Jute Cafe Bar in Dundee City

Ordered from the light lunch menu mackerel and pine nuts. A small fish on a tiny piece of bread with a lot of lettuce and a few half tomatoes. At over £10 it was very overpriced. Wish I'd stuck to my usual fishcakes.

terrible service, we booked tables for a big team. were moved twice, the waiters were extremely rude and were not satisfied with the fact that most people got drinks only.

Arrived on Saturday night with no reservation . We were swiftly queened in , received prompt, friendly and excellent service , food was delicious . A great start to the evening

Chicken Kiev was overcooked and not crispy…. At the same time! Potatoes also undercooked…..expresso was cold and bitter

We love the DCA /Jute Cafe and have been going for well over a decade. The bar is always excellent, however, we found the the food / restaurant on our last 2 visits (one for a business dinner with a group of 10, and the other a family weekend lunch) to be sub-par. Burgers were bland, not cooked as requested, and dense, Onion rings were pale and undercooked (almost crunchy in places), the BBQ pulled pork was overly sweet and wet / mushy, and the children’s fish goujons were swimming in oil. Staff were friendly enough but not very attentive. Overall a far cry in comparison to the quality of food and service the DCA / Jute Cafe have produced in the past and we won’t be going back unless things have dramatically improved.

Gorgeous meal last night, my 13 year old son was dubious at first but the brisket rissoles and best onion rings ever definately impressed him, and that's not easy. He also had a few bits of my haddock and the tastiest fries I've ever had. Best meal for a long time. Great service too.

It’s nice space but the food is awful and overpriced. Sandwiches on economy bread, no finesse….basically cheap ingredients but expensive prices. Staff seem to be chosen for ability to wear tight jeans and display body art, but deliberately don’t catch your eye,hence takes an age to get served. cocktails are ok, but they should be, given how much they cost. I wish they’d improve because I worry about the venue’s future ….a better menu and train your staff better!

Pleasantly busy, service good, great choice on menu while not being overwhelming. Food was hot and fresh and good portion sizes. Very tasty

My husband and I went for lunch, he had fish tacos, I ordered a grilled haloumi wrap which when came was 99% rice and tasted very bland. After failing to get the attention of our waiter I took it to the counter and explained that they had missed out the haloumi. They said that it would be redone and sure enough it came out exactly the same apart from the addition of one breaded haloumi stick per burrito half. My husband asked for his rustic chips to be subbed with sweet potato fries for £1.50 supplement but got both and we were charged £4.50. I didn't complain about this as he ate both while waiting for me to get my 2nd plate. When I went to pay I complained that the grilled haloumi was not what I expected, they took my meal off the bill, but I still paid £25 for one meal, a tea, coffee and the extra fries. Very disappointed and we won't be back.

Went for a birthday meal. I’ve never been disappointed by a meal at Jute. The food is a little different to what most places in Dundee offer, but nothing spectacularly wild. Had cod cheek starter, which was surprisingly tender and well balanced with the sauce. Hake + risotto main was nice too, fish cooked well (maybe slightly underseasoned, but was a big piece). Risotto was perfectly enjoyable, may not fit perfectly with the kind of dense fish hake can be, but still a good plate of food. Decided against dessert only because the smallish selection was not really what I like in a dessert, plus there was birthday cake at home anyway. Overall very enjoyable, food was cooked well and nice variety of choices for the most part.

Rediculously small portions re main course for a Christmas Eve celebration meal. Miserly small portions were served to us for dinner. From the mains on the normal menu, not the Christmas menu, we both selected braised ox cheek beef featherblade of beef with mash, bacon (which was literally non detectable on the dish), carrot and onion jus at £16:95 each. We were both very disappointed when it arrived at the table, it was a small lump in the middle of the plate with a few carrots around it. It should be on their lights meals section of the menu. It was like a decent sized starter. I have had a tapas dish with similar ingredients at another restaurant nearby which was easily the same size as this main course. It was a total rip off. I do also go to more expensive restaurants which can charge a lot but as long as you get a normal sized portion you don’t mind. When there is a starter menu, a lights menu and a mains menu to choose from, then you expect the main course selection to be a normal main sized portion. It was far from a normal portion, it was very small. I wish I had taken photos. After taking a bout 5 minutes to eat the dish we finished our bottles of Prosecco and realised no one was coming to ask how it was or if we wanted to order a desert. We then got our bill at the desk, as did not want to order anything further in case it was equally disappointing; not that a waiter or waitress came near us anyway as clearly there was a severe lack of staff. We will not be back to the noisy, disappointing and inattentive Jute Cafe - we left hungry and dissatisfied 😡

Mushroom tartlet does not exist! Different dish entirely. Beef feather blade consisted of small bits of fatty beef, hardly any veg. Staff worked hard to delivery overpriced and in my view poor quality food. Very disappointing works Xmas meal. When catering for a large party don’t eek out food.

