What a find! Out with friends on a most unseasonal day in June. It was freezing! Anna made us feel so welcome, like we were long lost family. We wanted a light lunch. Amazing toasted sandwiches, with “proper” home cooked ham. She did us some extra chips on the side without us asking for them, on the house. They were delicious. All food freshly prepared. As we were the last to leave, she sat down and had a very interesting chat with us. An amazing lady, who runs a top notch cafe.

We stayed in Aberdovey for a week and went here after reading the reviews. The food was brilliant, home cooked, plentiful and very good value. What really makes the place, though, is the lovely owner, Anna, who goes out of her way to make you feel welcome, make sure you have enough and generally just makes you feel very much at home. They're not licensed for alcohol but she is very happy to let customers take their own alcohol and put it to chill for them. Best hostess I've ever met and the restaurant is pretty and homely with great views. Highly recommended

Poor food. My cheese sandwich lacked cheese! I asked for a diet Coke...they didn't have any. Asked for any diet drink and was given diluted apple juice with flat fizzy water! No toilets for general customer use, but the lady said we could use their staff toilets which were right off the kitchen (which was clean,). Toilet was grim!!The staff were pleasant enough, but I would not recommend.

Wow is the only thing I can say about this little Cafe. Arrived in Aberdovey and after settling into our cottage we went looking for dinner. We looked at all the normal pubs but this place was empty and quiet so we went in.The owner was polite and friendly and gave us a lot of useful information about the area.We ordered dinner and like I said WOW.Steak and kidney pie and chips, pie hand made and cooked fresh to order, proper chunks of steak, and tender not chewy and no fat or grissel, and proper kidney and in large chunks and served red hot, and the gravy is proper gravy and I have to admit I am not a big fan of pies, but this pie is is worth a day trip just to have and for £6.25 approx it is worth every penny. The picture does not do this pie justice.

We got to Aberdovey on Friday evening and everywhere was booked up. Wandering around we stumbled over The Bear of Amsterdam and thought we would give it a try. The welcome we got when we went in was what made us stay, two ladies who were just absolutely lovely sat us at the window seat so we could see the sea as we had our meal. The atmosphere in there is warm and friendly and the prices are extremely reasonable. You can't argue two lots of (giant!) fish and chips and two drinks for £20. The meal tasted fresh and it was plentiful, the menu fairly small but when they do fish like that it doesn't matter, it was great. We visited this restaurant as there was very little else open in late November in Aberdyfi and we wanted to have a light lunch rather than pub meal. The food was good, home cooked and due to the portion size our light lunch turned out to be somewhat larger than planned but still at a very reasonable price. I had fish fingers and chips, was expecting about 3 to 4 fish fingers, but there were 7 on the plate, a generous portion. The 2 ladies who owned/ran the café were very helpful and attentive and I was particularly impressed by the way they attended to 2 elderly gentlemen who had arrived separately and who appeared to be regulars. A little attention to detail in service goes a long way - they offered to bring us a carafe of water to the table as we'd finished our hot drinks, most cafes would wait until you asked for water, or offer to sell you another drink. The food was good, but the attitude of the owners really made it a great place to eat. The only downside is that the café is small and you may struggle to get a seat at busy times in summer, but that wasn't a problem in late November.

Generous portion of cod in a delicious light crispy batter, as many chips as you can eat and all the usual accompaniments! The bear is a cafe and therefore fine dining it is not, it isn't licensed and they didn't even have a toilet available the evening we went, but somehow this didn't matter - the fish n chips won us round! If it's good old British fish n chips that you're after - this is as good as it gets!!

I visited with my parents for a quick sandwich stop on the first day of our trip to North Wales, having sought out the cafe based on the positive reviews on Tripadvisor. We ordered some sandwiches (ham ones and a cheese one) and for the princely sum of over £4 each we were treated to possibly the lowest common denominator of sandwich you could imagine. A measly filling between two slices of the cheapest, thinnest bread available. I had to check to confirm I was in the correct place as I couldn't believe the reviews were correct. A little salad garnish? a few crisps on the side?, not a chance, just the sort of sandwich you'd get for 90p in Asda. What we did get in abundance though was the owner humiliating the nice lady waitress, by ordering her about as if she didn't know how to clear a table or make some tea. I'm sure she was as embarrassed as we were uncomfortable. I, in turn, am still embarrassed for taking my mum and dad there on the first day of our holiday expecting a nice simple lunch and instead getting ripped off, which to be frank, we were. I can't comment on what the rest of the menu is like, there were no other customers, so I had nothing to compare. Maybe that was the clue. There was only one positive, and that was the waitress who served us. She did a good job under duress. I only hope she left soon after us to work for someone who will show her a bit more respect.

