Super nice Indian Restaurant. Lovely service and wonderful food! It was really delicious. There was more than enough food! I would definitely go there again

It was a very place with very good food. The taste was super. It was also very good service. I would go here again if i come around here.

Really nice Curry, but appalling slow service. 12 Diners in a 50+ cover restaurant and over an hour wait for food. Blamed the rugby on the TV, but main problem seemed that they were prioritising take aways. Spoiled a lovely evening with friends.

We visited the restaurant as we were staying in Box celebrating our friends 70th birthday in a house in the village. We were a party of 10 and we all agreed the food and service was excellent. The policy of bring your own alcohol worked really well. It was a Friday night and the place was full, testament to how good a curry restaurant this is.

We've used this restaurant for more than 5 years and we expect that to continue. The Chicken Shasliks were great - at their usual very high stand - and we were please to see friendly and helpful staff (who want to serve customers) back again. There was a period last year when the service was poor - we thought that we might not return. So full marks this week. And our thanks for the food and the welcome.

Terrible service, food is mediocre and often late (worst wait was 2hrs!). Shame but has put most locals off. Moonlight in Corsham is much better

Extremely friendly service, very clean and the portions were really generous. We arrived at 5pm for a meal, we had starters and a main each, food was piping hot and freshly made. Would highly recommend visiting, the food is lovely and it’s worth a visit if you are in the area.

Nett ist auch, dass man sich alkoholische Getränke selbst mitbringen darf, wenn man mit Softdrinks nicht ausreicht. Schade, dass wir nicht immer wieder kommen können.

This was my 1st time at an Indian restaurant and Hamza made it a truly exceptional experience! He reviewed the menu items and asked my preferences with meat and spices and guided me to making the best choices!!! Everything was hot and fresh and I would highly recommend this experience for any and every one!

Best curry house this side of the Mississippi. You haven’t experienced curry until you’ve been here. The smells. The tastes. The experience. The service is absolutely brilliant and always very welcoming. Couldn’t recommend The Bengal Bear in Box enough.

We went for my son's 55 birthday , as he lives in Box and Curries is his favourite! Monday and Wednesday's they have a special meal deal ! Food has always been good and plenty of it ! Too much for us all so we take it home what is left ,which last for at least a couple of more days ! What was amusing this time was ,we had to put our leftovers in the containers at the table ,we were told that would stop any muddles in the kitchen ! I have been to many Indian Restaurants and a few of them have been fantastic but I have to say that this is the best. Sadly we are not local. We were having a few days break in the area and decided to have an evening meal at the Bengal Bear. We both enjoyed our starters. From the extensive menu I had the lamb Tok Jal Misti as my main dish, which was excellent. The quality of the lamb was great and the portion was generous. My wife had the Lamb Malaber. She was full and could not eat the last piece of lamb so I finished it off for her. My immediate reaction was "Wow!". The flavours were really complex. On top of that the staff were genuinely friendly and obviously passionate about their food. This is a meal that I won't forget soon.

Went out with a group from work and was really looking forward to the meal as other people said it was great.Unfortunately was very disappointed as serious lack of flavour and the use of the food colouring was extreme excessive.Had garlic mushrooms which should had been labelled "turmeric mushrooms" because that was the over whelming flavour.Had Sagh Pohin which again was under whelming and very heavy on the turmeric.And the mixed grill which was a scrawny chicken leg which was very dry and tasteless, the tandoori chicken & lamb cubes didn't taste of anything but the kebab was inedible and bright purple!Real shame as won't bother returning.

The restaurant is set in a former pub, a beautiful historic building constructed from Bath stone and conveniently located just outside Box with the benefit of parking, well worth making the trip for. I rate The Bengal Bear very highly, neither myself or my friends and family have ever been disappointed with the food or the friendly service here, it really is one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve visited and its a real treat to get one of their fabulous curries. I’ve enjoyed meals in the restaurant and as take away, I am always impressed with the food either way which is always fresh, full of flavour and arrives piping hot.

