The Birds Nest is the epitome of what a good cafe/restaurant should be. The staff are exceptional, all so well trained and encouraged by the Manager. All the staff are keen, polite and helpful. If ever there is a problem is is quickly and politely resolved. The atmosphere is joyous and the staff know their customers (and their foibles) well. Everyone is welcomed. The food, cakes and drinks are always excellent and always fresh. It is no wonder that Shrewsbury Market is so highly rated when there are places like this available.

Went as a small family group and bought drinks for everyone and loaded fries to share. The fries took a very long time to come and were very small considering the £7 per portion price. Unfortunately the tea we ordered arrived in a pot that was all style and no substance. No room for the tea to move around and brew in the tiny crammed strainer and the pots don't pour well so you end up with weak tea water everywhere. Returned the tea and explained the issue and that we didnt want a replacement, just a refund on the tea please, but when it came to paying we were faced with an argumentative officious manager who couldn't grasp the situation and kept trying to insist that we should have taken a replacement and stood over our family table trying to argue that the pots weren't designed for stirring tea and that they don't offer refunds but replacements. I think style over substance sums this place up, which is a shame as it used to be a nice place to eat. Manager definitely needs some customer service training, but I doubt we'll be returning.

Three of us ordered 2 x sourdough toast and a sardines breakfast. Saw the sardines on the hot plate quite some time before the toast. Then the sardines were actually served with just one of the toast ordered. Had to ask for butter. The second toast arrived some 10 minutes later. Why would this take so long? Had to ask for sugar for my latte as well. Latte was fine but at £3.40 is the most expensive in town! Also £4.80 for two rounds of sourdough toast seems a bit rich. Almost a tenner for 4 buttered pieces of toast!

This is not the best that Shrewsbury has to offer. Very overpriced and mediocre to say the least. We ordered a bacon brioche roll which was the tiniest portion possible! The portion size was minuscule and the whole thing seemed to have been microwaved. It was advertised as containing 4 slices of bacon, but they were mini pieces of streaky. At over £5 this was really pushing it. The cake was mediocre but the drinks were ok. Shrewsbury is full of independent coffee shops, most are far superior to this and most offer far better quality and value for money. We won’t be returning.

We arrived for breakfast on a Saturday morning. There was a booth free so we asked if we could sit there. The answer was no as the waitress said they were saving it in case a family came and needed a high chair. We were seated at a round table with the most uncomfortable stools I’ve ever sat on. Ordered a flat white. It came out and was almost luke warm at best. I sent it back stating it wasn’t hot enough. The same drink came back to me clearly either warmed in the microwave or heated further with the milk steam wand. Wouldn’t kill to make a fresh cup. Terrible service when a premium price is charged.

Stopped here for a quick drink whilst walking around the market. We grabbed a table and maybe 5-8 minutes later a guy took our order on his iPad. Some 10 minutes later a lady asked if we had ordered since the toll system had just crashed. She found our order and we waited…. Another 15 minutes or so and having watched several food orders go and another customer behind ask “have you forgotten us ?” we asked where our drinks were. They arrived a few minutes later. The Wife thought her leaf tea was great, my latte was warm(ish). As I said, not exactly difficult is it ?. Good job it was a very quiet day.

We had tried to visit previously but our timings were always bad with a lot of people half a coffee ahead of us. On this occasion (late night opening) we positioned ourselves correctly and swooped in for a table before the rush. It’s quirky (in a good way) with different types of seating and tables available. The staff were excellent and were part of the overall enjoyable atmosphere. The seasonal menu had something for most tastes and we shared an excellent platter. The prices were similar to other venues in Shrewsbury. You need to find a table, look at the menu, go to the counter to order and the staff will then bring it to your table. There is enough room around the counter/bar area to stand and have a drink but you would need to keep an eye out for a table coming free as people can appear from two directions and slide into a table suddenly! It was understandably busy; we will definitely return.

