The Bar Convent Cafe in York

A lovely cafe in a great location. The cakes, coffee and lunches are always excellent, with great service. Good pirtions, generous food, great quality. The cheese scones are the best I have ever had: one of those with a bowl of soup is fantastic. Go in warm weather and sit at the garden tables - paradise in the centre of busy York, just 5 minutes walk from the train station.

Great experience here always. Happy & efficient staff & friendly too. Great food & always enjoyable no matter what you've chosen . First class lunch experience & my friends just loved it . We are going back there very soon .! Best to book a table in advance has it gets quite busy around lunchtime .

A very beautiful cafe/restaurant space in a fascinating building - still part of a working Convent. Very friendly and professional, with a good choice of well cooked breakfast items and hot drinks. Sensible prices too and only a short 10 minute walk from the Station. Go and enjoy.

Popped into the cafe after visiting the exhibition and chapel for tea and cake. Cake was lovely. Sitting in the atrium was so peaceful, we could have stayed there for hours. An oasis amidst the hectic streets.

We have lived in York for over 15 years and been coming to they city for over 30 years and until last year we had never visited the Bar Convent. It is a very lovely spot for lunch/afternoon tea especially on a lovely summer's day. The garden is just stunning. The food is good, fresh and plentiful. If you get the chance do visit.

Just got off the train and was looking for some lunch. Our original choice was closed. So consulted Trip Advisor for a nearby alternative. This place came and up. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great food, staff and location.

Been here before so knew what it would be like. I was not disappointed. Great service and great food at a reasonable price. We had baked potatoes and also macaroni cheese please drinks.

A lovely experience eating in a calm and peaceful setting. Staff were kind and friendly. Some may have been volunteers and were very capable and clearly enjoyed there work. Good choice of food and fairly reasonably priced. A mix of people dining from groups to business people to families. Great setting and lots of history attached to the building.

The Bar Convent Cafe delightfully serves excellent breakfasts and lunches in a lovely glass ceiling cafe, a perfect respite for a weary traveler. The servers are kind, friendly, helpful, and fast on their feet.

Coffee time or lunchtime is always very good at the Bar Convent café. And the café staff are well organised and very pleasant. Also the whole place is normally very peaceful and, mercifully, free of music. Sadly, today it was not at all peaceful. A member of staff (NOT the café staff) was engaged in a VERY LOUD and long conversation with some visitors making it very difficult for other customers to hear each other. Clearly, a number of people were extremely irritated. Unfortunately, perhaps because we are all very polite we did not complain; we should have done!

A quiet and well run café just by the Walls of York at Mickelgate. Very good food and drink and excellent choice.

Found this amazing place just by chance and went in for coffee. We were very fortunate to get a guided tour of the Convent and hear all it's history. The gift shop has a lot of interesting things and there is an exhibition but sadly we ran out of time to visit but will go back later in the year.

Lovely café in nice sedate surroundings and there's a lawned area for when it gets a bit warmer. The coffee and food are good and the breakfast is very good.

My wife and I, and a friend, ate lunch here while on a trip to Yorkshire in August 2021. We had two of the daily specials (mine was bacon, potato rosti, and mushrooms), and they were fairly good, although not special. The total bill, for the three of us, was £35, including three soft drinks, so that was fair.

Popped in twice, firstly for coffee and cakes - both delicious and generous in portion- secondly for breakfast the following morning. Again generous bacon sandwich at such a reasonable price. Lovely freindly and welcoming setting that also includes a museum and shop, as well as lovely rooms to stay in overnight- equivalent to or better than what you'd expect at the typical hotel. Vegetarian and gluten free options are available. Gardens available depending on the weather. Well worth a visit.

I continue to meet friends at the Bar Convent café for a strong cafetière of coffee and an enormous fruit scone. When the weather is good we can sit in the garden. If it starts to rain we de-camp to the entrance atrium which is high and airy and feels safe in these covid-19 times. As always the staff are excellent and welcoming.

Estábamos en Kwick - Fit Tadcaster Road, y entramos en York. Llegamos al cruce de Blossom Street y Nunnery Lane, y decidimos ir a The Bar Convent Cafe. Qué ambiente tan impresionante e impecablemente limpio, solo queríamos una taza de té para dos y un sándwich, optamos por Bacon Sandwich cada uno, para Pasar el tiempo. Ambos se sirvieron rápidamente y el sabor era excelente, hacen otros bocadillos y bocados ligeros.También hay un hotel / be & be en el sitio y también es útil para la estación de tren de York.En general, la visita cumplió su propósito, pasó el tiempo cómodamente ya que afuera estaba bastante agitado.El personal atento y bien vestido. Gracias a todos que volveremos a visitar.

