Fantastic early Christmas dinner with Milady. Catered by the 2nd year students, 6 remarkable dishes and an attentive and friendly front of house. Will return for a lunch sitting in the New Year. https://g.co/kgs/uSYPPe

We had such a great experience here. The food is cooked and served by students from Granton college. Food was really brilliant, only £15 for three courses, and tableside banana flambé was so fun. Had a great time, great value (including very good value drinks (£4 passion fruit martini)), and would highly recommend!

Our visit was the 4th ever service for this college cohort, so taking that into account, the meal was very good. We have to report that the flavour was super, with every course. Which, is the whole point, to taste great flavours. The students rotate the chef role / service role. Their inexperience was a bit more apparent here, but nothing major. Just small attention to details, like different size wine glasses, an extra fork on my seat(?), food arriving before the drinks. The food needed a couple of tweaks too, temperatures were a bit hit and miss, tasty and hot are generally the two core requirements that should be met when dining. Overall they are a talented bunch and would recommend anyone to go and sample their food. I have two more reservations already, next time for the third year student fine dining experience. So I would be hoping that temperatures and consistency issues to be ironed out.

Had lunch today at the apprentice restaurant. It was our first visit after seeing a banner outside the college and we were not sure what to expect. The food was amazing and exceeded our expectations. The Beef Bourguignon was cooked to perfection, so tender and full of flavor. Dessert was amazing also. It may be a training restaurant, but the food is prepared to a professional standard.

My wife and I had lunch in this training restaurant at Edinburgh College. The young staff serving were very well presented, polite and helpful. The food was of a very high standard - easily comparable to that of a high end restaurant. And at £12 for 3 courses you will be pushed to find anything better value. We will certainly be returning and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

This is a great place to eat if you have a limited budget, a good meal for £5 or £10 depending on whether lunch time or evening. This is where students practice their skills in hospitality. We had a great 3 courses for lunch with coffee and shortbread and a long drink for £15 all in for two. You need to book a table though. The service is fine, students are supervised. We also went for dinner and this was 4 courses with coffee or tea and chocolate. All for £16.50, a bargain too and lovely food, interesting recipes and you get to speak to the chefs as they want feedback. We went for Christmas dinner and enjoyed mulled wine, fruit and chocolate breads, duck and smoked salmon starters and striploin beef and cod dishes followed by an assortment of desserts and coffe and Christmas pies. Great value and service.

We had such a lovely time here. The service was excellent and the meal was amazing and we were all total stuffed after it. We found it very relaxing and the attention to detail was brilliant. You can see the students are putting a lot of hard work into this and they deserve all the credit for it. I have been to a lot of restaurants which have been more expensive but this experience was a lot better compared to a lot of restaurants up town. It is amazing value for what you pay but I would have paid more also for the experience. I thought it was great when all the students were asking how they had done and they received 110% feedback from us and we will be coming back and ill spread the work. Keep up the great work.

All four of us thought the meal was very good, and the waiters/waitresses were skilled and attentive. The price included five small courses plus tea and coffee, with several choices for three of the courses. The room was pleasant and didn't feel like a college. We were pleased to be able to help the students and staff by making one or two suggestions at the end. My only criticism is that the savoury courses were a bit small. With so many courses we turned down the bread and butter offered early on, so we would have room, but after eating the small main I was still quite hungry and could have done with the bread and butter or a cheese and biscuits dessert option, or a soup starter would have been more filling if available. Probably my fault for turning down the bread. Otherwise a lovely evening and different more classy food than at the places we normally go to.

Having been here previously in March we rebooked and went for dinner here tonight. This time it was a completely different menu but no drop in standard - everything was delicious! Top quality fine dining and beautiful wine selection but a fraction of what you would pay in town. The desserts also had an Alice in wonderland theme that was designed by Rachel - massive well done as presentation and taste were brilliant. Big shout out to Ewen who served us, we were so impressed with your professionalism and we even told you we would hire you in a heartbeat! We will be back again and believe us when we say we recommend this place to every person we speak to about eating out in Edinburgh! Thanks again

Formerly Zero One, this superb restaurant is the training suite where students of The Edinburgh College, alma mater to TV chef Tony Singh, indulge their guests with an outstanding £14.95 four-course dinner as they perfect their skills in the kitchen and at table every Thursday evening during term time. There was a very good choice for each course and every dish showed a very accomplished talent in producing stunningly good, imaginative food that was beautifully presented and within budget. I particularly admired the versatility of using the same ingredients in different ways in different dishes. Well done! Highly recommended on every level and a nicely ambient atmosphere that doesn’t overwhelm the diners. There is a limited but safe wine list and drinks are equally easy on the pocket.

