited this nice country pub for Sunday lunch today. We turned up last minute, without a booking and the lovely guy behind the bar said he would see what he could do to get us a table (they were really busy at this point). We were told they could squeeze us in and we got a lovely table near the fireplace. Service was really good, prompt and very friendly by the lady serving us. The roast beef was beautiful and lots of it, served with perfectly cooked roast potatoes and a Yorkshire and plenty of piping hot vegetables. They had some fabulous desserts to chose from, both of which we choose were outstanding. I’ve been here a few times now and it’s always been fantastic. It was my friends first time and she absolutely loved it. We can’t wait to return!

We asked for a plate of veg and all the trimmings . Some places look at you like you're a weirdo just because you fancy a traditional Sunday plate but without meat, yes they do...so for all those people in the same boat, go to this pub,the food is delicious , the staff are very friendly and obliging, the plate of veg was hot, fresh and delicious and plenty of it. Sunday lunch for the second time and just as good. The pub is in a beautiful rural location. Inside a nice relaxed serene atmosphere, people eating and some just drinking. Excellent service, plenty of space, great value bearing in mind the portion sizes. The only very slight criticism was my partner's beef was a bit tough and my liver a tad over done but we still eat everything, it was very nice. Having regularly visited country pubs in the county, this one still tops the list.

A friend wanted to treat us to a lunch at this pub which he uses frequently and therefore recommended. The surroundings were comfortable and I enjoyed the open fire. There was no printed menu so we chose from the blackboard. Our friend recommended the duck so that was my choice. Fortunately it was served with a steak knife because i would have struggled to cut it otherwise. It was tough to say the least but naturally waited for my host who had chosen the same to comment. At no time did anyone ask us if our meal was OK so it was at the end of the course that our host commented on the meal. The waiter said he would pass our comment on but seemed unconcerned we weren't satisfied. As a guest I was not able to take the matter further myself.

This pub is situated on the edge of the village of Hungarton which is an advantage in more ways than one. We reached it by driving through the village which is a delight to the eye. Moreover it is sufficiently isolated to afford almost perfect tranquility for the traveller in search of good food in an attractive rural setting. It is hard to believe that the busy A46 is almost but happily not quite within earshot. To be honest we did not really challenge the extensive menu which offered items not usually found in your standard pub. My wife and I went for the beef bacon and Stilton pie (pies are my default choice when hungry!). These were more than acceptable and if I could rate the chips separately I would award them 5 stars! My daughter enjoyed a well filled sandwich. We were served by a cheerful friendly and efficient lady which more than compensated for the greeting from the (to me) very young barman which was almost formal in its lack of effusion! Perhaps he's just a bit shy!Unfortunately the quality of the food was not matched by the pub's decor. The total impression leans towards starkness and the restaurant is in need of some TLC in respect of the carpet and general decorations. I am told that the patrons have not long been in charge so I hope a refurb is high on their agenda. All in all however, this venue is marked out for a return in the not too distant future as the pluses do outweigh the minuses

Having had a good starter in the seafood platter ( albeit the prawns offering little taste) the mains arrived fairly rapidly after finishing them. Disappointing is not the word... Over cooked pork loin, dry and chewy ( most likely frozen ), supposedly with crispy black pudding but this was covered in the sauce ( more a broth ) which rendered any crispiness soggier than than last week! Another dish on our table was over cooked duck... A very poor effort on the food front ... Compensated a little by a reduced bill!

Ate here as part of a walking group of 38 on a Tuesday in January, the pub opened for us early in order to allow us to preorder and when we arrived back at 1 pm, the tables were all sorted and as soon as everybody had got their drinks they started to bring the food out.Within 10 minutes everybody had been served and everybody was delighted with their meal. Their was a good choice of meals from sandwiches, to soup to pies served with freshly cooked vegetables.Service was done with a smile and everybody left happy. Thanks

A wonderful pub, fabulous location, perfect food and a fantastic service from the staff. My nephews wedding and a meal afterwards at this pub. It really did make the day special and all of the staff couldn't do enough for us!

2 friends & I regulary meet up for a early evening meal, and this is one place we will definately go back to. We got there for 6.30, and there were already 9 people eating. Always a good indication. We decided on the seafood sharing platter to start - large amounts of smoked salmon, blanc bait, prawns in filo and prawns with dip, with bread. We all had more than enough, and in fact were beaten by a few blanc bait, although we gave it a good try. My friends both had steaks, which they said were lovely, and I had the fish pie, which was great. In fact we all wished the portions were smaller, as we had eaten so much from the sharing platter. Two of us couldnt manage a dessert, but friend 1 had 3 scoops of ice cream, which we all had a dip into, and they were really tasty. Definately on for a return visit

Visited the Black Boy for a joint birthday celebration of my father and my son. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, the food was excellent and they were more than happy for us to provide a cake for them to bring out with candles lit at the end of the meal. We'll definitely come back again!

Booked for Saturday night, bar staff and waiting staff were very polite and made us feel very welcome. The atmosphere was good. The meals were very good, decent portion sizes and good quality. Will definitely go back and would recommend to family and friends. I don't normally write reviews but felt we had to as this place was an all round good experience.

As a person who rarely leaves reviews for anything, I feel compelled to share my experience of eating out at the Black boy in Hungarton. After hearing quite a few good things about the food, I decided to take my family on a Monday evening to see for myself. On arrival, we were made to feel very welcome.Service throughout the evening was excellent, even though the pub was quite busy for a weekday. The menu was quite extensive, plenty choices even for my fussy children! The food we were served was of a standard I've rarely eaten in a pub restaurant and the prices were very reasonable. I can see why people recommend this pub, I shall certainly be returning for another visit in the near future.

