So who was Bennett? The ubiquitous Gordon? The friendly ghost who pops into his local when it's quiet? The Shropshire lad who built aqueducts? How did Bennett meet his end? There was serious civil war going on in the 1640's, so was he Cavalier or Roundhead? Why bring up these imponderables? Well if we didn't, the review would be too short. Menu choice, food quality, service, atmosphere, value - excellent. Thanks and well done to Grace and the team, comfortable five stars. Get yourself to Bennetts End and go no further.

Bennetts End Inn, is a traditional English pub. The owners have made it a lovely inviting, friendly environment, and the food was phenomenal. We had a Sunday roast, the portions were very generous and the beef was cooked to perfection. We were a table of five and every plate was empty. If you have room after the dinner I would definitely recommend one of their homemade desserts. I had sticky toffee pudding which is traditionally quite a heavy dessert but this one was light and fluffy and perfectly balanced with the sauce and ice-cream. We will certainly be back again.

We went for Sunday dinner as we were staying fairly local. We were running late due to a walk overrunning and then getting a little lost, but we called and they were lovely about it and held the table. There was a warm welcome and we sat near the fire. The food was delicious, lemon and thyme chicken and roast beef (cooked to perfection), great selection of veg. If were ever in the area again we would definitely go back. One of the best we've had. We didn't realise you had to keep driving down the lane as our sat nav took us took the top of the lane. But it is right down at the bottom! Hence the name. End.

A great off-the-beaten-track gem of a gastro pub with lovely views over the aqueduct and valley beyond. Recently taken over by a lovely couple who are clearly putting their stamp on it. Great menus (2 in fact!), with lots of choice. We had the pork belly and rump steak and they were cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. The white chocolate and Baileys cheesecake was simply delicious - there’s clearly a talented chef behind those kitchen doors! Service was great and friendly. Testament to a well-run family business. The portion of chicken and leak pie was smaller than a vanilla slice , not value for money . Myself and sister in law had the burger and chips , tasted fine , but sister in law was sick during the night and myself had diarrhoea all day Thursday 25th May , the only meals we had different from my brother and wife made us ill . will not eat there again until chef replaced and food quality improves . We haven't been to Bennets End at Hope Baggot for a while but we received the same warm welcome from Pete & Di. The place is always comfortable and the locals friendly. Di has taken over the kitchen and now does all the cooking herself and I must say her cooking is just as good as any of the chefs they've had there. I had the roast pork which was delicious and my husband had the roast beef. He hates to see any fat on his meat and asked for extra lean beef and when it arrived there wasn't a hint of fat in sight. He said the meat was very tasty and tender. The selection of vegetables was beautifully cooked and was served with real home made gravy. We (mum, dad, 2 teenagers and a dog) visited on an early January Saturday early in the evening. The Inn has a small front bar but a larger rear bar with an open fire which was roaring and restaurant area. All 5 of us were warmly welcomed. The dog was welcomed with a water bowl and a biscuit. There was only one other couple in the rear bar eating who seemed to be really enjoying their food. Whilst the adults enjoyed a couple of pints of Ludlow Gold bitter (very nice!), the young uns had soft drinks. We ordered food off the specials board; 2x steak and ale pie and 2x burgers. All the food was excellent homemade fare, freshly cooked and piping hot. The 4 meals, 2 soft drinks and 4 beers cost less than £60 which seems very good value. We had a pleasant evening and should we be in the area again we wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Reasonably good pub food. A standard menu. I had the brie which was actually really tasty; not heavy at all. Steak was cooked well and wasn’t fatty. Chips were great and I had no real problems with the food at all. However for two people who had a starter and main each and four drinks between them, only one being alcoholic, I felt £55 was a little steep. Would have been happier paying £40-£45 which would have bumped this up to 4 stars.

We went to Beenets End a couple of times last year and the food has always been good. In September it was taken over by new owners and I have to say the food is as good as it has always been, if not better. We had Sunday lunch. My husband said his roast turkey was delicious. I had lamb shank which was beautifully tender and had really good flavour. The food had plenty of lovely rich home made gravy, which is good because we usually have to ask for more. On our plate we had 4 good sized, absolutely perfect oven roasted potatoes, crispy roast parsnips and cauliflower and then the vegetable bowl arrived with boiled new potatoes, carrots, swede, broccoli and kale all cooked beautifully. A thoroughly enjoyable meal, with good sized portions obviously cooked by someone who really knows their food. Good value too.