Great atmosphere and venue. Service excellent. Food could be improved. Mushroom tartlet not as expected. Three volaveunts with about 2-3 slices of mushroom. The mushroom was delicious but not enough. A tartlet would suggest a small pastry tart with mushrooms. Light bite option 2 Thai fishcakes. Poor. More like a tasteless potato with a tiny amount of fish mashed in. Smoked haddock bon bons not much better. The brushetta with mashed avocado and prawns soggy. The concept was good but poorly executed.

I have never had any complaint about The Jute bar at DCA, until last night. The service was, as usual excellent and the atmosphere is lively…..but my burger was dry and tasteless, the chips were crunchy and mostly inedible as so hard. The plate was so small half my food ended up on the table. I really didn’t enjoy it. The menu, always exciting has turned dull and predictable. A 250ml of red wine nearly £10? I didn’t complain as I wasn’t paying, but am reticent about a return visit anytime soon. A real disappointment.

Tiny portions now (they have gradually become worse but are now ridiculously small), expensive, items missing from dish, had to go for another meal afterwards and we’re not greedy. Restaurant was cold. Had to pay £20 upfront to book the table. £40 for two meals and one desert, no drinks.

Some serious staff training needed in hospitality. Service was incredibly slow and nonchalant throughout, ordered 4 adults mains and 1 kids meal on the app advertised to order through when seated outside, receive a conformation email that the order has been accepted. Time passes, 35 minutes in total before we go to the bar to ask about where the meals are to be told the app isn't working today. Why didn't they tell us when they gave us the menus or delivered drinks outside? So they manually take our order after a couple of 'sorry about that' etc etc. Kids meal we asked to come out ASAP as it was pitta and houmous which was relatively quick to be fair. 25 minutes after the order was manually taken head back in to ask where the mains are to 2 staff at the restaurant desk not doing anything 'the app isn't working' to which I noted we know and ordered manually after a 35 minute wait. They call the kitchen to work out where the food is, 5 minutes after this we receive the food which was OK but we were waiting on an additional side. At no point where apologies sincere, or were we offered anything for the inconvenience, just the impression it didn't really matter. Dine elsewhere if you are eating in the West End. So many hospitality basics just missed.

This was a spectacularly good meal. The menu is really good here and the food presented perfectly. The tempura pork belly and blade of beef were outstanding. Staff very friendly and ambience was brilliant. Hugely recommended

Came into the Jute yesterday with friends for a couple of drinks before dinner. The place was very busy but had a nice atmosphere. There's a good selection of beers on tap and wines too, but beware of the large glasses of wine, they're massive! Moved across to the restaurant for dinner and the service was top notch. Attentive and professional without being intrusive. We had two steak burgers with sides of chilli chips and onion rings. Very nicely cooked and served quickly. Desserts were eton mess and cheescake and both were very nice too. Would definitely recommend this place as a venue for both drinks and food. Nice mix of people in here too!

Our family of 6 adults and 3 children aged between 6 and 8 enjoyed lunch here one Sunday afternoon in June. The online booking was seamless and a confirmation reminder via SMS the day before was helpful. We had an adult wheelchair user in our group which I included in the online booking notes but I emailed the restaurant just to check they were okay with this and I got a speedy response to say it was no problem at all. Lift access direct to the restaurant from the car park was great, particularly for the wheelchair user. Entry from the main DCA entrance was straightforward. Restaurant is spacious and airy so felt open and welcoming. Drinks order was taken promptly and then food order followed. A fantastic menu with lots of options and a great children's menu too. It was a busy lunch service with large groups (and it was Fathers Day too) so a bit of a wait but understandable when busy. Food didn't disappoint when it arrived - everyone enjoyed their meals and clean plates all round. Very good value for money too. Service was attentive throughout and nothing was too much trouble - even when our children went back to ask for more pens and pencils for their colouring in sheets. Overall, a very pleasant visit. Tasty food and value for money. Enjoy!

