The Avon Causeway in Christchurch

We regularly come for drinks, and had a great lunch as a family this weekend. Great service, excellent food and really great staff. Great experience all round thank you again.

Lovely countryside old-fashioned pub. Fireplace, clean, spacious . Service is lovely and friendly, food delicious and they make lovely coffee as well as good cold beer

Great location and nice place to stay, however there were some issues when we stayed: No hot water in men’s toilets and hand dryer lasted less than 2 seconds Several meals and wines shown on menu were not available Full English breakfast was NOT included in price (supplement payable) Early breakfast was NOT available despite clearly being stated on the welcome note in the room….. chef said ‘No’ ! Coffee and tea in room but you have to ask for milk at the bar. Lastly they add a service charge to the bill which is relatively normal however the service was pretty poor given the above!! 5/10

The staff at The Avon Causeway could not be more helpful! Nothing is too much trouble and they go over and above to ensure your stay exceeds your expectations. This is our second stay over the festive period and we will certainly return! Thank you to Amanda, Sarah, Colin and the rest of the team.

An amazing establishment with friendly, polite, attentive staff. Gorgeous food and beautiful room with the bonus of being very dog friendly. A bit of road noise but not enough to disturb us. Thank you everyone.

Saturday lunch. We have taken to dropping in to the Avon Causeway for lunches. It is very handy for the New Forest. The staff are always cheerful and helpful and the food is well priced, interesting and good quality and value. Thank you all very much and a Happy New Year.

Even tho I used to clean the rooms I expect they have changed so I can’t rate them as I don’t no x The food was a disappointment steak was to blue! It was fatty and chewy but I suppose that’s what you get when all they have to offer is rump! The main attraction wasn’t available, we had the calamari and it was really over done and my burger was over cooked and chewy didn’t help that the land lady dropped my husbands plate all over him but in spite of all of that the staff are amazing and so friendly

Exceptional service matched great food! Family and friends went for Sunday lunch and we had the best time. Food was plentiful and so tasty. Flynn our waiter was amazing, so attentive. Nothing was too much trouble, we would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

We stayed at the Avon Causeway overnight before taking an early flight from Bournemouth airport, and the location was perfect. Under 10 minutes to departures. Parking for our week away was included in the price of the room/ complementary. We received a warm welcome from the landlord who was helpful in every way. The room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. Heating was adjustable to suit individual comfort. Both room and bathroom were spotless. The shower operation was straightforward (a bonus for me!) and water was hot! We didn't have dinner but the menu looked inviting. Our departure was too early for breakfast, but we were provided with a packed snack to keep us going.

We love The Avon Causeway. The staff are excellent and the food is brilliant. I had my 70th birthday on the Old Railway Train it was fantastic. My sister and I went for lunch in the restaurant yesterday. the service, the staff and the food were exceptional.

I’ve been to The Avon Causeway several times now. It’s lovely to see the attention to detail in the pub and hotel’s heritage. Clearly, there is a lot of love for the venue to fascinate everyone from children to adults, regardless of whether you’re a train enthusiast or not. On this occasion, I went for a lovely pre-Christmas lunch with work colleagues and friends. The service was wonderful and considerate, the team were friendly and approachable and, even though the venue itself was busy, it was a good-spirited busy with people behaving responsibly and chatting amiably. A great time was had by all!

Amazing place with fantastic staff who go above and beyond to make your stay a comfortable one. Always very accommodating for myself with my spinal cord injury. Quick to help with bags and always leave extra bedding for the support I need in bed. No lift here, but luckily I’m able to navigate stairs, albeit very slowly. Food is also delicious and breakfast top quality. A small supplement for a few of the items on the menu but most is included in the room charge. We now stay regularly when we’re in the UK.

Disappointing Christmas Festive Afternoon Tea Greated and given a table, which had lovely Christmas Decs. Very quiet in the pub and this is where it went downhill. We were given our tea on a platter (not usual three tier cake stand), this is where we realised it had come straight out of the fridge. Jam and cream were hard, not able to spread them probably. Asked for tea and waiter said he wasn't sure it came with tea. Asked for scones to be warmed, again waiter said he didn't know what to do, I suggested a microwave, he eventually said the grill was still warm so could do something. Requested prior to coming that we didn't want chilly jam, however this was on the sandwich. The only nice thing was the homemade scotch egg. Didn't have an enjoyable experience, maybe shouldn't do afternoon tea, as this didn't seem popular and hence why we had a pre made tea straight out of the fridge.

