We found this pub by chance whilst visiting family members who are new to the area. We loved everything about it. The proprietors are friendly, service is excellent and the food is not only delicious but very competitively priced. We are real ale drinkers, and all agreed that the various beers and cider available were superb. We will definitely be back.

Having last visited way back in 1984, I was very much looking forward to visiting this hostelry, which is thankfully still brewing its own highly-regarded beer. Three generations of 'lads' arrived for a spot of lunch, and were cheerfully greeted by the hosts, who seated us in the well appointed and comfortable dining room. We then proceeded to enjoy what can only be described as a first-class and very tasty lunch, the highlights of which included the home-made scotch egg starters, the pan fried Haddock special, the house selected sausages & mash and the chicken burger, which my nephew described as the best he had ever tasted! (Apparently, he is a chicken burger aficionado!) The table and bar service was very friendly, professional and attentive. We could not fault our dining experience and would definitely recommend the Beer Engine to any prospective customers. Equally impressive was the home brewed beer - all the different ones we tried were served at the perfect temperature, and looked/tasted in perfect condition. It is refreshing to see a brewery not succumbing to the temptations of 'Craft Brewing Mania', where all creations are overpowered by outlandish, exotic ingredients and twangy flavours! Come to the Beer Engine to taste the delights of pure and simple, superbly made 'beer' tasting beer! Hopefully it will not be as long before we make our next visit - already looking forward to it...

Absolutely stunning lunch with outstanding service throughout from Finn. He was informative, witty and professional. I have to stress the quality of the food in this establishment was excellent. All cooked very, very well indeed. A fabulous, comprehensive menu of starters, mains and desserts (all well priced). If you are a real ale drinker you will be in your element. This is a genuine pub with fantastic memorabilia adorning the walls, a brilliant well stocked bar and lovely open fire. Plenty of parking.

We stopped off for a drink as this looked like a great little pub from reviews. The staff immediately asked if we were local, when we said no, they were immediately unfriendly and unwelcoming to the point where we left early rather upset by the whole experience. The beer itself was very nice and they have a good room downstairs which was full, but it was small things like the staff immediately disengaging in conversation, and asking us to remove our dog even though there were multiple other dogs and children running around and making much more noise (to clarify one of our dogs was squeaking a bit as there was a family next to us with a spaniel who was clearly in heat, bouncing off the walls and running around in circles). There seemed to be a lot of small things being said at the bar behind us with folk looking at us and chuckling, it was genuinely really not very nice at all. Considering we went in with the intention of buying a few rounds and some beer/merchandise to take home, we hardly stayed for one. Such as shame as this could have been a great pub.