Excellent food! The best Rogan Josh I’ve ever had. The Naan breads were fresh and warm. Pakoras and Bhajis were tasty. All the meats were succulent and tender. Bear in mind they don’t serve booze, but they let you bring your own and don’t charge a corkage service. The waiters are friendly and helpful. Couldn’t fault them and will eat here again. Good to see they use Perspex screens between tables and the waiters wear masks. But what was very encouraging was seeing them thoroughly sanitising the chairs and tables after every visit.

I visited The Bengal Bear twice during a 4 day visit to Box. I'm only sorry that I live 200 miles away otherwise this would be my 'go to' place for family events, takeaways etc. From the moment you enter you sense that the staff genuinely care about your experience. Hand gel is available and 'track and trace' information is requested. You are given time to make your menu choices. On both evenings Zak was taking care of my order and he could not have been more considerate. The portions are large and I felt a little embarrassed that I could not eat all the rice on both occasions. The food quality is excellent. I will definitely return if I visit the area again.

Went for early Saturday dinner and we were very impressed with the food and the service. Wide choice available on the menu, and both main dishes were very tasty and plentiful. Aloo gobi side dish contained far more potato than cauliflower, but this was only a very minor point.

Staying in Box for 4 nights. I read the reviews for this restaurant and was not disappointed. Lovely food and great service. We took our own wine and there was no charge for corkage and complimentary coffee. Felt very safe in these uncertain times. Well done Bengal Bear. 5 out of 5

Staying in Box for short holiday. Recommended The Bengal Bear Indian Restaurant. Did not disappoint! Does not hold an alcoholic licence so BYO (which we knew) so popped into the convenience store just down the road to pick up some alcohol. Popadum tray - lovely. Starters - I had prawn on puri and my husband chicken chat - absolutely delightful.Mains - I had the tandoori mixed grill, husband had the sizzling chicken, we shared Sag Paneer, Keema Rice and Peshwari Nan. All delightful. Portions are huge! Don’t eat lunch before you come!Staff - lovely, attentive.Dining Room - COVID-19 safety measures in place, details taken when we arrived for “track and trace”. Tables spaced 2 metres apart, clear screens in place separating diners, staff meticulously cleaning tables, chairs and menus between visitors. Very impressed.Overall - visit this lovely restaurant. Very safe in this current climate, staff delightful, food supreme!Well done Bengal Bear

This has got to be my favourite Indian/ Bangladesh restaurant near where I live. Great service, friendly staff. My weekly take away and sit in for special occasions with family. The food is top notch, the vindaloo to die for. Good sized portions,4 onion bahjis per serving! Ample parking, nice atmosphere.

We had a lovely experience here, we were staying nearby and drove past this restaurant during the day, quick glance at trip advisor made us book. So pleased we did, lovely food very tasty, but more the staff made sure we were100% happy, nothing was too much trouble. The owner took time to chat with us. Really lovely experience. Just found the staff unpleasant and arrogant. They seemed astonished I did not know it was a BYO. also very average food.

We have been eating at the Bengal Bear since it opened several years ago and have always been regaled with delicious food and generous hospitality. However last weekend we needed to add some extra spice to our drinks party buffet. Afzal prepared for us trays of delicious, freshly cooked samosas, pakoras, popadoms and chicken tikka kebabs, all with yoghurt dip and salad accompaniment. Every platter was cleared and the Bear will soon have some new customers!Excellent service.

Visited last night with a couple of mates from Bath. It was chucking it down with rain but the restaurant was half full. We all tried new dishes from the left hand side of the menu (Chef’s specials). We all agreed that the quality and quantity of the food was far superior to any Indian restaurant currently in Bath. I had a king prawn dish nicknamed the 8th wonder of the world. On the first mouthful the flavour and depth of the dish was so delicious it but back! We’re going to be going back to this one a lot more in the future. Don’t forget it’s a BYO, they only do soft drinks.

Over the years on the road in 30 + years as a sales manager i have had a lot of Indian food all over the country it took me until i retired to find this place on my doorstep(5 miles away) the food is in my opinion 2nd to none the staff are excellent and the setting is very good.

Ten of us ate here for a family celebration, and it was really lovely. The table was ready for us, the staff were very attentive and great with our 7 year old son, and the food came promptly. It was absolutely delicious and full of flavour. The portion sizes are enormous - so do bear this in mind when ordering. Would highly recommend!

