Second visit for a Sunday Lunch. Compared to last time this was a total disappointment. Roast was flooded in so much gravy everything was soggy. The vegetable selection consisted to 2 slices of carrot, 2 french beans and a couple of slithers of a chopped up parsnip. The roasties were tiny and whilst they looked overdone they were actually soggy, even where they weren't sitting in the gravy swamp. Lamb however was delicious as was the cauliflower cheese (£4 extra), the beef was tough. Sticky toffee pudding was a flat slab of sadness and the apple and rhubarb crumple didn't have a proper crumble topping and the custard was so thin. Drinks are served in nice glasses

We were recommended the Sunday roast here ,so booked ,I’m sorry to say it was one of the worst roasts I ever had ,the lamb was rolled and cut of a roll with stuffing inside ,laying on a few strips of vegetables ,roast potatoes were soft ,and a Yorkshire pudding! very disappointing for the price . Being £45,90 For two roasts

Service was excellent for the most part. I asked the waitress if it was permissible to have vegetables instead of tomato salad with the sea bream. She acquiesced and appeared to write this down. The sea bream arrived - with tomato salad! The sea bream was nothing special either. I would return as it’s a lovely venue in an ideal location but I would order something simpler like a burger.

Just returned from a fabulous lunch at The Barley Mow. Excellent friendly service and such attention to detail from both the server and the kitchen - in a party of 7 we had a coeliac (gluten free) and a dairy free (intolerance). A lovely choice for all on the menu and a confidence that they understood our needs. Highly recommend this pub.

Having visited this pub for Sunday lunch on many occasions and thoroughly enjoyed the food we were very disappointed at the drop in standard today when we visited. Normally an excellent roast with good tender meat and plenty of fresh vegetables the lunch today was way below previous experience. My roast beef was tough and overdone and the vegetables, where previously served separately, were a shredded mess under the meat and potatoes. The whole meal was distinctly average and for £21 per head a sad shadow of meals previously. I understand the pub has been taken over recently and a new chef is in place. Unfortunately, the food, and in today’s case the service too, was much to be desired. I will be finding a better venue for my Sunday roast in the future.

We drove from Edenbridge, just to visit the Barley Mow pub. The worst customer service I have experienced for donkeys years. Went into the pub at 11:45 yesterday, for a drink with my wife and 3 year old son. There must be over 20 tables in there, set up for lunches, all empty apart from 1 family having a chat. We walked in, went to the bar and of the 8+ staff members who all ignored us, one lady acknowledged our existence when we went to sit down as she said "do you have a booking?" I said we only want a drink, we had to stand, in an empty pub, until she confirmed we could sit there until 2pm. But we only wanted a drink, so she didn't listen to our requirements. No staff came to the table, so I went over and said, my wife would like a coffee and cake, can I see the desert menu, I was told as we didn't have a booking we can't have the desert menu! I looked over at who i presume was a manager, as he was older and he looked away! So we walked out and had to drive into Oxted town centre. We will never come back to this pub. Terrible service on Mothers Day. If you're not a public house where the public can come in and order a drink four hours after you've opened, don't advertise as a pub. You're a restaurant with bad customer service.

Very slow service although not busy. We sat for at least 30 minutes before our order was taken and had to request plates to be cleared. Had to ask for dessert menu not offered them. Food was average, some dishes better than others. My opinion is that staff dealing with food should have long hair tied back. One of the waitresses serving us had long hair that was hanging over the plates of food as she served. Not impressed won’t be returning.

This is a seafood Pub restaurant , a growing chain locally . Parking is an immediate issue , the car park is small and the village does not have a lot of alternative spaces. Great pub in a great location - lovely to combine a walk up pendle hill for an hour or two then back for a beer and food. The staff are friendly and helpful and good atmosphere - bit too hot in one of the rooms with a blazing fire. The food was just OK for us - was expecting more having read the menu and seen the reviews. The portions were quite small and nothing was very tasty. Had the mixed grill which was underwhelming and needed serious seasoning - plus the meat was not very tender. The chilli and rice tasted more like a ready meal and the rice was hard. Not sure I would go back for a main meal - would visit if I was having a walk and combined it with a drink and a sandwich