Having dropped a present off locally we decided to call in for a pint before the 55 mile drive home. After we waited an age to get served we noticed the casual drinker is not made welcome. We were asked twice by the same person if we were eating within 10 minutes. We explained there was a good chance we were and would let them know. From then on we were blanked on trying to order another pint and an orange juice at the bar i became invisible the staff served others who had just come in to dine (2 party's) and THEN 2 more diners who had just entered. I went to use the toilet where a member of staff had just used it and failed to wash there hand's. On leaving i asked if i could please have an orange juice and a pint to be asked by the unwashed person if i was dining (not with those hands thank you) On getting back to the bar the glasses had gone. Shortly after so had we. Only to find a staff member smoking outside. Don't go if your not eating the price is expensive and staff ignorant of drinkers but the food looked ok.

We have eaten at the Black Boy many times . Although it is a little bright and plain inside the food is reliably good, well cooked and presented. The extensive range of desserts are especially tasty. Booking is recommended as it does get quite busy. There are usually 3 regularly changing real ales.

The food was generally good - one of us had a delicious rump steak, cooked medium rare as requested. The other had a mushroom &stilton lasagne which was OK. It's not a particularly pretty pub and the clientele somewhat elderly. Service was good.

We went for my Mums birthday,The prawns in the starter were tasteless, albeit we did have the set menu, but surely if you want to keep customers you do not serve fish which is frozen out of a box, which was very crunchy and vileIf we wanted that we would of gone to Iceland and got a box for £1.99We will not be returning

We stopped by for dinner after visiting the village and church. The decor was a little "tired" and not what we expected. The menu was huge; however, I think I made a mistake in selecting the pork with sweet and sour sauce; guess I wasn't expecting a Chinese-style entree in an English village inn. But that's what I got. Prices were reasonable.

For no apparent reason we have not visited this delightful little hostelry for some years. Tonight we were pleasantly impressed with the food and the prompt friendly service. It was a flying visit for us Basically a meal after work and before the sofa beckons - you know the score. But rest assured we shall return! Thinking of a Sunday Roast next - will update you as and when fellow tripsters!

Went to this restaurant a few weeks ago to celebrate a birthday with many friends. The staff were welcoming and courteous, tables were arranged to accommodate a party of 22 and the whole evening was pleasant and relaxing. The food had been pre-ordered for ease of preparation and the whole meal passed very smoothly. The food was great and every possible thing was done to make our party evening a great success. Many thanks to all

Hungry when we arrived in Hungarton. There was the Black Boy, just in the right place. The staff were friendly, the food lovely, and the facilities (in a lot of pubs usually too untidy and a little unsavoury) was tidy and clean. We have already made plans to return.

My husband and I have visited this place on several occasions with friends and found it to be consistent with the food and service, whilst on the outside it looks like a pub I would class this as a restaurant only. The food is well presented with decent plate sizes and value for money.

We came here for a Tuesday lunch on recommendation from a friend. We both ordered omelettes and mine was overcooked. The staff were very polite and attentive and the service was quick even though there were a few people in. What a disappointment though that the place was devoid of any character or atmosphere and did not make you want to hang around. Clearly they are aiming at diners and not drinkers. Don't bother if you are looking for somewhere to have a couple of pints - obviously they don't want your sort at the Black Boy.

We have been twice in the last 4 weeks the first time there was a large group of 18 of us. Food was fantastic on both trips but the service was slow. To give them the benifit of the doubt we went again just 3 of us the service was even slower. We were seated and ad rinks order taken but then just forgot about we waited 20 minutes and ended up having to go and find someone to take our food order. We were a little disapointed that the table behind us of at least 10 that arrived and were seated and order taken after us had there mains come out before we had even received our starters. Once we had finished 2 of us made our way to the carvery which was fully stocked, hot and smelt delicious. We waited a while for the plates to be cleared and to order deserts when they went off but didnt return we saw another waitress with the giant desert board walking around with it and tried to gain her attention. 15 minutes later we gave up waiting and ended up paying the bill at the bar and leaving. The resturant is lovely and as mentioned the food is fantastic but its just the service that lets it down. The novelty of the giant desert menu board is ok for quieter services but in my opinion I think just having regular printed desert menus would be more than ok for busy days. We will prehaps go again but we are not in any rush to go back. Had the service been quicker and more attentive I would 100% give them 5 out of 5.

Met up with old friends for an overnight stay. Place itself was ok and quite family orientated. Food was very much franchise style but filling and good value. Rooms were reasonable, big bed, big telly etc but a little grubby around windows although in general quite clean, got woke up though at 3am by couple upstairs having a loud conversation and then having loud romantic episodes so no sleep after all that. Staff were great, worked hard and long hours

I originally reviewed this pub as a 5 star however after a dismal breakfast today I needed to down grade it. Me & my husband ordered shashuka- which was cold when served. I spoke to waitress who apologised & took it back to which it was returned on same plate ( I had cut a piece of egg & left on side as was slimey- I'd asked for well done eggs as can't eat under cooked eggs) decided to raise my concerns with " duty mananger" who stood with his arms crossed & seemed dis-interested in my comments-he also stated that all meals were served on spec. Interesting feedback. The family on the next table also had issue with their breakfast being served cold & informed us as they left they got a full refund- we just wanted a sincere apology... we have been visiting this pub weekly for the last 15 years. We have reported this to head office.
