The used to be award winning restaurant and takeaway. It was greasy non crispy batter that was slimy and difficult to pick up to eat. Chips were tasteless and greasy. Portion sizes very small. Not worth the money. Very disappointed.

I’m not in the habit of leaving a bad review but I don’t want others to waste their money. I ordered a chicken fillet supper and a haggis supper. As you can see from the menu it says 5 pieces but I only got 1. I questioned this twice and was told that’s what it is. They also gave me a red pudding supper by mistake so I had to go back to get it changed. The worst part of it all was the red pudding supper which I used my fingers to check and tear it open was then served to my mum and dad who ordered after me. Disgusting!

This chipper has really went downhill from its hey days. Back in the day if you wanted a chipper on a Saturday or Sunday evening you needed be there by 5pm or the queue was out the door, down the street & round the corner with queue times of 50-60 minutes. The chipper was that good & very popular with many making a 60 mile round trip! Those days are gone! The Bervie Chipper is under new management again. In my last review I generously rated this chipper as decidedly average. This chip shop is never my first choice. However we were hungry and thought we’d try again. The new owners have stripped back the menu (I don’t know when they took over so maybe they were still finding their feet. The fish supper portions were huge (fish & a half) the chips were plentiful too. The chips were well cooked (soft & fluffy on the inside) the batter was quite crispy and both the fish & the chips had a brown colour to them. (Too many chips shops serve really pale chips, still hard on the inside. I would call in again. However prices are getting prohibitive and a chipper supper looks like it’ll just be a treat or for a special occasion.

This visit was an example of never go back. The Bervie Chipper, or The Bridgend Restaurant as it was many years ago, has long held a place in our hearts. For many years it has not been the place in which my Mum worked as a young woman, the place of my childhood, or have the reputation that gave it the title of No.1. However, it could be relied on for a reasonable fish supper. However, it no longer achieves even that. We went in for a sit down fish supper. We found no table service, our supper served as if it was a take out, no metal cutlery, not even a slice of bread or the option of a hot drink. The fish supper was less than mediocre. The Bervie had a far-reaching reputation when it was really good, even before the No.1 status, but it really needs to advertise what it was.

We had a takeaway on our way home from holiday. Both had scampi and chips. It was awful. The scampi was overcooked and the chips were soggy and anaemic. Only ate it as we were hungry but felt like giving it to the seagulls nearby. It was also served in a paper bag!!!?? Never had that before. The Bervie chipper used to have a good name in the area-don't know what has happened to it. Won't go there again.

If you know the reputation of this chipper from 20/30/40 years ago you’ll be left sorely disappointed. The two different owners back in the day knew how a proper fish supper should be. Unfortunately different owners have cut corners and standards have dropped. However from the recent visit (the first in probably over 6 years. We had an award winning chipper close by. However that’s got different owners and has fallen down too (see my other reviews)) The Bervie Chipper has improved, its now a “bog standard chipper” nothing special, but nothing really wrong. At 5pm on Saturday it was dead. One person in front of me at takeaway and three covers in restaurant. Back in the days of Jennie Alison if your didn’t go to the chipper on a Saturday before 5pm the queue was out of the door and halfway down the street! We all had fish suppers. The standard size was decent sized and the chips were good. The two pensioner suppers were also a resonable size. Almost £18 for 1 supper & 2 “halves” that’s the going rate I’m afraid. The food was all cooked to order so it was fresh. I would go again, but it certainly won’t be a weekly event like it was many years ago.

After a two hour walk along the beach at Montrose a fish supper was in order. With memories of this place's reputation from 25 years ago we visited albeit fully aware the reputation had long since dissipated. Firstly there is the bizarre ordering process (carry out) of negotiating your way to the front past waiting customers in a loosely formed queue to place your order at the till and pay before returning to the end of the queue rather than just placing your order with the fryer who you have to walk past twice. This adds 5 to 10 minutes to your wait. The chips were well below average. The fish was a good piece of fish but the batter was very poor. You really could have done with a fork as the whole lot instantly dismantled itself when you tried to eat it. The fact the fish hadn't been allowed to drain meant the box was swimming in grease. Not a gastronomic masterpiece by any means. Add to that the price of £7.45 when I think my much better local is chancing its arm at £6.15.

