We had a lovely meal at the Barley Mow. Really good food and great service. We have missed eating here, its so nice to be back.

The Barley Mow is one of our two local pubs and it’s all that a great village pub should be, warm and welcoming with great food and several draught beers always on tap. We have just held a very special birthday party at the Barley Mow for some 70 friends. The buffet was absolutely fantastic and Hayley, Andrew and their Chef were all so attentive and spared no efforts to make sure that our event was such a great success. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they made the evening so really really special.

Went for Sunday lunch today with my family. Lovely warm welcome. We had booked the carvery. Sat down with our drinks then invited to go up to the carvery. Choice of 3 meats, Pork Turkey and Roast Beef. A fantastic selection of freshly prepared vegetables Yorkshire Puds, pork crackling stuffing and delicious meaty gravy. Complimentary sauces. Couldn't fault any part of the food. One of the best if not the best carvery I've ever had. Great value. Will definitely return. Thank you Barley Mow

The Manageress could not be more accommodating, however the food did not live up to our expectations. I went for the pie but was bitterly disappointed - the pastry was hard and very odd. The vegetables appeared to be left over from the previous day. The atmosphere and the hospitality were excellent - only to be let down by the quality of the food.

There was good and bad points at The Barley Mow. Firstly the good. The staff were excellent our service from the young lady was fantastic, the pub was spotlessly clean and the ambience was as expected for a smart country pub. However, whether it was due to our dining late in the afternoon I do not know. The food was plentiful, but in parts tasteless. The beef was too tough to eat, but the ham and turkey was lovely. The roast potatoes were the cook from frozen type and the gravy watery with no taste..The Yorkshire pudding was like a large round piece of cardboard. The vegetables nicely cooked. However at least half of the lunch from everyones plate was untouched The dessert were great. So it was very much mixed reviews. The surroundings were so nice and the staff so good that we will try The Barley Mow again, but at an earlier time for lunch,

Visited here after reading the reviews. The restaurant was busy, but far from full. There was a number of diners around our table that had clearly been waiting a long time, and were venting there polite frustration to the waiting staff. A clear indicator that this would be the case for our food, and was. The waiting staff appeared a little stressed, but coped as good as able. The fault obviously lies with the kitchen and it's management.

My husband l were regular locals to the Barley Mow of which was the best friendly local for miles. Having returned to the area we decided to call in for a drink and a meal only to find the alterations that had taken place and an unpleasant atmosphere. Whilst paying a visit to the Ladies l heard what could only be the chef shouting and swearing at a young member of staff, his attitude and behaviour could only be described as rude and disrespectful. It was then we decided not stay and find somewhere that management treat their staff with respect. What happened to the local village pub which was not full of strangers and an expensive menu ?

We hadn’t been here for many years but decided to pay a visit with the family. The place has been transformed since we were here last with the addition of a function at the back of the premises which was very bright and airy. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and there was a lovely atmosphere. The Sunday Carvery was very good with a good choice of meats and vegetables. The choice of sweets were varied and the portions were generous. There was a slight mix up with a prior order for our grandson but the staff were very apologetic and the problem was rectified amicably to our satisfaction. We will definitely be returning again soon to sample their specials board. Thank you for making Mothering Sunday very special for our family.

Phoned barley mow and were accommodated and there in 10 mins. Menu was really varied for a smallish pub but all of our meals, all different were excellent. Dad is picky about his steak, said he might not manage it all and then and scoffed the lot! Specials board was creative too. Had a lovely warm welcome from the lovely lady behind the bar who took good time to speak with me about local history and the setting of Offa's Dyke, before I went and took a seat. The young girl who took my order was pleasant enough.. gave her my order, told her how I liked my steak cooked and she was off... returned some time later with gammon when I'd ordered 16oz rump steak... she was most apologetic, but I took the meal.. and enjoyed it. On a visit to stay with friends the Barley Mow was recommended to us. On arrival we ordered drinks and stated we wanted to eat. The lady behind the bar took our drink order and asked us and a family waiting in the bar to follow her to the restaurant. we were seated and a young waitress took the familysame order but did not talk to us. The family were served very quickly ate and left and we still had not had our order taken. I approached the lady at the bar who was surprised and sent the young waitress to take our order. I felt sorry for her as it was clear she had received no training whatsoever and was clearly way out of her comfort zone. Eventually she took food and drink order. The drinksystem arrived promptly. At least Half an hour later no sign of food so I again went to bar to see what was happening. The bar was now full of people eating. I pointed out to the lady behind bars that we had still not been served and was told "what do you expect me to do about it". I went to kitchen and was told by chef that our order had only just come in but he was doing it now. Shortly afterwards 2 plates of Fish and Chips arrived with cold chips dripping in grease. That was enough so we left calling at the bar to pay for drinks. At least the drinks bill was waived. Also thanks to the chipper in Oswestry for fantastic Fish and chips later.

