Love the place! Cheese, beer, wine, heaven!

Great selection of wines and beer, and excellent cheese and charcuterie boards! Staff were really helpful with recommendations and checking on us too.

Fantastic little place! We love their platters and drink choice, we usually have a table for 2 which can sometimes be in a tight spot but this seems to be the case everywhere. Lovely friendly local and the cheese selection really is top notch!

Came here to kick start my 23rd birthday celebrations expecting nothing more than a wine bar. However, The Bishops Cave was phenomenal - from the moment we stepped through the door. Paul was captivating, with his passion, charm and knowledge of all things cheese and wine. He provided excellent hospitality throughout the entire evening and made us feel so welcome and relaxed. I cannot wait to return and highly recommend to all!

An old fashioned wine bar for grown ups!! Superb platters, good wines. A fair Negroni too!! Love this place.

Had a great evening here with friends, had one cheese and one charcuterie board. Great selection of cheeses to choose from, really enjoyed it. Only downside, it was very noisy on the evening we visited, but would certainly visit again.

The girls are always so lovely and helpful, we went on Jazz night on this occasion and the live band are brilliant. The cheese really is delicious with lots of choice and we love trying a new bottle of wine each time we go. Thank you

We've been here multiple times in groups and just the two of us. The staff are really lovely, and the wine and cheese are fantastic. We love it here. Our most recent visit was for our wedding anniversary and we even got a free glass of fizz. Highly recommend!

This popular local hotspot often needs booking, so we were lucky as it was quite after 10pm tonight.. very unusual for a Friday. Always great wine and beer and cheeses to die for, although we were a little late for food boards. Can't wait to visit again soon. Great place to go if you are flying in/out of Stansted and staying locally.

Fabulous food, the staff were amazing

Always a good choice for cheese and wine lovers. We went recently and there weren't any menus so we could go and pick our cheese from the counter. A lovely ideas (expect trying to remember all the names) It's normally noisey in the evenings. It's tends to be to packed which is lovely but prefer it at lunchtime for a more relaxed feel. Staff are friendly and happy to help

Very nice experience and lovely staff. Great service and overall a lovely atmosphere. We had a bottle of Holy Snail, white French which was nice. Cheeseboard and a scotch egg and sausage roll. Very good produce served. I would definitely recommend.

Had a lovely evening at the bishops cave, service, wine and platter was excellent. The live music by the young lady was a lovely surprise too, will definitely return.

Went to this place with friends on Thursday 10 November had mixed platters and wine absolutely perfect and to top it off a amazing singer that sung all the right songs. Would definitely return.

We went on a recommendation of friends and we thought the whole concept was amazing. Our table was ready when we arrived 10 minutes early. We were welcomed by friendly staff who explained the menu and what to do. We had the cheese and meat charcuterie board with added pate, it came up with crackers, chutney, olives and pickles. All of it was so tasty and fabulous quality. Extra mature chedder and the truffle cheese we chose was out of this world. The wine and beer selection was outstanding and we were very pleased with our choices. All round great evening and we would highly recommend and definitely return.

Wonderful stuff. Had a nice European vibe to it with a good old buzz on a Saturday night. Interesting and varied wine list, decent cheeses. Bon.

Great local spot for wine and cheese boards!

Excellent friendly service, delicious and reasonably priced. Two of us had a glass each of Holy Snail sauvignon and shared a mixed board and everything was lovely! We needed a second portion of crackers. Couldn't recommend more! :)

More pub then wine bar. Waiter who greeted us (long hair, tie back) 16 April was giving us fake smile. If you dont feel smile. better not. Felt unwelcoming

£22 for an “average” Reserva Rioja (take out, not drink in). Thought it tasted sub-par for £22 Rioja and Vivino said that the average price per bottle is £12.75. Underwhelmed and won’t be going back again.

Wine cheese, what's not to love

Amazing assortment of cheeses, wines and beers. I recommend the mixed board. It's enough for two people. The Snowdonia Truffle Trove Cheddar was the most delicious cheese I've ever tasted.

Heaven. We got a cosy table by the door and had amazing service! My boyfriend has allergies and intolerances and they were able to confidently assist which is always amazing for us!! Highly recommend all the truffle cheeses - wow!

Lovely food great evening with friends beautiful place

Giving a 2 star as we've been on a number of occasions and really like the bishops cave. However my partner and I were taken down with covid this week like a lot of people and legally had to self isolate when my partner called to let them know, the man on the phone was just was really short and hung up on her when she said she needed to cancel due to having covid. Thinking the line must have dropped my partner rang back and said sorry i think we must have got cut off and he said I’ve cancelled it and hung up again! We both appreciate its tough times for the industry and hospitality but politeness is free.

We have been visiting the B. Cave for a number of years and it's our favourite place in Stortford. Whether you fancy a quick glass of wine after shopping or enjoying a night out with friends, this is our go to place. I totally disagree with the previous review as we have never experienced anything but fantastic service from Donna, Lisa & Vicky and they are all absolutely delightful. They all work extremely hard and are all super personable and knowledgeable about the wines. The owner Steve is always accommodating whenever we visit and loves a bit of banter! I agree the place can be a bit lively on Fri/Sat evenings but that's the beauty of the place - different vibes for different evenings. The cheese, selection of wine and charcuterie are amazing. They even serve cocktails. We will definitely be back.

