My favourite place in York! One of the best platters I’ve ever had, generous portions, good price and presented beautifully. Cosy vibe, seating is limited but worth hanging around for a bit as a space usually becomes available. Website needs a bit of updating as food isn’t served past 10pm, which is fine, but may catch some people off guard.

Great and usual place. Downstairs there is a shop that sells all the alcohol you would ever want. Even some I have never heard of. Upstairs is a very old but incredibly trendy bar/restaurant we went for drinks and we wasn't disappointed. We was served by two lovely ladies who where very enthusiastic and very happy to work there. The drinks are reasonably priced for york and it was very busy. Which means it must be good! I must mention the toilets are in the basement past the shop and there is more alcohol in glass cabinets which is so amazing and unique and the toilets are very bizarre see for your self lol. But another must go in york.

What a great little pub in fact 2 pubs as they have two very different establishments. One is an above a bottle shop with stuff animals on the wall and lucky the dog over looking events and one with a bottle shop over the pub. Great beer and the food in them looked nice but did not try

Often have beer delivered from here, so had to stop in when in York. Great selection of beers in the shop and the bar was lovely. Had a few nice cask/keg beers. Staff lovely.

Really good staff and a massive selection of miniatures which were perfect for a gift.

I love the decor which is unique but we couldn't believe the goings-on to be honest. Starting with childish behaviour from the bar staff - we are talking pretend "wrestling" behind the bar & lots of shouting between staff which even in student union bars is unacceptable to running out of mash potato so we had to quickly find somewhere else to eat for dinner to going in at 11.45 for a bacon sandwich only to be tersely told by the cook that he had to "prep his pumpkin soup and stew" and that if we wanted any food then we should come back in an hour ! God forbid that he couldn't cope with bacon / sausage sandwiches whilst prepping veg. And yes, there were no other customers waiting - no wonder !

An interesting place that combines a liquor store (basement and ground floor) with an ale house kind of restaurant (1st floor) Arguably, the roof of the restaurant looks like an inverted Viking ship. Check my pictures and form your own opinion. The food, prepared with produce sourced by local producers, is delicious and portions are generous. The sausages, mash and greens are awesome. The only inconvenience of the restaurant is the furniture. Too bulky for such a tiny space. Get a table just before noon, as they are occupied quickly at regular lunchtime.

10/10 loved this places, the decor and aesthetic here is amazing and the staff were lovely too! Met the nicest bartender, didn’t manage to get his name but he was working the upstairs bar monday night (30th) around 7pm he was very knowledgeable about the drinks and was overall such a lovely person so interact with, complimented my outfit too which was so nice of him🥹thank you!

Incredible bottle shop and pub, ambience is incredible in the upper floor. danger is going to the loo, you might spend a fortune on one of the sublime bottles in the walled cabinets!

Best place for a drink in York! The small menu is perfect to have with a beer or two. The beers are superb, a great variety and you can even drink what your buy downstairs in the Off licence area, up in the pub!! A must visit when in York!

Amazing experience if you are in York it is a must. I would also heavily recommend trying the black cherry mead

Quirky...and if you're one of those weirdos who thinks a pint is too big 😮 or a half is too small, they serve beer in 2/3 measures.

We found The House of the Trembling Madness more or less by accident on our way to get a meal at a different venue. It has a wide selection of beer, cider etc. and the sharing platters are substantial , and exactly what we enjoy, we had the cheese one. The room is small, and up a flight of stairs, it is quaint, and has views over the roofs to the minster. I’ve only docked a star because staff were very slow to clear tables, and wipe them down, after previous customers had left.

Quirky bar above an unbelievably well stocked beer shop (and spirits in the basement). They had a good selection of IPA (including double),one lager and a stout when we visited but the range changes regularly. Our burgers were really excellent and I'm not a burger guy usually. Thick burger, tasty cheese and bacon and a good home made slaw. The staff were all friendly and helpful despite clearly being busy serving and preparing food orders in a tiny kitchen. Definitely a place I would recommend and will visit again.

If any one going to York always say you got to go to the house of the trembling madness for beer food and the wood work in roofs I order on line and great selection of products with fast delivery

We came in January and loved the atmosphere. We drank at the bar for a little while, then grabbed a table. I had a couple of pints, and my wife had a couple of Ciders, which she loved. My wife and Son had Burgers, and I had Meat Pie with Mushy Peas. Loved it! Next time we’re back in the UK, would love to come back!

