Had a strange experience in here. We arrived just before midday on a Saturday. There were lots of staff in the cafe (more staff than customers). Two others at a nearby table were getting lavish service. But all the staff ignored us. After about 10 minutes I checked at the front counter in the shop to make sure we were sitting in the right place. I was assured that we were and was led back to the same table. We continued to wait. Staff gathered together at the till near our table and talked about things. After another 5 minutes of waiting to be served, we left. I wonder what the problem was? We would have had lunch there had we been served 🥲

Easter Sunday roast with friends. We were contacted in advance of our booking, to make our choice of meat. Lady who called was friendly and professional. Food came out quickly on the day, as was effectively 'pre-ordered' - the roast was lovely (we had venison,) good selection of vegetables and sides and generous portions. Love the rustic, family, sharing style, we were fortunate enough to be on a large table with plenty of space to spread out. Nice wine list. Will definitely be back. Only thing to watch out for is the pricing on the menu vs. the bill received. Firstly they hadn't taken our deposit off of the total, but this was quickly sorted. Then we noticed the wine we ordered (more than 1 bottle) was charged at £2 more per bottle than advertised on the menu - same for the roasts, all charged £1 more than listed. Whilst this didn't detract from the meal, it's a little thing to watch out for, as the staff didn't know how to rectify the pricing on the system, so we just paid it so as not to make an issue / scene.

This is the first Google review I’ve ever given so that speaks for itself. Probably should have realised it would be bad when we were the only customers seated on Good Friday…if you want to spend £15 on a horrendous bacon and sausage sandwich this is the place to go. Atmosphere was like being in an antic shop tucked out the back. Staff were friendly and accommodating but the prices for the food given are the worst I’ve ever experienced.

Un lugar peculiar. Saludo cordial. Buen personal.

I had lunch here with friends, one of whom chose this venue. I have been a few times beforehand and never rated it very highly.but it was her choice. We each found the food mediocre and overpriced and we did not enjoy drinking wine out of very thick glasses. I would not be writing this had we not been shocked by the 121/2% tip automatically added to the bill. This is a cafe not fine dining and did not merit this level of tip. We agreed not to question it but will not be returning. There are so many other venues one can choose in Chichester. Indeed a friend invited me to the Kennels shortly afterwards and a similar lunch was actually a bit cheaper - with wine served in an appropriate wine glass.

Having enjoyed The Barn for lunch we were looking forward to trying the new wine bar. First impressions were positive. Warm, comfortable atmosphere and we were made very welcome. The service was reasonable, but felt a bit amateurish. The menu selection was exciting and we enjoyed the variety of food. However, the massive disappointment was the wine list. Whilst the cheapest bottle was a delicious Pinot Noir, it cost £40! Outrageous! So, despite the many good points about Emma's new venture, we will not be returning. Get real.

This place is one of the most pretentious cafes I’ve ever been in. It takes egg on toast to another level… or thinks it does. The amount of flowery waffle and nonsense written about this place would make you believe Emma, the owner, is the wife of Marco Pierre White, however reading a few more reviews and it seems along with unpaid piano tuners there are several more dissatisfied customers that can see through all the drivel she babbles about it. The prices are exorbitant and the quality is utterly mediocre. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place it’ll leave you reeling for days

the cafe is good with a nice selection of bits to chose from. However the restaurant is a bit of a hit and miss nightmare, Food (when it arrived) was ok, just ok. Portions Huge! My biggest gripe was the older waitress lady running around like a headless chicken bossing customers about and just being a general nightmare, she even said we couldn't turn on the heat lamps in one of the cabins because it costs too much money?? err ok ? ( i of course then proceeded to turn it on, much to her verbal annoyance hahah)

Incredibly overpriced for the quality of food. We had the avocado on toast, pancakes and kedgeree. All of which was not worth the price. The pancakes were swimming in maple syrup, avocado was brown and the kedgeree was the best out of the lot. The prices of the extras are outrageous and we had to question when £4 beans, which we didn't order, was added to the bill. The 12.5% discretionary service charge is dressed up as this amazing thing because a tiny portion supports charity but in reality, it was automatically added to the bill and the service didn't match the amount we paid. I would have rather have had the option of donating the whole amount to charity because the service and food wasn't adequate. In all, lunch for 3 people with 2 hot drinks was £60 which was not worth it.

