Was in Edinburgh one Saturday morning, and I was in need of something eat, and looking to see what was near by, The Bearded Baker took my fancy. Nice little compact cafe, while a little bit out of the way for Edinburgh, if you happen to find yourself in the area it is very much well worth tracking down. Good selection of bagels with many fillings, and the cakes and doughnuts on display are as tempting as they come, so you will end up taking out a lot more than you expect. Ordered a Rubens Bagel to go with a coffee, and because they were so mouth watering on display, decided to treat myself with a custard and walnut doughnut that was as big as my clenched fist. Good prices and freshly prepared in no time. Most certainly my favorite brunch spot in Edinburgh now.

This is a terrific wee shop. We bought bagels, cakes and some of the olive focaccia today and I honestly don’t think you’d find any better anywhere else. It isn’t the cheapest but nothing is cheap these days. They’re making up the bagels fresh… I found the service really friendly, and it looked like there were plenty of other happy customers so fully deserves five stars

The decor reminds me of Melbourne Australia - it's gorgeous. The coffee is delicious - especially the decaf. Food is really good too. My only complaint is the staff are often miserable, rude and cold. There isn't a great warm or friendly atmosphere in there, it feels a bit cold and snobby and like the staff aren't happy working there. The tone certainly set by the staff. It is also a bit over-priced.

Me and my boyfriend visited Edinburgh over the weekend and managed to find this hidden gem of a bakery. They were only doing takeaway but it was so worth it. I had the avocado bagel and my boyfriend had the classic filled bagel. I don’t usually enjoy smoked salmon but my god I will be dreaming about both of these bagels. Not everybody is a fan of gentrification, but having lived in London for so long I’m very used to the first signs of it, and those are usually a delicatessen, artisan bakery, or modern gentleman‘s barber slowly creeping in to change the facade of the dilapidated local amenities. This gentrifying addition to Rodney street crosses beards with baking, which really might not be the best thing to have in mind if you don’t want wiry hairs in your muffins... I can’t say I found any pube-like nasties in my chocolate, orange and chilli cake, or my americano, but what I did find was a pleasant place for a rest bite whilst wandering the edges of Edinburgh’s new town. In all honesty our server was a little off you might say, borderline rude, much more interested in his smart phone that us, but we didn’t really care. The cake made up for it. 5 stars is high praise indeed, and to be honest it’d only really be 4.5 if could give it, but that’s not allowed, and in a fan of gentrification, so I’m all for promoting it. Go and check out The Bearded Baker if you’re on that side of town, I doubt you’ll be too disappointed.

This is a local of mine and I love it so much. Great coffee, genuinely my favourite flat white in Edinburgh and the baked treats and bagels are to do for. My only criticism is that the male who works there sometimes (the one without glasses), presumably the owner, come across as incredibly unfriendly. I'm a sociable person and enjoy a bit of banter and I think that is what people expect out of a coffee shop when they go. On occasions i've made jokes about wishing i'd come earlier to get a cinnamon bun or asking about the differences in the coffee beans they sell on the shelves but you never so much as get asked how you are or get a friendly smile from him. It's a real shame because it's such a gem of the place. Can't fault the rest of the staff. The girls are all lovely and great chat.

This wonderful, cosy, stylish, long-awaited and welcome addition to Rodney Street does not disappoint. Serving a fabulous range of handmade fare made that morning by the Bearded Baker himself (I grilled him! Despite the queue behind me!) there is something for everyone for breakfast, brunch, lunch, snack or of course just a coffee - which is excellent. There is a daily soup which is always vegetarian that I have yet to try and four different bagel fillings to choose from. The doughnuts are indescribably fluffy, padded with generous, moist fillings such as cranachan or peanut butter. These are truly gourmet doughnuts at their very best. There are daily cakes to choose from if a doughnut doesn't take your fancy. Everything is available for sit in or to take away, but really don't leave it too late in the day or it will all be gone!

This is a church cafe run by volunteers. It says it is an outreach cafe and an asset to the community - but this is hardly the case when the prices are off putting and more expensive than most cafes run as businesses. A very poor cappuccino cost £3.40 and my baked potato was nearly £8. It is set up in a church hall and the volunteers are pleasant but not exactly efficient (my baked potato was left on an adjacent table until I asked where it was). All the members of our table had their food delivered at different times so some were finished before others had started (we ordered together).