Had an average supper from here. Asked if veggie burgers were an option and was told in a snotty manner “no - everything is cooked in beef dripping anyway, so we don’t do veggie burgers” by a woman who clearly doesn’t know the difference between a vegan and a vegetarian. Most chippers these days have veggie burgers, and they cook them in dripping without any issues. The portion of chips I had were quite soggy and not the best. Will travel up to stonehaven for a decent chipper next time. Snotty lady if you read this - a vegetarian is someone who doesn’t eat meat. Unless a veggie burger cooked in beef dripping suddenly turns to steak, we shouldn’t have a problem.

Went to the Bervie Chipper last Tuesday night. Had intended to walk to Gourdon as it was a warm evening to give The Quayside a go but basically couldn't be bothered. (I don't drive). Years ago this chipper was great but it seems to have declined in recent years giving me the impression that the staff don't really know how to fry food properly. Or is it the oil they're using? Anyway previous visits have been disappointing with fish and king ribs fried to an inch of their lives. The sit-in area looks tired and needs updating and not always very warm either. Food quality can be a bit hit and miss. Anyway I wasn't expecting anything great but I was hungry so I thought I'd give them another chance. Ordered the fish supper which priced at £6.95 seemed reasonable. The female staff member who served me was pleasant and friendly. I didn't have to wait too long. Took the supper home to eat. The fish was actually okay, a good size portion, batter quite crispy. Chips were well cooked and tasted fine. All in all a good enough visit however they really need to improve on consistency, also need to realise that their local competition is producing much tastier food and up their game.

Once upon a time the Bervie Chipper was the place to go for your fish and chips - it even won awards around about 1997 - so it saddens me to write that this once dependable chipper has just served me one of the worst fish and chips I can ever remember trying to consume. My wife and I sat in the restaurant area and both ordered the fish (battered) and chips plus bread and butter with tea.Upon the food arriving the bread looked as though it had been buttered earlier in the day and left out, the fish and chips looked very unappealing. Tasting the chips made us both comment that they could easily have been oven chips or left overs re-heated, hard to tell! The fish was the major disappointment - tasteless and God only knows what sort of batter it was done in.We both ate a couple of mouthfuls and gave up - absolutely disgusting. Mentioned this to waitress who was disappointed to hear our comments but cleared our plates away and disappeared.

As I live local I have been a regular here on and off over the years, often having a bad Experiance then eventually giving it another try to see if it had improved any, but I will NEVER return here again. The staff are the most ignorant I have ever experienced in my life, more interested in staring at the TV that is never off than customer service!£6.90 for a small greasy fish and chips which were like a child's portion! The young girl with long hair who "served" me asked if I wanted salt and vinegar...then literary threw my fish and chips onto the counter and immediately turned away, ignorant is an understatement! I seriously hope the owners/ management are reading this, they seriously need to take notice as discussing with friends and family who also used to frequent this chipper, they are not going to have a business left much longer with this standard of staff. Frequented this establishment on a regular basis as a child and teen, and had not been back for many years, and can I say, that the Bervie Chipper is NOT in Montrose, but in Inverbervie. Was unsure of what to expect due to mixed reviews. On arrival, just after opening time, we were seated quickly. It was fairly quiet with only one other table occupied. Our order was taken quickly. And as it was quite chilly, out waitress brought out a heater and set it up next to wall, adjacent to our table, for extra warmth. Based on previous reviews about the place being cold, I assume that this is an attempt to warm it up, and it is succeeding.Food came quickly. We ordered a mock chop, a king rib, a battered haddock and a chicken nuggets .... all meals with bread and butter and tea. amply supplies of tartare and other sauces were provided. As we neared the end of the meal, we were offered a top up of tea. The total cost of the meal was about £28. So with an average of £7 a head, we thought this to be quite reasonable. If you are unfamiliar with the restaurant, there is ample free parking across the road in the town square. It is also on a main bus route.Negatives: It was chilly till the waitress brought the heater.... perhaps heating on continually for the first couple of hours till it warms up might help. It didn't open until 430pm on a Sunday. We were visiting elderly relatives, and would have liked to have gone out earlier with them. I suspect that much business is lost because of this. So overall, would I go back? Yes!!!

I have always wanted to try the Bervie Chipper as it had a very good reputation in years gone by. After todays experience of overcooked dry fish in cold unpleasant surroundings I can only recommend that people should steer clear of this establishment. My haddock in breadcrumbs was fried to a deep brown colour and proved a challenge to cut through with a knife ( my husband's fish was the same). It was dry and unappetising and the accompanying bread ( with spread) was less than fresh. This was mentioned to the man cooking behind the counter but there was no offer of recompense and no apology. At £20 for 2 meals (no drinks) we won't be back !