Not an easy place to find, but once there we were immediately struck by how friendly and service oriented the "staff" were. Both students and professionals, teachers, were informative, enthusiastic, and enthusiastic in making the dining a good experience. More so than many of the new fancy restaurants around town. Oh, and also without blaring mind numbing music, a welcome atmosphere and no need to ask for a quiet area. Limited but decent wines, and very fair priced drinks. The food , though in almost miniature portions is prepared very well, the meats cooked perfectly, the soup sublime , though served in an espresso cup. Each of the 5 (one added as a special) courses were prepared and presented perfectly, and had explanations and details given by the server. both chefs, teachers and seasoned pros came out to the table to say hello and answer any questions. we will be back to this unpretentious and ambiance friendly dining experience again for sure. All the best to these students who will without doubt be well prepared for food service futures. Well done University.

"extremadamente buena". .

After reading the reviews on Trip Advisor I was excited about a lunch we had planned at the Apprentice. I feel almost bad writing this, because I do understand they are students, but even in a learning environment it was pretty awful. If you have a haircut by a student, or a student doctor tends to you, a qualified person is always on hand. I seriously doubt there was a qualified chef in that kitchen, nor was an experienced front of house manager anywhere to be seen. I will start with the food: to start I had a chicken and egg noodle stir fry in an oyster sauce. If I am honest I thought a stir fry was a bit of a strange starter, but when it came it was surprisingly pleasant. The chicken was cooked well, the sauce was good. I just thought the noodles were a bit bland, was as if they had been taken out of a bag of fresh egg noodles and popped on the plate, could have maybe been stir fried with the chicken and sauce. For my main I chose steak in red wine sauce. The steak was okay, a bit overcooked (we weren't asked how we wanted it cooked) but it was definitely well done. The mashed potato was the let down though. So unbelievably lumpy with chunks of raw potato through it and a lack of seasoning. Not even a little bit of lump, it was as if it had seen a masher once and never again, it was embarassingly bad. I took to mashing mine on my plate with a fork! The broccoli was also a little too al dente. For the desssert I had profiteroles. They were small and very hard and crunchy, had been overcooked. What was most bizarre was that they came bathed in a mango puree, very strange. Now on to the service. Again, I understand they are students but you won't get far in the hospitality industry by being cheeky to customers. Perhaps the waiter thought he was having banter, but it didnt come across that way. He was very shaky when brining the drnks and food over, which is fine, he is a student, I understand. Also rather than asking individually (we were a table of 8) if we wanted things, they were just coming up and standing at the end of our table and hollering "who's having the stir fry?" and "does anyone want coffee?" and the like. Ordering the dessert was a farce. One of my party asked what came with the apple tart, and was told pouring cream, and he asked if it would be possible to have ice cream instead. So the waiter went away then came back with a flat out no. When we asked why he went away and came back again and said "because the ice cream is for the crepe suzette, there isnt enough." So the gentleman in my party said he would have the profiteroles instead, and the waiter replied "if you want ice cream, you know where Farmfoods is" and literally all our jaws dropped. Luckily my friend is very laid back, and he replied "well you can go get us some them" in jest, and the waiter replied "nah, no really" and off he went. When the desserts came, a random dessert that no one had ordered showed up, and we advised it wasnt ours. Rather than take it back to the kitchen, the woman just stood beside our table with it, staring over us blankly for a good minute or 2.Finally, 15 minutes after our desserts were gone, we gave up waiting to ask for the bill and approached the desk ourselves (there were only 4 other people in there!) by this point we had been there for an hour and 40 minutes. I understand it is never going to be the speediest service but it was extremely slow. All in all, more hands on supervision in the kitchen (even the chef at my local pub wouldnt serve mash/steak/profiteroles like that) and a front of house manager overseeing everything is needed to make an improvement.A poor experience, not worth the £11 it cost me, I won't be back."nah no really"