I was sitting down enjoying my food when I notice that the bartender has his phone out and keeps taking pictures of 2 other younger individuals and this made me feel very uncomfortable due to them laughing and being unsure as to whether they were taking pictures of me and my family. I am writing this review because I was so annoyed that a special occasion was completely spoiIt. I wish that I had known in advance that it was under new management (a previous visit in Aug/Sep had prompted me to make this booking for 10 people for Sunday lunch) A hand written menu should have alerted me to what was to follow. Luke warm soup for some, leaves with prawns chilli dip were nothing more than some very poorly presented iceberg lettuce , for others. Roast beef was not from a joint and was very poorly presented and as for Yorkshire pudding, a flat unappetising disaster. I was so disappointed. I didn't complain at the time because I was very upset and knew that what should have been a happy family occasion would have been spoilt by an atmosphere. Not a pleasant experience at all. We will never go again.

I can sum this pub up in one word and that one word is AWESOME! As of August 2015 it's been under new management, the gastro clap trap has gone and in its place is quality home cooked food, filling, satisfying and fulfilling. We were tired of the plastic chain pubs, the ones that are the same Lands End to John o'Groats. We wanted a pub, one where we could relax, where we could enjoy good company and a great ambiance, one that had a good choice of drink and food and one that had "something unique and different" to eat and with the Bennetts End Inn we were not let down. If you want quality home cooked food that is cooked and not merely taken from a container and warmed up then this is your place. Food cooked to perfection with flavours and smells that dance with each other on all your senses is the epitome of a good pub and this place has it all in abundance. How about well priced menus, this place ticks that box too unless you think 3 courses of lovingly prepared food with large portions and 2 rounds of drinks for 2 people costing under £40 is expensive but I certainly don't. The vegetables were tasty and fresh, the meat so well cooked the lamb fell cleanly from the bone, whitebait full of taste with a crispy light coating, the food was superb. the welcome from the new owners and locals alike was warm and welcoming. I am disabled and as I approached the doors some of the men in the bar jumped to hold the doors open and the landlady quickly showed us to a table. Once there the service was professional but efficient and very very friendly. The landlady said that as we were approaching the season she would soon be displaying game on the menu, however she said the Gammon and chips, lasagne, fish and chips, the normal expected pub grub would also still be there satisfying everyones palette. She also said any changes to the menu they would be happy to try and accommodate. This is a great little local pub. If it were my local I would be a regular visitor, for the fun, laughter and banter as much as anything else and of course the food. However it isn't my local and it is 90 miles from my home but I shall still be a frequent visitor. If you are looking for a pub with great ambience, one that is friendly and accommodating, a pub with quality food with good sized portions utilising fresh ingredients and with all that still have a reasonably priced bill at the end of the evening then stop because the Bennetts End Inn is all that and some.

We were on holiday in the area and found this pub on tripadvisor before the new owners had taken over but decided to go ahead anyway. What a great find! Di and Pete are lovely people and made us feel at home. The food was very good and we ate there 3 out of 7 nights. The atmosphere was also conducive to a great relaxed evening. All in all an excellent find. To the gentleman and his party on the 18th - there were other diners as we were eating there also and if you want a better selection of wine we would suggest that you find a wine bar not a pub. As you are a local we find your attitude to a fine local business somewhat puzzling. We would certainly recommend this pub to anyone in the area.

We had read good reviews so booked a birthday meal on a Friday night. We were the only diners and felt conspicuous walking through the bar dressed up. The service was attentive but basic as we're the tables etc. Main clue came when there was no wine list " red or white ?". The food was basic. We were expecting a bit more gastro. Our mistake but others should beware. I would like to support a local business but not this one.

This was an amazing restaurant. It has recently been taken over by Pete and Diane (AKA Pete fish and Mrs pickles lol!). Although this was our first visit to this restaurant they made us feel extremely welcome and engaged in lengthy conversations. we had an amazing meal which was extremely good quality and excellent value for money. The range of food available was great with new menu ideas being looked into for the future. Thanks ever so much to Pete and Diane for making our evening enjoyable.