Where can I begin? We stayed at the Barley Mow this weekend for a two night stay. As soon as we arrived, we were made to feel welcome. The service was attentive and nothing was too much trouble. On the Friday night we were booked to have a meal- the food was absolutely outstanding. My husband is a real foodie who is notoriously difficult to please and all he could say was "stunning". We both had the duck salad to start, and I had the fillet steak for my main. I have spent a lifetime feeling frustrated at the inability of some establishments to cook steak medium rare, but they Barley Mow did it to perfection. The whole meal was utterly superb. We had breakfast on the Saturday and the Sunday morning- once again, the food was piping hot, and utterly delicious. Some of the best black pudding I have ever had the sausages are out of this world!I couldn't leave this review without commending the staff for the help they gave me on the Saturday night. We were staying in Pendle for a wedding and I returned late on the Saturday night with our little one. Just as I was dozing off she was violently ill- too much chocolate and dancing! Being away from home and away from my usual "Mum cupboard" full of spare bed linen and Dettol I had absolutely no idea what to do. I needent have worried. A quick trip down to the bar in my pyjamas later Jonny and Craig instantly appeared with towels, fresh bed linen, water and a little bag of colouring for my daughter who was so upset. Jonny even helped me lift my little one off the bed, getting vomit on his very lovely suit in the process. All offers of dry cleaning costs were shunned and we were assured it was no problem. To say they went above and beyond the call of duty for us is an absolute understatement and we are so grateful. We are already planning our next trip to the Barley Mow and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. With comfortable accommodation, outstanding food, and service that leaves you wanting for nothing you will not be disappointed.

Well appointed little pub which has had a massive facelift. Competing directly with the Pendle Inn, the pub has done a lot for bringing new business to the area. The pub appeals to a wide audience - more snooty tooty people than hardened workers though. You are more likely to see a pair of stilettos than a pair of muddied walking boots! The bar staff are friendly and welcoming and the open fires on a cold day are a big plus point when it is freezing outside. The outside benches are welcoming to dog owners and the outside smoking area is far too nice for smokers! The dining experience cannot compete with the Pendle inn. Whilst the menu sounds great, availability, delivery within two hours and portion sizes leave a lot to be desired. The pub opened in October 2014 and should have sorted the catering problems by now. That said, when the food arrives, it is ok but probably not value for money. It has however resulted in price increases in the pub opposite as both pubs are directly competing with each other. This venue has the edge on style, decor and friendliness but not on food. I should imagine that this will be resolved in time. Great venue for a glass of Prosecco though!!

Absolutely amazing food, the gammon was possibly the best for a long time and was at least an inch thick. Also had the burger which was delicious. However slightly let down on the fact that these large dishes came with a small handful of chips. Staff were absolutely fantastic and very willing to help. However, not a fan of the mildly pretentious wording of the menu. The steaks were "robata grilled with grill sauce"...after googling this found this to a type of grill rather than a grilling style, still unclear as to what the ambiguous grill sauce is. Also that the beefs were "Lancashire grass fed" which we were unsure if it was the grass that was from Lancashire or the cows, or if it even mattered at all?!Seemed not in keeping with the style the rest of the pub was aiming for which is stunningly decorated with real wood floors, cosy panelling, real fires which all says no-nonsense, quality, hearty, British food - which is definitely was!

Firstly, we didn't actually eat here, however, we will eventually get round to doing so, this is the first time we've visited the Barley Mow since it's refurb and I would just like to say how friendly the staff were who served us although we only visited for drinks. We each had a nice big pint of rothaus (that the lady serving even let us have a small beaker of before deciding if we wanted a pint) and sat outside in the sunshine with the resident witch before setting off on our walk. As I say, I can't comment on the food at present but did want to give a thumbs up to the friendliness of the staff in general.

Went for a Sunday lunch. The meals were well cooked and very nice but with four meals puds and drinks coming to £100 it seemed too much. Not surprisingly the place wasn't very busy. I don't think we'll be back.

We recently visited with some German guests and the food was excellent. We were just in time to benefit from the lunchtime menu offer which was superb value and the food exceeded our expectations. Ev ery one of our party enjoyed their food so much that the week after our guests had departed my husband and I went again to enjoy their scrumptious cheese pie. The only drawback is the very, very limited parking there and I am not the world's best driver for getting my car into tight gaps! I feel as if I deserve a round of applause whenever I manage to get into - or out of - one of their designated spaces even if one happens to be available. The food, the service and the ambience (apart from the always intrusive piped music) were very good. We will definitely be back - though I might have to park in the nearby Barley public car park (where there is a charge).

Warm and friendly welcome as soon as we walked through the door. Staff very polite and attentive. Food was excellent, I had duck spring rolls and the burger, both tasty and well presented. Well kept cask beer (Wainwrights). Great experience, can't fault it.

Nuestra

Got charged £6.50 for a starter that was 3 small chicken nuggets. I asked if that was normal as it seemed very little for a starter AND at that price. Was just answered with a curt 'yes' and then the manager walked off. Poor, very poor.

Went with a group of friends and we were greeted by "Hope you've booked as we're full". Not very welcoming! I love the Assheton Arms, one of the same chain, and was aware that this place was being promoted as a 'Walkers' Pub' so wasn't expecting the same menu. I WAS expecting the same quality though, both in terms of service and standard of food, and I didn't get it. Waiting staff were over-familiar, the food was ok at best. There was a rowdy group of people by the door as we were leaving, presumably staying the night. I could only feel sorry for the Barley locals.I won't be going again.