The most shocking treatment I ever witnessed and had. Arrived to this place earlier, so we could commemorate two of the members of our group's birthday by waiting by the bar drinking alcohol. But as soon as staff saw my disabled friend they were not happy. It was so obvious. They said she should sit by a high stool by the bar, but she barely can walk, so we asked them to take a stool away and put a chair instead. A man that looked like the boss of the place just replied: 'We don't want her to obstruct passage!' Which was shocking, they left her there holding to me standing up whilst the bar staff kept asking if we want to drink. We took a chair ourselves and sat my friend with no obstruction at all to their path. By this time the man said he found a table earlier, so we couldn't start to drink, decided to give up alcohol and commemorate later somewhere else. I wish I could leave, being from a country where people would straight away accommodate an elderly and disabled person and make them as comfortable as possible. We didn't leave because it's hard for her to walk and I didn't want to make her walk back. My friend that book the place said she had a good vegan meal there once and we felt we would give a chance anyways. Once sited this man continued to be ruder and ruder, inpatient and aggressive in his body language. He was so rude to our friend when she asked questions about their vegan food, she asked about nut roast if it would be too dry without sauce, for which he replied no. Rolling his eyes to every questions. He put a vegan gravy meal together without gravy instead of telling us simply that would not be a good idea. ( his idea). Anyways, we ordered, thinking maybe the chef is good. First the starter, disgusting olives that he probably buys from the cheapest supermarket and called it "marinated olives'. I am not sure of his costumers are used to poor quality but I have never had poor quality like this in nice pubs in Exeter. It was shocking. Then he brought our plates of dried "roast", with nothing on, not even olive oil on the veggies, nothing, seemed like he had a kick of serving us ( vegans) that food. He offered apple and cranberry sauce and my friend said: yes please, can I have both? He brought only one cranberry and threw on the table. My other friend scampi plate ( the non vegan one) looked like a frozen food you get from Lidl. I decided to observe the other tables, the food were the same, all poor quality from frozen. People drink alcohol and eat. I find the British have no courage to complain or they keep going back because they have no clue about food and good food or they are embarrassed to complain. So this kind of pub can exploit their customers with the fake propaganda. Anyways we decided to be like the British, to let it go then desert came, I couldn't stop laughing because it was a joke. My elderly friend even called it 'miserable desert'. Very poor effort. We decided to let it go, and have fun as it was two our members birthday and we will soon go somewhere to commemorate with drinks. Time to pay, my friend only comment that she didn't find the price fair for such a bland meal 17 pounds for what is in the picture: frozen veggies, nut roast and frozen chips with nothing on it. The owner/ boss/ whatever that rude man was, went crazy. He was a huge build man, looking squaring in the eyes of the two of the ladies ( he wouldn't dare to do it to a man, the coward). He told us we should have told him we are brining a disabled person before hand. ( I knew by their faces and behaviours that he was discriminating my friend from the beginning). Told our friend that we arrived earlier ( yes we did, to sit by the bar and drink) but he didn't made it possible. Anyways, he went on to threaten my friend, a small thin lady, telling her he knows her family. Exactly, like a gangster. We felt sorry for the staff that were nice and have to work under this man. The young boy was lovely, please go work somewhere else and I really hope this horrible man is not your father.

Hands down worst experience I have ever had eating out, and I have travelled the world and eaten from street stalls to top-class world-famous restaurants. I took my elderly friend out for dinner, who is visibly disabled. The owner discriminated against her immediately. I think she made the staff and customers uncomfortable. We arrived early for pre-dinner drinks but there was nowhere to sit. We asked for a chair for my 82-year-old friend and the manager said no as she would be in the way of other customers. He left her and us standing for a good ten minutes. I wanted to leave immediately but it was such an effort for my friend to get in and out of the car and to walk that I didn't want to stress her out. We were given a table but we were met with impatience and indignation from the start which continued the entire evening. The impatience of the manager serving us couldn't be more obvious. He was literally rolling his eyes at us. We asked about the vegan options and it only got worse. He angrily informed us that there was only one vegan option but that he could throw together a plate for us and that is literally what he did, threw it together. There was zero effort and we were made to feel that we were nothing but an imposition and we felt very unwelcome. The food was bland and tasteless and there was no effort to make it palatable and he ignored our request for some gravy or at least some sauces. To be honest, all of the food that was being served to the other guests looked like it came from a greasy spoon. My elderly friend ordered scampi and it looked like a kid's meal from a supermarket cafe - frozen scampi balls, frozen chips and frozen peas. We then made the mistake of ordering a chocolate brownie which was not a brownie. It looked like they scraped the sauce off the top of a cake. You needed a spoon to eat it and not a fork. It was horrible and we felt sick after. Then came the fun bit. He charged us £17 for our vegan meal which consisted of a bland and greasy spoon of potato, a slice of nut roast that tasted and felt like cardboard and some plain green beans and frozen peas. I had the audacity to express my disappointment and the manager went ballistic. He told us that we were out of order coming to the pub before our booking slot. Imagine coming to a pub to have a drink before dinner...how outrageous, then he told us we shouldn't have come with a disabled person without telling them in advance. Ahh, there you have it, my disabled friend lowering the tone. He became very unstable and unbalanced when we objected to the poor value for money and he began screaming at me and my friend in front of the entire restaurant. He told us that we didn't have to pay anything. Normally I would not accept a free meal but in this situation, I did, as he was so out of order to us and the food was so bad and the price was so high that I found it more than justifiable that we shouldn't pay. He then went on to threaten my friend. A fully grown man was threatening my other friend who is in her sixties and very petite. I couldn't believe my ears and eyes. He told me that I was banned which is irrelevant, I wouldn't step back in that place if you paid me. I can honestly say I have never been treated so badly. We really did try to swallow the bad attitude and the clear distaste he had for women who are vegan and for elderly disabled women, and we even shut up when the food was a disgrace. We only commented on the price at the end (as he didn't inform us of the price beforehand) and then the guy had a breakdown. He really should get some therapy and go on a course to teach him about good customer service and relations. However, I am not sure it would help at all, this guy had 'misogynistic ' permeating through him like a stick of rock has the word Blackpool running through it. I am genuinely in shock, and deeply saddened at the discrimination my older friends faced. If you are vegan or disabled please save yourself the humiliation and indignity of eating here.