We could easily have been sent on our way to find another pub or restaurant which could have been miles away. The barley mow is a lovely homely building. It took a while to be given menus and then to have out orders taken, even we were the only ones waiting for food. The landlord on this occasion wasn't very polite or helpful. A group member asked if he could swap the potatoes that came with his steak for chips- it was a short abrupt answer of 'what is says is what you get. There wasn't any explanation or apology. He then dumped the knives and forks onto the table rather than laying them out. Not helpful or host like in the slightest. The steak pie is absolutely delicious! Highly recommended. Other people had the steak and hunters chicken which were both lovely. The puddings- peanut butter bread and butter pudding needs more peanut butter flavour as you don't notice it. As for the banoffee pie, terrible!!! Cold congealed toffee bit, very few banana slices and squirter cream on top..not worth the money!

Eat here with family whilst on holiday in area. Nice pub and Restuarant, good menu . Only complaint was my daughter asked for a meal that came with veg, and as she isn't a veg fan we asked would it be possible to have just chips instead of veg and potatoes. This wasn't possible the waitress told us as portions all made up and chips would have to be extra. So to save a fuss she ordered a starter as a main meal instead. Think this is ridiculous. Girl didn't have a clue. Besides that food was lovely. Grim reaper steak pie was great.

Great village pub with reasonably priced food. Midweek meal deals particularly good value, friendly atmosphere and service with a smile . Plenty of choice for ales, and wines. There is a small real ale brewery next to the pub and they brew 4 excellent ales. Worth visiting just for the real ales. The grim reaper steak pie is fabulous

After walking Offa's Dyke, we booked a table here, 6 of us, we all had lovely meals and deserts, the staff are very friendly, locals are very friendly - would love to return, and all of us enjoyed our food and the atmosphere, would advise to book a table, as it is very busy. Stayed at the lovely Lynstead Lodge B&B, would also highly recommend Lynstead Lodge but unfortunately its not on Trip Advisor.

Stopped off here having heard about it via the Shropshire Real Ale Trail. Trefonen is about 3 to 4 miles south west of Oswestry. Attached to the pub is a small real ale brewery and they brew 4 excellent ales. We were fortunate enough to get a brief guided tour by the owner who was again an excellent host. We stayed had a few pints and a great pub meal, quick, tasty and well priced.Got to be visited to try the ales at the very least.

Me and hubby went for a meal here. Its a very busy pub but greeted by a friendly guy shown through to restaurant which was suprisingly quiet. Lots of choice for both starters and mains, with specials on the blackboard in the dining room. I had the crab cakes which were delicious and got served quickly by a lovely waitress, main was a delicious steak pie, fab food, friendly staff. Definitely recommend a visit if your going that way.

We haven't been in for a Sunday dinner for a while but as our cousin was up visiting we thought the short walk to the pub would be a good decision. Two childrens meals, two Sunday lunches and a Hunters Chicken, all was lovely and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating.

I have read with disappointment the latest couple of reviews to this place because every time I've been i could not of met better staff and had better food , The Northern Irishman behind the bar is called stuart and could not be a better host of a public bar . He and all off his staff are in my opinion some of the best around , Jo is excellent as is henry , sorry if I've missed somebody out .The meal deal they do is £11 for 2 courses and you would go along way to beat it (hats off to the chef ) and the beer is always on the money .I would recommend this place to anybody. Ten stars from me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a complaint about the bad attitude we received when we visited The Barlow Mow recently. As soon as we walked in, the Irish Barman wasn't welcoming at all. He offered no conversation. His attitude was extremely bad and could possibly put off people coming back. This would a shame because we have often been to the Barley Mow and have excellent meals every time and the beer is always really enjoyable. I think that this fabulous pub could lose customers if he persists with his attitude. In my opinion, he is in the wrong job.

