The Athenian in Bristol, City of

This place used to be one of the gems of Wapping Wharf and I've been a regular customer for years now, but it has deteriorated to the point I won't bother visiting again. It has gradually become more and more grimy and needs a thorough clean/refresh. During the pandemic the shop became machine-service-only, so you no longer speak to anyone making the food - it's like McDonalds. There's also now a weird counter in front of the kitchen which makes the whole area cramped and messy; presumably it's to service the queue of Deliveroo drivers. Last time I visited they had taken halloumi (the only veggie option) off the menu, replacing it with fake chicken. Presumably this is to cater for vegans, but a Greek restaurant without halloumi is a bad Greek restaurant imo. Pork, chicken or fake chicken are now the only options. The prices have gone up significantly, the loyalty scheme was canned, nothing seems as fresh as it used to, etc etc etc. I just looked at a map and saw that there are now dozens of restaurants in the chain. That explains it. Efficiencies have killed this place. IMO it should move out of Wapping Wharf and become delivery-only, so somewhere better can take its place. Massive shame.

Staff was so nice! They help us explaining sauces and the diferent dishes. Super tasty and lots of Vegan options! I love that! I would come back for sure!

The staff are always on hand to help with allergies and any changes you would like made on your order. The portions were massive and everything was cooked to order and fresh plus super hot. The chicken tasted beautiful and the chips were lovely along with the dips etc.

The machines to order on were easy to use and clean. I had a gyro which was okay but wasn’t as tasty as I was expecting and wasn’t that much filling considering the price. The gyro came out quick and was warm. Wasn’t the best gyro but I’m sure it’s also not the worst in Bristol.

What's happened. Been coming here on and off for a few years now. Food was awful, had the large Gyros. Wrap was dry and contents not very tasty and chips were also dry. Food was Luke warm as well. Also where have the Greek beers gone? Also we wanted to pay in cash but were refused. Cash is still legal tender by the way and we should be given the option of paying this way. Very disappointing. On the plus side staff were very helpful assisting us on the order machine.

This place used to be incredible. Not any more! Dry, reheated food with loads of paprika to try to mask the blandness of the food. Barely anything in the gyros or their box meal. I would never come back to this spot and would definitely recommend you having any other food anywhere else than this awfully prepared meal!

This place used to be amazing but our food this time was not. The chicken was tiny pieces and so dry. The rest was just a wet and sloppy mess and to top it off - it was stone cold.

Such a shame that our food wasn't as good as it used to be! We even used Athenian to cater for our lock down wedding! We emailed recently regarding missing items to an online order but didn't hear anything back! A waste of nearly £50!

When this place first opened it was amazing! Tasted just like the gyro you can get on the streets of Athens. No Le it’s become bigger, the once crispy chicken is kept warm in a pan. And the gyro is absolute slop in a pita. The last two times I have been it’s been like this, I thought I would give them one more chance incase it was a one off. But now, save your money until they improve the food.

The reviews looked good, but our lunch was vile. The chicken was similar in shape and size to wood chips. The meat had no recognisable grain and was a worryingly pallid beige. Definitely not breast or thigh meat. I think it was Mechanically Recovered Meat that had been reconstituted with dollops of pork fat. And very expensive. A never again.

Food is really good and service very fast. It feels like you are in Greece with good food. Place is well situated in Bristol and not too expensive. Would recommend

Not that great, first you have to order it yourself with a horrible self order system, then you relies that many of the things are not in the menu, the quality of meat is very poor, old dry meat, and then to top it all it’s rapped so bad it all falls out when you open it, I would avoid, plenty of other places to eat in the area.

Used to be regulars here but hadn’t been for some time due to trying out some of the newer openings in the area Was initially ignored on entering the store in a Sunday early afternoon, stood there for sometime- as staff talked amongst themselves and continued to not appear to notice me-before feeling uncomfortable so tried to order using the QR code. Was unable to use NHS discount this way so asked male staff member who I had noticed there before so wasn’t new- he shrugged and said he didn’t know how to apply It. He Advised me to wait for the manager and gestured towards a lady who was on the phone. Waited a further 10 mins and the lady was lovely and ordered for me etc. food wait was then 45 minutes I was told. Others came in for refunds while I waited as the online order system told them 5-10 mins not 45. After such a wait had high hopes but found that *the portions are pretty small for the price compared to other businesses in the area ( (one sad olive In the very little Greek salad ) *vegan gyros recipe changed and it’s a total downgrade Add to this the slow disinterested service I probably won’t bother going back sadly

Having previously been here before, I have enjoyed the food they serve here. However, last weekend didn't quite match the standards they set. I appreciate that it was a busy time, but to wait 40 minutes for two boxes was excessive to say the least. To then be charged in excess of £20 for what was a disappointing meal didn't help either. I appreciate that everything has been difficult the last two years, but the service and quality left a lot to be desired. There is such good quality in Wapping Wharf and I hope this was just a momentary blip.

We got a deliveroo delivery from here as we fancied something different and that reminded us of our holidays. Gosh it was good! Simply done souvlaki which was customised (no raw onions for me!) and also came with some free cocktail samples which were really good. It was super tasty and we'll definitely order again. Tip: pop the oven on; we are a bit far away and like our food hot, so we popped everything in the over for 5 mins and it warmed and crisped up nicely.

Disappointed overall, however the courgette fritters were very good. Having experienced some really good Greek restaurants and Gyros when we lived in Germany, this place really isn’t living up to what they advertise.

I ordered via Deliveroo as I was staying for a couple of nights in Bristol. The food was delivered quickly and really well wrapped up. Still absolutely deliciously tasty despite transport. Would love to order direct from the unit in Cargo 2 if I had the time.

Ordered takeaway and paid £2.70 extra for a chicken souvlaki salad and ended up with half the amount of food compared to my friends who ordered standard wraps. I received a small box with a small akount of salad, one tiny piece of chicken but loads of halloumi and no sauce despite ordering one.
