The Big Fish in Cheltenham

Usually enjoyed food from here but tonights was not worth it. No mini cod so had cod bites instead but they were mainly batter with very little cod. They were also chewy and cold. Not a nice meal at all.

We come from Churchdown to get fish and chips from here. Chips are just like we used to get at home. The fish is more like a whale!!! When we get gone the food is still hot!! I haven't got a bad word to say about the place. Friendly staff and good service. Could do with one in Churchdown coz we have no chippy here at all!!! 100% the best!!!!

Food is always good but staff always have one eye on clock. If you publish opening hours until 2 and 9:30 then stick to them. If it means having to cook more then do so. Given you’re one of the most expensive shops in town you can’t really afford to frustrate your customers, by letting them queue then telling them there’s nothing left and it’s 1:50 what you mean is you can’t be bothered to cook anything!

Visited here a couple of weeks ago. I had chips & cod nuggets. Excellent size & the tastiest chips I’ve ever had. Very friendly staff Highly recommend!

Really crispy batter, good portions, good prices!

Excellent chippy! Fed 4 of us, all of us very happy. We use several chippys around Cheltenham but make the trip across town to The Big Fish because the quality is the best around. Large chips are massive and they are delicious. Large haddock was perfect. Mushy peas and curry sauce - super tasty. Can't recommend highly enough.

Delicious food and great service

Paid for an order when I got home pie was missing! Called was told they couldn’t deliver and I needed to return to the shop otherwise would have to have next time! Not the service you expect I would have to drive several miles back! Spoke to the manager who sarcastically told me that he could leave the shop to bring the pie to me and let the shop burn down! And not ever to go back to the shop again and put the phone down! Nice customer service!

Excellent steamed cod - it's brilliant to have this. All in all a great chippy, but I wish you had some vegan options for my wife - maybe tofish, vegan burger, pea fritters. With these options it would be 6 stars, never mind 5!

First visit... polite friendly fast service had Fish & Chips x 2 .. cost £23 which is a fair price these days. Tartar sauce & Lemon included. Tasted fantastic and I would highly recommend it.

Rip up. £21 for two fish and chips. Exorbitant. Sort out your card reader, its 2024 cash should not be the only payment method. Service dire, the girl who took my order chatted to her mates for a solid 2 minutes before acknowledging me. Has this place changed owners in the few years? Used to be a really lovely manager here who clearly ran à tighter ship

Best. Fish and chips in a long time

One of the most fresh and generous portions of fish and chips I have had in all of Cheltenham dare I say the UK. Good ambience and staff. Just a little inconvenient as they only accept Cash (cash machine across the shop). Regardless it's worth the walk across to get the money as the food was delicious.

Beyond bad. The fish was the smallest ive ever received. When I asked for a different bit they asked if I was "taking the piss". I was then told to leave and never come back. I will leave the photo of the fish for you to make up your own minds. £8.50 ?

Delicious Fish & Chips in Cheltenham. Mega portions.

Sometimes you can go in here and it is nice other times like today (28/02/2024) you can go in there and it's awful. I ordered chips and a chicken burger, the chips were cold and tasted as if they were cooked hours before, and the chicken burger (if thats what they call it) was a bap with a mountain of lettuce couple slices of gherkin (i know eho puts gherkin in a chicken burger, ok in beef burger) a drop of sauce and 2 tiny chicken bites (no chicken burger to be seen). Dissapointed is a very big understatement, use this place when i want chip shop but will not be going there again. Would add a pic but not giving me the option

Actual gluten free fish and chips with no reactions. Some places claim they make this, but seem to be getting something wrong somewhere along the line. Not this place. Delicious and safe, what's not to love?

Such lovely friendly staff, great food and big portions. Family friendly, we took my granddaughter and they were very very accommodating, even offering to clear up under the high chair when we were leaving. Ollie was a star and we will be back again. Recommend!

