The Bear of Burton in Christchurch

Food was beautiful, service was quick, had a romantic date with my girlfriend here and loved it. They even made the effort to give us a free Anniversary cake which for one was delicious but also so lovely and thoughtful.

What a wonderful place you hosted my sons and daughter in laws wedding 08/03/2025 and everything was perfect from start to finish the rooms,the food and all the bits in between thanking for proving a beautiful place for the event,you all never stopped and we truly appreciated everything you did thank you again. *****

Truly dreadful table service in the restaurant. Went here January 3rd and booked a table for 7 people in advance. Arrived at 7pm, dinner was eventually served (after several chases) at 9pm!! Then they have the audacity to ask for service charge on the bill. Would not visit again or recommend. Been waiting weeks for the pub to call me about my experience, as requested on their on-line survey about my experience. Still waiting - says everything you need to know about the place!!!

Absolutely shocking!! Booked a table for two for Valentine’s Day at what is our local. Usually great service and wonderful food served within a fantastic time frame. Not today - not even a busy evening tonight. Ordered our two courses within in 10 minutes of being sat at our table, waited 40 minutes for our starter and then waited 1hour and 20 minutes for the main course of steak and chips and a burger and chips. Wouldn’t recommend if you’re hungry. Absolute joke! Won’t be returning and will recommend friends and family not to go here.

Stayed at The Bear this week. Have to say that the room was very comfortable, the food was lovely and the staff very helpful. We have docked a point from the rooms for a couple of reasons. We were staying, Goldilocks was on a split level with steps down to the bathroom. It would be helpful if there was a handrail to hold on to when going up and down the 3 steps. Likewise the shower did not have a non slip floor and the anti slip mat was very small. A handrail in the shower might be helpful just in case one slips. There was no clock in the room, so I had to plug my iPad in overnight for a clock. Unfortunately all the power points were on the other side of the bed so the battery ran out about 4.30am. So would we stay here again? The answer is a definite yes. A well eun and comfortable establishment

Such a lovely lovely place, my Nan stayed for the night and me and my parents came and had breakfast with her in the morning, she said the room was amazing she stayed in Ringwood room, staff were so kind! I’ll definitely consider staying here in the future

This is a superb inn where the rooms are lovely. Attention to detail with a Nespresso coffee machine, kettle, tea and fresh milk in the fridge. Biscuits are yummy. The bathroom was great and the Bramley toiletries are fantastic. There was even a doggy cornet with a water bowl, dog toy and treats. The bed is really comfy. The food had been fabulous. Breakfast and dinner. By the end of tonight we would have been here 3 nights. We did not want to eat out as the food here is so good. We have even recommended it to friends who are joining us for dinner tonight and they have booked a room. Tania and TJ have been great. They were attentive and responded well to all requests. Our Boxing Day meal was a return visit from two years ago - our family of twelve, unanimously thought it was certainly as good and even better than 2023. Excellent service, we were not rushed, the food came out virtually together and all our preference requests were fulfil with friendly efficient responses from all the staff. The food was plentiful with seconds if wanted, very well cooked, imaginative dishes and soooo tasty. Well done the chef(s)!! We'll be back...!!

A group of us went for a Christmas meal here. The food was lovely and the pub was decorated beautifully. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Staff were attentive and the ambience was perfect.

We did not stay at the hotel. But we enjoyed a relaxing meal and atmosphere.

Had a Christmas set meal booked for 8. Sat right in the middle of the entrance, a walkway for everyone going to the toilet/bar.. Two of us had starters, mushroom ravioli, was pretty grim. Took ages for the mains, we all had the Turkey roast. When they eventually came to say they were on par with Witherspoons was generous.. Frozen everything.. potatoes were rock solid, cheap disgusting pig in blanket, one slither of carrot and 4 Brussels sprouts.. definitely Turkey off a roll. And a burnt slice of stuffing! Appalling. The rest had pudding, cheesecake about the only thing edible. The poached pears were cold with a burnt, greasy brandy snap. We definitely did not pay full price. Offered a complimentary drink that got added onto the bill and slightly burnt mince pies. What a shame as the decoration of this place is beautiful. Never to eat here again and definitely will not recommend!

We really love this place. This was our third visit and the staff is consistently amazing and always happy to stop for a quick chat, check on drinks, food etc. I had the chance to see the rooms as well and they are really well decorated and cozy. We love their food too, always delicious and well cooked.

Great pub with a lovely atmosphere, even better when the sun shines so you can make use of the garden.

