I'd really like to be more positive as the Lady who served us was really friendly and helpful, but.....on arrival we were told that the kitchen was short staffed (a common occurrence it seems from other reviews) and if we ordered from the menu it would be a 20-30 min wait. We'd just stopped off for a bite to eat mid-journey, so didn't want to wait long, and having explained to the lady at the bar that we were just after sandwiches, she said that she'd see if the kitchen could provide some bowls of chips at short notice. She returned from the kitchen saying we could have bowls of chips with bread and butter in around 5 mins. I went outside (we had the dog with us) to talk to my wife and son, and my wife then popped back inside to order two bowls of chips and a plate of bread and butter. The 5 mins became 20 and, as I was driving, I had to drink my single half pint of beer very slowly to make it last throughout the wait. I have to say that when the food arrived, the chips were the excellent home-cooked sort and the bread was equally nice, not the usual shop bought variety. However, and this is the major downside, more so than the wait. The 'bowls' were in fact tiny side-dishes. Between three adults there were approximately 30-35 chips total (a dozen-ish each) and 4 half-slices of bread. So the food was admittedly lovely, but there was barely enough for one of us, all for the princely sum of £10.50. At least the dog got a couple of free dog biscuits. Like I said at the top, the lady tried so hard to be helpful, but we ended up waiting ages and were served the tiniest of portions, so we will continue to drive past this lovely looking pub. Shame.

We definitely caught them on a bad day, a chef was out so service was slow..however, expectations weren't managed well. We were told a short wait and it was about 45 minutes - felt like if we were told it were longer it is easier to deal with. The pies tasted great, the hunters chicken was quite tough and bland. Overall was OK, imagine a good place when properly firing on all cylinders.

Very poor service We arrived to a pre-booked table and after 20 minutes of being seated we still had not had our drink and food order taken. After approaching a waitress and giving her our order we then waited another 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive. At this point we over heard other people in the pub was complaining about waiting over an hour for starters and returning them as the order was wrong. We walked out without drink or food and ate at a great pub down the road. I could understand if the pub was full however it was not even half full. Very poor service, we definitely will not be returning. Looking at the reviews we don’t seem to be the only ones who have experienced this issue. Sorry for the bad review but it was very poor.

It's a friendly pub with good food options. They stock various low- and no-alcohol drink options, in addition to wines, beers, and spirits. The kitchen shuts at 8 pm, so get there early enough. There are three EV chargers on site, but they were out of order when we visited, so check before travelling.

Four of us ate in the dining room on Saturday. We all enjoyed our food and though the service was a little slow, it didn't bother us as we could see the pub was busy. I have a cashew nut allergy and the staff were proactive in flagging menu items that may have been risky when I ordered. It was the first place I've been where staff took that much care of an allergy so I was very impressed. The atmosphere was great and we didn't feel rushed. It was a good experience, I would eat here again and would recommend The Bell to friends.

My friend and I meet at the bell frequently, today it was not up.to it's usual standard!! I had to wait at least 10.to be seated at a table, we had booked but it was not checked. There was a definite shortage of staff, my friends beer arrived cloudy and had to be returned, 4 pulls before one fit to drink. The food arrived fish.gougons but no tartar sauce and no offer of vinegar. There has always been.a piece of lemon to.squeeze over the fish, not today. We had.desert and then.asked.for the bill. 10 minutes later I went searching for the bill which.then.arrived about 5.minutes later. So disappointed in the food here today. We were told there are new chefs but that’s no excuse. Our pate starter (£7.50) came with 2 small triangles of toast. So we asked for some extra , which we were charge £1.79 for, u wouldn’t ever expect to pay nearly £10 for pate at a marstons pub. When the chicken skewer main arrived ( Iv had this here many times and always lovely ) There was 3 teeny tiny pieces of chicken , 3 burnt hard bits of chorizo and loads of peppers and onion ( which were all burnt ) I did question the size and amount of chicken before I ate it and was told that it was correct. But in the past the skewer has looked worth the money at £17. This main was taken off our bill. The other main was mixed grill. We mistook the rump steak for a burnt sausage, the lamp chop was the size of the tomato in the plate , and the peppercorn sauce tasted like salt. So so disappointing, we have used the bell at tong for 15 years plus and this is by far the worst meal we have ever had. Then not only were we annoyed about our food but when we were waiting for someone to take our payment , we over heard a very angry customer talk to two members of staff, seems as though he had been going there for many years too and he wasnt happy. The pub wasn’t even that busy as it normally was. When no one came to take our bill payment we went to pay at the bar , where there was no staff to be seen so I had to ask one of the waitresses whilst she was seating another customer as we had waited ages and just wanted to go. Th Bell at Tong has always been a regular place for me and my son to eat but unfortunately we won’t be returning. Such a shame.

The food tastes good, but they had no chicken or fish left, or a number of other dishes, so choices were very limited and they had to keep retaking our order as more dishes ran out. Sadly a very very poor experience at the Bell Inn.

