A nice pub situated on a main road but no double yellows outside so not difficult to get to. Clean inside, nice decor and comfortable seating. Decent selection of ale. My rag pudding, chips, peas and gravy was bang average for the price, if I’m honest. I think I was expecting chippy style food. I got that a bit wrong. The chips and peas portion size was slightly small but my main complaint would be the gravy. It was a bit watery. Overall, not massively bad.

The Birches is a very welcoming pub, great atmosphere with an open fireplace to warm any weary traveller. A great selection of beers and larger, I had a glass of their Australian Shiraz, which was very nice; much nicer than what is usually served in pubs. Food is served using locally sourced produce. It is traditional, very well cooked, and served on nice warm plates. Recommended to all.

The Birches is a local pub that has recently undergone a refurb and has a new owner. My husband and I went here as we were house sitting nearby so initially popped in for a drink early doors and were impressed with the modern decor, friendly landlord and staff. I see from past reviews that this used to have a Thai restaurant but this is no longer the case. However the pub does serve food on Thursday, Friday evenings and weekend lunches and dinners - nice pub grub menu which includes interesting light bites and sharing platters. We went in most evenings for a drink and then a meal on the Friday evening. I had a lovely beer battered fish and chips and my husband had 'Rag Pudding' which was a delicious type of steak suet pudding. The service was excellent. This is a local pub that does food and there is a pool table in the back room.

4 stars for the food. Best Thai food since Thailand, special fish curry was delish as was everybody elses mains. Fresh, fragrant and just right amount of heat. Pub itself needs alot of work and I know alot of pubs struggling even before lock down but this really needs some investment or at least a few pots of paint. But unless people go back to supporting their locals...

Finally went to try out the Thai food at The Birches Pub in Whitworth and oh what a pleasant surprise. All of the food my family tried was first class but the Pad Thai I had was absolutely top quality and truly one of the best I have ever had and that includes two trips to Bangkok. They have got a top notch Thai chef Nok who produces food of the highest quality. I was guilty of assuming it would be typical pub food and a sanitised version of Thai cuisine .. boy how wrong was I .. highly recommended

Fantastic ambience in this family friendly pub restaurant. The bar staff are all very friendly and we have formed quite a friendship with the Thai Lady Chef! We visit here regularly, both as a couple and with our toddler and we are always made to feel welcome. Only downside is we can't resist ordering some Thai Food every time we are in here!! It's fantastically presented and deliciously addictive. 10% off your bill if you take-out. The drinks are a great affordable price too, which always makes the visit a lot more pleasurable. And they have some great Friday night Happy Hour drink offers. If you're passing by be sure to stop by, you won't be disappointed!

Visited here with “The Girls” for my sisters birthday mid-week. Since I last visited it has new owners and is no longer the horrid hulk green inside. They have a well stocked bar and the selection of gins on their Gin Bar was impressive. They do a Friday night Happy Hour that looked to have some good alcoholic deals on. The Thai restaurant part is basically a dining area to the back of a pub, but to be honest it works well- there’s plenty of space and it seemed clean and tidy. The menu is extensive and has a wide range of authentic Thai dishes including meal deals or banquet options. The chef is a lovely little lady and is happy to make a dish exactly to your specifications or dietary requirements. We ordered a wide range of starters and mains. The food was absolutely amazing. It was presented beautifully and there was plenty. Every one of us really enjoyed our food. The chef came out to also check we had all we needed and if there was any problems. I have visited two other establishments over the years where the same chef has cooked and she always delivers a superb service. She is an asset to any establishment! All in all- was a fabulous night we were made to feel very welcome and as it was mid week it wasn’t overly crowded or rowdy in the pub half. We noted they also do take-away so that will be on my Friday night treat list. There is parking, but pub is on a main road so is a little limited.

This isn't our closest local pub, but it has become our local! Friendly, welcoming atmosphere and relaxing place for children to play. The Thai food is 5* absolutely fantastic and very well presented. I've tried 2 takeaways (collection only with 10% off) which are fantastic too. The Thai lady always offers my son a lollipop or ice-cream gratis every time we have a meal - he loves her! Drinks at the bar are reasonably priced, very nice beer, great selection of Gin, and the outdoor seating area is very unique, with a terraced smoking/seating area, followed by some steps onto another seating area below with a large area of grassed land for children to play on. The atmosphere is just brilliant and this is definitely our new 'homely' pub.

The Birches is a traditional local pub, with all the usual suspects. The guy who loves to shout so the whole pub can hear, the lady who laughs like a hyena and makes sure you hear the joke repeated twice. Also has the old guy who just stares at you as if you shouldn't be there. Oh I nearly forgot the amazing Thai food served in the restaurant section at the back. Unfortunately it is not separated from the pub with it's loeder than normal locals, or the pool table with the swearing...but hey the food is great. If you are deaf or don't care about having a conversation with your wife without shouting, this is the place to come. I feel sorry for the chef who cooks this remarkable food, they should be working in a refined restaurant. Unfortunately there are better places to go for Thai food in North Manchester. We tried The Birches once and won't be back. 3 stars because of the pub environment, the food gets 5+

I would give the food and the chef 10/10 however the place is bloody awful. This chef should have the confidence to leave this grotty pub behind and open up somewhere on her own.

