Have had a couple of Sunday lunches at the Bay View and I have to say both have been really good, a three course dinner, very good food with excellent service throughout, thanks to Brett for great service, a clear favourite with the regulars. I would recommend and will be back.

We booked well in advance and asked for a table for 2 by the window on a Tuesday evening. When we arrived, the manager said such a table was not available and was not the least bit apologetic. A bottle of water was on our table but none of the waiters offered to pour a glass for us. As for the food, the starters of smoke salmon and mussels were not served with bread. The main courses were fine. However when it came to the desserts the choice was very limited and so declined. Didn't ask if we would like a coffee etc. Basically overpriced and in our view the manageress should brush up on her hospitality skills. Sum up...not impressed and for the money probably one of the most dissapointing dining experiences

We ate breakfast and dinner here on several occasions while staying in the hotel. The breakfast was awesome. Back to a full pre-covid buffet with a wide selection of cooked items including tasty Cornish hogs pudding and fried bread - a very rare find these days. Service was great too. In the evening the food was good but the menu could have had more changes from day to day. My one gripe was that there was a culture of trying to rush you through your meal. No time between arriving and ordering then each course hot on the heels of the last. Counter this by holding off ordering until some drinks have arrived and specifying how long you want between courses.

What can I say? I love this hotel and was lucky enough to live opposite for some years. We stopped for lunch yesterday and the food and the service were as impeccable as ever. We both had the burgers, and they were stunningly tasty.. we had been to a famous restaurant in Padstein the day previous, but I have to say that the flavour of those burgers far surpassed the food there! Beautiful afternoon sitting on the terrace, eating, drinking and generally soaking up the ambience of a beautiful hotel. The staff were friendly and efficient and a total credit to the owners. Hopefully, next time we can stay there.

We booked a table here a couple of weeks before dining here last week and had requested a window table but we were informed that these are usually allocated to hotel guests. We arrived to find an impressive facade and even more impressive interior. We were led to a table which wasn't by the window however, we did have views out to the bay. We chose to eat from the à la carte menu-my husband chose prawn cocktail (reliving the 80s) followed by ribeye steak.I opted for smoked salmon with capers and chicken breast with dauphinoise potatoes. The amuse bouche served beforehand was so tasty we both would have liked it as a starter-larger portion of course. The female waitress, originally from Spain, was very friendly and efficient. We loved the ambience in the room and had a lovely meal on the whole. However, my husband's prawn cocktail was served 80's style in a glass dish with a profusive mountain of lettuce and very little Marie Rose sauce and unfortunately he had to search for the elusive prawns which were miniscule and very few in number.Yet I was given a very generous portion of smoked salmon!! Come on Carlyon Bay you are charging fine dining prices! We finished off with coffees in the bar which was cosy and comfortable- again with bay views. So, apart from my husband's starter, everything else was spot-on and we would eat here again when holidaying in Cornwall but we would steer clear of the prawn cocktail hence the 4 circles not 5.

the menu offers fine dining a la carte and on a fixed 3 course menu. I agree with other reviews that diners should be greeted with the offer of an aperitif. I found it odd to have to request a drink to start my meal off in a ‘formal’ dining restaurant. The amuse bouche of tomato soup was divine and started the meal off well. I chose the bourbon marinated salmon which was delicious though i would have liked more ginger in the ginger cream. Perfect presentation. The guinea fowl wrapped in bacon was perfectly cooked, but i discovered that guinea fowl breast does not taste of much! The side dish of vegetables were also cooked to prrfection, hot and just the right quantity. The 3 Cornish cheeses were a good selection, of good size with crunchy thin biscuits. A lovely meal. Probably one of the best meals we have enjoyed in an English hotel restaurant.

Staying at the carlyon, this is the main restaurant. I'd say it is average at best. The food was good but nothing to shout about, but what stood out the most was the atmosphere or lack of. It was vacant of any sort of atmosphere and whilst the staff was prompt, they lacked any sort of personality which is important when creating atmosphere in a restaurant, there was also no background music, so even when the tables starting filling it seems quiet and odd.