Visited here yesterday and not for the first time (been quite a few times in the past) as soon as we walked in a young male staff member turned around abruptly and said we can’t stay. Looked around every table was empty so asked for an explanation, he just said we busy and not taking walk ins. Then another member of staff who was nicer with her communication said sorry we not taking in walk ins and I said but the booking system online is allowing me to book? She said yes you can book but no walks in (made absolutely no sense as I am here in person you won’t seat me but I can book online to be seated in the next 5 minutes?? Then the manager comes over and says no to even booking online, well that’s misleading to customers. Why not take down the booking system or say you’re full. To go on to say how her staff are over run by hours and the chefs can’t keep up with the food orders. Without being disrespectful this is their job, if they really can’t keep up like stated take down booking system as so misleading. All whilst I have a 10 month old in the push chair and 3 other children who are hungry by now. But if I had not said anything and just booked outside before going in they would have seated us. The way the manager spoke to us in front of the people queuing I have never felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable (as I do suffer with anxiety) such a shame as have had lovely staff in the past but over the last few months it’s just going down hill will never be returning again!!

We went there today for lunch just the two of us , first time the wife had been able to walk for a while so we gave it a try …. Before I get to the negative bits I have to say the food tasted good and looked good too , it’s a nice looking place with plenty of room …. To be fair I expected it to be busier at 2 on a Sunday ? Anyway , before we ordered I asked the young waitress if I could ‘swap’ the Cheese , Leek & potato pie for the vegetarian tart as I don’t like cranberries ….. she said she’d ask. Now then, bear in mind that the whole swap would just involve taking the tart off a plate and replacing it with the pie so I was really optimistic. Anyway she came back and said “ The only way we can do that is if you pay for both “ so I just clarified that she was asking me to pay for BOTH meals at a price of £31:00 !! She said “yes that’s right £31:00 “ 😵💫…….so I checked again with the lady who booked us in earlier and she agreed that I would have to pay for BOTH meals to enable them just to swap a pie for a tart !! You can see from the photo that they could have fitted both on a the same plate. Anyway it all went downhill from there , no horseradish sauce with the wife’s beef , a teaspoon of red cabbage , a teaspoon of clotted cream , the mixed berry compote was actually cherry compote, no one came to see if our food was ok , no hand towels or hand dryer in the loo , the people on the next table were told they would have to pay extra for a small jug of gravy as it was “ special Sunday gravy “ 🤣 When I left I did tell them what I thought , none of it was personal but the pricing strategy probably explains why there were so many empty tables ? The lady on the till knocked £18 off my bill and apologised but to be honest , we won’t be going there again …… it’s not local and situations like this help you choose where or where not to go ….. I have to say again that everything tasted good and looked good but what a shame.

Reasonable pub grub that occaisonally suffers from bad service and jobs worth management. We have eaten here a number of times - in general its fine. On our last visit we tried to swap out the potato style (with skins on) on to a different type (no skins on, mash was asked for) and were told that this was impossible........... Obviously, it is likely we wont be going back for an evening meal. Just made the group think they are just re-heating pre-packed meals, thats why they were not willing to do such a simple swap.

What a little gem of a place! I had heard about 'The Bell at Tong' for years but never been. We booked online with ease. When we arrived, there was plenty of room to park outside the pub. We were seated quickly in a lovely conservatory. The decor was fitting to the old building, tastefully done. Our drinks order was taken promptly whilst we looked at the menu. I had a NZ Sauvignon Blanc and my partner had a pint or Orchard Thieves Cider. We chose our food. I ordered the pate, brioche and onion relish which came out really nicely presented and tasted very good but not enough brioche, just two tiny slices, so I had to steal bread from my partner's tomato soup which he said was excellent. For my main, I had the buttermilk chicken burger with hot honey, coleslaw and chunky chips. Could not taste the hot honey but the burger was not too bad, maybe a tad overdone in the fryer. I would serve the hot honey in a little bowl or jug. Chips were crunchy on the outside and soft inside, yum! My partner had the signature burger which he said was really good. Great service, very attentive but not overly so. We got 20% off with my Blue Light Card. We will definitely be back. Definitely recommend a visit.

Quiet Wednesday afternoon, ordered a 2 course lunch meal and one meal from the main menu Both disappointed Portion size for 2 course lunch, disappointing Requested a change from mash to chips on main menu, food arrived with mash, advised server, took meal away and returned with chips Sadly the veg on the main meal was over cooked and cold, the plate was warmer than the veg! Honey glazed carrots had no honey glaze When the server cleared plates advised her of the issues - she didn’t seem too surprised Didn’t have to pay for the main meal, only the 2 course lunch. The decor is lovely and relaxed and the food is tasty with plenty of options for everyone. We enjoy coming here as a family or a couple to relax and enjoy good food. Many thanks to all the staff for their hard work in making this a lovely local pub to visit