Had an appointment nearby and was early, so called for a coffee. It was lovely and hot and service was quick but I was the only person in the cafe. About three staff behind the counter chatting. I chose a table away from the counter and one overlooking the garden. Chintzy look to the place but nice. Pleasant half hour spent with my drink and one other customer by the time I left. It was midweek so maybe this is the reason it was quiet

This is a working convent with a guest house and cafe generating income for the good works. The staff are friendly, the accommodation good ( not outstanding) and breakfasts, especially the Yorkshire cooked breakfast ,absolutely great. It is very conveniently situated next to Micklegate and housed in an interesting historical building. Good value and really recommended

Hubo un intercambio muy extraño en la caja. Pedí que mi matraz se llenara de capuchino y luego solicité otro capuchino para mi amigo. ¿Se llevan los dos? Me preguntaron y dije que no, pero la dama persistió. Presumiblemente hay una diferencia en el costo? ¡Muy raro!

Justificadamente popular.

Éramos un pequeño grupo de amigos que queríamos almorzar y charlar. El bar cafetería convento encajaba perfectamente. Excelente comida, pudimos sentarnos en la mesa todo el tiempo que queríamos, y lo mejor de todo: NO HABÍA música de hilo. La frecuencia con la que la música no deseada dificulta la posibilidad de mantener una conversación, ya que agrega otra capa de ruido al entorno. El Bar Convent es un hermoso edificio, ve y disfruta. Reserve una mesa con antelación si puede.

Estuvimos una noche en York yendo a un concierto. Queríamos tener un almuerzo de Navidad con todos los adornos. Nos registramos este café y parecía razonable. Además, el menú en el sitio web sonaba bien. Un poco caro para dos platos, pero el café y la opción incluidos y un mini pastel de carne picada. Decidimos reservar una mesa. Lo hicimos 2 días antes. La señora que tomó la reserva sugirió que viniéramos por 1. 45 como estaban ocupados antes de eso. Así que acordamos esta vez. Mis expectativas eran altas. Cuando llegamos parecía caótico! Tuvimos que ir al café y dar nuestro nombre. Luego no nos llevaron a nuestra mesa, aparentemente estábamos en el conservatorio. Encontramos nuestra mesa que tenía nuestro nombre. Nos sentamos y esperamos. ¿Nadie nos preguntó primero si queríamos una bebida para acompañar nuestra comida? Finalmente llegó una señora con nuestra cena? Dije que hemos sido ignorados? Ella dijo 'No', estamos ocupados. Entonces pedí bebidas, ¿no hay carta de vinos? ¿Acordamos tener 2 copas de Shiraz? Esto vino después, era rojo de la casa y se saboreó.La cena en el plato era Luke tibia pero las verduras y las patatas, etc. estaban bien. Una pequeña cantidad de salsa en una jarra pequeña estaba en mi plato. La comida estuvo bien pero teníamos hambre.Después de una enorme brecha, cambiaron nuestros platos. This cafe could certainly, rival any baking created on Great British bake off,absolutely delicious we had a date and walnut scone and a slice of Bakewell tart, well worth a visit.

Visité la cafetería para un almuerzo de aperitivos de mi hotel cerca. Personal muy agradable allí y también en la tienda de regalos y en la recepción.Además del café en sí, era un lugar interesante para mirar alrededor: el museo sobre la vida del fundador, su historia y la hermosa capilla escondida. Es un convento en funcionamiento; las monjas pasan sus días trabajando en la comunidad y viven en el sitio. También alberga monjas jubiladas. También hay 20 habitaciones que permiten ser y que tienen un precio razonable teniendo en cuenta la excelente ubicación cerca del centro de York.El café en sí era popular y muy asequible. También hay un hermoso jardín en la parte trasera donde te puedes sentar; Logré tener una charla interesante con un jardinero amigable allí.En total, pasé una agradable hora y media allí.

If you want to have a lunch or a coffee The bar convent is a truly historical building full of surprises. The entrance is full of character with an incredible floor and ceiling. As a few remaining nuns are still resident here there is an excellent gift shop with religious items as well as other good quality gifts. The cafe area also offers room to eat outside and the menu is varied and affordable. Bed and breakfast is also offered. Hidden on the second floor is a wonderful chapel with a priest hide hole and Mary Ward relic. Well worth a visit because of its convenient location 2 mins walk from the train station.

Quaint, not your usual big hotel style, a unique experience,the walking tour was very interesting, historical.room was fine lots of winding passageways , lift available,breakfast and garden included, good.close to train station and lots of restaurants just inside the nearby city old wall gate. Separate guest kitchen and laundry if you want to do your own thing.washing machine needed a degree in electronics to operate without swallowing pound coins. Overall highly recommended particularly if you are tired of big hotels.

I met a friend in here and it was lovely. Nice tea and cake and the atmosphere was really lovely. When returning will be popping in again.

Good for popping in on the way too work. I choose Bar Convent over other cafes because of the Fairtrade coffee, nice staff, interesting historical site, and the scones are delicious. The bakes are also great, and there's several gluten-free options. I look forward to booking an afternoon tea sometime!

Stayed as guests at the Bar Convent. We had cooked breakfasts both mornings - these were freshly cooked and very tasty. We also had a lunch from the specials board -again, quickly prepared and very tasty. Highly recommended!

This cafe is a gem just outside Micklegate Bar, the main entrance to the City of York.

York's best-kept secret! A lovely, peaceful, well-run gem of a place with friendly, welcoming staff and delicious top-quality food. Breakfast, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea: you name it: it will be fab, and great value too. Hic bene editur! And amen to that!
