The Bedford in Wandsworth

I recently celebrated my graduation party here, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish! The food was outstanding - we had various starters and pork belly roast as our main course. The head chef went above and beyond to accommodate my specific requests; the food was bursting with flavour and beautifully presented. The service was friendly and attentive, making my celebration feel truly special. I highly recommend this place for any event!

A decent pub in a great location, but it needs to work out if it’s a pub or a club. The music on a Saturday evening (we were from 6pm-8pm) was too loud. My friends and I were sat around a table and literally shouting at each other just to have a conversation. We’re not adverse to clubbing, but if go to a pub you want to be able to chat to friends and socialise without feeling assaulted by the noise. This wasn’t late into the evening and there really was no valid reason to have such a deafening volume. I understand that the venue opens up later in the evening to become a club. Fab. Then why do they feel the need to have the volume jacked up to max all evening. We noted they serve food until 10pm but I can’t think of anything worse than having a meal here.

Big space, bang average pub (which it never used to be), not too friendly staff, but far too happy to take your money and tell you to bugger off when they want to go home...

I came here for a podcast festival, decent selection of beers and pub grub. Big bar area downstairs and you can drink outside on the street in the afternoon sun. There's a big quite posh performance room downstairs and some other room upstairs.

A great venue for a comedy gig.

Have been coming to the Bedford weekly as it’s our local and never had an issue. A couple of weeks ago we came here for food (group of 3) and all ended up with symptoms that can only be described as food poisoning. We didn’t want to leave a bad review so we emailed the pub privately and never really heard back. This type of situation can’t be taken lightly if you’re making people unwell with your food. I’m sorry to say none of us will be returning until there’s further resolution on that matter. It’s a shame since we used to come here regularly but the negligence really put us off.

Visited today for CheapShow show, quite a big and spacious place, clean, toilets in good shape and tidy. They didn't have Guinness Zero but there was Lucky Saint from tap, so not bad. Seems you can get usual selection of drinks, nothing crazy if you are into craft. Haven't checked food but menu looks promising. Stage room for events is very cool, doesn't get hot even with full house, they have bar inside as well but it wasn't open for some reason. Overall it's really nice place, good service, charging almost 6 quid for pint of non-alcoholic drink seems like a crime to me but everyone does it now so what the hell do I know. Super close to station so can travel to Central easily.

I didn't stay, so I can't comment on the rooms. We went for Sunday lunch and the Drag Show. The beef was really good, lovely and pink, very tender. Nice selection of vegetables. Slight grumble the amount of beef for £19.00 was a bit small. Pork was far more generous. Staff brought the food to the table in the caberet room. Overall a good fun afternoon ☺️

Amendment: A great venue, went there on a Saturday night. Lovely all round, it was full with good vibes, happy to return and bring family as well.

I visited today and was blown away by the interior design. The decor is to die for. Such a unique blend of old and new, traditional and eccentric. The team is incredibly helpful and friendly. I didn't eat but I did see a massive selection of drinks. They have beautiful function rooms and my overall experience was amazing. I will be returning, definitely! ----- I have returned and have a beautiful room/suite. I'm absolutely blown away by the decor and facilities in the room. This is such a beautiful space decadently decorated luxurious and it gives a real feeling of opulence.

Such a lovely hotel. Very quirky and welcoming! Staff were on point throughout. The room was soo comfortable and had everything you need. We wasn't aware of the nightclub downstairs but honestly the minute you go upstairs you can't hear a thing! Ideal location just a minute from the tube station. One of the best hotels we have stayed in!!

Room was clean, comfortable, and super quaint. Probably one of the most unique stays that I’ve had. So much character. Hotel staff were hospitable and helpful. The cocktails were well balanced and carefully crafted. The food was hot and very nice. When the wrong item was brought staff corrected the issue and offered compensation. Short walk to the tube and No complaints. We enjoyed our stay! Would stay again.