Service slow and off hand. After 45 minutes+ of waiting for our order, I asked if we would have to wait much longer. Our food appeared a few minutes later - it had obviously been kept warm for some time. I could have used the crusts of my toastie as building blocks - hard does not come close to it! The quality of the food does not justify the cost. My daughter had scrambled eggs (£12.50) plus bacon (£5.00) plus halloumi (£4.00 for one slice) total = £21.50. On top of this is a service charge of 12.5% - for what? Final straw? Accessing the lavatory through part of the kitchen! There should be two doors between such spaces. Seems that the local Environmental Health Officer needs to pay the Barn a visit. I cannot recommend at any level.

I had a stack of pancakes with some maple syrups that would've cost £10 just itself, added berry compote for additional £3.5 and paid £15.12 including the service charge. All in all our visit was interesting, the concept of this business is admirable. The food (although expensive) was adequate, although it wouldn’t take much expertise it was without fault but still lacking. Is it worth the price? Maybe What’s not worth the price is the atmosphere, to sit in a cold building that could do with a heavy clean isn’t acceptable and whilst the service was good the staff were clearly unhappy and overhearing various staff members talking negatively about the business and its owner makes you wonder.

We’ve visited this place before when it was just around the corner next to the Little London car park, and it was lovely. But unfortunately, this time (Today) was a huge disappointment, and I felt it was important to share my experience, rather than just talk about it. From working in a Michelin-star environment in London and seeing restaurants and bars closing down left, right, and centre, I’m not someone who likes to damage the reputation of an independent establishment—but this felt necessary. I paid £15 for two sad-looking poached eggs on toast with no bacon or sides, served on cheap sourdough. The dish was so basic, it felt like it could’ve been from a supermarket rather than a café that charges that much. Then there was the £10 bacon bun—served on a plain Tesco brioche bun with three slightly overcooked streaks of bacon, and no sauce. Honestly, I’ve had better in London for half the price. The food wasn’t just overpriced, it was also poor quality. On top of that, the service was disappointing, especially considering the 12.5% service charge added to the bill. My bacon bun was practically slammed down in front of me without a word, and no one bothered to ask if I wanted sauce or anything else. The Bloody Mary was another letdown—barely any vodka in it, and it was overflowing. When I mentioned it, the bartender casually said, "Sorry, I forgot to put the vodka in," but still charged me full price. Overall, it was a truly frustrating experience, and sadly, I won’t be returning. I’ve already shared my thoughts with friends and family in Chichester, and I really hope The Barn takes this feedback seriously and improves.

I recently visited The Barn in Chichester for breakfast with some guests, and it was an amazing experience! Although this wasn’t my first visit, it was just as wonderful as before. The atmosphere is so charming, especially with its lovely garden and quirky, outrageously fun shed seating in the courtyard. It was such a unique touch and made the experience even more memorable. We all loved sitting in the shed, which added a fun and playful vibe to our meal. The food, as always, was delicious. The Barn is an ideal place for both breakfast and brunch. The service was exceptional, with a sweet waiter who made us feel right at home. The whole setting, from the china teacups to the knick-knacks in the decoration, created a wonderfully unique and cozy atmosphere. Every little detail added to the charm of the place. I ordered the Welsh Rarebit, and it did not disappoint! Rich, flavorful, and perfect for the setting. My guests were equally impressed, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I highly recommend The Barn for anyone looking for a cozy spot with great food, a fun atmosphere, and a quirky touch that you won’t find anywhere else. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

We had prebooked but found ourselves in the middle of a shared table for 3 groups of diners. We had to ask the end person to move so we could squeeze past them to sit down. The waiter arrived to take our order before we'd managed to actually settle ourselves into our seats. We asked for a few minutes but he never came back! Eventually we flagged down another passing waitress who took our order and brought some drinks. Then we waited, and waited and waited. After 30 minutes (maybe longer) we flagged down someone else and asked how long the food would be. It arrived pretty quickly after that but my poached eggs had clearly been sitting around for a while before I got them. Lots of excuses from the owner/manager(?) about how busy they were etc etc but some indication of the length of wait would have helped and reading other reviews seems to show a long wait is not unusual. Maybe fewer tables until they have enough kitchen staff to cope? We were offered a complementary free coffee but by then we felt we'd spent enough time there already and declined.