We had 3 course Sunday lunch with coffee for £22 and thought it was lovely. The staff were attentive and showed elegance in serving. The kitchen is geared up for a busy lunch and everything was beautifully presented, hot and tasty. The lady at the next table didn’t like some her meal and was immediately offered a replacement with any fuss. Great opportunity to dress up a little and had a really pleasant time. Looking forward to going back.

On arrival we didn’t seem to be on the list although booked for my husbands birthday a few days before by phone. The table was a little crowded, against the wall with no Bay View, chairs too wide so table legs in the way. After being seated we were asked for a food order within minutes before ordering drinks. We all had 3 courses, drinks and wine. The food was not what I would consider fine dining, 2 starters were quite small and 2 were quite large. My husband and son in law had different steaks. The filet was tiny and over cooked, Ribeye was under cooked to what was requested and had to be sent back. Monk fish curry was tasty but quite liquid. Overall a disappointing experience, company fortunately was excellent. We won’t be returning.

We were staying with some friends in the Carlyon Bay hotel for a couple of nights and both evenings we had dinner in the hotel's Bay View Restaurant. For such a nice hotel the restaurant on both evenings was a huge disappointment. It was not just the food but also the service. We ordered from the set menu which always sounded better than the food turned out to be. There were 4 or 5 choices for starter, main course and dessert. The food was variable - on one evening my wife's chicken was overcooked, dried out and tough so she left most of it and none of the staff paid any attention when she commented on this. However my lamb shank was beautifully cooked. One of our friends ordered the cod for a starter which turned out to be a huge piece of cod (poorly cooked) with some sauce - far more suited for a main course than a starter. Other than the fruit salad, ice cream and cheese all the other desserts appeared to have been bought in and were generally tasteless. However we all agreed that overall the food was poor. The serving staff were enthusiastic but at times this was too much particularly when on numerous occasions there were trying to clear plates away when the guest was still eating. Sometimes when there are a group of people, as in our case, you want to have a relaxing dinner. The service never allowed you to do that. Even when we told the staff to slow down this was ignored and on both evenings we were finished our meals in just over an hour which was totally not what we wanted. On two occasions when the servers were clearing away the plates they hit our hosts on the shoulders with the dirty plates. I appreciate that this is the beginning of the summer season and it appeared to us that a lot of the staff were new but that is no excuse for poor food and poor service. If we ever visit the hotel again, and it is a lovely hotel, we will definitely find somewhere else to have dinner

been here for sunday lunch a few times, and the food is variable, some weeks much better than others. would be nice if the menu changed a little more, as it is the same virtually every week. the vegetables that accompany the main course are poor quality- I would rather pay more to get better and fresher veg.Trying to get service for wine in the restaurant is hard, everytime we go we have the same issue, only one person can take the wine order and he is slow and doesn't listen to what you are saying, we would probably have a second round if it wasn't so painful! but the restaurant staff and the bar staff are friendly and the actual venue is lovely with great views. the clientele is upper ages so we always feel very young here but overall its a good value sunday lunch with a view.

As this is a restaurant based in a hotel, I'm not sure how good value the a la carte menu would be for non residents. However, for us, as guests on an inclusive deal, the food was out of this world. Ample choice each evening, with excellent local shellfish and meat, and something for everyone. My favourite dish was the sea bream with crab bisque and Cornish crab as a main; best starter was the cauliflower mousse with piccallili. Some of the comments about service (or lack of it) mystify me as we couldnt recommend our waiting staff highly enough.

Dined in the restaurant one evening with another couple. Had an apperitiff in the lounge bar , complimentary and enjoyable canapé were served, unfortunately the dinner was disappointing the preparation and quality of the dishes was not up to the standard and did not warrant the cost. Given other reviews it is possibly it was the head chef's night off, but it really does not excuse over cooked risotto and lamb. There are, in my view, better restaurants nearby.