Sorry this is not the review you are looking for. Sunday evening I was looking forward to enjoying a meal with my two daughters and family's. We had to wait over 1hr to be served our main course, we and another couple were the only ones in the bar. When the bar maid sat down next to us with her meal. When asked why are staff being served before customers as this is not very professional we was treated to abuse by the said staff. This is not what running a bar is all about. The food was great and enjoyable, the waitress was embarrassed by what happened. If the chief is looking to make a living out of this resterant, I would look elsewhere. The service was appalling and abusive, when leaving we where told she was late for her date. The Birches is somewhere I have been going for over 5 years, and is now under new management- I wish them the best of luck in a very competitive business and area. Visited on a Saturday afternoon with my sister and our 4 children. We were the only people in there. The decor is awful, although 100% cleaner than the previous owners, the flooring is lovely and the toilets look amazing after its half finished refurb. But unfortunately Hulk Green puts me right off. The dart boards gone too which was a firm fav of my friends when we went on a weekend. Also the snooker table is on uneven carpet so again, a no go! The drinks were average price and they have some kind of Tia Maria frappe machine thing which looked interesting and a wine list, although bar staff did not know their wines to accompany the food menu. The meal itself was basic "pub Grub" and a very good price for all of us. I had fish n chips, sister had steak and kids all had nuggets and chips.Staff were very friendly and did ensure all was ok.All in all basic visit, won't rush back for grub, but iv tried it, it was what i paid for and I know they have some superb meal offers on during the week and a tapas night coming up for only £10 per person. They also have live entertainment on at weekends with local bands /DJs.I so hope they go from strength to strength as they are new.

I'm going to try to be as balanced and as fair as possible whilst writing this review in the hope that the new owners take note of one of their regulars who has given up on this pub.I've been going to this pub, mainly on a Sunday, for about five or six years and always looked forward to my afternoon in my local pub. There was nothing flash about the pub when the previous owners had it, in fact you would probably have said that it was a bit old fashioned and a bit rough and ready, but it was a proper pub. The food was lovely and reasonably priced and the beer was excellent. This is where I need to hold my hands up and say that although I am in my mid forties I am a bitter drinker. The previous owners kept a lovely pint of Sam Smith's Sovereign or Old Brewery plus a good selection of lagers. Carling, Peroni and Cronenburg. You could also get a bottle of house wine for less than a tenner and the food was excellent. If I had one complaint about the old management it was that it could get a bit "chavy" with kids roaming around whilst their parents got hammered. However the pluses far outweighed the negatives and the owners were always genuinely pleased to see you. When the pub was taken over we had high hopes for this pub, only to have them dashed on the first visit. The new owners closed the pub for five weeks whilst they refurbished the pub. When it reopened I felt totally underwhelmed. They had painted the walls green and put in a stone floor. They decided to get rid of the Sam Smith's beer and introduced three hand pulled beers. The problem is that they change the hand pulled beers from week to week, so that you never know what you are getting. The drawback to this is that you are taking pot luck with your pint. It may be nice, it may be awful. Then next week it's all change and you are back on the lucky dip again. I'm going to be honest as well, they can't pull a decent pint. Every time I've tried a pint it's been flat. If you are going to rotate your beers every week you need to keep one top quality regular beer that you can fall back on. I don't want to have to go through two or three pints just to find one good one only to find that the following week it is gone. I can't comment on the food having never tried it, but the owners have never said thanks once. In fact they seem to shy away from the customers. Today we were charged £9.05 for a pint of cider and a large white wine, which should have come with a splash of lemonade, but came with a small bottle of soda. For nearly ten pounds I could have brought two bottles of wine from a supermarket and at least the checkout person would have said thanks. Very disappointed!

Poor quality, would not eat there again. If the colour of the green walls doesn't put you off the food will.

Went on fathers day, hardly any food on the set menu was available. Waiter was rude, got the littlest bit of peppercorn sauce enough to cover A chip. Asked her to put more peppercorn sauce in the little jug and just poured boiling hot water in to the jug. Dessert, either cheese+biscuits or caramelised brownie. I opted for cheese and biscuits, and there was 4 different cheeses and 4 plain crackers. The waiter didn't even know if we had paid and tried making us pay twice. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

We eat regularly at the Birches and have always had a consistently excellent standard of meal with a good variety of choice on the menu.

Great friendly service, food was spot on... cheap and cheerful, great food for the price, lots of choices for drinks... although I would have liked a Stella, there's nothing to whinge or moan about, friendly bar staff. The self service station for condiments works a treat as you don't have to wait around to ask for sauces, knives forks etc... 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Been here a few times over the years and it's a lovely cosy eating establishment, food today was good but a little let down by service from the staff, they were friendly enough but nearly 10 mins after been taken to our table not one person asked us if wanting drinks ,it's basic customer service . We had to ask for them to come over and once served with food not once came over and asked if everything ok. 4 staff chatting away with each other. Just needs tinkering with the staff that's all. Also don't like the idea they put a service charge on your bill without asking you ,not many customers will see this on the bill, it's quite sneaky to be honest.

The pub seemed alright, bit dirty but it’s old I guess. The Ale selection is terrible and seemed over priced. They do serve some food, Pizzas’s mostly, but the fact that it’s cooked outside in a dirty trailer really puts me off them, plus, where is the good hygiene rating???? - Would not recommend!

I love Christmas dinner. The trimmings and the memories of growing up with the tradition. I have had a few Christmas dinners in the area and this was the best. They use real turkey, not the processed slices but the real bird. Moist with all the trimmings. The trifle and the mince pie with cream also went down very well. So sorry they do not serve it all year or as a special some times. .Price was great .
