Super recommended bar. Incredible decoration, it looks like a real labyrinth with a horror atmosphere, rooms that emulate dungeons, coffin-shaped tables, and even a cinema in one of the rooms where they show scary movies. One of the best bars I have found. The approximate price of a pint is 6 pounds.

Unfortunately, my experience with the security at the entrance was disappointing. The behavior of the security staff seemed hostile and discriminatory, not only towards people from other backgrounds but even towards Europeans. He made a comment about my Air Force sneakers, stating there was a minimum dress code required, but once inside, we noticed others wearing the same sneakers had no issues. Additionally, there were uncomfortable moments with inappropriate jokes and a sarcastic attitude during the interaction. If you're looking for a more welcoming atmosphere, I would suggest considering nearby pubs instead.

WORST BAR IN EDINBURGH! EXTREMELY RUDE SECURITY! IT SEMEED LIKE IT WAS AN ACT OF XENOFOBIA! I visited the Labyrinth bar on January 25th and 26th. On the 25th, the security guard was extremely rude and harsh and didn’t let us in because we didn’t have physical IDs. We are foreigners, tourists, and don’t carry our passports everywhere due to the risks involved. We asked if a photo of the ID would work (as all other bars accepted it), but he refused. Fine! We returned the next day with our physical IDs, and he still didn’t let us in because we were wearing sneakers – even though there were many people inside the bar wearing sneakers! He was extremely rude! Don’t go to this bar; what was supposed to be a peaceful night out turned into a stressful experience! I don’t recommend it to anyone!

My friend showed me this interesting bar, and although I usually don’t drink much, I ordered at least a bottle of cider. I couldn’t finish even a half of it still, but it was in a bottle so I just was on my way outside the bar. The security guard forcefully pulled the bottle out of my hand and only then said it wasn’t allowed to take it outside the bar. I have two things to note: 1. Please explain your security guards that it’s polite to talk a bit nicely to visitors and first do the talking, and then accept the bottle. I don’t want anyone to approach me forcefully, I could just leave it myself. 2. This is an outrageous policy per se. I paid for the bottle, and I see no reason why I can’t take it away, it’s not in a glass that belongs to the bar or anything like that. If it has anything to do with me having an open bottle on the street, that is my responsibility, and maybe I would jump right into a taxi. And normally, a good place would offer to seal the bottle so that it could be taken outside without causing any legal problems.

The Banshee’s Labyrinth is truly a fantastic spot for a night out in Edinburgh! From the moment you step inside, you’re in for a unique experience. Despite the unassuming entrance, the place is massive inside, sprawling across several rooms with multiple bars, each offering its own vibe and atmosphere. Whether you’re looking to sit back and enjoy a well-crafted cocktail or dive into the lively energy of the main bar areas, there’s something here for everyone. The drinks menu is fantastic, offering a wide selection to satisfy any taste. From classic cocktails to craft beers and unique spirits, the bartenders know how to pour a great drink. The staff is friendly and quick, keeping the energy high and ensuring that everyone has a good time. One of the things that makes the Banshee’s Labyrinth so memorable is its labyrinthine layout – as you explore, you find yourself in different rooms and hidden spaces that make it feel like an adventure. The unique decor, with a hint of gothic charm, adds to the experience, making you feel like you’re in a truly one-of-a-kind venue. In a city filled with vibrant nightlife, the Banshee’s Labyrinth stands out as one of the best places to be. A filthy bar, where the waiters/bartender are rude, almost no HACCP rules are respected, the waitress/bartender dips the coke dispenser in the glass? You have to take into account that it is a job and that you have to wash your hands between two different actions. Which of course they don't do. I still can't understand how it is possible to refuse access to this very low quality bar, or even at all, to people wearing jogging pants? Your bar smells of mold, the toilets and staff are dirty, and yet you manage to laugh in the faces of polite and respectful customers who face you only because they have jogging pants? Lamentable. Go to a bar where respect and kindness are advocated, anything but that one.