Got a takeaway haddock and chips with curry sauce. Haddock was good size tasty and had crispy batte , good chips and tasty warm curry sauce. Comes with free tartare sauce which was also good. Quick and friendly service (Note the crushed peas in the photo were homemade)

It was raining really heavily tonight so I decided to order via Deliveroo instead of walk up. Pretty disappointed to see the prices on deliveroo are higher and the portion size is considerably lower. £11 (including a bag charge which is odd considering it arrived in Deliveroo branded bag) got me a battered sausage and about 15 chips. I think its time to try another chippy.

Fantastic place, very friendly and lovely staff who go the extra mile to help you. Tasty food, the steamed fish was so healthy and great they have that option. Super clean and great value for money. Well worth a visit, highly recommended.

Really brilliant meal tonight. Very friendly service, quick for a huge order, and delicious food.

Stopped by for late dinner takeaway. Still had their daytime special pricing signs out which was a minor frustration. Chip portions good, chips nice and fresh, cardboard box was a nice touch. Fish cakes just the standard mass produced ones, but we still enjoyed our dinner. Would recommend.

Always very friendly and quality of fish is excellent. Highly recommend! I like my batter extra crispy and they always oblige. Wouldn't go anywhere else! 👍

Can’t honestly say I like the new layout it’s muddled and doesn’t flow. Just a battered sausage and chips which were both excellent and nicely fried. The place is clean and the staff friendly

TERRIBLE SERVICE. Yesterday evening we ordered meals for the whole family using Deliveroo. Only half the meals were delivered and after contacting Big Fish they said they had forgotten to give the delivery driver one of the bags containing the other meals. They refused to deliver the missing bag and said we had to collect it. By the time we had done that all meals were cold. So, a family meal ruined by awful service from Big Fish.

Lovely fish and chips although far too many chips for us. We ate in the the restaurant area which was clean and comfortable and away from the main takeaway area. Nice, friendly staff.

Dinner for six… we stopped here at the weekend near to closing time and order a variety of food for 6 adults. We sat at the indoor tables that were available which were sizzle and clean. All the food was nice, portion sizes are good, staff were super friendly and they all had good banter. Would certainly stop and eat here again in the future

Not been here for a few years, and doubt if I will come again. Very disappointed with the quality of fish and chips. Also very expensive compared to other Cheltenham chippy's...

A real old chipper, friendly and scrumptious...

Travelling on the road for work and gigs, you can't beat a good fish and chips, especially when it's cold out there. Cheltenham and Gloucester have a fair number of chippies but when out that way, this is the one I generally return to. More of a traditional chippy with pickled onion too, unpretentious with friendly staff, not over done but still crispy battered cod and fluffy chips which are never oily. Bonus, especially for the Cheltenham area is parking is free from 6.30pm in nearby car park or street and had a small eating-in area.

I ate in at Bath Road 'Big Fish' takeaway yesterday evening on my way home from work. I found myself enjoying a piece of 'steamed' Cod; without batter, served to me with a wedge of lemon and tartar sauce on the side. Together with a portion of the best cheesy chips I've eaten, the 'steamed Cod' is a first at a chip shop I've experienced ever! I can assure you it was worth every penny. A healthy alternative to a fried, batter covered piece of Cod. 👍 I went home afterwards feeling pleasantly surprised and also satisfied at having had a healthy fish meal, at a price that's affordable in our time.

Food is always really tasty and fresh and always been my favourite chippy. Ate at the tables on Wednesday and the Evening team were so friendly and attentive, we'll definitely be back for an evening mid-week treat!

Tonight we had 3 cod and chips and 1 gluton free cod and chips. The cod and chips were acceptable and no problem. However the gluton free cod was inedible, very hard and totally not fit for purpose. We were offered no compensation on the telephone. We are all old age pensioners and I consider this an insult. Will never use again. Please everybody boycott.

3 out of 4 meals of fish and chips were very good. The gluten free fish was inedible batter hard and fish dry. This meant my husband who is coeliac only had chips! We are very disappointed as we have had delicious gluten free fish from this restaurant in the past We would not be confident to have gluten free food from this restaurant again.