Brilliant pub, lovely service and fair prices. As part of the LGBT community, I’m very grateful to them for providing such a great safe space for us.

The doorman is on a power trip. Didnt let me in because ‘he didnt recognise me’. Didnt know you needed to be known by the predatorial bouncers to be able to have a beer at the local. To make it worse i already paid for a beer went for a smoke and then was refused entry. The bigger one that wears a beany is the one in question.

Went for a meal last night,ordered fish & chips it was really good. The meal was nice and hot, the fish was the best I have eaten for a long time and the chips were big and crispsy-just like my mum used to cook. It was served with mushy peas and tartar sauce, lovely. The waitress was a very pleasant young lady, would definately recommend and for anyone who does not live locally it is very close to Balham station.

Good location, nice place for people to rent a room for a birthday party etc. Nice music and it’s nice and cosy, I’ve only been there for a party twice but it was nice. 3.5 star - average

Not sure what sure what star to give here but the reason i am giving this review because I don't understand why bar staff cant make a simple cocktail such as a black Russian which I wanted but I get a reply from staff saying its not our policy and I get gaslighting into buying their own selected cocktail menu. So my complaint is why do have all the spirits off all kinds that you cant make a simple easy cocktail at a fixed price? This is why I hate going out at london bars because these gaslighting policy's make ordering a drink into rocket science.....this is not what customer service is all about.

Worth every penny! Boronia suggested this place to me a month ago and I have finally managed to come and visit. I came with a friend and boy oh boy, the roast was excellent!!! This could probably be the best roast in London. Great venue, lovely atmosphere and lovely service. Shout out to Lucy who looked after us, she was attentive and very helpful. Big thank you to Boronia for the recommendation. We will definitely be back on a weekday and enjoy the live music! Thank you for a great time x

Came in on a Saturday evening (17:30), says it shows sports but has two small screens in awkward spots and has no sound, opting for loud music instead. Ladies loos have toilet seats that are so wonky you're sitting on the porcelain. You can't be a sports pub, venue and restaurant all at once

Lovely cozy vibes, good music and good beer

My partner and I were at the hotel last week and the truth is that our stay was perfect. A very cozy place and even if the pub is open at night, you couldn't hear anything, so 10/10.

Terrible service. We were told there was no roast beef only to watch customers who were seated later be brought beef. When challenged the service staff explained that as our order had already gone through they couldn’t change it once the beef became available. The experience was made worse when my own dinner arrived after everyone else had finished as the first lot of salmon was off and a whole new meal had to be prepared.

I was lost and asked the gentlement at the bar if he could help me as my phone had died and he kindly looked up the address on his phone and helped me find the place I was meant to go. Im really grateful as I didnt have any form of contacting anyone I knew. Thank you Gary

We went here with a group of 6 of us and we watched the stand up show, it was well worth the 10 pounds to watch and its a nice little bar with a great atmosphere, plenty of room to move about and a outdoor/kinda sheltered smoking area, would recommend, not sure on food tho

Popped in for a quick lunch here today, the young Scottish chap behind the bar was excellent, good quick service and a smile and a laugh. Had the burger and a beer. The burger was good, the chips were delicious like triple cooked chips. Not to badly priced and superb service.

Lovely spot for a lager or an ale should you wish. Garden exists, both on road and behind the pub, a nice touch. Grubby floors, need cleaning. Black haired man behind bar had aura, he handled two young champagne socialists from North London supremely well. Little curly haired nerd sat outside was killing the vibe though. He was reciting slam poetry and hugging his gay friend with a fringe.

Unbelievable rude bar service. Thursday 15th August 9pm, utterly rude barman with dark slick backed hair just finished serving another customer, looked at me like I was an idiot, gestured his finger at me and asked ‘yes?’ like I was completely inconveniencing him. Friends had a similar separate experience which frankly ruined my opinion of the pub.