Excellent pub food and drinks. I recommend. I had the steak pie with mash and ale gravy... brilliant shop on the ground floor for all sorts of beverage

Absolutely a must if you visit York. Great place dog friendly. I can recommend the Belgium beers. Looking forward to popping in again soon

Amazing ye olde pub with original timber interiors great choice of beers and food with cosy ye olde atmosphere, and even had some mead. Staff very nice and freindly too. Also great choice of beers on tap as well as tonnes of cool drinks in the shop below (at street level which is a tad confusing at the start). Definitely shall go again when I’m back in York.

Interesting upstairs for a drink. Bottle shop downstairs. Lot of choice on tap. Lot of choice bottled. Deffo a tourist place but thankfully not doing lots of food so more like a boozer. Not many kids unlike the rest of York!

Probably the best pub I have been too in the country! Smashing bottle shop downstairs where you can buy drink to take upstairs for a corkage fee!! Also one of the few places I the country that sells mead! Proper winner Cheers!

Chilled out nostalgic pub/ beer shop which serves excellent food 😋 which gers overshadowed in reviews by the excellent beer choices, the food is truly delicious definitely worth a visit .

A great pub, kind of hidden upstairs. It has an outstanding beer selection. (Public service announcement: If a friendly guy named Jamie asks you to join him for a beer, don’t do it! You’ll end up drinking until 5:00 am.)

If you really like your beers, this place is heaven. A good selection from the taps upstairs and the most amazing bottle shop I have ever seen downstairs. Tasty food as well - Belgian-inspired soup and stew on the menu at lunchtime

This may be our favourite spot for beer and nibbles in York. It’s such a cool atmosphere. Upstairs in this historic building, it has vaulted ceilings, with beams are from old Viking ships. Quirky and cozy. Good selection of Belgian beers in the bar. The shop downstairs has about every beer ever made that you could take upstairs to drink if you’d like. Limited but delicious food includes cheese and meat boards that are just great to share with a group. It’s quirky and friendly.

Gezellige pub boven het dranken winkeltje. Zeer lekker gegeten. We hadden 2 plankjes met van alles besteld om te delen. Daarna de burger. Hun worst met pure bij de buren zag er ook lekker uit. Knus gezellig en vriendelijk team

A truly awesome craft ale house in a magnificent historic setting. We visit here on every trip to York. It is a MUST.

Used to be a great place however Environmental health need to visit . Website states food served until midnight . 9 pm Sunday . Kitchen closed …… but look at this that hasn’t been taken away for hours we stayed for a drink ! Just to give you an update : You appear to be talking rubbish about wait on food as the guy told he had RAN OUT of food . Also the table was cleared certainly not as quick as stated . Always best to get the story right before posting replies as this affects your business integrity . Great customer service also I see 👌

Absolutely excellent pub with a great choice of ales and craft beers. Can really see that there has been a lot of thought put into the beers on tap. Food is fantastic and bar snacks are reasonably priced. Can be busy at times and a good local spot

Tables left with dirty dishes on it for HOURS. Kitchen closed 9pm although website stated otherwise. Used to be a great place but ran by kids now

I think it was the best pub in York! It's full of locals, and the employees are very nice and work quickly. I think I hit a good store. The fatigue from work was also blown away. I think the ones in the picture were the Country Platter and the Madness Platter. The volume is amazing.

Good atmosphere and nice drinks with friendly staff. We went for food but they had an issue with the kitchen so weren't serving the full menu and we didn't fancy what was available. They were really good about it and recommended a few other options nearby which was nice of them. Great range of drinks with some really interesting ones and the staff were happy to recommend a drink based on the alcohol level we wanted. Fun place to have a drink.

Grand visit this week to this bar. Loved dark ales and pie, mash and mushy peas. Looking very the decor in this amazing building although loos long hike in basement. Staff knowledgeable and helpful Would deffo recommend visit 😁

Small room above the store. A little kitsch decoration with animal heads but the room has a real soul. Very wide choice of beer, bottle or draft. And very good advice from the staff. The kitchen was not working when I was there. Things to do in York.