A last minute change in some plans took us to book a table for 8 of us, no problem. We arrived and were welcomed, and found out there were new owners, Pete and Diane. There were plenty of staff around and all were helpful. There was no rushing to take our order which was fine, we were out for the evening and didn't want to be herded through. We all ordered, and the food started to arrive, well presented and wholesome. Whilst we only intended to have two courses we ended up having three. I had a ribeye for my main and it was cooked perfectly, though my chunky chips were slightly under done but quite edible. All of my group were 'chuffed' with the food we had and the service we received. As a group that had not been together for a whil, we just wanted to sit around the table all evening and chat and this was no bother, we had a great evening and were later joined by our hosts, Pete & Diane. We didn't leave until it was quite late, great hospitality.I have read some other negative comments left in the last week which are fair to make and all this can help any business improve. I do however think that sometimes you have to make allowances for those who are starting out on a new venture and show some encouragement. I doubt there is an establishment on the whole of trip advisor that has no negative posts. I would encourage everyone to make a visit and enjoy the whole experience. It ticks my box.You are definitely on my list of place to go in the future. Best of luck, I'll be back!

Having spent a few days in your fantastic surroundings, we decided to have lunch at The Bennetts End Inn after having it recommended from the lodge owner. As usual I had a look on trip advisor to get the general feel. There was a very long negative review! I looked at this guys history on trip advisor, and it would seem that he complains everywhere he goes!!!!!! For a free meal one can only presume! So, as a family we descended on the Inn. We were met with friendly staff, served great food and left very satisfied. Give it a go if you're in the area.

This used to be great pub: but after being ignored by 3 staff behind the bar when I arrived with my wife for a meal - we left and went elsewhere. A great shame the new owners obviously understand very little about the hospitality industry

Went on the 24th and arrived in time for the early bird menu. Staff very friendly and food was very nice. They were prepared to swap the starter on the early bird menu for something else. You could tell that the new owners were still adjusting to their new surroundings but I'm sure it will be a big success with a few tweaks. I'd recommend they extend the early bird to 730/8 and also invest in some signs to direct from the main road.

We chose this Pub for a meal in the recommendation of the owners of our B and B, and noticed the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor, although we noticed it has changed hands within the last two weeks. We were therefore looking forward to enjoying our last meal out on our Shropshire break. When we sat down we were brought a hand written menu, and were quite shocked at the really limited choice on offer (the sample menu on their website had a tempting variety of meals on offer, apparently subject to change). My husband ordered the gammon steak which came with french fries and peas and pineapple. I ordered chicken schnitzel with mayo, salad and french fries. Both meals were disappointing and very mediocre. The gammon and chicken were not cooked very well, and there were no vegetables on offer to cheer the plate up a bit. The french fries were poor.My husband never leaves food on his plate but did tonight! When we were asked by the new owner how it was, we told him our disappointment. He apologised and said they were trying to sort their menu out and didnt know what else to say.On the odd occasion we have commented on a below par dinner in other establishments, something I dont really like doing, it is normal for the chef or Manager to offer some sort of compensation, ie free desseet or drink or reduction off the bill, which didnt happen tonight.we do feel for the new owners as they were clearly struggling tonight, possibly with a very young inexperienced chef , and the current reputation of The Bennett End will quickly suffer as a result of such disappointed customers.it would appear that Sundays may be a better time to visit, as per the last review, and the only writing on the blackboard related to Sunday lunches.

New Owners Peter & Diana are doing a great job in taking on this lovely little Inn. Dined here last Sunday for Lunch and had the Roast Beef complete with crispy roast potatoes, carrots, boiled mini potatoes, broccoli, fabulous cauliflower cheese & huge Yorkshire pudding. Don't how we managed but the Pecan Pie & Icecream was too tempting to resist & we weren't disappointed. The venue was well supported and the service was speedy and the kitchen didn't seem to have any problems with putting out all the meals. We wish Peter & Diana all the best and keep up the good work. Only suggestion is to put a small brown sign showing

A friend and I went for dinner on 02/09/2015 we were met with a warm welcome and shown to a table, while the décor is rustic but clean this adds to the charm of the pub.The food was delicious, sadly we were too late for the 15mile menu which I think is an excellent idea. What we enjoyed the most about the meal was its local produce cooked to perfection and real mash which seems to be rare these days.Good honest food in a homely location.

Marvelous family dinner out on a Thursday evening. No booking but no problem, and they accommodated our small children wonderfully as well. Everything all of us had was was uniformly excellent, as were the local brews accompanying. Even an excellent view of the distant hills through the garden despite a misty, rainy evening. All in all, a superb country pub experience that we would highly recommend.