This hotel is in a good location. It has a very good bar area and has outside seating. At present they have a half pice menu from Monday to Wednesday and the food is good. The staff were all friendly and helpful. However, the 2 rooms we stayed in (7 and14) were cramped. You had to climb over the bed to get in the far side and you had to do the same to operate the blind. The lift only operates during pub opening times and doesn’t go to the top floor so you have to carry your bags to the top level. We were informed that all “double” rooms were configured the same way so you had to climb over the 3/4 size bed to get in the far side. We were given a bottle of wine to compensate us for the inconvenience but this didn’t really help! This is a music venue so be prepared for noise from down below and the trains that run nearby, I suppose the earplugs provided do help somewhat.

We stayed at the Bedford Balham for 7 days. The hotel is very well located, close to a metro station (Northern Line), with access to central London in 15 minutes. There are supermarkets nearby and very good restaurants (Pizzeria and Indian room Balham). The room is spacious with very comfortable bedding. The bed is made every day, the room is cleaned and products (tea/coffee) are provided daily. We ate once at the hotel and the meal was very good. The only negative points in my opinion are that the hotel does not offer breakfast and the noise which can be disturbing for some sensitive people even if it was not for me.

A Balham institution that I only visited recently for the first time. Spacious interior and tables outside.

We have been to the Bedford several times. Tonight’s experience was different. The food was good and our Irish server was great. When we went to pay we asked if we can split the bill and they said that’s fine. This process then took around 20-30 minutes as she calculated on her iPhone while asking us each our items were( we didn’t know this without looking at a menu) after a lot of confusion and nearly double charging some of us we finally got it sorted and left. We were crossing the road and then was approached by the waiter saying we didn’t pay the service charge after we all though the bill was sorted. We asked this to be removed but didn’t realise this needed to be done as soon as you arrived. We ended up having to pay the service charge and were very disappointed customers. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.

Food was awesome! But that’s about where it finished… We wanted to split the bill which they said was fine. But what then followed was the waitress using her iPhone calculator and asking us to read how much each item was off the menu. Took about 20 minutes for us to pay. After we finally walked out we were chased down the road by the waitress asking that we pay the service charge. When we had asked for it to be removed. She said we needed to talk to the manager if we didn’t want to pay it. We walked back into the restaurant to explain that we wanted it removed but to no avail - we had to pay. Ironic because the service was horrible! If you do not want to pay the service charge here make sure you state so before you order the food! Apparently that was why we had to pay it at the end.

Attended The Bedford a few times to meet friends. Really cool place, we had the upstairs room for a group get together and screening. I love the uniqueness of this venue and the history. Staff seem really friendly and offer good service.

Place to unwind and mert friends. It also has rooms for parties.

Stopped in for a midweek lunchtime snack and a drink with my wife. Nice friendly pub, good food and pleasant atmosphere. I highly recommend.

I went to The Bedford for a meeting and was warmly welcomed by the staff and shown where to go for that meeting. The pizza and salad were fabulous!

Went to see live bands last night and it was a brilliant evening. A BIG shout out to GARY who was incredibly helpful and made our evening. Pizza, rosemary fries, sweet potato fries, fish and chips were absolutely amazing. Some Pizza restaurants do not do pizza this good!

Really nice place, great staff. Good quality dishes (scotch eggs and schnitzel) and even better on Tuesday lunchtimes as they have a special discount offer. Overall a really nice lunch.

Great venue, great location, good choice of drinks & lots of entertainment options throughout the week. An icon of a public house. A brilliant local venue at the heart of the community. Close to the tube / train & the food is not bad either since the refurbishment 5/ 6 years ago (but get a deal when you can to make it even better value for money). The poor score is sadly because of the shocking ‘customer service’ that you might have seen in other reviews. Staff don’t want to seem to take your order at the bar & then have an attitude if you have any query or question. They seem as if they are doing you a favour throughout this poor experience. Today I highlighted an experience that my family had (told 4 times in 10 mins that we had to vacate the table in 15 mins despite only just arriving and being clear that we would leave in good time). The feedback was met with an argument & confrontational behaviour in front of my family. Apparently, it was our problem! Feedback to the three cheers owners…. Great venues BUT train & retrain your staff PLEASE. This a common theme that your inadequate managers have not addressed over several years now. Sort this out & the venue is genuinely brilliant.