A couple of weeks ago my grandparents visited this cafe. They were told it was table service, they sat down waiting to be served which took ages to get an order taken and for it to be made. They ordered a cappuccino, latte and two cinnamon swirls. One was really greasy, hard and difficult to chew, the other was fine. The latte was fine. The cappuccino milk had been curdled by being over steamed. My gran informed the waiter and the waiter said ‘if she had reacted to that cinnamon swirl that she should have a gall bladder checked’. (Waiter was around in her late 50s) A group of young girls came over and checked she was alright and agreed that the coffee was not good! My gran agreed to pay for my grandpas coffee, they went up to the till to pay. The owner was behind the till and pointed out they were only paying for one coffee, my gran explained what had happen and she said she would flag it up at the meeting. No apology at all! Incredibly rude service.

Really lovely atmosphere and decor. It is great that they have locally sourced produce where possible. Also good friendly service. It is certainly on the higher end price wise. We came in for a lovely breakfast and had the shakshuka and added chorizo, and the poached eggs on toast with added feta, mushrooms and chorizo. We then had a coffee and an apple juice each. Adding things such as chorizo or feta to a meal does incur some additional costs to the base price of the meal. Both meals were lovely and well cooked. Combined with the service charge the final bill came to around £67. Which for two people for a breakfast is on the higher end. The quality of ingredients and food is great, plus with locally sourced produce understand the higher prices. But would we return for breakfast again? As a very rare treat maybe.

My husband & I visited yesterday for two cakes, a juice and a beer. The bill came to £25 which we found quite steep but as small business owners ourselves, we understand the overheads on a place like The Barn must be high. We don’t agree with their 12.5% service charge though. They should have asked if we were ok with it, or make it clear that it will be added. We worked it out after our visit. But the incident came when we went to pay at the front till. A member of staff came hastily from the restaurant room and said to her colleague, without looking or acknowledging us: “Table 6, sorry they walked off”. When we asked for clarification, she replied that customers who eat at the restaurant should pay at the back. We were confused as this was our 2nd visit and at the time, we paid at the front till. This lack of communication and courtesy really dampened our experience. Good customer service is at the heart of all we do in our own business. This member of staff would have no place in our team. Given the high prices and the way we were treated, we certainly won’t return. There are plenty of other tea rooms and restaurants in Chichester that value their customers more and offer good food at more reasonable prices.

Lovely atmosphere and beautiful outdoor seating. I am glad we booked in advance because we would’ve struggled to get a seat. While the prices are high, they mostly reflect the quality as the ingredients are locally sourced and fresh. My salad was very good. As a warning, the add-ons are expensive. From our experience, the prices do not reflect the quantity you get - we paid £4 for added chorizo and while it is an expensive ingredient 7 tiny pieces was underwhelming. My partner and I were searching for a decent breakfast/brunch establishment in Chichester and hoped we had found it in Barn Little. Sadly it wasn’t to be, a combination of dour looking staff, rather uninspiring surroundings (dusty and unclean) and pretty dreadful food, means the search continues. I had the Kedgeree, which was dry and grainy with a rice which gave the impression of being undercooked. I suspect it was whole grain (not advertised as such), Kedgeree for me is a light fluffy, flaky fish, curry flavoured dish, with hard boiled egg as a garnish…this had none of the characteristics of said dish. (£16 for what was a small plate is hugely steep especially when the quality is poor) My partner had the smashed avocado on sourdough toast, sadly the bread was stale and too tough for my partner to cut. I was asked to oblige, which made her feel a tad childlike in having someone cut up her food. The staff, whom I felt for did not look happy at their work, enquired as to our opinion of the food. After appraising them of my disappointment I was advised that they were waiving the service charge. Given our experience I would not have paid it anyway. We left hugely disappointed and vowing never to return, I am very fair minded and rarely write a negative comment unless deserved…sorry Barn Little but you failed miserably.