I was grabbing some food before the cinema and ordered the 'sesame fried cauliflower' dish. The food tasted good, but I was disappointed that, though Cauliflower was the main ingredient, there were only four small florets on the plate. At £12.50, this was definitely not my idea of value for money, and it seemed like foolish skimping on a low-cost ingredient. When the waitress asked how it was, I told her, and she said she would, "pass it on."

We arrived early for our lunch booking so we opted for brunch instead. There’s a shortish brunch menu of the usual options. I chose scrambled egg on brioche with hot smoked salmon. The bun was doughy and tasteless and really not much more than a white bread bun. It was one of those commercial buns that are made in two halves. The scrambled egg was firm and not soft and creamy. I think it had been microwaved. The salmon was tasty and a decent amount. Coffee was good. Service was ok. Prices reasonable.

Shocking customer service! Booked a table for 10 for graduation day in June. A few weeks later we received a “graduation menu” which was a set 2 or 3 course menu with one fixed vegetarian option for starter and main. I emailed asking if we could still order from the usual menu which is what we had based our booking choice on due to no choice for vegetarians. Slow response from the manager but we were told that any table with 4 or more guests had to order from graduation menu only. I emailed back asking why this was. Slow response again from manager saying that it was to provide a better speedier service on graduation day, I replied stating that i felt it was unfair that I had booked based on usual menu with no mention of a graduation menu so wanted to cancel if we would not be able to order form usual menu due to lack of choice. I asked for confirmation of cancellation as credit card details had been left. I received an instant reply this time o my with notice of cancellation!!! No reason why we couldn’t have pre booked our meal if it was only about offering a more efficient service!

Service very slow. Sat down at 5.30, order taken at 6, food delivered 50 minutes later. Place was jam packed, but as soon as a table became available it was filled with new diners. Pity ways enjoyed dining here but I'll not be in a hurry to return.

I can't understand why this place has never managed to sort its game out. The food is (nearly) always great. Prices are very reasonable. Service is (nearly) always abysmal! Ordered drinks. They were delivered to the wrong table (nearby), who sent them back. Eventually they got to us. Ordered food. Not too long a wait - good. I had the mezze platter, which was delicious. I think it was around £12.965, a reasonable price. Friend had fish and chips which she enjoyed. I also order a Side of peri peri fries which never arrived. I wasn't that bothered, the mezze was plenty. Then we came to pay, only to find the fries were on our bill! They were take off when we mentioned that we hadn't actually received them, and no-one actually argued with us. It's just that the service doesn't quite match the standard of the food -and it's always been like this here. You'd think by now they would have sorted it out. The poor service just always spoils what would be an otherwise great casual dining experience.

Midweek meal with friends at Jute Cafe in The DCA building. The bar and restaurant are busy compared to an empty Art Centre. This was the case on my last visit too. Don't know if they are separate companies or both Dundee City Council . The staff were friendly and attended to our table in a professional manner. We ordered Peronis and a selection of foods . Food was served within 15 mins of ordering and we were all satisfied with our choices. Would happily return on my next visit to Dundee.

Seated as soon as we arrived and given menus. Lots of staff passed by however we must’ve been invisible as it took around 20 minutes for anyone to take our order. We hadn’t even been asked if we wanted anything to drink. Once the order was taken the food arrived surprisingly quickly however we still had not received our drinks. The food was poor and not of a very high quality.

Firstly have been here many times for drinks 🍸 and cocktails are first class. So we decided to try the food, and I wasn't impressed. I may have been expecting to much as the menu sounds so promising. Starter of Thai fishcakes, had no Thai flavour and contained mostly potato, could have be Aldi fishcakes, think they thought adding a wee pot of chilli sauce was Thai enough. Burger for main sort of hard, was not meaty and tender, and again lacking any flavour. Eating the actual menu might have been tastier 😆

Excellent lunch menu, full of variety and healthy options to suit all palates and dietary requirements - snacks, sandwiches and full meals. We had, between three, a vegetable curry, salt and pepper squid with a salad of mango and avocado, halloumi skewers with aioli and a side of piri piri fries, all delicious.