Having lived in Balham all my life and thought this was my local it doesn’t feel like it anymore. SHOCKING I am also shocked at what happened this afternoon, RUDE STAFF IS BEYOND A JOKE!! Sort it out @thebedfordbalham!

We really had the most wonderful wedding at The Bedford. We decided to have our ceremony at Wandsworth Town Hall and then we arrived at 4pm for welcome drinks in the cocktail bar which is such a lovely setting. We then moved onto a 110 person sit down meal in the Ballroom and the food was great. The Ballroom then turned into the dance floor where we partied until 2am! The venue was just perfect for what we wanted, it was spacious enough to accommodate all of our guests and we were able to have the wedding we wanted for a very reasonable price. It truly felt like the perfect chic London wedding. All our guests commented on how much they loved the venue and it really felt like it represented me and my husband. We also reserved all the hotel rooms which made it super convenient. Ann was so helpful the whole way through the process and worked so hard the night of the wedding to ensure it all ran so smoothly. I would highly recommend the venue for anyone looking for a laid back, but intimate London wedding venue where you can party until the early hours of the morning! I've got one less Problem now I've found the Bedford. God is a Woman in Nora: she left me with No Tears Left to Cry after The Way she served us. The pub gives me the chance to Break Free from the mediocrity; to the other Balham lot, thank u next. X

Old style traditional pub with plenty of character. Attended.for a wedding and stayed over. Rooms are very good and very big for London, especially the bathrooms. All refurbished well with lift to first and second floors. Surprisingly larger areas for functions. Service was great 👍 and food was substantial.

I love the Bedford because it's quirky and fun and the food is great and the music is wonderful.

This is the best boutique hotel I have stayed in. Love the room and the dekor. The service was top. Love that the room had a bathtub. Didn't hear a sound from the pub or the traffic

Best emerging talent live venue in London

Beautiful period pub. Nice people work to keep it really clean and well run. Good warm caring atmosphere I went to dance. Very old well worn but superb dance floor upstairs... with another bar. It's a gorgeous place with an awful lot going for it. IF the staff cleanliness atmosphere and care out into entertainment scheduled is anything to go by and it usually is .. The Bedford food is likely to live up to expectations They work and play hard at The Bedford and it's worth going out if your way to get there.... I found absolutely nothing to dislike and I used to work in events and I do look at the details. It's lively it has both heart and soul... if your in the area yes drop by.... Spending: just drinks proves normal.

Great place to enjoy high quality pub food classics and head off to the concert area where some local singers/band perform live for free (from Mondays to Thursdays).

Great old style hotel, very comfy beds and lovely quality bedding, showers are great, if your looking for a lively place to stay on a weekend then this is the perfect place, Sundays lovely and quiet to relax and I'm sure week days be the same. The food looks lovely and the pizzas were really nice, there is plenty of cafe coffee shops in Balham and Milk coffee shop sell gorgeous cakes and pastries, also plenty of little restaurants dotted about, one thing to bare in mind is that no where seems to be open for food after 11pm except McDonald's, there is a Sainsbury's and aldi close by and Balham tube station is only a 5 minute walk. All in all a very enjoyable stay and would stay again 😊

Fun spot. Went for a friend’s birthday and the DJ was playing great throwback tunes from early 2000s to present. Drinks turnaround at the bar was fast too.