Went in on a cold Friday afternoon a week ago for cake and coffee, and was confronted by a man who we didn't realise worked there, before we'd seen a menu, or any display of what's available. "What d'you want?""Argh!" I ordered a macchiato; my friend ordered a mocha. I, in a moment of guilt, decided to forgo cake; my friend ordered a brownie. The coffee came, spilled on a wooden board. The mocha tasted not much like coffee, and not much like chocolate, and a lot like boiled water and limescale. The macchiato had an overpowering taste of burned coffee beans, so bitter and burned, that no amount of sugar could sweeten it, like the burned crusts of twice toasted bread that’d caught fire. It’s never a good sign when something so simple is done so poorly. Tesco value instant licked off the pavement wouldn’t’ve been worse in terms of flavour. The wrong cake came, but we decided not to make a fuss seen as the waiter wasn’t much able to bring drinks to a table very well (bless), and we thought we’d only confuse him. It was a courgette and God-knows-what kitchen-scraps sort of thing. It was a hard sponge, as stale, dry and tasteless as could be, except for the part at the bottom, which did have a taste, and that was foul. It looked like chocolate, but it tasted like old chip-fat. All in all, two overpriced cups of yuck and a small plate of nasty for £10, served by hipsters with too much hair and too little thought for customer service. It could’ve been worse, I suppose, but I don’t think I’ve ever had worse in my experience. And that’s including a tea stall surrounded by rats on the edge of an Indian slum overlooking a beach primarily used for open defecation, which incidentally, did a lovely clove tea with a rich caramel undertone. I went back there for more. I ain’t going back here in a rush – ‘twas mingin’ in extremo.

We were headed somewhere else when we passed the Bird's Nest, took a look at the menu, and decided to give it a try. Not sorry we did! It's a bit rough-and-ready, but the food was lovely! Really enjoyed the domburi bowl.

Really good food. Can not fault. Why an average review? Is it really necessary to be subjected to loud mindless noise? Food excellent. Uncaring staff about my comment.

Could not fault a thing. This HAS to be a place to come back to time and again. Food brilliant and reasonably priced. Congratulations!

Vibrant atmosphere, fabulous music on the day we visited. Delicious tasty breakfast, papers to read while you wait. Quick friendly service. One of our favourite places for breakfast.

Saw some of the reviews mentioning poor service standards but that wasn't our experience. Ok, it's casual but it is a cafe but entirely functional. Great coffees and fresh well prepared cooked breakfast. My waffles with crispy bacon and scrambled eggs was delicious. Good vegan and vegetarian options as well. We enjoyed the experience and it was value for money. I can understand if it's not to everyone's taste but hey it looks quirky but delivers what it promises...

Well priced but interesting little cafe in the market. Freshly made recipes from all over the world in a funky little corner of the market. Books and papers to browse and dead good sounds on the speakers. Plus friendly staff. What more do you want?

Ive been coming here for several years now, for breakfast, a few lunches and several evenings too. Its always evolving - that's a major strength. The staff change, thats only natural. The menu innovates, a healthy and crucial key factor. But somehow the quality increases, the prices havent leaped up - as an award winning cafe they COULD have milked this. But their ethic is obviously based on serving their customers - not ripping them off. Hence me retunring time after time. Ive never been let down by poor service, declining standards or profit before people. Nuff said.

Had the misfortune to dine here recently on a night they had live music in the outside bar area. Food was awful, service was awful. We were told on arrival that they should not have taken our booking and the kitchen was closing soon so we were rushed. With hindsight we should have left and tried elsewhere. Never again

Came here by accident when we drove along A5 and we were all totally impressed by the tasty food. I finished every last bit of garlic and almond slices in the broccoli dish… and my daughter finished the sweet potato fries. In short every dish is brilliant!

Went here today for a birthday lunch for 5 people. The lunch menu is really limited for vegetarians. You have either have a sandwich, a baked potato or, a chicken salad (without chicken 🤣) brill. The barman asked the manager Lee, and he was quite rude and just read the items to me from the menu. When leaving, trying to split a bill became a nightmare to the point where the barman was displaying his annoyance with us. 70 quid later, we've agreed we won't be back.
