very dark & dull place to go for a drink, however the staff & most of the clientele are welcoming and friendly

Ended up here as was bursting for the loo. No words to describe - Luke some out of deliverance! Could get the antibacterial hand gel on quick enough as we left!

Not in your face loud). .

The bar person made no effort to make us welcome. No smile or anything. Afternoon clientele a bit scary. A drunken man sat next to us even though the pub was almost empty. Read the previous reviews. I wouldn't entertain eating here.

Went on a coach tour and we were booked into the Arctic Bar for dinner at five o'clock. The meals were cold and more or less chucked at you. Had read the reviews before we went but it was worse than i imagined. The place is dull and dingy and smells .The barman was surly and had a could not care less attitude. Never again!!!!!

Dark and dinghy pub. Greeted with bar man asking "what you want" as if we were annoying him. Pint of lager was ok but clientele and state of the pub was up there with the most unwelcoming I've ever came across. I will remember but all for the wrong reasons. Avoid.

Was extremely disappointed in the meal, my friend had steak pie and I had the curry, my friend left more than half of her meal which is unlike her as she always eats everything, she said the meat tasted as if it came out of a tin and my curry was very bland. Would not go back for another meal.

The individual who started this topic can't spell - the name is ARCTIC, and believe me, it's well named - the big wall heater I sat beside for warmth surely hadn't been switched on since Prohibition. Having perused the menu outside, in I went. Miserable looking place although the eaterie was clean. Friendly staff; breaded fish, peas and chunky chips were piping hot and tasty. I do prefer my chips to be a bit browner, but at least they weren't greasy. This came with bread and Flora, a pot of the worst tea I have EVER tasted - or in this case, NOT tasted - and an enormous thick mug which should be used only for coffee or hot chocolate. The Tudor Rose tearoom this ain't! There was light-hearted banter between staff and a few young mums, which helped take my mind off the decor. Will I return? Unlikely - unless I'm dressed for the Real Arctic! .

One of the very few places one can still get a pie and a pint. Home cooked food at very reasonable prices. In my husband's opinion one of the best pints of 80/- in Dundee. Very friendly staff.

Taken here by locals later in the night who apologised in advance - karaoke on offer, occasionally live music, there is a pool table - older pub, personally we loved it!

Well folks... I can't give an honest review regarding the Bar meals in the Arctic Bar because i haven't had a meal there since it was taken over but what i can say is the pub is one of the best places to be. Myself and my friend drink there every weekend. The bar staff are very friendly and the regulars are nice. We only started drinking there about a year ago and were accepted as a regular when we started going in every weekend. We go in for the karaoke which is great fun. Sonia does a good job with it. You have a good old sing along with the regulars who come in just to have a good song and a banter with others. It's a cheery pub and well worth a visit.I certainly enjoy my nights in there and would recommend it to anyone who likes a warm atmosphere with friendly bar staff and friendly customers.... Way to go Arctic Bar.

The only fault that I have with the artic bar is its location, its out of the way, so not so easy to find off by heart, it could do with some interior update, but they do amazing steak pie

food was burnt on outside but frozen inside, tinned vegetables used, you could see the staff bring in farmfoods bag with the frozen food, bar staff a disgrace, "jackie" or whatever her name is, most vulgar, big boobed, ugliest barmaid in history! her chest kept falling out of the low cut top she was wearing, it was the worst bar lunch in history, had half a dozen chips then left, pint glass was dirty as well, when i asked for a clean glass , i got a dirty look from the scrubber behind the bar, honestly save your money , walk round the corner, get a macdonalds or a kfc, plus if you buy a happy meal from macdonalds you will at least come out with a toy and a smile!!

we visited the artic bar and ordered 3 steak pies. when the food came it was unedible. pastry was stone cold beef was warm and dry, veg was tinned peas & carrots. The only thing that was hot was the chips. The waitress kept walking past and she could see our plates were full but completely ignored us until i asked her to come over. She said she would speak to the chef and came back and said he would be out in a couple of mins. In the meantime my friend and i went to the toilets and they were disgusting and my friend was physically sick. In the meantime another 15 mins had passed and no sign of any chef. I then went up to where the food is ordered and said i couldn't wait any longer. While i was waiting i noticed the dust was thick on the wood. The chef eventually came out with an attitude and said he had sold another 4 steakpies that day and no complaints. There was no refund given as you have to pay when you order and he actually tutted at me when i walked away

The Artic Bar has been open for as long as I can remember, hidden up the end of a fairly dingy looking pendy. Inside things look quite run down though the place is tidy enough. The kitchen side more resembles a greasy spoon that it does a pub to be honest. I've eaten here a few times now and I can quite happily recommend the food. Quite standard pub menu, nothing fancy, but it's bloody good stuff. All tastes home made, very reasonably priced and the boy behind the bar is brilliant. Would definitely go back. It's exactly what you're looking for when you for a 'pub lunch'.

Came in on a sunny afternoon for an iced coffee, only to be told they had ran out of ice and they had no cold drink cups to take out? How is this possible!!! Thought I would settle for a regular latte, clearly not their fault, sat down and realised I had made a fatal mistake. It was BOILING in there. How do you let your staff work in this heat???? It’s inhumane! AC vents on the ceiling but no feeling of cold air coming out, and one small fan next to the coffee machine where the barista was standing. The baristas were visibly exhausted and overheated, and not one of them looked happy to be there. Management sort it out!!!!!

So people are asking why this place closed, as it's quite rightly got great reviews for staff service, food, coffee, and general vibe. This was my favourite spot to have a quiet coffee or meet people for a light lunch in Dundee. Basically, the story is that the owner shafted a pregnant employee the day after she went on maternity. He "fired" her and refused to pay her maternity. The staff, having apparently been paid not that great already which is testament to their professionalism given the quality of service, walked out in protest. This was late Spring when the hospitality industry seemingly had ten job vacancies for every candidate, so they rapidly just found other work and Birchwood's workforce simply evaporated overnight. Word got out on Facebook and, especially given the prices, ignited a general boycott of the place through the outrage. I'm unsure if the employee ever did get her *legally required* maternity pay. The last that was being said was that the owner had not only blocked her number, but also HMRC's! A lesson in how a lovely place can come crashing down through the sheer greed of its owner.

Ordered from the light lunch menu mackerel and pine nuts. A small fish on a tiny piece of bread with a lot of lettuce and a few half tomatoes. At over £10 it was very overpriced. Wish I'd stuck to my usual fishcakes.