Brought my parents for a birthday lunch ,, the restaurant was delightful , nice and warm and very cosy , the staff were brilliant , nothing was too much trouble and the food was fab , we had a very lovely lunch thankyou so very much .

Fantastic family trip had! 2 adults and 2 kids all fantastically looked after, from the smiling check in gentleman who offered to help with bags up to the room, to Amanda for breakfast who could not have helped more with helping getting the kids well fed for the day. The cleaning lady was also fantastic even after I explained my son had been ill in the night, so understanding and caring. I travel a lot for work and I've never been somewhere where every person was as friendly as this pub! If I had work near here I would be in this pub every time! The rooms were big and well looked after, nice selection of tea and coffee. The breakfast was large and perfectly cooked and supplied with a smile. The surroundings are safe with lots of good parking! 10 out of 10, well done team!

This was our 5th time there. Food, location and the service were all excellent. Highly recommended. Just been again. Still excellent in every way looking forward to our next visit.

Warm friendly welcome. Good food and drink. Comfortable rooms. A bit of railway nostalgia thrown in. What's not to like? (Noise from nearby dual carriageway, tbh)

We’ve stayed in a few Butcombe inns, and this one is not as charming as some of the others. Still a cozy place though. The staff are absolutely fantastic, though. We were displaced by a storm at our other inn, and they accommodated us with no fuss. Some day I want to come back and have a party in the Pullman car!

Being local we met up with friends for Sunday lunch. Having had snacks there on previous visits we were disappointed with our Sunday roast . The lunch arrived but the presentation was poor. Potatoes and veg were underneath the meat which made them soggy with a large overdone yorkshire on top of everything. Disappointing to find 10% added to bill as a service charge which was not noticed at the time

Went for pre Christmas meal Both of us not drinking Amazed to find a draft IPA with almost no alcohol on tap ! Made for a very enjoyable evening Waiter service for meals and drinks Left and drive home with no worries

Met a friend for lunch, the restaurant has a lovely ambience and was warm which was most welcome on a cold December day. The food was wonderful and the service impeccable. Highly recommended!

4 of us had an excellent lunch at the Avon Causeway. The service was very good and presentation and the quality of the meal was without doubt A1. The Avon Causeway has a pleasant atmosphere and tables are laid out in a way that makes it feel spacious. We highly recommend this establishment.

Lovely pub , nice staff , food good , nice and clean and great to be able to park whilst away. Unfortunately we was in room 1 and we only got a couple hours of sleep due to the bed being so uncomfortable the mattress was poor. we could feel every spring and pump in it ! Also I had the app Butcombe for 25% of on a Wednesday saying I had saved 10.00 off our meal which was great but noticed they had added a 8.00 something service charge which I thought was a bit cheeky so really didn't save anything

Stayed here before flying out of Bournemouth early the next day. Ate in the bar in the evening and the beef pie was beautiful with great service. Room was nice and clean with everything we needed. Nice outside area - will definitely be back on a summer's evening.

The room was very clean and a comfortable bed. The service in the restaurant was excellent, the food was delicious. Our dog enjoyed his time there.

As always a warm friendly welcome at one of our favourite places to stay. Has all went need, a great location and enjoyable menu.

Beautiful bedroom, extremely clean. Staff are fantastic and helpful. Food quality is excellent. Highly recommended. The only problem I had was finding the entrance to hotel which is down a dark unlit track off a muddy layby with no signage.

We visited The Avon Causeway with family for a birthday meal.We were accommodated perfectly considering we were a large party of 11.The service was brilliant,a busy Sunday lunchtime and the staff were attentive,cheerful and professional.The food was top notch and the atmosphere was welcoming.Looking forward to another visit soon.

My father and I had a lovely roast after a long dog walk across the forest. Food was really good and the service was great. Even the dogs were made welcome and had a lovely time. We will definitely return.

Fantastic location on the outskirts of Bournemouth, a stones throw from the airport and also lots of lovely walks on the door step. Staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. Food was excellent, good wholesome British pub classics. Beer was amazing too! Highly recommended.

