Chose to have the caesar salad & paid £3.50 extra to have some slices of chicken. The salad was mainly lettuce and served in a bowl the size of a soup dish. If I hadn't had to pay when I ordered the food I would have refused to pay on leaving. £16.25 for a bowl of salad with 3 strips of chicken. When it was brought to the table I asked about cutlery & the lad said you can get it over by the till where you paid. Great customer service. Won't be going again.

Visited for a function, it’s a very pretty place and has ample parking , pretty easy to find in a semi rural area. Food was good , we had a buffet and the offerings were different to standard , such as cracking and mixed salads . There is a garden that people can spill into which is great as it’s not huge . Drinks I felt were expensive , £10 for a g&t and a small coke, but not outrageous . Staff were friendly and efficient and the place is very clean. I would probably pop bank for coffee and cake if I were in the area but I wouldn’t make a special trip.

Ordered a takeaway. Item didn’t come complete (although rectified after I went back). Drinks took too long and only one lady was working with urgency - others were in the kitchen/galley area talking. Pulled pork ciabatta was very dry - I’ve had it before and it’s been really nice but today, I’d say it was on par or below a supermarket value sandwich.

Asked for 2 slices of beans on toast as I’m diabetic. It firstly came cold, then came warm but with margarine. When we sent it back again and asked to speak to a manager the manager was rude to us told us marg was how it comes despite us asking not for it. We were told they can’t do Beans on 2 toast as they stack it so you get beans on one toast and then she told us we are always a problem. It’s not hard to do beans on 2 toast and do it warm. You need to avoid this place they can’t do simple things right, don’t accept when they are wrong and are incredibly rude. I will spread the word to all about how bad this place is.

Used to be great but came for breakfast today and it wasn’t anywhere near as good as it has been on previous visits. It was cold, sausages were average and surprisingly not gluten free (ok for me but not for another member of my family), tomatoes and mushrooms were watery, and was bacon barely cooked. Even the coffee was cold. The toast was the only good part! Shame.

Unfortunately it seems as though the Bakehouse & pub aren't returning to their previous level of high quality food. This is the second time since lockdown ended, with the first experience also being a let down with the food quality. This time round, the bread for the tuna sandwich was about 2 inches thick with the bare minimum of tuna mix inside. Bread was stale, lettuce was brown at the edges and the coleslaw was catering quality, not the lovely home made one they used to serve before lockdown. The sandwich came out within about 2 minutes also so had definitely been sitting around prepared earlier. The service was good however, but £19 for a coffee, sandwich, piece of cake and water of this quality isn't acceptable. Won't be returning unfortunately and gutted it's gone so downhill.

Recently visited one of your coffee express in Colchester with family and I must say it was an impeccable building. We were greeted with smiles and cheerfulness. The venue was clean which is lovely to see and the decor was lovely aswell. The cakes were lovely especially the lemon cake and the Eton mess. The coffee was also lovely. With so many coffee shops in Colchester you're doing a great job. Specialthanks to your servers as they were very accommodating. I’ve been here 4 times, the first 3 visits I loved it & kept thinking I should take my mum for a treat. I had a jacket potato with my friend & it was lovely, big & nice salad on side with tomato cucumber peppers. I took mum & it was so different. I was confused why this visit was so disappointing. The potato was small, tasted bitter & microwaved & the one with Brie & bacon was a small bit of Brie & 3 rashers of bacon not well cooked, rubbery with lots of fat just stuck on top. The salad was just old bits of lettuce, no cucumbers tomatoes or peppers & a small plate to try and eat it on. Maybe getting too busy?

Went with family today, have been about four times b4 but slowly getting worse I’m afraid. Jacket potatoes were tiny and my bacon and Brie ciabatta had no Brie 🙈 I did mention it to someone but they didn’t seem too bothered and gave me a coffee for free. Personally I thought they should have taken it off the bill but they didn’t, had they of done I wouldn’t have written this review. It’s always busy and it is a lovely venue, it’s just a shame as it could be so much more. Also for some reason they are serving food on tiny little plates so you can barely cut your food without it going all over the table 🤷🏼♀️ Cakes are very good 👍

We went Xmas Eve and thought we had booked an indoor table but apparently not. The food was brought out 5 mins after we ordered which seems super quick to me and could not have been freshly cooked. But it was really nice. Service wasn’t particularly friendly. I would not do this again - why would anyone want to eat outside in December? Maybe we should have checked more throughly which I expect The Bakehouse would say!! There are heaters but not really what we expected and once the food was finished we were cold so went home for more drinks. Oh and they would not accept their own gift card. A very disappointing experience - no allergy guidelines or warning signs! My daughter is allergic to nuts, she ordered a salted caramel tarte and after taking a bite she realised there were nuts in the base. I asked a member of staff if she could confirm whether there were nuts or not and she was very dismissive and disappeared to call the person who orders these cakes. After a long wait she re appeared to say she still couldn't confirm either way! I suggested a replacement and the cake was reluctantly replaced. This is highly irresponsible and dangerous, how can a company run an eatery without strict allergy guidelines and signs in place. Customers are not warned about allergies whatsoever and even more worrying the staff do not know themselves.Thankfully my daughter is not highly allergic and it is not life threatening for her.The sausage roll eventually came which was a 4/10, very thin pastry and sausage meat mediocre. The victoria sponge was dry. Not a good experience.