This is a nice hotel restaurant with a lovely view over the Bay. The food is absolutely fabulous but it is pricey. We chose the Table d'Hote menu but no price was given and it was a bit of a nasty shock when the bill came. Some of the staff were extremely good and friendly but the service was 'out of sync' when we arrived with food arriving before we'd even had an aperitif, let alone chosen the wine. Also we were served the wrong dessert and dessert wine with no apology from the waitress concerned who did not seem bothered. I would probably try the Taste brasserie if I was in the area again as it would probably be the same chef but with a lesser price tag!

My Future Wife and I dined at the Bay each night during our three night stay at the Carlyon Hotel and not once were we disappointed.Stand out starters include the Smoked Salmon, and FW enjoyed the garlicky wild mushrooms on toasted sourdough. From the selection of mains we had, the Cornish fillet steak was outstanding, as was the Thai Monkfish curry and the pork. There's an extensive wine list, with something for everybody from old world classics to local Cornish wines from which I highly recommend the Camel Valley Bacchus, whilst FW greatly enjoyed the Knightor Mena Hweg. Service was outstanding with friendly, helpful and attentive staff. I recommend bagging a window seat if possible: The view is outstanding, and we were thankfully blessed with clear days. We visited this hotel back in June and were highly recommended to try the restaurant. We had a very disappointing meal which consisted of a £9 bowl of what can only be described as Heinz Tomato soup for my son who had ordered off the children's menu but was expecting something home-made, as we were, too. My son, who is an expert on Heinz tomato soup as it happens to be an old favourite of his, couldn't believe his eyes when served a bowl of this brought to the table with all the pomp and circumstance usually associated with a plate of caviar! My husband and I ordered a bowl of mushroom soup, which, when it came, not only looked and smelt like, but also tasted of a packet asparagus soup. There was no hint of mushroom in this soup; however, there were suspicious little morsels of mushy asparagus instead. i questioned the friendly maitre d' a couple of times, in case they made an error with the soup of the day. However, he assured me after "speaking to the chef" that this was most certainly mushroom soup! I can only assume that there was a language barrier which affected the chef's knowledge of vegetables in English and that the chef as well as the majority of waiting staff had English as their 2nd language. I ordered salmon as my main course which was completely lacking in flavour and moisture. A very dull piece of fish which was a real let-down. There were no vegetarian and gluten-free options for dessert other than a bowl of strawberries, which, again, for a restaurant/hotel of this calibre is pretty poor show, and demonstrates no effort or creativity on the part of the chef. The setting was gorgeous but the quality of the food really let it down. Certainly won't go out of my way to rush back here.

I think this venue gets overlooked as a great place to eat as its part of a hotel complex. However if you want a traditional Sunday lunch in style this place is hard to beat in the local area. The food and service is excellent. Not the cheapest but under £20 a head (excl wine). The views are excellent even on a less than bright day. The food is good but nothing fancy - hence my traditional comment. I can see the venue and food would suit slightly older diners and obviously a number of people were Sunday regulars. However I did not think that made a difference to the overall experience.

This restaurant is situated in the Carlyon Bay Hotel in St Austell where I recently returned from after a break of one week. The restaurant is open to non-residents as well as paying guests. If you choose bed, breakfast and evening meal as we did - to eat there is included in the price. For bed and breakfast only or non-residents the cost was £38 for 3-course menu. The portions are not huge but satisfying and there are lots of choices. I noticed that a vegetarian menu was available, but I did not see it. The menu starts with a little taster served in an expresso cup, e.g. pumpkin soup or a little cheese doughnut. You are not obliged to have this, of course if you just want to try, why not, but everyday was different, then you start the menu, starter, mains and desserts, normally four choices in each. The vegetable accompaniements are served in little bowls and everyone gets 2, one of veg and one of potatoes, plenty to eat but obviously only if you like that particular vegetable. The service is first-class and tap water is offered if wanted. We had slightly carbonated Cornish water in a bottle which was delicious. Wines/champagne are extra of course. Coffee for residents is served in the lounge after dinner. We never went hungry.