Outstandingly good and great value for the quality. I hadn’t visited since 1985. The beer is still excellent. The decor is lovely, modern but in a classic and fitting way. We didn’t eat outside but kept our booked table indoors. Bar staff were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the beers - always a relief. All front of house were a delight and clearly enjoy working there. Table service was prompt on the provision of a menu and then the taking of an order. We shared to start a grilled cheesy topped focaccia - light and crumpety and moreish. Then pan fried hake on a white wine sauce with a pea and dill potato cake and greens as well as a chicken fillet burger with crispy bacon, garlic mayo, rosti, chips and a decent salad. Both nicely presented and cheap okd perfectly. We booked and had explained that we had an hour and twenty minutes between trains. The request stop is eight minutes from Exeter St. David’s railway station. Not all Barnstaple services stop here so check the D2 timetable from GWR! Have a night out in the country at a proper pub - you won’t regret it!

We were pleased to find a table in an extensive well covered open area at the rear of the pub away from the road. There were interesting starters and main courses including vegan options; our starters were hummus and flatbread, and mini duck spring rolls, followed by red lentil and chickpea curry, and asparagus stuffed chicken breast with herby diced potatoes. The meal was concluded with vegan brownie and vanilla ice cream, and ginger and treacle tart with clotted cream. Service was prompt, friendly and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed the last evening of our holiday in Devon.

This was our first visit. We’d booked a table the day before and had a seat in the bar area so we could bring our dog. The range and quality of the beer brewed on the premises was outstanding. We shared Olives and Humus as an appetiser - the Olives were sweetly marinaded and the Humus garlicky and smooth. Our main meals were Fish of the Day (Halibut) with an Olive Oil Potato Cake and a Mushroom, Spinach and Feta Wellington with Sweet Potato Chips. Both were served with a delicious melange of green vegetables. Portions were generous and everything was cooked on point! We finished with coffee. There’s a great ambience about this place. We met Bertie the Wire Haired Dachshund. Service was excellent and staff friendly and helpful.

I love this place. It's perfect for meeting friends at any time of year, in the summer you can take advantage of the beer garden and in the winter the fire is lit! Well worth a stop off for a pint or food too, you won't be disappointed.

Can’t really complain about anything as there is nothing wrong with the roasts served here (and good gluten free options available too!) but can’t help thinking they’re a bit ‘school dinner’ style. Huge portions, slightly over cooked meat, thick gloopy gravy, kind of anaemic potatoes, cheap vegetables like peas and carrots rather than any dark greens or any interesting veg like roasted beetroot etc. Would come back if we were starving hungry but wouldn’t come back for a ‘quality’ roast.

Back with my brother for a few days. On last visit he failed his only task - book the Beer Engine. This time he got it right. We came previous evening for a swift pint and the place was heaving. A tad quieter when we came next day for dinner. We were seated quickly with our pints of Rail and Piston ale. For starters brother had Whitebait I went for my favourite Duck pate. Both were substantial portions. For mains I had the Lamb shank, brother had the Pork Belly. Very tasty mains leaving us too stuffed for puddings. Very good table service also. Will be back

Staff were really friendly, food was tasty. I had a vegetarian meal which was full of flavour. My partner had F+C which he said was lovely as well. Would definitely go back if in the area again.

Have just had Sunday lunch with the family, and had to write a review. What a cracking Sunday lunch we all had. Couldn't fault a thing and you certainly get your money's worth. It all comes out nice and hot and plentiful, nice and clean tables. Also everyone of the staff deserve a mention as all of them were so cheerful and you were certainly made to feel welcome from the start. Will most certainly be returning in the near future. Great food, great service, great staff. Please don't change in what you are doing.