Fancied an Indian and came across this place. Really friendly staff and the food is fresh and had some different dishes you don't normally find on a typical menu. A very nice evening all around. FYI it doesn't serve alcohol but you can bring your own and there is no corkage. Would definitively recommend to anyone

My husband and I decided to visit The Bengal Bear following recommendations by friends.We were warmly greeted by staff and our order was very promptly served. My husband chose the Tandoori Mixed Grill Balti with a Keema Nan which he said was delicious. I chose the Bengal Bear Special Balti which was lovely. Portions were huge.A very pleasant meal and thoroughly recommended.

Unexpected gem in Box, food was outstanding, service was equally good and the prices were very reasonable for the quantity of food. No drinks license so bring your own if you want a drink.

I am not a fan of Indian food but went out with friends, Service was excellent and very informative on the dishes, Had Samosa for starters which were very tasty and not too spicey, Chicken Korma was lovely and creamy, This is BYO restaurant which is good im, Price very reasonable overall I would dine here again.

We've been coming here for a while now and love it. The food is always delicious, the staff are incredibly friendly, and it's become a favourite of ours. We've both tried a range of dishes, each of them full of flavour and served piping hot.

We were very well looked after by Rukon and Lipu. They treated us extremely well. The curry was hot (temperature), the meat was melt in your mouth and the flavour was unbelievable. And very reasonably priced. Would reccomend for a great dinner.

Our second (or third visit) just we two today. We arrived a little early, parked easily and took a stroll around Box; it was a lovely evening. Back at the restaurant, our table was ready on time and we sat by the window. It was a little noisy as there was a family party on one table but that is pot luck now-days. We ordered a couple of popadums with the usual condiments but we also asked for some mint yogurt (sometimes known as Raita) which came in separate pot and was not part of the set. Then we ordered 2 chicken shashliks. They have no license at present so we took a bottle of Merlot but they happily provided appropriate wine glasses and some water. The bill was very modest, the food was excellent - possibly as good as we have ever eaten and so we left a good tip. Thanks so much.

This place is very small but beautiful. Food was good and excellent service.reasonable fast service if you concider how busy it was. They managed well with that busy. Recommended dish zalzala is my new favourite. Highly recommended we will be back...

I think we must have woken up our server when we walked in. He mumbled the whole way through and made us feel a bit of an inconvenience. However this was easy to ignore with how lovely the food is and quick the service was! I would definitely recommend but perhaps service with a smile should be remembered when customers walk in.

Having travelled all over the UK and eaten at many an Indian restaurant, I can say with certainty that the Bengal Bear is the best Indian restaurant/takeaway in the UK.

We have been coming here for several years now and it never falters. All the food is really tasty and fresh and nothing is too much trouble for the attentive,super polite, owner and his well organised staff. Nice atmosphere and always full so remember to book in advance.

A small, very friendly restaurant in a quiet Wiltshire village serving wonderful authentic Bengali cuisine. If you are staying in Box, you won't find anywhere else of culinary interest unless you drive out of town. But you don't need to! This place is really excellent

We visit this lovely restaurant regularly since we moved into the area last year. It is simply decorated with a good level of traditional background music. It's unlicensed, however, wine can be purchased in the store opposite or bring your own. The food is good and a varied menu means you'll find something to suit (intolerances are taken into account and veggie) and they are very good at guiding you and can make small adjustments to suit. The staff, especially Azfal and Gary, are very kind, polite; happy to chat but only when engaged. Food is fresh, cooked to order so sensible wait, but not instant, except poppadums! The portions are generous, too.

So pleased to have called into this restaurant. We did over order as the portions were massive. I really enjoyed the chicken biriani which was absolutely loaded with off the bone chicken. If we lived closer we would call in regularly.

Wow, what a find, one of the best Indian meals I’ve had in a long time, it took some time to arrive at the table but well worth the wait, and the prawns are really kingsize, I’ll be coming here again next time I’m in town . Fantastic .