Fabulous lunchtime service from the lovely Elaine, nothing to much trouble. Great food, the best chunky fresh cooked chips ever and a meal deal for a fiver. Sat in the warm and watched the lunchtime telly, perfection! Thankyou

This place was great! Came recommended by a coworker and I'm glad I went. Was promptly greeted by friendly staff and the food was ready in minutes. Crispy, delicious fish and thick chips. They even asked if I wanted malt vinegar, which I happily accepted. They had a few tables in the back so I ate there. Highly recommend stopping by!

I picked this place because I could practically park my motability car right outside the front door. I went in and got served rather quickly. Food was lovely. Proper fish and chips.

Excellent haddock and chips for myself and partner. Cooked perfectly with just the right amount of food. Not too long a wait and friendly staff on a busy Wednesday evening, what more could you ask for, in fact a much better experience than under the previous ownership. We will return!

Situated on Bath Road, The Big Fish is arguably the best chip shop in Cheltenham. It’s location is ideal as it’s 10 mins walk away from the high street. Staff are really welcoming, continuing the warmth that customers are used to getting from Nick, the owner of the chip shop!

Fantastic, piping hot food with minimal wait time for a large order which in and of itself is amazing, but Laura’s advice on portion sizes (the amount of chips is massive!) was spot on so our visit was economical and not wasteful as well. This is our new go-to fish and chips shop.

First visit. Fantastic, gives the more famous Cheltenham Chippie a very good run for its money.

Quite good. I quite enjoyed fish and chips at the table although it was a little bit soggy. The apple juice was very good. I enjoyed the time with my friend at the table in the store.

Not a good experience tonight Tuesday 20th April we event there to order some gluten free fish and chips after waiting 10 mis in the queue we were told that you weren't doing it tonight, there was no notices saying that it was not available tonight. We were told before that you did gluten free every night except Friday why then did you not do it tonight ???????

Not the best meal tonight especially given the price. £7.50 for Cod on its own is extortionate. Chips were unappealing, possibly been sat for a while and reheated but lots of hard ones. One Cod was large and the other, for the same price, was about half the size! Lots of grease in the boxes running off the fish. Wouldn’t rush back….

Just paid £8 for two portions of dry and flavourless takeaway chips. Gutted. Should have gone to Simpsons.

I collected for 'A.N.Other'. Very popular chippy. Busy. Worth going out of the way to. Good selection of fried products, including 'gluten free. A sign states that Sunflower oil is used for all their products. HOWEVER, minimal choice for vegans, hence the the one star deduction.

This take away has always had great food and great service but today the chicken burger I ordered was pink...clearly pink! An A&E burger right there, thankfully I noticed on my first bite but that was disgraceful absolutely disgusting. Despite their good food and good service in the past I won't be a customer here again.

Best fish and chip shop in town

After trying most of the fish and chip places in Cheltenham, the one i've settled on the last few years is the big fish. My kids love eating there in the diner style booths too. Succulent fish, properly cooked chips (not anemic like most) just great fish and chips every time and great customer service. It's the one to eat from.

I'm a delivery rider and had to collect some items from here recently. The girl had a face like thunder and slapped the food down on the counter. Seems extremely rude. Don't think I'll bother to come here as a customer or bother to collect orders from this restaurant again.

Have not been here in years but so glad that we went back just on a whim and a yearning for proper fish and chips What a revelation perfectly cooked fish crispy batter delicate flaky fish and proper chips with exceptional curry sauce,reasonable price what more can you ask for?Coming from a seaside town i know decent chippy and this one is definitely the one to go to in Cheltenham ,Can't wait for my next visit alsothe staff are extremely friendly and helpful

2nd time in a couple of weeks that I have visited. I used to live in leckhampton as a child and remember the Big Fish. Very happy with the fish and chips. Haddock cooked to order and the batter wasn't greasy. Fish kept in a box separate from the chips so prevented the sweating . A nice touch was some free homemade tartar sauce, very much appreciated. Would visit again.

Great staff. 4 stars as the chips weren't quite right on Friday 09/04/2021. Maybe the oil needed changing?