Went for the special vegan menu with a group of fellow vegans because I'd heard it was fantastic - and I wasn't disappointed. The service was friendly and professional (though you could tell some of them were pretty nervous - entirely unnecessarily!), and the food was amazing and great value. You would never know the chefs are students - such creative, tasty and beautifully presented food! It can be hard to get decent vegan food in non-vegan restaurants and you get pretty used to being palmed off with a stir fry or a tomato pasta, but every dish was thoughtful, unusual and downright delicious. Thanks guys, you should be proud of yourselves. Will definitely be back!

I have visited this restaurant twice now, as I know someone who studies in the department. Overall, I was very impressed for it being students in training, full credit to them. The first time we visited I was blown away, we had the beef olives and fish goujons and they were both cooked to perfection. It was hands down one of the best meals I have had! The dessert, a strawberry tart, was a bit of a let down as the pastry was absolutely solid but it was still very tasty nonetheless, and the service was fabulous. However, the second time we visited it could not have been more of a let down. I had the red mullet for starters which was lovely, really set me up well for my meal, but my friend (the same one I had visited with previously) opted for the thai chicken soup which he repeatedly stated was far too watery and tasteless, and he decided to not even attempt finishing it. We both had the chicken kiev for mains which was amazing. For dessert, I had the apple turnover which was lovely albeit a bit burned on the top whilst my friend went for the jam roly poly, which he again was disappointed by and stated that it tasted nothing like it should and the consistency wasn't what it should have been. I have also noticed on both occasions that as the staff know my friend, I have been pretty much ignored. The first visit our waiter was Dean and he was five star, can't praise him enough! Overall, the food is very very good, (maybe the second visit was just a bad day) and the service from what I can see my friend receiving, is great. However, I can't praise the value for money enough, it is absolutely brilliant and the quality of everything is amazing as these are at the end of the day, students who are training in the trade. Keep going guys well done!

Having had quite a good experience at EH15 we thought we'd try the Granton Apprentice. It would be easy to be overly critical, but we have to remember that this is a student 'production' and we are not paying very much at all. I found the restaurant rather gloomy and rather cool; had to keep my fleece jumper on. Service was good, if lacking a little positivity and control. I would encourage the staff to be a tad more assertive whilst maintaining the good service level. The soup (Thai chicken) was a little weak but still tasty. The lamb cutlets were not large but then again they never are, anywhere. The servings of vegetables arrived some two minutes after the cutlets were served; hence, with the cool room temperature, the meal was not hot. My dessert of a fruit turnover was good, but my friends' cheescakes had a very dense base which had to be tackled with a knife and fork.On the basis of my experience I will be reluctant to return to this venue, but I compliment the efforts of the students and hope that their skills grow as they practice their chosen trade.

This restaurant is part of the Cookery school of Napier University. The food is cooked by the students and served by them too as part of their training and course. The choice was good, presentation was excellent, the meals were brilliant. We were a group of 8 so we had something from everywhere on the menu and no one was unhappy with their choice. It's hard to think of anywhere where you will get such a good meal for such a reasonable cost. Reserve your table and go early. Each student cooks a finite number of one dish. When its finished there is no more and you will have to choose another. Those coming at the end of the two hour lunch will have a much reduced choice.

Just back from a special vegan dinner at the college, and cannot get over the standard of this amazing restaurant. Not only was each dish absolutely gorgeous to look at - I don't think I've ever experienced a higher standard of presentation - every morsel was totally delicious. Subtle and exquisite flavours, which all contrasted beautifully. The trio of desserts was outstanding and the hand made truffles were a lovely finishing touch. The team were welcoming, professional, friendly and a pleasure to be around - what a credit to the college. One small criticism - no vegan wine was available, which needs to be rectified. Particularly as our group has more than 400 vegan members in Edinburgh and I'll be spreading the word about this place! But that aside, I really would give this superb eatery 10 out of 10 and I'll definitely be back - with friends and family. Top rate.
