The Beano Cafe & Family Restaurant in Thanet

I went here with my son and ordered food and drinks, including a banana milkshake. They served a strawberry milkshake. Instead of acknowledging their error, they wanted me to pay for a replacement. I declined and ultimately ended up getting the food refunded and going elsewhere. Quite why they didn’t just wear the cost price of probably 50p and change the milkshake I don’t know.

Lovely fish and chips and friendly staff

They were so rude. My friend had payed for takeaway and then decided she wanted to sit with us. She had already payed full price for her food and they charged her an extra £1 for sitting down with us. They didn't even allow us to drink our own bottled water. The food was okay but the sauces tasted like plastic. We witnessed them be extremely rude to another customer because he drank his own water, shouting at him to leave his store and never come back. When we were eating they kept staring at us like we were gonna steal something. They were very racist. Never coming back again.

The fish and chips was ok, but not as good as your local. The service was just unbelievably rude. It was such a disappointment to our day visit to Margate. You have to pay cash, which is another inconvenience.

We came here Friday evening and had fish & chips , was very nice tasty fresh & hot we came back for breakfast Saturday greeted with friendly welcome again & food tasty

Small fish and lots and lots of dry chips and not tasty burger and greasy cutlery. Ordered for over £80.00 worth of food. Staff wouldn’t even give a glass of tap water for my children and told us not to drink our own water. Children couldn’t even finish their food and I asked for a take away box and was told to pay 50p. The man was so rude. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy.

I am very disappointed about this fish and chip shop firstly I was not allowed to sit inside as they were closing and they said take away only secondly is cash only which is a bit of a pain however instead of sleeping last night in my bed I was on the toilet throughout the night. Not the best of experience for me Loads of other fish and chips shops

Rude manager. Mushy peas just a green gloop. Vastly overpriced. A poor young waitress looking so overworked. No air con. Horrendous. Update - still horrendous. I looked thro the window. 100 degrees F

The portion sizes are good it’s a shame they’re racist. Myself and my family came in to end the day with a lovely portion of fish and chips. We requested to eat inside but were told that they were not accepting dine in customers. We accepted and ordered our boxes for take away. Unfortunately before leaving, another family came in and was welcomed to sit down and eat. When I questioned this, I was told that we could not sit down as there were too many orders. So then I asked if we could sit down and eat our purchased order. The (assumed) owner denied this and became quite hostile. This experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. Very bad service and a poor explanation. The only excuse is that my family is black and the next family to come in were white. Very poor attitude and quite frankly disgusting.

Very grotty and dirty looking inside. We wanted to sit at the tables outside to eat so they said we had to eat out of takeaway boxes as we weren't allowed plates outside, which is ok. However, the man serving must not have realised and accidentally put the food on plates. So trying to be nice, I said not to worry, we'll come and eat inside. They then said they would charge us an extra £3. We have to pay £3 for their mistake, really? I said no I'm not paying any extra, we'll eat outside. So they removed the food from the plates and we ate outside. The food was not good. When it was time to leave I picked up the takeaway boxes thinking to put them in the bin inside the restaurant. I waved to the man working who became weirdly aggressive and told me to take the boxes to the bin nextdoor. The shop nextdoor was closed and I couldn't see any bins there so I took the boxes back to our table, at which point the man became even more hostile. I don't know why he has a problem with putting the rubbish from his restaurant into his own bin. But we won't be going back, that's for sure.

Nice food, could have been cooler in the restaurant

4 adults and 1 child went in to eat.My granddaughter has autism and a eating disorder.My daughter ask very politely (after explaining the situation) if ,as there was 4 adults eating would it be OK if my granddaughter eat a small pack lunch while we ate.The answer was no,and wouldn't buge on it.WE ALL WALKED OUT. This place must be making a killing to turn down £70 ,for the sake of a disabled child very small packed lunch.

I had a very disappointing experience at this establishment. I ordered takeout and added two pickles to my order. The employee at the desk told me it would cost an additional £2. I agreed and said I would pay by card, as I didn't have cash on me. Shockingly, he claimed it was impossible to pay by card and proceeded to remove the pickles from my plate with his fingers. This was both unhygienic and unprofessional. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this place. P.S. I retrieved the pickles using the fork that came with my takeaway order. Your reaction to my review and unfounded accusations further prove your poor customer service.

Horrible food, old oil, watery mushy peas. Waste of money.