I had heard that the 'bervie chipper' in Inverbervie was a decent fish and chip shop so after a visit to Dunnottar Castle myself my partner and my daughter decided to have some fish and chips. My first impression was shock at the price as it was a pound more expensive than any other fish and chip ship I have visited. The staff were somewhat unfriendly when I said I thought the price was a bit steep. The fish and chips themselves were a real let down. The fish was spongy and gooey. The batter like nothing I have seen before and the chips appeared to be re-heated. But worst of all was the smell of old cooking oil. When we took our fish and chips back to complain the manager was extremely unhelpful. He stated that we were not getting our money back and offered no alternative telling us not to come back if we were not happy. Shocking customer service and I will most certainly heed his advice and not go back and I suggest that anyone who reads this post does likewise.

The address of this restaurant suggests that it is in Montrose , but it is in Inverbervie . The first time the wife and I have visited the Bervie chipper for a good while but will definitely be the last . The Haddock fish was a very small portion in the hardest greasiest over cooked thick batter to the point of nearly burned I have ever had and un eatable and it wasn't , with equally greasy small fish inside . A friend that was with us had exactly the same view and his was left as well . Not only that when I complained that it was the worst ever that I had ever had and to be passed onto to ever was in charge . A definite not interested attitude was portrayed with no sign of a supervisory member of staff coming near us . Also advertised is Bread and Butter included , definitely not butter , it is cheap margarine . I can see by a lot of the other reviews a lot more people have had the same experience .As you can imagine no tip was left .Luckily the pot of tea was OK to wash away the grease .

Whilst the food and service was very good, it was most disappointed that we had to sit in a very cold restaurant and with our coats on to keep warm. At the same time the seating was a little cramped so all in all these points distracted one from what should have been a pleasant experience.

Now understand the mixed reviews. We arrived too late to sit in so took a carry out. Pleasant service but food v disappointing.Breaded fish must have been fried at least twice - coating very dark and hard, fish not great. Chips medium sized and greasy at best, many very small, thin and hard. Husband's steak pie was rated "good", otherwise this would have been a 1 rating. Overall a waste of money. Will not be back.

The food was cooked freshly when ordered, with both the fish and chips nicely cooked. The staff were friendly and the price, given the good size of the portions, was very reasonable. The fish could have done with a slightly lighter batter, but other than this a very pleasant meal.

Good break between Ellon and Dundee by the coast road. Better than average chippie. Pleasant, clean premises, Staff pleasant and efficient. 2 pensioner's breaded haddock suppers with tea / coffee and bread & butter for £10.00 is good value. Breaded fish fresh and nicely cooked. Good chips, not greasy. Food served on fish shaped platters. Would skip on the white bread and marg next time. Tea and coffee OKWould go back

I have been a regular customer for many year of the Bervie chipper, it has been a bit hit or miss over the years....but today was the final straw! My fish supper was in edible and went straight in the bin! To pay £6 for such rubbish was a disgrace and I shall NEVER return. The fish was fried to within an inch of its life, it was like a lump of rubber, the batter was rock solid and couldn't be cut with a knife, so say it was well done is an understatement! I was going to take it straight back and complain but decided the bin was the only place for it. The staff also need to learn some manners, the young woman who served me could certainly do with some training! All in all a disgraceful experience and they should be ashamed of the quality of the 'food' they sell!

What do you say about a good chippie? Well this one is friendly and has the really well fried chips, burgers and from the look on my friends faces, excellent fish. Just what you want at the sea side.

We tried this chipper on Wednesday evening and I have to say this was the worst fish and chips I have ever tried to eat. The chips were made from frozen chips, not what you would expect from a traditional chip shop, I'm not even sure the fish was cooked from fresh the batter was so flat not the crispy fluffy batter usually used. The whole supper was running with grease so bad I left half of it! Something I have never done anywhere before!!!!

The Bervie chipper is quite local to us and we use the take away now and then, the food is pretty standard chipper fayre, bit of a variation in portion size sometimes...depends who is serving...often young girls who seem to give tiny portions for some reason, had to complain on my last visit due to this. The biggest problem they seem to have is very poor staff training...always chatting amounst themselves while serving you, sometimes without even looking at you...a bit of courtesy would be appreciated! I notice the restaurant is always very quiet now, even on weekends..