We have been to the Bakehouse before and although rather pricey you get a good portion and nice views/surroundings. Our visit post lockdown was a shambles. It actually states on the government website that they have participated in the eat out to help out scheme, however on arrival we were told this is not true! They are only doing takeaway, so you have to go and sit outside and wait for your name to be loudly shouted over the whole seating area and go and collect it. A simple ham sandwich in a box was £6.50!! absolutely extortionate pricing! On previous visits the sandwich would come with salad and coleslaw, how can you charge the same price but without those extras!? Also it should be against the rules to have an eating/drinking establishment without opening the loos, we had to quickly consume our sandwich and drive to the nearest Tesco as we were desperate. Shocking and will not be revisiting.

I used to love going to The Bakehouse for it's atmosphere and quality. However, I won't be going again any time soon.I recently ordered a takeaway scone with butter and jam plus tea The service was indifferent. I wasn't asked what sort of scone I wanted and I wasn't given a receipt. (Because it's my usual order I decided not to ask for on. The plain scone was cold, the butter was hard except where it had melted round the edges and was the consistency of margerine. The pot of jam wasn't very full. When I received my card statement I had been charged £8.50 for this delight. I could see on the statement that the usual charge is £6. I rang to query it and told it is correct, a takeaway scone, jam and butter is £5.50 and I must have been "lucky" before. The cost of a scone and butter is £2.90 so I was charged £2.60 for a small plastic pot of jam. The lady I spoke to was unhelpful and insisted the charge was correct, that I must have been "lucky" before, that it should have cost £6.50 and I had been "let off" 50p because it was takeaway. This is extortionate and I will not be returning.

Met 2 friends for brunch. We all ordered hot drinks One friend ordered jacket potato and that come up with the drinks. About 15 minutes later the rest of the order turned up. No apologies. We had both ordered smashed avocado and poached eggs on toast. The egg was hard boiled. We told the waitress and she said she would get us some more eggs. While we were waiting we were left with the avocado and toast getting cold. When she finally came back with eggs they were really runny and snotty looking. The rest of the egg was wet. Very unappetising especially on top of the stone cold avocado and toast. We did mention this and the waitress went off to speak to someone but didn’t come back. We decided to leave it as it spoils the atmosphere having to complain especially as we haven’t all met up for ages. On a positive note the coffee was good. £11 for a coffee and inedible food isn’t acceptable.

First visit here won't be the last. Staff all very polite and all large full English breakfasts were lovely. The veggie selection very good for my husband. Tea and coffee all hot. No complaints. Very busy but plenty of parking.

Following ordering we waited around 30 minutes without drinks so we asked where they were. The waitress came back and said they’d lost the drinks ticket. We asked if they had the food ticket and were reassured they did. Around ten minutes later a different waitress came to our table and said “right, we’ve lost your food ticket, what did you order?”

Food superb every time we’ve been; awesome menu. Staff lovely, cosy, folks nearby not noisy😊 . Facilities excellent, and clean. So, we were really pleased with absolutely everything. Booking for a Christmas get-tog with our friends. Looking forward to returning.

My husband and I visited today and enjoyed a gorgeous afternoon tea! He had treated me to a voucher for this as a birthday gift and despite the fact we didn’t pick up a phone message (so sorry) to provide them with the ‘code’ for this voucher having pre booked, all was set beautifully! The food was absolutely gorgeous and the service impeccable....there was so much to eat that we took some home! We didn’t feel rushed at all and noting felt so much trouble! Thank you and well done!

I met a friend for coffee and a pastry this morning and was really looking forward to it as a friend had said positive things about the food. We arrived at 10am on a Sunday and although the decor and surroundings were cozy and perfect, my expectations were not met. There was only 1 loaf of bread available (not sure how fresh it was as the crust was soft) and my chocolate cake was rather dry (ditto for my friend's cinnamon swirl pastry). My flat white was excellent and the service was good but I left feeling let down and doubtful about going back for afternoon tea with a group of friends. Hopefully this was just a one-off.

We came here for the first time on Saturday 24th August 2019. We came with our daughter and granddaughter who have been many times before. We had prawn sandwiches on granary bread and coffees and I had a beer. The food and service was excellent. With the very filled sandwiches came a small salad, coleslaw and potatoe salad. It was very good and would go again when visiting our daughter, husband and grandchildren. I could not fault it, then again our daughter knows where to eat.