Excellent serving staff, let down by a grumpy manager. I had two delicious eggs on a slice of toast that posed a threat to the teeth. The bread had probably been good when fresh, but produced rock-hard toast. The bacon was also hard, but I couldn't complain as I'd asked for it to be well done. My friend had a glass of red wine he found undrinkable and categorized as vinegary. I tasted it and found it slightly oxidized, but suspected it had never been much good, even when the bottle was first opened. The charming waitress said she'd ask her manager about it. The manager came back to say she'd tasted the same wine and couldn't find anything wrong with it. When the bill came, we were surprised to see it contain £8 for the undrunk wine, and while paying, I commented that it would have cost them very little to omit it, and avoided giving us a poor impression. The manager knocked over a cutlery tray by one till, and after complaining at whoever left it there, proceeded to pick up the cutlery, ignoring the queue waiting to pay at the other till. My comment about being charged for undrinkable wine must have got back to the manager, because she told my friend that she'd make a refund, but said it in a way that negated the PR benefit that it could have generated. Perhaps she was just having a bad day, but I shan't take the chance of going back.

Hats off to the chef! Everyone in our party agreed that the food was delicious and plentiful. Absolutely love the decor and unique chalets which makes one feel that they have a comfy space of their own. The staff was friendly and prompt. We will definitely return.

Visiting Chichester for a mooch and looking for a place to have lunch in the sun we happily discovered 'The barn Chichester'. Staff were friendly, inviting and not overly rude like the other reviews have left.. I was very surprised to see such comments left on other reviews as everyone seemed lovely. Relaxed atmosphere with a quirky decor, we didn't book but staff were more than happy to find seating for us outside where we'd requested to be ideally. I was told recently they've updated their menu, everything seems delicious. I picked the Sourdough cheese, leek toastie with chutney on the side and my other half picked the brioche bun with egg and bacon. Really yummy and we'd happily come here again on our next visit to Chichester. The price is very reasonable and expected for an independent business, I have been to chain cafés with similar prices and less tasty food so absolutely nothing to complain about with the pricing. There was a service charge included in the bill but we were happy to pay this. Upon paying i mentioned I would leave a review as it means so much to a small businesses, I can't stress how lovely this hidden gem was to find. A cinnamon bun was also picked up to go upon leaving! Thank you very much for the experience, Katelyne x

Very underwhelmed. Sat out the back from where you hear loud staff conversation and two different music sources clash. Friendly waiter took my order straight away, and while I was waiting for it to arrive, I read that a 12.5% service charge would be added to my bill. Seems a bit ‘Ryanair’. Far better to just state the prices. Anyway, I needn’t have worried as I didn’t get to pay, sat reading for twenty minutes and my coffee and cake didn’t arrive, so went elsewhere.

Visited as were in Chichester, looked for an independent and we weren't disappointed, firstly we were served by the vivacious amazing Harriet who made our day! Good and service were also amazing but it was definitely Harriet that made the experience top notch for us!!

We ordered three different dishes and each was not possible to finish. We went to a nearby restaurant to get the taste from our mouths. Also very overpriced for such low quality. This is in a town that has several very good restaurants all in easy walking distance - so I am surprised how bad The Barn can be and stay in business.

The cuisine is almost entirely veggie. If you like that, fine, five stars . There is a 12.5 per cent service charge

Lovely friendly staff, nice food. Dog friendly and good gluten free options. Not a place for a quick bite but definitely a meet up and chill kind of place.

This place is superb 👌 The food, the atmosphere, the staff alike. And the cake is outstanding- they could not make it dry and crumbly at all. I recommend this place totally Go ASAP

The service was very slow once ordered, yet were very pushy to take the order, older lady very abrupt. Then have the gumption to add a very high service charge automatically when we have received a rather rude and slow service. A good idea but lacking in the basics. Coffee burnt food good but overpriced for what you get.