25 of us visited for my friends baby shower and all had roasts, the food was amazing and the staff were so attentive. I had the lamb which was so so good. We also had our own separate area which worked perfectly. Thank you for being such great hosts and giving us a wonderful afternoon. Xxxx

Beautul place. Great Veggie Sunday roast, although portions could have been more generous. Probably the best carrot cake I ever had.

Nice large pub with large garden and car park, serving good food and beer.

Had a 2.2 million pound upgrade 2 years ago, absolutely beautiful, with tastefully decorated bedrooms. Tanya, the manager, was first class. Had a lovely short break.

Had Sunday lunch here. Prawn cocktail and roast beef were delicious.

Well the bear it’s an amazing place, really good food, really good drinks, the staff was super friendly, but as a client I can’t say they were good at serving. First I was sat for drinks, no one came around to bring the menu, then I was sat for food they took ages to come around… I wanted more drinks, no one around, need to always go to the bar to ask… The place and food is amazing, just need to get better in the service.

A nice antique pub with rooms in, to me, a new guise for this site. Maybe a bit too 'bear' themed and small changes in the rooms might have a big pay off but the staff are very good and welcoming, the food is at the top end of 'pub with restaurant' even leaning into gastro and the location is charming. Our room had the best cheval glass I've seen in a pub bedroom. Well worth a visit and stay.

Lovely place and food. Just a shame they were sold out of a lot so had to change our order a few times and we waited 35 minutes for our food, after waiting so long I went and asked where it was no explanation just that “ the kitchen is very backed up “ yet the place was empty. Took a service charge (tip) automatically, have to be honest I don’t think it was deserved today. Shame as we’ve been before and loved it and had a £20 tip in our pocket.

Had lunch here on 7 August. Most of the menu was not available to order but was still showing on boards and menus handed to us at the bar. Ordered from the 2 course set menu. We were told the chicken and ham pies had all been eaten; asked if we could substitute the steak pie (which was cheaper than the chicken but not on the 2 course menu) for the non-available chicken pie. The manager came over and asked us to repeat the order, this time the chicken pies were available and we ordered 2 and they were tasty. Ordered our puddings from the 2 course set menu but our waiter told us all the puddings were not available on the 2 course set menu so this offer was now not available. No one asked us if we had enjoyed our meal and we had to set our own table with the cutlery as the waiter just dropped them down on the side of the table. The pre-set hotel guests had their tables set up in advance and the waiters were more attentive. I feel that this is a restaurant for hotel guests, although only half the tables were taken up for the lunch service, and there seemed to be plenty of staff around ,the service was extremely slow and disorganised. We did like the entertainment during service, a dog escaped from its owner but found its own way to the bar service area and seemed to be really enjoying itself. We were going to recommend this hotel to our friends with dogs who find it difficult to eat and stay in the area with their dog but on reflection of our experience decided not to.

The staff were great, but the food is massively over- priced what you get.

We have driven past many times and thought we would ‘finally’ get round to visiting. Easy online booking process. You are alotted 2 hours to dine which is nice to know you won’t be rushed out. The service was attentive and friendly. Our food was amazing. Decor was nice and atmosphere was inviting. We will go again. We didn’t stay so can’t rate the rooms.

I didn’t stay so can’t judge the rooms. Was a regular many years ago when it was the manor arms but it has been given a massive overhaul and looks smart! Nice food and friendly staff

Pleasant evening in a lovely place

We visit regularly with the dog and have often order something from menu. The quality fresh food is delicious and the ale is very quaffable. The cocktail menu is also very good. It's also very nice to sit on the decking in the sun with the paper. Service is not however very consistent so more focus on driving the customer experince would be welcome. Wish this pub was on one of the local high streets. I recommend it highly.

Had a meal there, didn't stay hence no stars for rooms. Service was ok, but food delivery was slow, although food was good.

Just walked in at 12h05 for a quick spontaneous lunch, only for 2 people sitting outside and the barmaid said it was fully booked as it was Father’s Day but the place was empty so I said we were going to be very quick before everyone will come but she refused and sent us back. I call it lazy and unwelcoming

Expensive but the food looked great

First of all apserloutly date light robbery.... I have ordered a pint of peroni and a glass of rose it comes to £17.64 This is apserloutly disgusting prices this isn't the Ritz I'm so upset to pay this I feel very violated The guy behind the bar had nothing about him didn't make us feel comfortable at all and did not really care to be there Please help boycott this pub I do not recommend this place apserloutly anyone It was only on the radio regarding pubs taking the Mick of prices and this pub has taken no steps to help the public .... We’ve visited the Bear at Burton once for dinner and once for Sunday lunch. In both occasions the food really has been exceptional. It’s expensive but you certainly get what you pay for. We will be back!