We were travelling from Dundee back up to Inverness. It was mid afternoon on Sunday 21 October, and we wondered if the Bervie Chippy would open in the afternoon. Managed to find a tel phone number. Asked if they were open? the reply was how long would it take to get there? we were about a half hour drive away. We got there pretty much as we said to the staff member. They were open, and had a couple of customers at the counter. We were greeted in a very friendly manner.Of course, we ordered Haddock and Chips, which came with tea and bread and butter. We were not disappointed! Wonderful! Fish was very plump and fleshy and gorgeous light fluffy batter. Oooo, it was to die for. we were the only diners, with a few customers popping in.We shall be back when we travel that way again soon. Thanks everyone. Keep on serving the Best Fish and Chips in Scotland!!

I have recently moved to Inverbervie and have been to the chipper quite often as the fish and chips is great, I can't really comment on the rest of the menu as I can't see past good old fish and Chips. Prices are reasonable and good portions.

ordered to take away three haddock suppers, they were absolutely disgusting. The chips were soggy, looked and tasted as if they had been cooked the night before and fried again, the fish was greasy and tasteless.Altogether really disappointing as we have been here before and never experienced food of this sort. will not return again in a hurry.

What more can be said. Been a few times before but on this occasion my wife and I stopped off on an impuluse in the middle of a wet Saturday afternoon.Friendly welcome, good service and fantastic fish and chips. Can't wait to return. The 3 for atmosphere was because we were the only customers. Been there when it was very busy and a great feeling about the place. The score is therefore really no reflection on The Bervie Chippie or staff.

Avoid like a Covid Out Break, First impressions of the out side was what the Hell have we booked , its tired and outdated exterior greated us, As we walked in to the main entrance we were greeted with a closed reception desk with a closed blind and a smell I have never encountered before, and I've done a few jobs in my life. We made the decision to ask at the pub next door about our booking and to be fair the bar made was nice I can't falt her, she gave us the room key and told us where to go but they weren't serving food this night, thank God the local Indian restaurant got our custom. On inspection of the building it was as tired on the inside as it was on the outside. The floor was moving in places under the carpet. Fire door not closing on the landing and the fire escape door on our floor would need to be kicked open in the event of something happening. The room was clean but am glad am close to my partner as the toilet door in our room slid close and we had to put the TV up loud when It was in use. We never went for breakfast, so we could make a quick escape in the Morning. It's well over priced for what you get.

When it takes less time for your food to arrive than it does to order it something is far wrong! Self service is great when it works. It does not work here 20 minutes standing in a queue to place my own order, the woman at the till was so slow and seemed to be completely unaware of the situation. Food was decent enough and arrived after 10 mins but the service, was terrible with dirty dishes everywhere, no condiments on the table and the place was very cold. Same story in the shop. Huge queue for the post office but no one serving the other till. Typical Inverurie food experience "that'll do" attitude that 99% of people are so used to they are now blind to it.

We had quite a disappointing experience, we booked the room on the Thainstone house website, we paid extra for a larger bed "super king deluxe" and some extras like a fruit platter, when we arrived they gave us the wrong sized bed, was a standard double when we paid for a super king deluxe, there was also no fruit platter. We were confirmed on the booking for the restaurant, but the restaurant was closed. Instead, they served us in the bar on weird low lounge chairs. It felt a bit silly making us eat in an area that's designed as a lounge, low slouch chairs, etc. They gave 3 different reasons as to why we couldn't eat at a table, considering they have 3 other rooms designed for dining it seemed a bit of a bad decision, other guests came in and looked pretty cheesed off at the arrangements. The gym and pool were really run down. It's not the sort of place you expect when you pay well over £300 for the entire experience. For that price and the house reputation we expected something really nice, I had to pretend to be happy as I didn't want to stress my girlfriend out, we had driven down from the Highlands for her to have a medical procedure at Aberdeen hospital, I thought it would break the journey up and make my girlfriend less nervous to spend the night in a posh hotel, I was mistaken. The one thing that saved this was that the food was amazing, but be warned, a pint of standard beer is £12. I left feeling like I had been really ripped off, wouldn't mind paying more if the place met the expectations.

We prefer the Inverurie one to Elgin or the Inverness ones. Fast service, quieter, consistently lovely food & friendly staff.