I really love this place and have been a nunber of times. However, every time I have been the waiting time has been long. We waited about twenty minutes for our drinks, and it must have been an hour before our food arrived. Staff never apologise for the wait and never explain why it is taking so long. People have better things to do on a Saturday than twiddle their thumbs waiting. It’s not as if what we ordered was difficult - how long does it take to put a salad together?

This homely, high street escape is just exquisite. The fare is diverse and high quality with delicious pastries. However, it was the coffee(s) that captured me on my visit. The cortado was simply sublime. Rich, fruity and earthy. I would come here again and again for this alone.

I visited here to grab a quick coffee because my fave, Common Grounds, was packed. Can't fault the quality of the coffee – it was really lovely. But overall, I found the place a bit odd. I was charged 12.5% service charge – I have never experienced service charge being added to one coffee before. The staff seemed friendly but are a bit intense – pounce on you as soon as you step inside, without giving you the time to look at what you might like etc.

An excellent find "The Barn's Townhouse" excellent food great quality, love the place for it's unique décor everything is odd!!! Yup, not one thing matched :-) however, the food was excellent, coffee excellent and staff excellent. I only have one HUGE COMPLAINT - it is not close enough for me to get to very often :-(

Wonderful find! There are two separate buildings with entrances in different streets (coffee and cakes bar in East Street, restaurant with indoor seating and outdoor cabins in Little London); the two are shortly to be internally linked. The restaurant menu offers a lot of interesting items that you'd be hard pushed to find together elsewhere. There are also quite a few traditional favourites and Australian (!) coffee by Mel Bourne! This is an interesting and innovative restaurant featuring great food mainly sourced from the nearby Goodwood Estate. There is only daytime service but also a themed monthly supper club. Lunch is a little dearer than most, but well worth multiple visits - do try it!

Impatience staff didn't give us enough time to study the menu! Overpriced for what they served although it was testy but why would you serve a small size of salad in a very large bowl?! 12.5% service charge 🤷 Okay flat white usually get serve in a small cup but this one was very small isn't it!

I called in for coffee and a pastry as my preferred spot was busy and noisy, having heard good things about the coffee. The coffee was indeed pleasant. The cafe is decorated in the 'shabby chic' style; junk shop furniture and ganny's china, which is very discordant and somewhat distracting. Some of the waiting staff are rather loud. To cap it all a 12.5% service charge for a simple coffee and cake.

Coffee and food were to a pretty good standard AND THE STAFF WERE FRIENDLY but they apply a 12.5% service charge and don't accept cash. Any business that tries to fast track us into a cashless society won't get my business again sadly. CASH IS KING!

Well, actually taken at Lunchtime, but the late Michael Winner used to describe his really special courses as "Historic". That's the only word which seems appropriate for the Croissant with Berries and a generous dollop of Greek Yoghurt. Sensational. Paired with a Cortado. And how good to have a bottle of water placed on your table without asking. Do check this venue out. Hayling Seagoon

Went in for a coffee. Despite there being few customers, it took a long time for the drinks to arrive. The coffee was undrinkable - too large a cup and it tasted of nothing more than hot water. Scruffy surroundings and no heating didn’t help. As we left, we were amused by a sign claiming they serve the best coffee in Chichester. Er, no!

Although overpriced the food is lovely. However, our last visit was ruined by an extremely patronising staff member! Firstly, one of the older members of staff was rude and sarcastic to a young waitress, making her visibly embarrassed in front of us. Secondly, this same older member of staff made a very patronising comment to my younger sister (only 15 years old) who had brought in a bottle of drink she purchased elsewhere, implying that we lacked “etiquette”. This made us all feel very uncomfortable and has deterred us from visiting again. I understand establishments may not allow other products to be brought in, however, there is a way to go about this politely and without the sarcasm, especially to a young group of girls.

Disappointing. I’ve always been happy with the food here, but I’m not sure who made my toastie today—what a disappointment. For nearly £8, I’m shocked at what I was served. In the past, my meal always came with crisps, and salad, but today I had to choose just one? On top of that, the toastie had barely any filling and was flat as a pancake. If I hadn’t been meeting my friend for a catch-up, I would have refused it. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be returning in the future. This is not value for money—just a total rip-off.