Beautiful rooms, Amazing staff and faultless food.. everything we hoped for and more.. Sadly the hospitality business has lost its mojo since COVID but The Bear has it in abundance! We were made to feel important from arrival to checking out, nothing was too much and the Bear theme ran from the door knobs to the Towel art on the beds.. Highly recommend!

You pay up front . So they don't care.first breakfast asked for fried eggs with no membrane . Got two eggs one with a little membrane one with a lot of membrane. Second breakfast decided to have scrambled they came they were budget hotel buffet scrambled eggs but OK. Third breakfast same . Fourth breakfast they looked like a blob of pink glup. I asked what they were and was told they were scrambled eggs..no more breakfast for me....no more Fullers for me..

I stayed as part of a group. The inn did well in working out how to manage a group stay, it wasn't a norm! The service is incredibly friendly! They're all mindful of who people are and their needs. They are a limited number, so when there's a crowd, it may take a little extra time. One evening there was us, a celebration of life, and another group all at once! Testament to how folks like being at the bear! Enjoy the time to converse! The space is well maintained, tastfully decorated with subtle throw outs to the three bears. The rolled up towels like a Teddy Bear were wicked cute, everyone in our group commented on taking pictures when they got to their room. Food! I swear I gained weight it was so good I couldn't help but order too much. Everything on the menu sounds amazing, so I tried as many different things as I was able. It's also a short sweet and changing menu! They know what to do and do it well. I felt the prices were very fair, especially for such good quality. Another note on the skill of the chef- our group was 9 people, we ordered dinner together and every time our meals arrived at the same time with none cold or over set. Timing is the best skill! Everyone was so helpful and protective of my celiac disease. I have never had people so knowledgeable of their menu and mindful of me. I greatly appreciate that. Thank you!! I tried to learn everyone's names, but failed in that duty. I did learn a few, Jake, Sam, Tania, and Emma. I'm very sorry to those I hadn't. Also, Sam's cute puppy Dorothy!

Absolutely wonderful place to stay fantastic breakfast. The rooms are excellent and the double glazing make it quiet and peacfull, great stay here highly recommend A+++

My partner booked us a room as a birthday treat and it’s was wonderful. Our room was stunning, clean and all the little touches of luxury. We also had dinner here and it was the best steak I’ve ever had, we will definitely we back. Thanks so much 😀

What a delight full 2 days. Excellent all round. Great food, great rooms all different and great service. I would recommend this for either a weekend away or just a relaxing meal put to anyone. Well done Fullers and very well done Tania (Mama Bear) and the team. Next time we come we will all search for the "too soft" chair rhat seems to be elluding everyone!!!! You have to stay there to get that one........

Great food good staff beautiful garden

We been coming up for the last 4yr to the new forest but we have never found a great restaurant and bed and breakfast in one that was value for money with luxury. We stayed here last night, what a great gem . Found the manger was so passionate about her job it shows she has got great staff work for her nothing was missing with the final details . Food was excellent, and we had a very chilled, relaxing stay. Breakfast was great too. Very attentive and cosy. Can't wait to return.

Incredible service and incredible food. The staff are super friendly - Chris was our server and he was amazing. I had the venison pappardelle and my husband had the roast chicken - both were 10/10.

Booked a last min getaway.The goldilocks suit was beautifully decorated with a free standing copper bath gorgeous! We had a few cocktails in the bar & supper.The cooking was superb, the steak done to perfection 👌. A fantastic place to go.whether to stay ,eat or just a few drinks.cant wait for warmer weather as extensive outdoor seating. Very impressed with everything, the room,the bar,the food & the staff . Dog friendly bar & rooms to. Well done to you all.

Gem of a place- beautiful bedrooms, fabulous breakfasts and just a lovely ambience for drinks with friends and dinner. Made even better by cuddles with the various dogs who visit with their owners. Cannot fault at all in anything - was recommended this by a friend and after 4 nights, with consistent service and quality,leave really impressed. Highly recommended

Absolutely stunning meal, honestly the best pasta I’ve ever eaten

Terrible food for the extortianate prices. £8.50 on kids menu for a £1 worth of pizza and burger for kids but pushed up with added vegetables that simply do not go with (pizza and tenderstem broccoli)! I ordered a gnocchi with cheese and artichokes. For £21 the portion was eye watering small as a main, hardly 80gr of pasta, the small cheap pre made gnocchi not fresh as you d expect for such a price. Was sent back to the chef as the pasta was plasticky and hard to even chew. To make matters worse the server said it must have happened when they were being blanched! They are not almonds, they are gnocchi made of pasta and potatoes, hence already white! Clearly a rip off of a place hiding behind a very nice and comfortable atmosphere in a pretty location.