Love the food here. Been a few times for dinner. Beautiful dinning room with sleek retro feel. Mum had beef pie other night and didn't stop raving about it! Portions are great, I always miss out on dessert 😂

Visit for the comedy night with group of friends. Venue for the show is at the back and quite cost but not cramped. Some of our friends had food prior and said it was very good. The show was excellent with west end quality comedians. After the show the room becomes a dance floor. Overall a really great night , the only downside is the main pub / bar area which gets quite crowded and loud but this is to be expected given it was a Saturday night.

Wonderful pub, great food, friendly staff and an inspiring and warm host

As locals, we eat regularly at the Bedford and always enjoy the friendly atmosphere. The recent menu change is a winner and the food is delicious - especially the sirloin steak. However, we always find the servers are slow to provide the bill and even longer to take payment. We often wait 30-45 mins after finishing eating. Without this, our experience would be top notch.

Really good pub, it does it all! Decent food, great night out. I’ve never had a bad vibe there - comparatively priced for the area.

I held my 40th bday at The Bedford and everything was absolutely amazing. The food was delicious and our bartender Jimmy was just incredible. Thank you for the wonderful night.

A great local pub. They have a really good atmosphere and put on some excellent events. The service can be a bit slow at times but it is at least always friendly.

The hotel rooms are really cute and pretty but our bathroom was not properly cleaned upon our arrival. The toilet was not cleaned and a towel from the prior guest was still hanging on the bathroom door. Other than that the staff was friendly and the comedy show was 10/10. Keep in mind this is a bar with late opening times so if thats not your thing you might wanna stay somewhere else.

Really enjoyed the Bedford, felt a trendy modern pub with great food and service! Wednesday nights have a 2 Steaks + Wine for £40 which is great value and food! The wine was good too! The french toast panettone wasn't a great dessert, but we also had the creme brûlée which was great so great for that!

Terrible Christmas Dinner, will never go back. Don't waste your money. What was advertised/on the menu was not what we got! No vegetables roasted, boiled only. Cold food, my mum sent hers back and asked for it to be warmed. They came back 1 minute later with the same plate! Hard, cold Christmas pudding with squirty cream draped in cranberry sauce??? Awful!! So disappointing. Also no Christmas feel, table was chipped and we were squashed in like sardines. Won't go back for sure!

Leuk hotel voor de jongere generatie. Het is leuk gerenoveerd en de kamers zien er gezellig uit. Je slaapt in een soort bedstede en moet over elkaar heen als je er uit wil. Ook is het een grote uitgaansgelegenheid en gaat het tot laat in de nacht behoorlijk door, hetgeen in zo’n oud pand best gehorig is.

Food was way overpriced for what it was, went to see a comedy show there which was good.

The venue is nice. As in a typical English pub, you order at the counter. I had lamb, the meat was nicely cooked and tasted good. The giant tabuleh couscous on the side was neither tabuleh nor couscous and it was overcooked. The sweet potatoes chips were not good, not crispy. The sirloin was good. The place wasn't so busy and the waiters were nice but we had to ask for fork and knife that they forgot and salt and olive oil.

OK - cooked breakfast not fantastic - cold toast, warm bacon, raw tomato, tiny portion of baked beans.

An excellent night out in a lively neighbourhood pub with lots of choices for live entertainment and function rooms for your events.

Hotel zelf ligt op een goede locatie en heeft een gezellige sfeervolle pub eronder. Kamer zelf is ook leuk aangekleed. In de kamer zelf is nog wel wat onderhoud te doen, zit wat schimmel in de badkamer en het is wat verouderd. Op de website mag wel echt een notitie staan voor geluidsoverlast. Vrijdag en zaterdag was er een feest in de pub (zaterdag tot 2 uur) en dat hoorde je heel erg hard in de kamer, zelfs de ruiten bonste. Het is dat we echt moe waren en er doorheen sliepen maar het was net alsof de kamer naast je de geluidsinstallatie op vol vermogen had staan. De treinen die (elke 6 minuten voorbijkomen) zijn ook goed hoorbaar. Voor ons niet storend maar dat kan het wel zijn.