Appalling customer service . Don’t care attitude from the Donna the Manager was totally unwelcome. Several customers agreed the service was terrible as well. The establishment would really benefit from employing older staff rather than students with life and customer service experience . Donna really needs additional training on how to manage and treat people with respect . Her attitude was pretty much leave we don’t need you in here .

The cave is very loud and the tables are close together. Service poor. It hasnt got a premium feel to it so if you are looking for something special then I wouldn't recommend.

Staff aren't wearing masks and get way too close. We didn't hang around for a second drink. The chablis we tried was light and clean tasting but I felt it lacked body. I think they should be a bit more careful with patron seating and their own COVID hygiene practices.

What can I say, lovely atmosphere, cheese board was amazing and drinks to accompany it. Would highly recommend and will be going back.

We have visited quite a few times for the quiz. The quiz master Pete is always excellent. The wine and cheeseboard we order for the evening is always lovely but this week we were particularly impressed by Emily's expertise. The cheese board she put together for us perfectly complimented the wine we were drinking as promised, she was able to tell us all about the different flavours, with a couple of interesting facts about how they were made thrown in. Excellent service and a fun quiz. I would recommend to prebook a table for quiz nights as it is very busy.

So nice to find somewhere where the whole vibe is relaxed - good wine, beers and drinks in general. Friendly and chilled. Gets busy - so go early!

I hired the cocktail bar at the back of Bishops Cave for my birthday party. I wanted to have a wine tasting and Steve, the owner, arranged it all for me. We tasted ten different wines with cheeses to match. Lots of different styles of wine with some background on the grapes and wine regions, nothing too stuffy though! It is a really excellent venue, there were around 25 of us and it felt really private but the ambience was great. The staff were really attentive and the little bar area meant people could order additional drinks if they wanted them (Rob the barman is awesome, great choice of G&Ts!). It was absolutely perfect and more than met my expectations. I love the wine bar anyway for a few drinks and some cheese, but would thoroughly recommend booking it for a wine tasting or party.

I think it was the owner chap, short & portly. Having a bad day? Moaned that our table had exploded from 8 to 28 (his words not ours). Its a right bugger when you get more customers than said would turn up and you have tables booked at 6pm when its only 4 pm, how are we going to cope? Dont worry pall, we are leaving and wont be back. Very poor bud.. how you have a 4.8* rating I will never know...

We just popped in at around 5pm on a Friday afternoon. Had a bottle of wine some pate and some stuffed peppers. Noticed that all of the tables were reserved for later that evening. There is a cocktail bar and a downstairs area as well. Friendly staff and very helpful.Bottle of Wine and nibbles - £32

Visited Bishop’s Cave for the third time recently. There’s always a great selection of wine and gins, also great choices of cheese. The staff are friendly and helpful. Overall a great bar.

the wine list by the glass and the bottle is impressive with selections from around the world, pricing is reasonable.. The cheese platter had sensible portions and you select from the range in their cabinet. The wood beamed character adds to the experience and the staff were very helpful on the choice of wine and cheese

Great wines and very knowledgeable staff. If you are into wine ina serious way then this is the lace for you. The cheeses are also really good. I tried the French cider which was great. Expensive but you get what you pay for in this instance. Would happily go back. Can get busy, so booking (especially at weekends) is advised.

The staff are ok but the owner needs much to learn. He is rude and quite objectionable. Having been a supporter of this establishment since it opened, as his perception of success hit home, his dislike of long standing clients has become rather evident. He is a liar, accusing patrons of upsetting staff, his understanding of good client relations is sadly rather lacking. I would not set foot inside this establishment ever again and unless you plan a one off, I would not go there. Richard.

Snug bar in the centre of town serving Belgium beers and a fantastic selection of wines. The charcuterie and cheese boards are legendary as are the scotch eggs!

Perfect little place for great cheese, charcuterie and drinks. They do a few things and do them really well! Service was friendly too. I tried some of the beers, all awesome. The wine menu looked tempting enough for me to be back soon!

Visited today waitress took our order fairly quickly, our food was brought to th counter but it was a good 15 minutes before it was served to us. As the waitress for first chatting with the kitchen staff & then serving customers. I then had to wait for cutlery as givin two knifes. The scotch egg I had was very dry when I mentione it I was told it couldn’t be as it was fresh in then was told it was delivered on Thursday . The guy I assume to be the owner asked what was wrong, after the waitress told him he tried another then left the shop. When we asked for it to be removed from the bill we were told that the owner had said they were fine . I wouldn’t have complained it it was fine and would have eaten it . It was removed from the bill but the waitress was not happy . Needless to say I won’t be recommending this venue or visiting again

Popped in for something different on Saturday afternoon. Couple of bottles of pink fizz and some cheese and meat platters, perfect way to spend an hour or two. Good portions and left very content.Tables all reserved from 6 so it would seem if you want to go in the evening that you’d be wise to book.

Great location in the centre of Bishops Stortford. The place to meet up with friends for a decent glass of wine or boutique beer and a sharing platter of food. The closest thing Stortford has to a good Spanish tapas bar!!