Went in on Christmas eve and even though the restaurant was very quiet (the takeaway side was busy), we had a lovely meal. The food was generously portioned and very tasty. The staff are always friendly and helpful if you need to have any more info on a dish or even a recommendation. I would not, however, recommend their desserts as they all seem to be highly processed and their kulfi ice cream was disappointing. Overall, very good value for money and you can ask to have the leftovers put in a box to take home.

Lots of the locals have it as the number 1 indian. I went for a take out and there's more grease and oil than actual curry. The meat is very dry despite being coated in that much oil! Some of the guys I work with who are regulars have said the quality has dipped and I got the worst of it. Shame it didn't live up to expectation.I would still give it another try, it's just nothing to go out of your way for.

Though it is a Bangladeshi restaurant , a spicy authentic Indian food of good variety is available . The restaurant is manned by Muhammed , Afzal and Rupan lovely people who take care of their guests with kindness and warmth. Ambience is very good and there is bit of History behind it was interesting , it is constructed with Box Lime stone and probably a heritage building . One can see that it was "BEAR INN 1674" it was a Pub and a Bowling place some time before and the restaurant is in Existance for the last more than 4 years attracting good number of people particularly during weekends. One should not miss this restaurant serving Tasty food.

The worst chicken tikka masala I’ve ever come across, I’ve had Better from marks & Spensers. The chicken Korma was like a desert so much sugar added yuk. Chicken tikka starter like rubber no taste.. and thick glutinous pink yoghurt to go with it, Pilau rice just bit of food colouring placed on top. Nan bread for sure bought from Aldi.. defo not cooked on the premises, one very argumentative staff member telling me I was wrong, I’ve eaten many beautiful dinners in my 50 odd yrs also in India, and I would never like to repeat this experience again.

Had a takeaway wasn’t the best we have ever had x had a king prawn dish £13.50 and had 4 prawns in and wasn’t overly fab x ordered all the pickles and only got one x wouldn’t go again

Lovely tasty food, with lots of choice. Staff are friendly and lovely decor. One slight annoyance is we wasn't told when we booked they don't serve alcohol, which is fine, but had to dash to the local shop as can't have a curry without a beer!

Had dinner there tonight - excellent food, excellent service and very reasonable prices. The restaurant was packed which is testimony to how well liked this restaurant is. It was recommended to us by a local who frequents there regularly. The staff were extremely helpful and it was obvious that many of the diners were regulars. Top food - can highly recommend.

Had a lovely meal, each of us having different and everyone enjoyed, I am a wuss with spicy food so had a veg Korma which was really tasty with a Peshwari Nann.

One of the best Indian meals I’ve had ever, genuinely! Everything cooked to perfection and so tasty. We ordered takeaway as we were staying about 300 yards away and there was prompt service, very pleasant and the food was excellent, only sad we weren’t staying in Box longer to enjoy the food all over again.

We read a few bad reviews and wondered whether we should go, we took the chance and were so glad we did the service, quality and quantity of food was great, fortunately the hotel where we were staying told us they did not have an alcohol licence and you have to take your own, perhaps they should tell someone when they book a table, as we are not regulars there and did not know, all in all a great night.

My wife and I visited this place on a Friday night for a meal and we're really pleased with the surroundings, the staff, and more importantly the food. We had a comfortable table with very ambient lighting that made for a romantic evening. My wife is gluten, dairy, and egg free. This was fine they were able to recommend a number of dishes. The staff were friendly but not invasive, the food was really tasty and we would definitely return!

Spent 8 days in England and this was the best meal we had. Very nice interior with tablecloths and cloth napkins. Service was so polite and friendly, we felt very welcome. Wish we could go back!

The conversion from a pub to Indian restaurant/take away worked well. Both eating in and taking away are great options. The portion sizes are ample and the staff are very friendly and polite. It is pricey but you pay for what you get.

The friendly staff are polite and attentive without being annoying. It has a very good menu and the restaurant seems very popular. Our meals came in a reasonable time and was nice, although I have eaten better. It was cold in there, and I don’t think one heater is enough for such a large space. If I was in the area I would go there again.