We went to Margate for a family day out. We. Went. In to. This cafe. We order the food come the. Burgers did not taste like a proper burger and. My little. Girl has ended up. With food poisoning from this. Place we will. Not be eating from here again

Incredibly outdated, ancient pictures on the wall and the interior definitely needs a redo. Cash only I believe which is a pain. But... friendly staff were welcoming, it was all clean, toilets were alright and the food was nice. Would go back. Often a quieter place to eat when going to Dreamland too as Wetherspoons will be rammed.

Food is very cheap, cheap ingrediants used. So that explains that. Service ok, neither friendly or unfriendly. Place is dirty though.

The apple crumble was a bit burned and the chips were a a little crunchy. The vegetarian burger was okay and the tea was a reasonable £1.50

Amazing breakfast! Perfect greasy spoon brekkie - both quality and portion size! Wonderful staff - friendly, polite, attentive and told a good joke! Always love a Beano cafe 😊 Anyone rating this place poorly clearly doesn't respect and understand the gem that is a greasy spoon cafe!

Sat in and enjoyed a great piece of battered cod with chips and mushy peas, washed down with a mug of tea for £15, food was great and there are quite a lot of tables so you should always be able to be accommodated here. Staff were all nice. The place overlooks the bay.

Saveloy and chips turned up cold.. wasn’t given a fresh one.. was handed the same one back after 2-3 people had touched it.. and nuked it in the microwave! Burger was most probably not beef.. but an unknown substance.. no taste and a rubbery texture..

On a family visit to Margate we stumbled across this cafe looking for some lunch. We were greeted with a 'hello', but that's where the pleasantries ended. I verbally relayed our order whilst my daughter popped to the toilet. - 2x medium cod & chips - 1x kids fish & chips - 1x just cod (no chips) - 1x orange juice - 1x diet coke Total £47.50!!!!!! Just as I was about to hand over the cash, I questioned the cost. It was only at this stage that I was informed there is no kids option, or portions of fish available to purchase on their own. I politely said 'thank you, I think we'll go somewhere else'. It was at that point we were charged £1 for my daughter's use of the toilet. I'm writing this sitting at a much more pleasant eatery just around the corner, and as I've now had time to read other past reviews of the Beano cafe, I'm feeling happier that it only cost us £1 to dodge a bullet.

Best cod and chips in all of margate.

Unfortunately found this place after trying to find somewhere that would seat 6 of us as it was a busy bank holiday, we now know why it wasn't too busy 😞 hot drinks came out and had ask 4 minutes later for our cold bottled drinks , food came out in dribs and drabs , 2 all day breakfast ls were ok and kids meals , I ordered a Pukka pie which it definitely wasn't and our son's meal still didn't arrive until 15 minutes later after asking twice. We had to then ask for cutlery, I was suspicious of my pie as it definitely was not a pukka pie and when I cut it open it was hard in the middle , not seeing any steam I put my finger in there and it was frozen ! I gave it back and opted for sausage and chips but had to ask for our money back for the price difference, I'm glad I didn't put any in my mouth ! We won't visit again.

Come in today to get a chilli con carne the rice tasted like rubber. The chilli tasted in like It was in a tin. My cousin got the burger it was full of oil. Chips were cold

Covid has made things bad and I have always eaten out and I have to say the food my partner and I had served to us was not fit for human consumption. The rock was like rubber and the chips could have choked you to death as they were rock hard. I will never step foot into that place again. The food is over priced and disgusting. If i didn’t have to give a star i wouldn’t have given one.

Cheap and cheerful fish and chip café in Margate. nothing amazing, but when you're at the seaside, sometimes you want the classic, and this is just that. When I was there it seems a little dark towards the back of the café, lights were not on. But apart from that, service was good, food tasted as you would expect, staff were courteous and polite. It is a good place to grab something to eat

Honestly I did not enjoy my experience here the service was slow but I have to say the staff we friendly. But still I have to talk about how outdated this restaurant was, me and a few other people would also agree. So overall not impressed with this establishment. 1 star.

Honestly I never leave reviews but this place was so horrible I have too. Not only were the Staff incredibly rude to me the food was greasy and not edible. I was in shock when I left even the other customers picked up on the level of rudeness I was dealing with when I left. Do not go here.

I was going to the ladies while my fiancée was ready to order at the quill, They said I only be able to use the areas after the order had been paid, they only receive cash and didn't have any ads outside. I believe they don’t declare taxes properly I was going to the bathroom while my fiancé was ready to place the order in line, they said I could only use the areas after the order was paid, they only took cash and had no announcements saying on the door, longer line. I believe they don't file taxes correctly

I was attacked inside the restaurant by the owner, I tried to go to the bathroom and they forcibly removed me. I don't recommend anyone to go to this restaurant.