I wasn't expecting anything from this place except maybe a little weird fun. What I got was definitely fun but in the sweetest locals-are-the-best way. I went for karaoke but got invited into the cinema room for a storytelling show called "Diary Confidential" in which grown adults read real things they wrote as kids. It was a touching window into young innocence and angst, and poignantly revealed how we confusing it is to grow up trying to make sense of what the world around us tells us is right/wrong. The locals were cheering for every sentence and meaning every clap and whoop. The bartender, Connor, was an absolute sweetheart and made me feel right at home from the moment I entered the darkened halls. Would recommend to anyone looking for something a little different from the classic pub experience.

The first Saturday of the month is Fright Night 👻 Did you know Banshees are mythical creatures deeply rooted in Irish folklore, often depicted as female spirits who wail and keen as harbingers of death. They are believed to appear before a death in a family, particularly those of old Irish lineage. Descriptions vary, but banshees are commonly portrayed as pale, spectral women with long, flowing hair dressed in white or grey robes. Their mournful cries are said to be heard at night, signalling impending doom. Legend has it that each family has its own banshee, bound to their bloodline, with her appearance typically preceding the death of a family member. While banshees are often associated with sorrow and foreboding, they are not considered malevolent or harmful themselves. Instead, their presence is seen as a warning or a form of mourning. The origins of banshees remain shrouded in mystery, with some theories linking them to ancient Celtic beliefs in supernatural beings associated with death and the afterlife. Over time, banshees have become iconic figures in Irish mythology, featured in literature, art, and popular culture, where their haunting presence continues to captivate imaginations around the world 🧚♀️🪄✨️🍺

The first time I visited Café St Honoré I thought I’d wandered into late 19th Century Paris. I half-expected to see Toulouse Lautrec in a corner sipping absinthe. I noticed that the clientele seemed mainly to be local residents - always a good sign - but that business people and tourists were also welcome. The menu was brief and to the point. Dishes were seasonal and locally produced items, including drinks, were highlighted. Over a period of years I’ve visited many times and enjoyed consistently good cooking. This time, I chose the set lunch menu. On the day I visited, the menu sounded rather plain (Soup, Cottage Pie, Mousse) but I saw the opportunity to discover how much flavour this team could extract from modest ingredients. As usual, a plate of beautiful sourdough bread arrived shortly before my bowl of cauliflower and Lanark Blue cheese soup. The soup, made from simple ingredients, was outstanding. The vegetable must have been roasted very slowly, carefully and patiently to extract flavour of such depth. The velvety texture was complemented by a garnish of sweet, crunchy toasted hazelnuts. Comforting and satisfying, my two-hundred-mile round-trip to Edinburgh seemed worth it for this bowl of soup alone. A dish as straightforward and traditional as Cottage Pie needs no fancy embellishment and it wasn't given any. The pie was served in an individual gratin dish with a portion of sautéed green-leaf vegetables alongside. Once again, the modest menu description and simplicity of presentation could lull the diner into anticipating plain food. Every item on the plate was seasoned perfectly and the flavour of the pie's meat base had a gratifying depth. I felt beaten into submission. My homemade Cottage Pie doesn't come close to this! To finish the meal, another simply presented dish arrived: crème fraîche mousse with poached pear and a shortbread biscuit. The silky mousse expertly balanced richness with freshness and the fragrant, sweet pears complemented it very well. I tasted the biscuit and mused that this little piece of confection well represented the blended French and Scottish influences of this restaurant. Had I eaten this dish in France, I might have expected a Sablé biscuit on the side. Here, in Scotland's capital city, I enjoyed this national speciality made from a very short list of good quality ingredients. Accessibility: The dining room is at ground floor level. The toilet/washroom is on a slightly lower level a few steps down from the main cafe area. Prices: The daily set menu is priced at £25 for two courses and £32 for three at lunchtime. (£28.50 / £36.50 for evening service.) The menu which I would call A La Carte offers starters at £14 - £15, main courses ranging from £27 to £35, and desserts at £10 - £15. Wines are priced starting at £7.45 a glass and from around £30 a bottle. In Summary: The "Frenchness" of this cafe is not just about its decor. Classical French Cooking techniques are used in its kitchen. The atmosphere in the dining room is relaxed and the service friendly. Café St Honoré has adopted the French Bistrot mindset of people being there to enjoy the food and wine and not to stand on ceremony.
