2 margs, 5 smallish tacos, and some chips and guacamole was $70. All was tasty, but that’s a high price for what you get. Also, the “Are you ok with tipping us?” was a bit awkward and uncomfortable if you want to say no.

Went here with my mum for lunch and 5/5. The food was excellent, service incredible and great atmosphere i highly recommend. Thank you again

Such a great place to meet friends and have fab margaritas with queso, guacamole and chips or more if you fancy it. The team are so lovely and always welcoming, if you haven’t been you’re missing out.

First time visiting for dinner on a Friday night. Was very busy - table not great as right in the centre of room which would be better suited for just drinks but had enough room to eat at. Margaritas were lovely and service great. Went for the famous guacamole at the table which was the best guacamole I have ever had. Drunken beans was also a winner. Then shared 3 tacos - all delicious and enough. Will definitely be back.

We had a lovely evening eating at The Basement. Great cocktails and yummy food. Staff were attentive, we would struggling to fault the service. Aim to be back to try other things on the menu.

Best Mexican in Edinburgh and icing on the cake is staff members. Very attentive it not intrusive. Guacamole was the highlight of the evening as they prepared fresh in front of us.

The service wasn’t great. Asked to be seated early (came in at 5..20) and booking was for 6. Whilst the restaurant allowed this we were told we wouldn’t be allowed to order for a while. Bear in mind the restaurant was pretty quiet at this time (id say there was 3 other tables). We were not asked about drinks for 15-20 mins- long wait but ok. Drinks took a bit of time (all of them were soda and lime- no alcohol). We then were left for another 30 mins before we could order (this was after the fact we had to request to order and was quite shortly told ‘in a minute’). Food then did not come out for another 30-35 minutes and all came out at separate times, none of us had ordered starters so it was all mains. The food itself was lovely but the service wasn’t great. This is a shame as I have been before and it was my recommendation that we went here. Remembering both times I had been previous, service wasn’t great but the food made up for it. This time unfortunately I couldn’t condone the wait time and delay. I don’t think I’ll be back and I know my dinner party were also not pleased.

Lovely staff very welcoming, it national margarita 🍹 day so had a couple hawaiian one was delicious , massive starter of nachos and chilli and chicken enchiladas were delicious so was the naughty churros very tasty , great night ,we will be back

Far too noisy. Wanted to sit in the dinning room but not an option. Enchiladas I didn’t enjoy. Claggy corn tortillas. Disgusting. Staff over familiar. The whole experience was awful. Won’t be back

It was my partner & I 1st time at The Basement & we will definitely be returning.The only small,small quibble would be the size of the table it felt a bit small once our dishes,condiments ,drinks etc all arrived!

As a lover of Mexican food - and tequila - we thought we’d try this restaurant as it was also near to our hotel. So glad we did - great, friendly service with tasty food that was fresh and vibrant. Same could be said for the cocktails, mine had dragonfruit sorbet and was delicious. Great vibe to the place too, we will definitely back 😊

Another excellent visit to the Basement, the food was nothing short of spectacular and we had the most delicious non-alcoholic margarita. A must visit for anyone in or near Edinburgh.

One of the best restaurants in Edinburgh, I cannot recommend birria tacos enough. my partner got the prawn (or shrimp I can’t remember) tacos which I had a bite of and they were packed with flavour. We also ordered a rump steak to share between us and the quality of meat was excellent and cooked to perfection. Overall, it still stands as one of my favourite restaurants, the staff are lovely and the service was quick, even though we went on a weekend. The meal cost us around £90 and that was with three main courses and drinks with a tip. The quality of food for the price you pay is exceptional.

Food took an hour to come and found mine was quite burnt and unenjoyable. No one served us for over 15 minutes just for drinks and then another 15 for food.

Was here on Saturday for lunch as it had been recommended to us. The service was dreadful and food was ok. When we said we wanted the bill as weren’t waiting any longer for deserts or more drinks the waitress became quite defensive saying they were short staffed, which I completely understand but had she told us this at the beginning we would of been more understanding. The manager then came over with 4 shots as an apology which wasn’t really what we wanted. It’s a shame as seemed a great place.

The Basement is ALWAYS good. Mexican themed bar and food. Caters well for dietary restrictions. It's great to be served by staff who have a bit of personality. We were looked after really well by Pablo on this visit. Thanks - we'll be back soon for more margaritas.

Fab blast from the past. Sadly it’s been 25 plus years since I’ve been in this gem of a restaurant. Why did I leave it so long? Delicious fresh tasty food. The guacamole at the table was so creamy and zingy and I immediately regretted saying I’d share! The frozen margaritas were beautifully mixed and definitely had a good tequila hit. The staff were super friendly despite being rush off their feet. Oh and it’s absolutely essential you have the churros! They were perfectly crisp, sweet and moreish!

I do love The Basement. We always have a great time. However, I was slightly disappointed with our table. I had booked 48 hours previously, and we were still situated next to the entrance! Other than that, it was a very good evening.