VERY RUDE STAFF on entry, rudely demanded we order our food first before our young child could use the toilet who was very in need. I understand that this might be the restaurants policy but such desperate situations happen and we were forced to make a quick selection. I actually felt upset by such a rude and forceful manner from the waiter and didn't enjoy my meal. I have never experienced such rude and demanding customer service, it totally spoilt our eating experience and i will never be returning to Beano Cafe again.

Food was great. Not many places we could find that you could sit in so was very pleased to find this spot.

They chucked us out because my son was very thirsty and he couldn't go to the front to buy the water bottle as he is only 7 I was in the loo when this happened. My sister was with them however the purse was with me.... They then started to attack say our business is low and we are Jewish so you need to understand that we are doing it for business I mean what's religion got to do with it... then a young man came screaming one of the works said GETTTT OUUUTTT Maybe because we was wearing scarves they attacked us

Do not come here. This place is absolutely horrible. We were served extremely oily and greasy cod and chips and very overpriced. There was no lemon and extra charges for tartar sauce which they did not inform until after purchase in an extremely rude manner. Go to the place next door instead !

Extremely disappointed. Ordered about nearly £100 worth of food but 1 staffs attitude was despicable. Just because I had a drink of my own she flipped and said I cant drink or eat anything not bought from within the shop. when I asked her to take the drink way she said to hide under the table. Then when into an argument. Absolutely atrocious. Never experienced this in my life.

I ate there with my family. We have all been victims of food poisoning. We had a terrible time. Vomiting diarrhea and fever. The owner denied. Totally unprofessional. Absolutely avoid.

Food was disgusting. Greasy batter on fish & chips was dry & crusty. Fish wasn't fresh & Savaloy looked like old meat. I will never eat there again. People should be able to cook before being aloud to open a restaurant. I would not recommend eating here

Walked in, sat down and walked out again. The place was so dirty and grimy, lady near the middle of the "restaurant " had a dirty looking trolley she was scraping plates and wiping her nose on back of her hand . The place is stuck in the 70s, and had a proper contaminated vibe so we left. I've seen some ok reviews on here but I didn't want to stay and spend money when I could see how dirty it was.

Only pleasant experience of being in Margate was this place. Unfortunately I'd have to return to the veritable cesspool that is Margate, with the toothless simpleton abusive locals. To come here again so unfortunately, we won't be back

Really drab and basic decor food pretty basic

Great cafe, good value for money. Really tasty home cooked food. Cooked to order. I had a Full English Breakfast which you can have all day, you don't have to have it in the morning. Tea was lovely a great mug really cheap. The atmosphere was was really friendly and staff were really helpful. Order and pay as you go in and then your meal is brought to your table. You don't have to wait long. Would definitely recommend it to anyone and would definitely go back.

If you want great Fish and Chips, DON'T go here!! Mind you on a beautiful winter's day in February, in Margate, there wasn't a lot to choose from to dine in. The Beano Cafe looks like something from the 70s, and looks like it hasn't had a makeover since then. It's very sad and grimy. But we had to give it a chance but wished we hadn't. After reading some reviews off TripAdvisor, which a lot were not good, we decided to give it our opinion. The presentation was good, and that was the one star. It was bland, even salt, vinegar, and not proper heinz ketchup could give it any taste. The batter was soggy, and the mushy peas looked more yellow than green. The " americano " I had was right out of the jar, and my wife got a can of coke with no glass. Yes I could've asked for one but thought it would be safer out of the can. And no we couldn't find anywhere else as the place we were recommended was under refurbishment, and one other place we found was full.

Had cod & chips, really the worst eaten in the area, plus extremely over priced. Batter soggy and slimy fish skin left on the fish, few chips, which were undercooked. Also had saveloys, lukewarm, expensive and even the dogs turned up their noses at them.

We were looking for a nice breakfast/lunch whilst visiting Margate and came across this place. My partner ordered a veggie breakfast with scrambled eggs (and received a fried egg) but still, she says was delicious and fresh. I stole a couple of her mushrooms and they were lovely. I ordered Scampi and Chips with mushy peas and it was piping hot and fresh i loved it. The chips were so fresh and you can tell were cooked in clean oil. The cutlery was clean too. We fancied a drink after and only had card but they had a £5 card limit unfortunately so no drink for us.

Have been here many times for breakfast when visiting Margate, this time we had fish and chips and it was just as nice as the breakfasts. It was plentiful. The cod was huge and perfectly cooked as were the chips. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Terrible place. I found plastic in my food. When I complained, the owner ignored me and would not offer a refund. I have reported them to the Health Inspector.

Very rude! The pies were stale. They charged 50p per carrier bag!!!! Thieves, I'd sooner eat sand than go back. Kmt