We had a lovely overnight stay. The lady who checked us in was really thoughtful, she saw my Dad had mobility issues, and swapped his room for a more accessible one. Lovely refreshment tray in room including fresh milk, and cafetiere coffee. Generous toiletries. Super comfy bed! Tasty granola for breakfast.

All staff polite and helpful. Rooms lovely but creaky beds. Room doors could do with a soft closing as quite loud when closing. Banging water pipes. Eggs benedict for breakfast really tasty. Asked for side of 'Hash browns' on cooked breakfast but only got 1 but states plural on menu. The choc au pain came out very well done so i asked for it to be changed and second one came out worse and chocolate burnt inside. The early morning takeaway breakfast was very pitiful, for a four star hotel, as shown on photo. This was for 2 people. Would stay here again but leave travelling later so we could get a decent breakfast.

Food overpriced and not great, not much atmosphere

I love this pub. It's on the old Hurn railway station, so the pub does have a railway theme throughout. Beautifully decorated. It's a large spacious place with loads of seating inside and plenty outside for that drink in the summer sunshine. The food is amazing, portion size more than enough. All freshly cooked to order. There is a delightful selection of drinks, something for everyone. Personally, I go for the Butcombe Gold. Delicious. The staff have always been professional and attentive. I would recommend the Avon Causeway to anyone. Infact, I would say it is one of the best pubs in the area.

Eight of us stayed after a golf match in Purbeck. The rooms, food and particularly the service was excellent. Our waiter was very personable and a model of efficiency. Entrance to the hotel/ car park could be improved albeit a minor issue.

Our second stay with yourselves and as previously we intend to return. The staff are always exceptionally friendly with nothing being too much trouble, from the morning greetings to the evening bar staff we were made to feel very welcome. The only issues we had were, the shower being over the bath. As a disabled person I couldn't access either however, I didn't make this clear on booking so I realise I am to blame. The carpet in our room wasn't hoovered very well and I picked up bits that had been left, and the radiator in the bathroom was scolding hot and we couldn't turn it down. Disregarding these two small issues and me not booking correctly, we have arrived back in the Midlands feeling rested and well fed. Thanks especially to Sarah for your support and advice x

Only went for dinner with friends and it was very enjoyable, food was great staff were obliging, all round a lovely evening.

Avon Causeway is a great place to stay. Comfortable rooms, very good food and friendly staff. If you are staying in the area or touring I would recommend this hotel. Also very good if you are catching a flight or travelling by ferry and need a stopover. Have stayed here 4 times now. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

Fantastic Sunday Roast, great service. I couldnt fault anything about this place… until One of the staff, may be even the manager came over to tell us off as we had let our kids (9-11) play in their play park whilst waiting flr food. Instead lf just telling us nicely that kids needed to be supervised by an adult, she went on to obnoxiously advise that it is clearly stated on the sign (beside the play park). Totally unnecessary attitude, we didnt know. Think this person needs to work on people skills.

What an amazing B&B! We were on a short break to seaside and we found this gem! About 20 minutes away from Sandbanks Beach, with beautiful rooms, fresh milk and proper coffee. Superb food menu for evening and breakfast. Staff extremely friendly and helpful! Thank you for making our time so enjoyable!

Spent a night at the Avon Causeway with my family, 14 in total, to celebrate my parents 60th Anniversary. The rooms were very comfortable and spacious, and spotlessly clean. The staff were very polite, helpful and accommodating and the venue itself is pretty unique, with its setting, history and nod to its history. Could not fault the food, our evening meal and cooked breakfasts were delicious.

We stayed for a weekend with the family and had a lovely time. The staff were lovely, the food was great and the building itself was gorgeous. Our room was so comfy and had been spotlessly cleaned! Really enjoyed our stay!

I made a group booking for 5 rooms for a wedding and no one could fault our stay. Rooms were comfy and clean. Breakfast was amazing constantly making sure we had enough tea coffee and toast. It’s located really well for walks. If you have a wedding nearby then this is the place to stay

A really nice place in a lovely setting, good food and friendly staff and the rooms are nice

A reasonable if flat beer (pulling from a height is not the same as using a sparkler!), a nice pudding for two to share, and we sat in the sun next to a beautiful old railway carriage. A small pub chain they may be but I kinda liked it!