Really nice and friendly staff, they improve the experience of dining in a casual and lively place. The food is good and particularly the nachos and Baja fish tacos. Worth a try

Well , where to start? Starter was ok, there so called cheese on the nacho's was a bit of more like vegan cheese, but hay ho, edible . Main meal, chicken enchiladas. Was so looking forward to my meal there as its been 2 years since my las visit and loved it, what a disappointment, the chicken was dry and tasteless basically no sauce or flavour, they managed to somehow make the tortilla supper dry, hard ,saggy and and obviously stale in parts. I mean, I suppose it takes a talent to make it inedible. Very disappointed. Handed meal back and never had to pay at least, not a great night out. Wont be back

The food was delicious - we got a variety of tacos and some spicy chicken wings. We just wished there was an extra taco on the pork dish! Lovely vibe and helpful waiters.

Had a fab dinner here, our waiter in particular made it so much fun, didn’t get her name but she is Lithuanian - amazing service and made sure we had a great time!

Unfortunately the “drunken beans” were unavailable (even at 18:30!) which ruled out several starter and main dishes for the veggie. Service was slower than average, seemed to push extra drinks at every opportunity and generally slow at delivering them in any case. The enchiladas were lukewarm which is a pretty difficult task considering they have to be grilled after all the contents are cooked. Dessert was good though - churros were decent and hot. Big shame that a good chunk of the menu was not available, along with the slow service and lukewarm food. Not great considering the price and automatic 10% service charge. Can’t recommend based on this visit I’m afraid.

We really enjoyed our meal at the Basement. The food and service was excellent. I was planning to order the Nopales Fajitas but was told the kitchen struggle if too mamy people order these at the same time & advised to have something else. The Quesidellias were tasty but feel that if a dish is on the menu you should be able to choose it.

Really enjoyed our time at the Basement, the only thing we found is that a few items on their menu weren't available at the time - and since their menu was quite small that was a bit limiting. However, we still both found a dish we loved, and would definitely go back for seconds!

My favourite Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh. So many gluten free options for anyone who is celiac like me. The birria tacos are to die for and all of the staff are lovely. Even the churros are gluten free. 10/10 recommend.

A few essentials were missing from the menu like some of the chicken dishes but the bar man/waiter was really lovely and friendly, couldn't do enough for us. We enjoyed our meal.

A weekend in Edinburgh for a show with my bestie. We always like to try somewhere new to eat before the show. The Basement was a nice surprise with lovely decor, fantastic food, amazing cocktails and wonderful staff. Will definitely be back when in Edinburgh.

Wow! The Guacamole was the best I have ever tasted in my life. They make it right in front of you too. Highly recommend it along with both the fish and steak tacos. Both delicious. The place is nicely decorated and the staff extremely friendly.

Lovely restaurant, staff friendly and attentive. Food was flavoursome and plenty. The only slight issue was the temperature in the area we were sitting which was a little chilly.

Big man, big stomach, little food. Left still hungry. Let me start by saying- I had tacos and they were delicious. Most importantly though, would I come back again? Probably not before trying other Mexicans in edinburgh. The problem being its overpriced and not enough of it. Mexican food is cheap to make and that should be reflected. Tacos that come out and it should be £6 cost between 8 and 14. Food was excellent and the staff were lovely, but if you have a big appetite, you might be better somewhere else.

Best Mexican food in Europe, if you have a craving for flavour and crunch it will be met here. Definitely don’t skip The Basement, it’s legit and the drinks are divine.

Food was really good, limited options but they do a variety of Mexican style food. Cocktails are delicious (including non alcoholic ones). Will definitely be going back for food and drinks. Members of staff we really friendly and helpful, made you feel welcome and checked in various times to make sure everything was okay.

The food was incredible. Was very pleasantly surprised. The service however was very slow. We were sat around 7:50 and finished mains around 9:15, so when we wanted to order desert they said the kitchen was closed - unless we pre ordered dessert there was thus no way to fit in 3 courses because of the delays in the food. What a shame as we really wanted to try the churros. Regardless, the staff were lovely and helpful and the ambiance was great. Food was decently priced, perhaps a bit on the spenny side. Cocktails were great. Absolutely worth a visit.

This is a great place. We absolutely loved the food, the nachos starter, the Burritos and the Churros we had. The decor and music were great too but above all was the fantastic service. Very attentive, very helpful, very friendly and very cheeky! Just as it should be. 10 stars out of 5. Will definitely be back.

Birria Beef Tacos - unbelievable!!! Finally got to try these last night and I can’t stop thinking about them. Such a lovely place with good vibes and good food & drink! Highly recommend.

Had the steak fajitas which were excellent, the steak quality was better than I thought it would be. Good service and very enjoyable meal

Fajitas were a bit rubbery, the coffee was very tepid, they hadn’t even boiled the water, the sauce with the vegetables in the vegetable fajitas was far too salty. However, the staff were very helpful & friendly, the cocktails were nice & the general atmosphere fun. I’ve been before & the food was excellent so perhaps on this occasion it was just down to what staff were in the kitchen as the food was pretty disappointing this time.