So, our party of 10 elderly ladies arrived in a community transport bus for a pre-booked breakfast/lunch. The lady on reception told us to go through and we sort of carried on not knowing where we were going, From behind she just said keep on going until we were into the pub side of the restaurant-no tables had been prepared. She showed us the various tables of four and I had to ask her to push some tables together so that we could all sit together. Remember this was prebooked! and at 11am so not busy. We then arranged the chairs so that we could all sit together. She then came to the table distributed the menus and told us we would have to come to the counter (two rooms back) to order the food and pay-she would not be taking orders. These are elderly ladies with sticks and walking frames.Really!! Luckily at the age of 70 with knees awaiting replacement, I was there to accompany my aunt of 92. So I used a menu to write on and a pen from my aunt to record the orders of the ladies and their drinks of tea and coffee and made my way back to the counter and ordered food. The menu is not clear. You can order eggs and smoked salmon (eggs royale) or eggs and smoked salmon on a muffin. From that we assumed eggs and smoked salmon would be on toast or ciabata. No. 1 arrived on two slices of muffin-Eggs royale on muffin was eggs on smoked salmon between two slices of muffin. and the hollandaise sauce was really thick and like custard. scraped off. However the waitress who came to bring the various teas and coffees was very kind and understanding and added extra milk as the little urn of milk between two was insufficient. The individual tea pots were lovely, The driver had a full english breakfast which he said was excellent. We then went over to the Plant Nursery quite disappointed to try some retail therapy!!. The food was OK, the reception abysmal. The waitress did what she could to cheer us up. The prices are quite high for a breakfast. Really not good enough. My aunt has been before for the afternoon tea, which is why we came. She said that was lovely (but pricey). Make of that what you will!!

First off, I should have complained at the time but didn't. I have been here a few times and everything was fine and it is a really popular and busy place. We were lucky to get a table outside in the garden overlooking the golden fields of corn? The service was good although no-one asked if we enjoyed our lunch. On this occasion I was unimpressed with the food my daughter and I had, she had the house salad and I had salmon, potato and prawn salad. There are two sizes of salad....the small which was described as ample and the large. We both opted for the small (mine was £7.25) and it was small and not at all ample as far as we were concerned. There weren't many salad leaves and both salads had so much dressing on that it was difficult to taste anything else. The first time I have been out to lunch and gone home hungry. I will go back to this place again as I know they can do so much better than this.....I know......I should have complained at the time.

We have frequently driven past BakeHouse and decided to go for lunch today. We were greeted by a very friendly and polite lady who showed us to a table. We ordered Ploughman’s and Rarebit. Both were unique in their composition. Never have I seen a ploughman’s with a handmade scotch egg and potted salt beef. Both were very reasonably priced for the amount we got. We also ordered pomegranate tea, another unique aspect of this restaurant. We then took a homemade cake home which was cut in half for us. It was very tasty. Would definitely return here, very welcoming and highly recommended.

Awful breakfast had here! It was over £15 for a smaller size breakfast a coffee and juice! I got over cooked eggs a teaspoon of cold beans, no butter with my toast our food came out before the drinks and both our coffees were cold! Staff were rude and obnoxious it’s a beautiful destination apart from the carpark having giant holes all round it but this place is let down by the food and customer service.

I had a really tasty lasagne for lunch which came with garlic bread which was really lovely too. The staff really do make the whole experience even better as well, they’re all so friendly and welcoming. The fox and goose next door is no different. I really would recommend the food here I am looking forward to returning

First visit for me, we arrived with family to find that a table of six was unlikely. We were given a table in the pub and a fire lit for us, we were made very welcome. The food was excellent as was the service and I will definitely be returning, it's the small touches that make all the difference. Rather than being turned away we were found a table and for that we are very grateful.

We were staying in the hotel and this was the night of the Queen's funeral so we decided to 'eat in'. They only had one chef in the kitchen so it took a long time for our meals to appear. They did warn us when we sat down but it would have been nice to be told when we booked the table when we checked in. Food was nothing special but nothing to complain about either.

After shopping in Woodham Ferrers a great place for a break is Costa Coffee, the staff there are very friendly & they can provide you with a good cup of coffee & a nice cake for a very reasonable price.

In area looking at antiques, decided to stop here for light lunch. Dissapointed to find that a Tea Room served our hot drinks in takeout cups and sandwiches on paper plates with plastic knives & forks. The menu sandwich choice read Thick hand cut Wiltshire ham, the sandwich turned up with one slice of thin cut ham. Sausage roll was cooked in microwave so pastry was soggy and a toasted tuna sandwich was not edible. Awful lunch! Addressed our complaint to the staff, was refunded back the Tuna sandwich. Doubtful we will rush back.

Chelmsford the place to eat. Arrived today to see 4 partners chatting behind the counter . I asked one of them I could have x2 pieces of cake from underneath the glass cover, only to be told “it’s self service”. I appreciate that but I am 78 years of age with a health condition and am unable to lift heavy items. I was eventually assisted. There was no breakfast tea on the counter so I was sent to another counter where there was also none to be had. Reluctantly a member of staff found one for me. Not really the best customer experience, unlike the partner in the Christmas department who went over and above to help escorting me to another department to assist me. Come on John Lewis you need to do better.