What do you do if your husband is taken into hospital more than 2 hours away and you are therefore left without your chef?We took friends from the Midalnds to The Bear of Amsterdam for lunch over the May Bank Holiday weekend. In spite of the difficulties, the food was as good as always and the service as jolly as usual.Properly cooked good quality food always takes some beating. We can't resist really good fish and chips - with the added advantage of a brilliant view over the Dyfi Estuary towards Borth and Ynys Lâs.- You can't beat it.

...we have finally eaten here.,..and yes, it is as good as its reputation. The fabled 'cod and chips' filled the plate with a generous portion which in turn filled us.Good friendly (homely) service with odd snippets of village news thrown in.We will not wait another 35 years before returning!

I went to this restaurant with husband, sister and brother-in-law on Friday night. You do have to book in the season as it is very small and very well known. we all went for the cod and chips and they were so good .the portion size is just right. It is a very welcoming small restaurant overlooking the sea ,the service was excellent. The Lady who owns the restaurant gives you time and is so chatty and friendly .Menu as others have said is limited but my tip is just go for the fish and chips. Lovely light and crisp batter . You are also allowed to take drinks in with you from the pub next door as this restaurant is not licenced.

Scanning the water front of Aberdovey for lunch with the kids, we stumbled upon this sweet small restaurant. The lady of the house was very welcoming and made us feel immediately at ease. The menu card has a limited but varied selection of food. We went for the fish: plaice with chips and jacketed potato and cod with chips. The fish was very fresh, the chips and potatoes plentiful. Vegetables were ok, but I would prefer a bit more veggies over the amount of chips.Overall, our bellies were filled nice and round and we left the restaurant with a nice story on ‘The Bear of Amsterdam’, a Spanish ship that got stuck in the Aberdovey bay in the 16th century, and that gave the restaurant it’s name.

My partner and I visited for food during our stay. I found my meal (Plaice and Chips) to be very good, though my partner found her soup only OK, but her accompanying sandwich was very nice. This could have been due to the fact that she was under the weather with cold/flu. We had a very good welcome (though we were the only people in at the time) and the place was very clean and tidy.I would definitely visit again.

We stopped here for breakfast twice, having been disappointed by the service at another establishment. The breakfast rolls are tasty, especially the sausages, and both the tea and coffee were good. Fair prices and very friendly service. Outdoor seating where you can eat your food whilst enjoying the beautiful views of Llanberis and its surroundings. Also does delicious cakes, milkshakes and hot chocolate. Highly recommended.

I'm actually gutted to be writing this review as we thought we had found a good haunt when we first tried last week. 2 adults & 2 children all had a lovely lunch time meal the previous week so we rebooked for the 2 adults for an evening meal the following weekend. The starter was lovely for both of us but we both ordered fillet steak for our main and I don't know what meat it was but it certainly wasn't a beef steak. It didn't look like one, taste like one or even cut like one. I was genuinely gutted as it has put me off going back again because I feel like it's just rude to expect somebody not to notice and left feeling like we've been totally ripped off. You don't order a fillet steak if you don't know exactly what to expect on your plate so the audacity to think you can pull that off is unbelievable. I can't complain about the service, both times it has been spot on, lovely women but unfortunately we won't be returning after been served that.

On a recent visit to Barmouth we found this little Gem of a place that is open on Sundays. There was a special board out side and it was the Cheese and Onion pie that drew us in . Both my husband and me had this and it came with new potatoes and salad . It was delicious and very reasonably priced . We were naughty and were too tempted by the delicious homemade sweets and puds they had to offer . I had the jam and coconut cake and my husband opted for the apple pie. They were presented lovely with fruit and a pot of cream on the side. The staff were friendly and attentive. Will definitely be returning next time we are in Barmouth