Stayed 1 night prior to a holiday flying from Bournemouth airport. Absolutely amazing! Staff were all so friendly and accommodating, beautiful pub and location. Food was superb and room was lovely. Plus free parking for a week and just a 5 minute taxi ride to the airport. Amazing value for money! 👍🏼 Can’t recommend enough.

I left my designer sunglasses on Sunday, and when I came back a few days later, a lady asked if I was the one who left them. I didn’t even realize I had lost my sunglasses. Such a nice and honest lady—thank you so much. The Sunday roast was amazing too. Very fast WiFi 🛜

Came for a roast before our flight! Roast pork was 10/10! We ordered an extra side of cauliflower cheese! Very happy with this being our first roast now the 'ber months are here!

We have stayed at Butcombe pubs before and always enjoyed them so we knew what to expect as regards food, drink and service which were all very good. The location is good being very close to Hurn airport but unfortunately our room was quite close to the dual carriageway which was pretty noisy, especially as we had the windows open because the weather was good. The room was nice and large and we had our dog with us who was made very welcome. We had dinner one night which was really nice and a great choice of beers and wines. Breakfast was very nice also. I am at steam Railway fan so the fact it was an old railway station was super interesting. Thank you to the staff for looking after us.

Stayed for the weekend at the Avoncauseway to celebrate my parents diamond wedding. Excellent accommodation, lovely food and very attentive staff. Can't recommend enough

A great pub with very good Butcombe beer. Restaurant has a varied enough menu and a very good children's menu. Interesting things to read about the railway it's next to. Plenty of free parking.

I was really happy with my stay here. The staff are really friendly. The room was well furnished, clean and the bed really comfortable. The breakfast was very good. It is a quirky venue because it was a train station. I liked the effort made to decorate the pub/restaurant with a lot of sympathy to its history. It is quite close to a busy road, which you can hear with the room windows open or in the garden. However, when closed the windows block the noise and I don’t hold it against the place as they can’t re-route the road!

Nice location, and a good piece of history. Food was very nice and service was good. But beware....The price of drinks is ridiculas. £9.30 for a 250ml glass of wine. And I know things have gone up over the years, but not this much. Really spoilt a nice afternoon paying just under £20 for 2 glasses of wine. Won't be going there again.

Bedroom only had 1 chair when there were 2 of us staying and despite requesting a 2nd chair was told that none were available!!!

Stayed here for 2 nights when going to a family wedding. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast quality was excellant, freshly cooked using good quality ingrediants. Likewise the provision of fresh milk, tea and coffee were all quality products. Bathroom was spotless and toiletries were again of a really high quality. We enjoyed the stay and would happily use the Avon again. The reason, we have not posted a 5 star review was that the room lighting wasn't bright enough and made the room quite dark, however we managed.

Excellent find. We booked for its location but it turned out to be much better than expected. Superb friendly staff, accommodation and food it was a pleasure to stay there.

I had reserved 230pm last Sunday and we turned up, absolutely amazed at how pretty the pub was. We had our dog with us and they were most accommodating. There was a fresh water bowel outside. We decided to sit outside, but if you go inside the pub and restaurant, it is absolutely immaculate. We decided being a Sunday we would have a quaintly British roast dinner and it did not disappoint. Normally there is always something on a Sunday roast that lets sit down when you cook it yourself, but this was absolutely perfect. the drinks were served in lovely glasses and in keeping with the age of the building. Would I return here, absolutely yes. The manager should be proud of it Staff as they worked really hard and absolutely lovely team.

We stayed at the Avon Causeway hotel for one night in August and we loved it! A lovely place to stay, great location, wonderful staff who were very attentive and really good food, we were going into Christchurch for something to eat the evening we arrived but because we were a little tired from a long journey and sightseeing during the day we decided to have our evening meal at the hotel, great choices on the menu and extremely good quality ingredients and the beer 🍺 was top notch. The Rooms are a little small but exceptionally clean with a lovely big comfortable bed and the en-suite shower is powerful. Breakfast was included in the price and was very, very good. You get one choice from the menu which is brilliant and includes things like a “full English “ or “eggs Benedict” and even Eggs royale with fresh salmon and much more, all freshly cooked. I would highly recommend staying at this Butcome owned hotel with a great host and history
