Trembling Madness is one of our favourite spot for crazy beers. They always have such nice beers variety on offer on tap as well as cans and bottles. Such cool & cosy atmosphere inside. Upstairs building has different kinda ceilings like historical stuff. I heard the beams are from old Viking ships. Quirky and cozy seating area. The shop downstairs has large layout of beers variety you can ever see which you could take upstairs to buy and drink if you’d like. Limited but delicious food specially cheese boards that are great we friends shared. Happily recommend

Part medieval apothecary, part beer lover’s paradise! The bottle shop downstairs is stocked with an incredible selection of craft beers, ciders, and spirits from around the world. Whether you're after a rare Belgian ale, a bold IPA, or something completely new, they’ve got you covered. Upstairs, the quirky tavern feels like stepping into a Viking mead hall with its rustic charm, taxidermy, and candlelit tables. Perfect for sipping on a unique brew or enjoying their delicious food. The staff are always happy to recommend something exciting. If you love great beer, history, or just a fantastic pub experience. Cheers!

Although I was recommended this place, I did take me a little while to find it as the pub is upstairs from the shop. Once you are upstairs, you a transported back to the old ages with this amazing pub. We had a table booked for food later on but if we had a chance to, we would have cancelled and eaten here. The food look delicious, amazing and plentiful and for a very good price. The drinks were also fantastic, with local beers a plenty. Highly recommended when visiting York.

Visited after seeing good reviews on Google, but sadly our experience didn’t reflect this We asked for a food menu as we couldn’t see one only to be told to look on other people’s table to find one by a condescending cocky bar man with dark hair I asked him for a beer recommendation and he just pointed at the board and said which one do you want, couldn’t even be bothered to recommend something to me Once my food came which was soggy and bland pie, my girlfriend asked for salt and pepper and he was sarcastic to her telling her to look at the end the of bar, she couldn’t see it was there as someone was sat in front. If you have an attitude like that don’t work in a public facing environment when you clearly aren’t happy being there. Such a shame as we’d really been looking forward to visiting

Even as a Belgian myself, I was impressed by their extensive collection of Belgian beers, some of which I had never seen before. Similarly, their prices are more than fair, and in some cases more affordable than back home. This unusual bar was recommended to us. It was our first time in York, and after a walk we went to a bar. We sat down at the bar, the bartenders and waiters saw us several times, but no one wanted to clear the table after the previous guests, we asked to clear the table, after which the dishes were cleared. But the table remained unwiped and dirty with sticky spots. My wife asked me to wipe it, they gave her napkins and a cleaning product so she could wipe it herself 🫠. We ordered 2 beers and two dishes. My order was not completed completely, because before serving the bartender came and said “I have bad news” there is no sauce for your dish, my wife said what should we do? He was like, well, I can just bring the order. The general impression is that the bartenders are not interested in guests, and they also do not need new clients. The beer store on the ground floor was nice and cool

Only reviewing the mail order beer experience. Never been to the bar itself - one day though, it looks amazing. This is the best bottle shop in the UK. I've looked at 10s (if not 100s) and I regularly order from around 5 (have done so from, maybe, 10). I've placed many orders and, truly, they got me through Covid and beyond! Really good range (though not as many as Beers of Europe but a more diverse selection, especially imports). BoE pull ahead in ales/bitters (preventing HoTM being a one-stop, depending on what you like) but still excellent. Little affordances such as being able to ask for dispatch on a particular day really help with scheduling. There have been a few mishaps - generally the courier dropping a parcel - but these were all quickly corrected and I can promise that every online vendor I've tried suffers from this. Generally the website is great (certainly better than BoE which doesn't allow out-of-stock to be excluded). Not quite as strong as Ghost Whale who do a better job of aligning the on-page selection with what is already present in your basket. Ghost Whale also putting key information upfront without forcing a click-through which saves time. An example would be showing the ABV on the card (although it does allow me to filter on it). A more refined front-menu and more extensive filtering options would be a benefit. It's close between HoTM and GW but I've regularly found myself favouring the former of late. One day a site will hook into my Untappd profile and prevent me from ordering beers I've already consumed but until that happens (or until Untappd allow it since I don't think their API supports), these guys are the best.