Absolutely outstanding pub from the moment we walked in. The food is excellent, we had roast pork and it was perfectly cooked with all the trimmings and the roast potatoes are something else. I don’t normally like roast potatoes but I don’t know what they did to cook them but they were delicious I couldn’t stop eating them! The desserts are lush. The beer is fantastic but what makes this an outstanding pub....the staff. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming and so knowledgeable about the beer they were serving. We will definitely be returning and will be recommending this place to everyone

Could not recommend this place enough. The service from the waiter/barman was faultless. The food was enormous and delightful. On a busy Sunday afternoon we had no problem finding a table and the food arrived in perfect timing hot and delicious. Cannot praise the service enough, felt like a regular walking in. I would advise to ignore negative reviews as I cannot find a single thing to complain about.

Passing through nearby, found this on google, otherwise wouldn’t have found it. They seemed surprised we hadn’t booked a table, which we thought was unnecessary on a rainy Tuesday night at 6pm. Oh no it wasn’t!! By 7, the place was heaving and all tables were fully booked. Food was amazing, especially for a pub that looked like it did from the outside. Good service, reasonable prices, and it’s own brewery! Can’t recommend highly enough!

So we have been meaning to go to this locally famous pub for years and we finally made it. OH MY DAYS I wish we had not bothered! Food was mediocre at best (however if you are unfortunate enough to go you need to try the scotch egg it was the absolute highlight of the visit), overall it was very expensive especially the gin. 21 gins on sale and they can’t even be bothered to have nice gin glasses and at £4.75 per single this is the bare minimum I would expect. If you want to be treated like you are a bit of an inconvenience and feel like you are on a production line where they want you off the table as soon as possible then this is the place for you. If you want a nice family relaxing meal where you feel valued and not rushed then this is NOT the place for you as it wasn’t for us. We will not be going back..... Very disappointed in the whole visit.

We came here for Sunday roast with family. The food was fantastic and portions large. They offer a smaller portion option which I’m glad I chose as I can’t eat a lot of meat! We couldn’t fault the service and food. We will be returning!

To celebrate a 50th birthday we visited The Beer Engine for a lunchtime Sunday roast. I am glad we didn't have a starter as the portion of roast was LARGE. The chicken was tender and full of flavour. Good selection of vegetables, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, and stuffing. A jug of extra gravy. Fast and efficient service, friendly and helpful staff. All three of us had to have a doggy bag!

Four of us ate an early evening meal at this lovely gastropub. Three of the meals were really good (including a small size fish and chips for someone with a tiny appetite to match). The fourth meal was unusual - sticky glazed pork with a massive salad and potato salad. It was too much for one person to eat so was packaged up to take home. The prices are good and the food is too, although the pork dish was unusual!

We returned here with friends and the food and service were just as good. I had the fish of the day and they were quite happy to change the potatoes on the menu for something different at no extra charge. The staff are lovely and make the whole experience a pleasure. The food is the best I have had since our last visit, I especially love the saffron leeks, and we have more visits planned. To top it off the morris dancers made a perfect evening even more special.

Friendly pub, lovely food, it's a large meal so perfect if you have a big appetite. A real village pub, close to a railway station. It also has it's own little brewery. In the winter a huge log fire gives the bar a warm atmosphere.

This is a real gem in Dorchester. We love the coffee best in the area. The food is always excellent. The staff are very good always very helpful and service with a smile. Lovely place to meet up with friends and enjoy the lovely open space. Not sure why they were closed today Friday 5th August, but did hear that it might be closed for a while due to on going dispute. Be a real shame if it does close as it was a good find with excellent coffee.

Sunday roast wasn't great unfortunately. The beef was exceptionally chewy and when mentioned to the waiter the reply was something along the lines of "yes we know". Also the veg consisted of swede, carrot and cabbage which was quite uninspiring. Would expect more for £18.

We came here after a long Autumn walk with our dog, it was so lovely and warm next to the log fire and we had one of the best Sunday roasts we've ever had. It's not just an average pub roast, everything on the plate was incredible!
