Tripadviser rejected my first review, fair enough, I wrote it on the night I visited this pub and they have clearly complained about the review, but emotions run high when the quality of what you have been served is so appalling. When beer tastes like vinegar and you have to leave it, and simply leave the premises because to have complained would have attracted so much attention from the locals, says a lot about the atmosphere. What a trully dreadful experience this was. I have never been served such an awful pint of Wainwright, honestly it was so bad. Speaking to other landlords in Wooler, this isnt an issolated comment.. Perhaps if you are touring, or there shooting as I was, The Anchor, is more suited if you aren't a local, local....(if you get my drift)

Alright for drinks, food not good. £6 for ‘loaded’ fries!? A handful of chips with a spoonful of chilli on top is not loaded fries. Hotdogs felt like plastic.

Have just polished off a beautiful (massive) portion of fish and chips using the Angel inn take away service and it was as good as you could wish for. Large piece of succulent cod in crisp light batter, real fresh chips and tasty mushy peas - it's a good job my wife helped me out as a single portion filled two dinner plates. Hats off to the staff and the hotel for providing such excellent service!

Went in The Angel for Sunday lunch as it is a dog friendly pub and at 2pm it was getting late to find anywhere. When seated in the 'dining room' we thought we'd maybe made a mistake as it is, shall I say, functional, with canteen style chairs and tables, together with tv screens showing Sky. However we stuck it out and our reward was a tasty Sunday roast. I had Beef, wife Lamb, both meats were cooked well being moist, succulent and very tender and plenty of it on each plate. Veggies were served separately and again plentiful and nicely cooked. At £9.95 each this was worth it. If you want good food, cheap and don't mind the surroundings then this is good but not if you want somewhere with more pleasant ambience.

Being unable to get a table in our hotel we went along the high street to this pub to get something to eat and were quite surprised at the size of the portions served, just about fitted on the plate, and the cost. OK just fish and chips but what a size piece of cod! This with chips and enough green peas to feed 2 people, washed down with a lovely pint of Theakstons best bitter made an enjoyable change. (If required there is also a small children's menu) plus given the choice of tab or pay now.

We have been there as we were sleeping in Wooler before going to Lindisfarne. It's one of the pubs open to have dinner or enjoying a beer or a drink. We ordered a steak and lamb, they come back to say the lamb was finished so 2 steaks. No pear cider at all, my favourite, not very rare for a pub. The service was so so, not a service I will remember but not too bad as well. The food was fine, tasty, delicious. Many tables, not busy for an august Saturday eve. In the village centre, noce pub inside Could be better. To try

Terrible service. Ordered 3 portions of breaded mushrooms which came in one bowl, no side plates or salad.Main meals an absolute disgrace.Steak pie came without pastry with no veg or explanation when we asked were told they'd ran out - matter of fact no apology.Roast chicken came with chips - advertised with veg, gravy and stuffing. Again had to ask for these and took 10 minutes to arrive, dry and tastless.Steaks with peppercorn sauce again no veg given. Steaks themselves were dry as hell and were by no means medium/rare. Peppercorn sauce was a paste and contained a complimentary powder. Would not recommend to anyone.

The service was absolutely disgraceful. Ordered a half chicken roast which came without the sides and was not told that there was no stuffing until complaining. It then took 10 minutes for the gravy and sausage to finally arrive for the chicken meal. Scampi and chips were ordered with veg that turned out to be cold soggy carrots that were clearly from a tin. 20 minute wait for two very small portions of “large” chips. Burgers were also ordered and were asked if we wanted onion rings of which we said yes and none were given. A steak and onion baguette came without onions but given with just whole mushrooms as well as the baguette being toasted on the cut faces but raw everywhere else. This would be a given if the pub was actually busy or if we were warned about any of the alterations to our meals but none was given. Just an all round disappointment.

If you are looking for a basic pub meal in very friendly and 'local' surroundings the Angel will suit very well. It is on the main road in the town with plenty of on-street parking available. The interior is basic but spacious. Menu is what might be described as typical pub food and includes sandwiches, a variety of mains and a special Sunday lunch menu. There is not a great deal of vegetarian choice (lasagne and vegetable curry) but the food is good. We recently had the curry and were very pleased with it - a large portion with rice and chips could have been with it too if we wished. It was extremely good value at £7.50. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We would be happy return anytime for a casual meal at very fair prices.

17 respectable U3A members visited this pub after walking in the area. Two weeks before the pub was told we would be coming. Two days before we rang with the exact numbers. The majority of the party were just having sandwiches or jacket potatoes. Service was extremely slow but when we did have our food, after an hour, it was served by a very pleasant young girl who rushed backwards and forwards. But finally one of the members gave up on his prawn sandwich and left asking for his money back. Soon after that, the owner? came out and in an extremely unpleasant manner accused us of having had the prawn sandwich as 'she had made this straight away.' Food was reasonably priced and good portions, quality for simple pub fare O.K. first bowl of chips underdone though. But because of the extreme rudeness of the woman she has lost repeat visits of 17 people plus probably others we tell. Many other pubs in Wooler to go to instead.