Booked midweek so hopefully not so busy but it was! I have some allergy issues but they worked around this and my meal was just fantastic. All of us had a great time and enjoyed our fare... Only caveat to the experience was you need plenty of time as the food does take a little while to arrive - not just us but other tables too.... definitely will return...

Recently had a meal here which was good there was plenty of choice and as usual popadoms were quickly offered to you although unclear if they were complementary but it didn’t matter, we didn’t wait too long.

I have eaten at the Bengal Bear twice in the last month and many time before that so it fills me with sadness to have to let people know about the poor level of service I have experienced. I do want to say upfront though that the food there is very good, always, however unfortunately I have found the service to be incredibly slow and poor on my last two visits.

I've only eaten takeaways from here but I can happily say they are the best takeaway in the area. Staff...

The first thing to note is that the place in unlicensed, so you need to bring your own alcohol. There is a small convenience shop in Box where you can pick-up beer, wine, etc. We found the service very friendly and the place was buzzing on a cold Wednesday night. As for the food, the portions were good and all the dishes we had were flavoursome. But what made this place better than average was the excellent value for money.

I have been getting takeaways from here for over a year now and I haven’t tried everything on the menu yet but of what I have tried I must say I really like it.

First time we have tried the Bengal Bear. Had to get a take-out. It was excellent. Tasted freshly cooked. Loads of flavour and great sized portions (good for leftovers - Saturday lunch, yum).

We like a cheeky indian and since The Rajpoot closed we have struggled to find a replacement. This is another example of why really most people do a takeaway Indian. Popadoms were cold and yesterdays I would guess - I mean how do you get a basic so wrong? Staff were lovely and to be fair its very clean but at the end of the day it is about the food and this was very poor.

We booked our reservation 2 weeks in advance to say goodbye to friends in Box. The restaurant telephoned us on the afternoon to confirm our 8pm reservation. We arrived in good time but they didn’t provide a table until well past 9 pm. Despite prompting them and asking why we were unable to be sat down, no explanation was forthcoming. We got no food until gone 10pm by which time no-one in our party was still hungry. What we hoped to be a pleasant occasion was ruined by their failure to even sit us down or feed us in a reasonable time. Throughout this ordeal for our guests, who included a 90 year old who was unable to stand for long, they demonstrated indifference and contempt for their customers. A truly shocking experience. Whilst all this shambles was going on they continued to sit and serve smaller parties and takeaways so clearly they had simply failed to organise or honour our reservation for 12. Totally pathetic incompetence.

Recently I took my sons out for a meal at The Bengal Bear in Box, Wiltshire. The food was outstanding, only surpassed by the level of service. What we thought would be a simple process of choosing what we each fancied turned into a real education. For the carnivores (my three sons), Afzal offered marinaded or non-marinaded meat. For me, as a pescatarian, he advised me, based on questions he had asked, which of the fish dishes would be most to my liking. I ordered a dish called ‘Fish Molly’ which I had never tried before and it was absolutely delightful. All the staff were extremely polite and friendly, without being ‘over the top’. The presentation of the food and of the restaurant was impeccable. In summary, here’s what the Bengal Bear did well: - The key essentials were right – the food, the presentation, housekeeping standards – all fab!- The polite and attentive manner of the staff- Tremendous 'added value' during the ordering process to ensure that we made the best menu choices for each of us individuallyMany thanks! First time I had been this restaurant and was pleasantly surprised.The food was excellent.We had a party of vegans,vegetarians and omnivores and all went away more than satisfied.The service was polite and efficient .You have to bring your own alcoholic drinks but this was no problem.Would be happy to recommend a visit.

Popped in for a quick sit down curry as couldn't be bothered to cook or do any washing up.Very friendly service. Good sized restaurant. The menu is extremely varied and lots of interesting and different choices. I went for something very different and it was lovely.The portions were big and we ended up taking it home with us!Only downside is they don't have an alcohol licence but not the end of the world.

Popped in here on the way home. Nothing was too much trouble even re-arranging the tables to fit us in. I ordered the Madras and my partner had the Balti it was one of the best curries we have had.Will definitely pop in again and would highly recommend.Don't forget to take your own beer or wine as they only sell soft drinks........
