Beautiful eatery with outstanding views. Great family run restaurant. No bookings, just queue up, dog friendly, simple food - crab salad, pint of prawns, sandwiches but very well done. We had crab salad and a pint of prawns between us with a cold bottle of rose and followed by ice cream. Highly recommend all. Very friendly staff. Can offer GF bread. Fantastic views of steephill cove. Ate here twice in a 3 day visit to the island.

Aside from the most perfect location on the sea, making you feel like you’re in Greece on a sunny day, the staff and the food at this lovely place are exceptional. Simply done food, executed well - crab sandwiches where you can taste the crab as it isn’t covered in sauces and spices. Good drinks selection. The most lovely service. We had a fantastic and memorable lunch from 12-87 years old and all our requests were kindly dealt with. Thank you!

Arrived for a drink after walking along the coast path and apart from a warm welcome the first thing done was brought out a bowl of water for our little dog. We didn’t ask it was just part of the great service here. Really nice staff and great views. Worth the walk alone.

Good service. Tasty food. Nice setting and genuinely pleasant. The food isn’t Michelin starred but not aimed to be. Had a very tasty tuna baguette and fresh crisps. Lovely little walk to get down to this tiny beach with is highly recommended. Staff friendly. Not expensive and lovely with the water smashing into the rocks so close by.

Excellent location in Steephill Cove, literally right on the Seafront, lovely spot to have a lunch. Sandwiches were good, generous fillings. Perhaps a bit on the pricey side but worth for the location. Alcohol is available for those that want it, service was good.

What a picture perfect location for a cafe/bistro. You are practically on the beach here with the e most amazing views. Not many tables & chairs, luckily we managed to get a seafront view one on this beautiful sunny April Thursday. We shared prawn sandwich with a couple of drinks & spent a delightful 40mins or so. The sandwich was delicious & packed full. Yes, as others have said it is on the pricey side, but sometimes the location & food is worth it 😋

This beachside cafe is in a lovely spot, Steephill Cove, which is tucked away at the bottom of the cliffs near Ventnor. It’s a great place for a walk by the sea, and it’s deservedly popular among visitors. The speciality is the crab sandwich, which is perfectly OK (fresh crab between two slices of ordinary sliced bread, and with a few crisps and salad leaves) but ridiculously overpriced at £16.75 a pop. The service is brisk and efficient. A nice place to visit, but three of us paid £50 overall for a crab sandwich each, and that felt like too much.

This place is situated at Steep Hill Cove below Ventnor. As the name suggests there is a very steep hill down to the cove but it’s certainly worth a look. The small cove is picturesque and quaint with weather beaten structures and beach paraphernalia. The shack was the only sign of any life when we arrived in pouring rain. We ordered a crab sandwich and a crab soup. Both were delicious and freshly prepared. Yes the prices aren’t cheap but bear in mind they have to haul all of their supplies down to the beach and you’re enjoying a meal sat in the midst of outstanding sea views on a quiet English coastal shore. Thanks to the team who were very friendly and served us well!

Seems like a average cafe on approach but the setting is stunning especially on a summers day over looking the Sea. However…. When I ordered the Fresh Crab sandwich for £15!!! I was expecting something out of this world. Don’t get me wrong the crab and the bread were lovely, but that was it, - it was accompanied with half a bag of plain crisps and a few leaves. Felt very ripped off. I wouldn’t really recommend if I am honest, as the prices don’t reflect the experience. Steep hill cove is lovely, but there isn’t really a lot of choice for eating apart from here or 2 other small eating places. Shame as could be a real winner.

Absolutely the best place to get a crab sandwich on the Island by far which you can accompany with a pint of Fuggle. Always worth the walk down and we visit whenever back on the Island. So dog friendly with a gravy bone and bowl of water for our dog every time who also loves the Beach Shack and usually goes to sleep under the table....something he infrequently does. I struggle to recognise the adverse reviews of the owner on Trip Advisor as I’ve seen the challenges he has getting people to adhere to the good measures he has put in place to keep all of his patrons Covid safe and read the clear and simple signage such as queue here....I totally understand why he needs to be frank with somepeople who don’t appear to be able to follow simple instructions and clear signage ! My wife and I visited The Botanical Gardens near Ventnor a couple of weeks ago. Locals had recommended walking down the steep hill near the gardens to the bottom. This is Steephill Cove - aptly named. We decided to have a light lunch in The Beach Shack. A good choice. There ws a reasonable choice of cooked meals and light lunch and it was priced fairly. This establishment has a beautiful setting, especially on days when the sun is shining! We were really looking forward to having lunch here today having walked from Ventnor for it, but left disappointed by our experience. We ordered 1/2 pint of prawns and a gammon ham and mustard baguette. The prawns were perfectly OK, but the plain presentation could've been helped with a touch of salad garnish. We paid extra to have a baguette rather than a sandwich and then to add cheese and onion. Fair enough, but what we were presented with for £8.10 was overpriced. The baguette was nice enough but.. tiny! While we also understand that it must be difficult operating in a pandemic, the man in charge was clearly frustrated by his staff who he thought should be elsewhere and we were in ear shot of him telling them so near the clearing station which felt uncomfortable. Won't be rushing back :-(

For me there is nothing more enjoyable on a holiday trip near the coast than a good crab sandwich. Our b&b; host recommended the Beach Shack and the recommendation was well founded. Steephill Cove is a charming little spot on the coastal footpath and a stone's throw from Ventnor Botanic gardens. It's a simple beach café with a verandah. My crab sandwich on granary served with a few crisps came in at £9, but it was well filled and delicious and savoured while enjoying the sea view. The chap running it was also very affable and on the ball and made for a delightful visit. You need to be able to manage the slope or steps to get there and back mind, but worth the effort for those who can.