We have just spent two very enjoyable nights at The Bear. This is our second visit, along with our golden retriever, in three months. Amazing place with superb food Best Roast I have ever had!, and impeccable service, nothing was too much trouble. Wow, will be going there again!!

We booked an afternoon reservation for my brothers birthday. Amongst our party we have a family member with who is a vegetarian and has a nut allergy. The staff catered extremely well, and were thorough with ensuring there was no nuts around the prep of our parties food. The entire atmosphere of the establishment was lovely. Beautiful green plannelling wall that served as a great backdrop for our updated family photos. The food was delicious and came out promptly. We definitely will come back again!!!!

Nice pub, eaten a few times but can be a bit over priced, not much of a lunch menu so don’t come here to often but a lovely outdoor area in the summer.

Really lovely stay at The Bear. We stayed as a large group of 9, and found all of our needs met by the friendly and attentive staff. Rooms are spacious, well equipped and clean. We stayed in the suite which had a roll-top bath - highly recommended. Food was all cooked perfectly, roasts were plentiful and arrived hot and with lots of gravy. Great place for a meal or beer. Friday special fish and chips for 2 at £15 is a bargin. Plenty of free parking, a great place to visit. Great entertainment on the weekends. Friendly staff.

Been back for a third time. Great food for all of us. The service was fantastic as always and special thanks to Sam who was very attentive. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. We will be returning.

Lovely setting, was a table for family dinner, we were a bit squeezed in, even though there was plenty of space around us, setting and service was great, sadly the food wasn't setting the world on fire, and didn't feel value for money when you look at the prices, shame

The food was good, but not the best pub grub I've ever tasted. It's a limited traditional menu with a few specials that run out quickly. We ordered three crumbles for dessert but only two were left. It was a Wednesday night so that may explain the lack of orders. It's a very nice pub restaurant with friendly service, but the food could be a better quality.

What can I say other than very disappointed. A group of 9 of us went for dinner in their restaurant, the service was very slow - waited an hour and a half for our meals and unfortunately it was not worth the wait! My Mac & cheese was very watery, the burger was very underwhelming and the portion sizes did not match the price. They have a limited menu anyway (so I would advise checking before going) but even then they had ran out of many of the options before it was even 7pm - the restaurant didn't appear too busy. The waitress appeared a little skatty and we had to keep repeating our orders to ensure they wrote it down correctly. The setting was lovely and they offer pub quizzes every now and then, but I wouldn't say it had any wow factor, especially for its price. I'm not usually one to complain about a restaurant but the service and food really disappointed me on this occasion.

An enjoyable outside space for both eating and drinking. The bedrooms are nicely decorated and very well-presented. The menus are varied and offer something for everyone. Well done the Bear of Burtons.

The Bear Friendly, good service, clean and great food, close to Mudeford, the New Forest and Christchurch. A great place for group gatherings, we had my mothers wake here and the staff where friendly, professional and very attentive, the layout of the pub area and the set up was perfect. Lovely decor and the staff went above and beyond to cater for all our needs. Thank you so much everyone at the Bear.

Our table booked for 2 at 7pm. Unfortunately our food did not arrive at our table until 8.10pm. There also appeared to be a function which inevitably made the bar really busy and customers were queuing into the restaurant area which felt noisy and chaotic. Children were also wandering and running around whilst people were eating. However when our food finally arrived it was very nice. Wouldn’t return in a hurry

We've just recently spent two fantastic nights at the Beer of Burton, Christchurch😊 using it as a base for a wedding celebration 🎉 The rooms were amazing, all very unique and decorated to a very high standard and the cleaning was spotless😊 The staff were so freindly and welcoming and couldn't do enough for us 😊 The food was also off a very high standard 😋 It's location was only a short distance from the coast and we enjoyed it so much a return visit will definitely be happening 😁 Thanks you for taking great care off us 🥰

Visited for a meal Saturday. Live singer in main bar. We ate off the side. 3 steaks , fish and chips, side dish, dessert and beers only £190 for 4 people. Clean toilets and outside area. Off beaten track, but worth a visit.

Enjoyed dinner good food friendly staff. Dog friendly ideal for dropping in after a walk or enjoying meal with friends. Large roomy car park and also plenty of outside seating. Well worth a visit.