On Sunday we had booked a table of 5 for Sunday lunch . We have eaten with you a few times before and always been welcomed with a smile great service and food . Unfortunately on this occasion this was not the case on arriving it took 20 minutes before anybody came to the bar to say hello take a drink order or dhow us where our table was . We the sat down and waited another 25 minutes for somebody to come and take our food order .after another long wait our starters arrived these were OK and everyone enjoyed these but again it took along time for anyone to clear the table and take another drink order . At this point there was only 5 tables of people including our self's so it was not like they were over run . Then the Sunday lunch arrived 4 of the group had beef and I had lamb .the beef was over cooked tough ,fatty ,and they were unable to eat it .the gravy taste burnt and very strong . We spoke to the lad who had been serving about the fact you couldn't eat the beef and all we got was OK .knobody came over to speak to us or apologise and they were still on the bill . We have been a few times for meals and always enjoyed the service the atmosphere and food however due to the poor service food and atmosphere this time I very much doubt we would return .

Just went out on a random Friday night with the family (6 of us) we did book but would of got in if we hadn't. Sat outside and had a drink looking at the the views. Beer was good and nice and local!! Menu was nice and took us a while to decide. We all had starters and a main. The good was fresh, tasty and we'll presented!! The bar man was friendly and the waitress was very good. I'm sure it won't be long before we go back!

Stayed in an excellent cottage five minutes walk from the inn, which was ideal. Although 'unprepossessing' on the outside, once inside, the attentive and pleasant staff together with the good quality food make for a great experience. Just had a lunchtime snack on the Saturday we arrived but returned on two evenings, once for the '15 mile menu' and once for the à la carte. In both cases our meals were first class, well prepared, nicely presented and reasonably priced. Can definitely recommend, but check the website for opening times and book if going at the weekend.

We were a very large group of 5 families descending on the bennetts end for Sunday lunch on Father's Day. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was good hearty pub grub. It is a beautiful setting too with rolling hills in the background.

I visited Bennetts End twice in a week and on both occasions had a very enjoyable meal. Staff are welcoming and friendly, the food is very good and the 15 mile menu is great value. My first visit with friends was later in the evening so we had the a la carte menu, the food was very good but on the second visit (with a cousin) we were earlier and able to have the 15 mile menu. I had the same main that I'd had earlier in the week (not because I'm boring but because I'd enjoyed it!), the portion was just as generous but for an extra £2 I also had a starter and dessert, fantastic value. Sometimes these special offer menus are of a lesser quality or amount than the regular meals but I can assure you that this is not the case here. The menu choice for the 15 mile menu is slightly reduced but there is still something for everyone.I will happily recommend this place to anyone looking for good food, produced locally, cooked beautifully and served by friendly staff.

Arrived without booking a table mid week during a weeks stay in nearby Ludlow. We were quickly seated overlooking the countryside - just perfect. The food was first class & we sampled all 3 courses! The pub itself may lack 'curb appeal' but the food, relaxed atmosphere & restaurant views lived up to reviews I had read on Trip Advisor.

OK so it was March, but I fully expected, given the reviews to find this busier than just the 3 of us and one couple. The food was excellent, the service good, but the atmosphere lacking. I am sure if busier it would feel so much more vibrant. Don't be put off by this. In summer I am sure it would be different.

we always try to come here when we can get in and don’t fancy cooking one ourselves. the meat selection is always good and very generous, their roast potatoes are the best - lovely and crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. it is a carvery so can help yourself. they unfortunately don’t have any mash but we just add extra roasties! their gravy is lovely and homemade with the meat juices in. the staff are lovely and attentive. our favourite place to go for sunday lunch!

We are regular visitors to the Red Lion in Myddle. We return every time because the food and service is second to none. We always receive a warm welcome and we know how hard Pete and Jackie and staff work to make sure that their guests are not disappointed. If you fancy a meal out around Shrewsbury (lunch or dinner) then look no further than the Red Lion. You won’t regret it.

We booked for dinner as we knew the White Lion had reopened for food with a new chef. We were not disappointed the food was delicious, we had the rib eye steak, the sea bass special and the penne vodka. All were beautifully cooked and served. The service was great and the staff were friendly. We will definitely be eating here again.

The service was friendly and the food absolutely first-rate. Can recommend the Ploughman’s which is loaded with cheese, really top notch ham, and lovely crusty bread. Would have loved to stay for cake but we were all too full.

Our second visit which was as good as the first. A great pub that has a mix of walkers/locals etc, very friendly & welcoming. Starters came with a lovely site salad(not the usual lettuce/tomato)but everything & fresh too. A sizzling steak on its way to a customer…we were sold on the smell as it passed by. We ordered ribeye, very nice & you cook it to your liking on the hot stone.