We have been coming to this pub for two years now probably every couple of months and always thought it great value simple food and excellent home brewed beer. Probably will visit for the last time as the person behind the bar with a strong Northern Irish accent obviously takes exception to serving people who does not visit every night and who he knows by name. The unpleasant surly attitude and deliberately unwelcoming manner to someone who simply came for a meal and a pint is totally out of place in a village pub. I am really sorry to see an excellent pub ruined by the careless choice of who they employ.

Fantastic fmood for a fantastic price. Me and my partner enjoyed the food, we had the sizzlers! Food was hot and full of flavour. The young waiter was fantastic her was polite and friendly, the actual restaurant was like a sauna. The radiator was on full so we soon left because the heat was too much, but we will definitely be back

Tracking this one down wasn't as easy as it should have been, as the brewery website is down and the pub website was inaccurate on various fronts (days of the week they do food and when the tours of the brewery are available!), but I'm glad we went anyway. The beer obviously was the big draw for my Da, who had some Grim Reaper and loved it! Despite a very Hot Fuzz "red or white" wine option offered, they actually have some nice wines too, a nice change since most beer-weighted pubs tend to go bog standard on wine selection. The food was good! The menu might seem standard pub food ish, but the quality and preparation is very, very high standard! It's the perfect blend of friendly local (service is excellent) and special enough for a night out and the prices are good!My one criticism is the seating is somewhat claustrophobic, but if you don't suffer from that you likely won't notice!

Our previous review was mysteriously removed so this is a new, more succinct review of the Barley Mow in the interests of Trip Advisor being an impartial guide and in the interests of us exercising our rights as consumers to report on a particularly unpleasant evening at this pub.On our first visit (two weeks prior), half of our party enjoyed their food and the other half thought it was very poor, especially the vegetable lasagne which tasted like it had come out of a £1 Iceland box. We are all real ale drinkers and let me tell you the beer is perfectly adequate but absolutely nothing to write home about. There are far better local real ales served locally. We decided to give it another go two weeks later based on half of our party enjoying the food and based on the good reviews here. We also decided to return despite people on another table finding a foreign object in their food that night. What a mistake. We will never return.Upon our arrival we were ignored at the relatively quiet bar as we waited politely and patiently to be acknowledged. When we were finally acknowledged we asked to order some food (well before the cut off time) only to be told they were fully booked. The place was not that busy and at the same time on our previous visit (same night of the week) the food demand had quietened down. We suggested eating outside on an empty table which we were perfectly happy to do. The girl serving went away and came back from the kitchen saying "She said no". I'm not paraphrasing here. Those were the three words this member of staff used to represent her company and obviously felt were an appropriate response to paying customers enquiring about spending some money. That attitude to customer service is, frankly, abysmal for a pub that apparently prides itself on being "friendly".

our last night in Trefonen we decided to eat at the Barley Mow. Can only confirm what almost everyone else said - excellent food and excellent service. good quality produce cooked to a very good standard. did have a little while to wait but the pub was rammed so it was expected. Advisable to book. As for the comment on the local brewed beer from from 1 review it must have been either an off night or they are not real ale drinkers as the beer is excellent.

The service was friendly and the food absolutely first-rate. Can recommend the Ploughman’s which is loaded with cheese, really top notch ham, and lovely crusty bread. Would have loved to stay for cake but we were all too full.

we always try to come here when we can get in and don’t fancy cooking one ourselves. the meat selection is always good and very generous, their roast potatoes are the best - lovely and crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. it is a carvery so can help yourself. they unfortunately don’t have any mash but we just add extra roasties! their gravy is lovely and homemade with the meat juices in. the staff are lovely and attentive. our favourite place to go for sunday lunch!

We booked for dinner as we knew the White Lion had reopened for food with a new chef. We were not disappointed the food was delicious, we had the rib eye steak, the sea bass special and the penne vodka. All were beautifully cooked and served. The service was great and the staff were friendly. We will definitely be eating here again.

We are regular visitors to the Red Lion in Myddle. We return every time because the food and service is second to none. We always receive a warm welcome and we know how hard Pete and Jackie and staff work to make sure that their guests are not disappointed. If you fancy a meal out around Shrewsbury (lunch or dinner) then look no further than the Red Lion. You won’t regret it.