A Mediaeval pub upstairs🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️tasty food, friendly stuffs, viking atmosphere. Definitely worth drop by for a beer and enjoy the night!! Also stayed at the apartment next door, a traditional medieval house with modern facilities, an unique and wonderful experience of York❤️❤️

Good old fashioned pub in the city centre. Good choice of ales and friendly staff. Was going to have food, but there was over an hour wait as they were busy.

What a great selection of Belgian beers (plus others), very enjoyable couple of hours spend there after a great day of sightseeing on York. Would highly recommend it to beer afficionados.

For anyone, especially the lovers of great beer ,but not limited only to those, this small taxidermy decorated pub is offering (in my humble opinion) one of the best beer experiences in York.

Pub upstairs with lots of atmosphere.

A beautiful, medieval, norman structure. Everything is crooked and chaotic but the atmosphere and selection of beers is outstanding. Too bad I couldn’t try the good looking dishes they were serving all around us.

Brilliant drinks, great food, fantastic building, lovely staff and reasonable prices - what more could you want? Been half a dozen times now and every visit was as good as the first - food is VERY, VERY good!

Amazing little place, food and staff were brilliant. How they produce what they do in such a small space is beyond me. Very reasonably priced too.

This place is an absolute must if you are visiting York. Very eccentric and £5 a pint for lager. The surroundings are absolutely captivating. Not the biggest of bars so arrive early to guarantee a seat. You won’t be disappointed. I’ve had food here previously and it was great. It’s definitely a talking point to bring friends to!

A beautiful little pub hidden away from the general public. Very old fashioned traditional place found on the first floor above an ale shop. Mainly focusing on ales and IPAs. I enjoyed a beer and a burger here and the burger was absolutely amazing. Probably the best I've had in York. The size was very good. 1 burger was enough to satisfy me and my 6 year old. Does not accept cash so sadly I can only give it 4 stars. But it is well worth a visit

This place was amazing! The mead was top tier and the atmosphere felt like a real slice of York; welcoming, unpretentious and rich with history. We will be back from the States next year to spend more time in York. It was the surprise hit of our first family trip to the UK.

What an insanely gorgeous, intimate little bar. Charm factor through the roof. Per the menu they also rent rooms, which is pretty cool because they are a whole vibe. Negatives: dang it got hot in there. Small and close, meet your neighbors for sure, and the seats weren't particularly comfy. Service on food is verrrryyy slow as they have a small kitchen, so I'd recommend go for drinks but eat elsewhere unless you really aren't in any kind of hurry.

We had lunch here Lovely food had the salmon pate with olives gherkins coleslaw and crusty bread and a pork pie topped with cheese served with piccalilli Good service from pleasant staff will definitely go again 😋

Beer ok but couldn’t help being a bit disgusted by the frequency the bar staff touched their noses, mouths, moustaches, beards and ran their hands through their unwashed hair prior to serving customers. Bit minging really.

Great place to experience the funky side of York. Nothing fancy but food, staff, and surroundings are great and funky. It's located upstairs and you order at a small bar, it can be crowded but it goes in cycles. Safe and fun place. Stuffed animals of all kinds on the walls with open beamed ceiling. I didn't see any wheelchair access and stairs are steep

As excellent as it is weird. Well worth a visit.

Bar staff on Friday night were rude. Didn’t want to help deciding on what to drink despite our confusion with the menu. My boyfriend had one drink and tried to order close to cut off, told him he was too drunk even though he’d had less than me as they wanted to close and then tried to rush us out. Never had an experience like it here, it’s absolutely appalling, was my favourite pub in York. Not anymore with the people they’ve hired, not interested in their customers, more interested on when they get to bed

Food menu is small but great for picky bits and sharing. Great atmosphere.

Very interesting and cool place that you wouldn’t know existed just by looking at it as you have to go through the beer shop and up the stairs to get to the pub! Good was excellent - HUGE portions but still tasty. Drink selection was obviously good as well being that it’s connected to the craft beer shop below. Only gripe was that everything was just a tad sticky on our visit (menus, tables, seating) even more than the usual pubs you go into but hey it happens.

Great place for a fantastic range of craft beers and great atmosphere. however some staff can be rude and ignorant in the last 30 minutes of opening times so I wouldn't bother coming here after 11pm even for 1 quiet drink.