Yes, great location and I know you have to pay for that, but £10 for a crab sandwich using supermarket sliced bread just grates on the my rip-off scale. Upgrade to a decent loaf, guys. I can't believe that will knock your bottom line that much. We were staying in the cove for 4 days and that stopped us returning but you are busy so I guess that doesn't bother you. Out of all the 6 places we "researched" for lunchtime crab sandwiches, this was the best. Even though, according to the fishermen themselves, crab is out of season in early May, it tasted absolutely delicious here in sandwiches of the freshest bread. Add to that an open-air table with comfortable chairs literally right next to the sea and large glasses of chilled wine to accompany the seafood, and you have the recipe for complete holiday happiness.

My wife and I visited this cafe together with our two dogs in late April on an overcast day but just about warm enough to sit outside and enjoy the slightly misty view of the shipping coming and going to Portsmouth and the Solent.

The loveliest café and the warmest welcome. This has been our "go to" café on Steephill Cove for many years and it never disappoints. The best bread pudding on the Island and the most delicious salads. Open from early in the season until late autumn, the magic of Steephill Cove always brings us back, but so does the café.

My wife and I stumbled on this wonderful place on a off-the-beaten-track whilst waling along the coast. We sat at a table on the veranda overlooking the beautiful little bay. Being the summer school holidays and good weather the place was very busy. The menu isn’t extensive but what you get is always fresh and very well presented. Lots of crab, prawns, burgers, sandwiches, salads, breakfasts and drinks.

We enjoyed a walk from Ventnor town to Steephill Cove and, lo and behold, before us was The Beach Shack. It was here that we chose a dryish corner to watch the tide come in and turn as we relished Thai Crab noodle Soup and delectable Crab Toasties, followed by Lavazza coffee and delicious carrot cake...It seemed appropriate to sit being occasionally sprayed by the sea whilst eating its inhabitants on this unseasonably warm November afternoon. The staff were very pleasant too and we will definitely revisit this pearl!

Often found here after a nice summers walk from bonchurch to ventnor then onto Steephill, where you can sample the best Thai crab noodle soup ever followed by a nice cold beer or something more suitable for the kids, all the food is excellent and the view is excellent on a summers day or even on a windy day !, all in all a hidden gem and a must.

Great friendly family run cafe on beautiful Steephill Cove. All the staff are super helpful. Good crab sandwiches and coffee to eat in or go. My daughter is a sucker for their chicken soup. Lovely to place to sit whether in the baking hot sun or blustery autumn day. Very welcoming to dogs too.

My partner and I have visited this wonderful off-the-beaten-track cove which is true to its location’s name and have enjoyed lots of super food here. Today it was the prawn cocktail salad with crusty bread - delicious and freshly prepared. We sat at a table on the veranda overlooking the beautiful little bay with its rock pools. Being half term there were a few families there also taking advantage of the exceptional weather and the great food. The menu isn’t extensive but what you get is always fresh and very well presented. Lots of crab, prawns, burgers, sandwiches, salads, breakfasts and drinks.

We did the coastal walk to Ventnor starting off at the Beach Shack with a coffee stating that we would be back for lunch. However when we returned the place was heaving and there was no seating available. We did return the following day after lunch, for a couple of cappuccinos while we waited for some amazing prawn baguettes. Well worth visiting, but beware the timing.

We have been to this outdoor cafe several times over the years. Perfect for a light bite or drinks sat overlooking the sea. I particularly like their gluten free scones, my husband had a normal one, both served warm with clotted cream and jam.

We visited the Beach Shack in Steephill Cove twice during our latest visit to the island, once on an ‘out and back’ trip from Ventnor via the coastal path and once when coming down from the Botanical Gardens whilst visiting there.

Stopped for a cream tea which the wife enjoyed. Usual 2 scones provided with jam and clotted cream and a good pot of tea. They normally do Gluten Free cream tea but due to high demand had sold out of GF scones. They were however able to supply GF cheese scones so I had a savoury version of cream tea, 2 GF cheese scones, a tomato chutney and a cream cheese. Was very nice and would recommend.

A very peaceful place to stay, in the centre of Newport, conveniently located, close to the bus station and to restaurants. Charming interiors, with a lot of character. Spacious, comfortable and clean room. Breakfast is served, and freshly prepared after the order is made. Hostess is friendly and Staff polite. We will definitely stay there again!

Stopped here for tea and we're so glad we did. Loose leaf tea in a china tea pot (not one of those awful stainless steel ones that dribbles all over the table), a tea strainer, china cups and saucers and a china milk jug - this is how tea should be served. The Bakewell slice and chocolate cake were both delicious and the portions very generous. The friendly welcome and engaging staff added to the enjoyment. Looking forward to the next visit.
